PREPS 2021
Bound for adventure Whether it is your first child or your fifth, starting school is always a big deal and is definitely a milestone worth celebrating. It is a memory you as parents, your child’s family, and your child themselves will look back on over the years, making it that much more important to capture the moment at the time. That’s why at The News this feature is so important to us because it is helping give you something you can cherish forever. Together three advertisers, two photographers, one journalist and a graphic designer endeavoured to capture preps all over the Goulburn
Valley — from Nathalia to Murchison, Merrigum to Dookie — visiting more than 45 schools in the past few weeks. Whether there were four classes of 20 or simply one, every photo is worth capturing and our team worked hard, working with school staff, to put a name to each little face. That’s not all we’ve done. If this is the first time sending your child off to “big-kid” school or you are a seasoned professional, The News has your back, providing a few tips and tricks on keeping your kids safe under the sun. So, we hope you enjoy this feature today and for the years to come.

PREPS 2021
How to keep your child SunSmart Good sun protection routines are important to establish with your children from an early age. To make sure your kids have a SunSmart start to their education, after slipping on clothing that covers the skin, follow the slap, slide, slop steps. Slap a broad-brimmed hat on your child, slide on a pair of sunglasses to reduce UV rays, slop on SPF30 (or higher) sunscreen, and encourage your children to seek shade for outdoor play. When applying sunscreen, you can make it a fun and easy part of your child’s day by following these tips: • Make it simple: choose an SPF30 or higher broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen that your child feels comfortable wearing. • Make it fun: Applying sunscreen
doesn’t have to be boring. Encourage your child to put a dot of sunscreen on each cheek, nose and chin and add squiggles of sunscreen to parts of arms and legs not covered by clothes. • Practise early: Let kids apply sunscreen themselves from about three, so they’re ready come kindergarten or primary school. • Make it easy to find: Set up a sunscreen station in front of the mirror in the home. • Make it easy to reapply: 2020 Prep bags will have six colourful SunSmart stickers to remind students to ‘slip, slop, slap, seek and slide’ before they play outdoors. Stick them around the house to start the conversation with your child about sun protection, or try a clip-on sunscreen that can
hang from your child’s bag as a visual reminder. • On hot days, put sunscreen in the cooler section of your child’s lunchbox, so it’s cold and refreshing to apply. With Victoria’s high UV rays, sun
protection is usually needed from midAugust until the end of April. For more information, Visit the SunSmart website or download the free SunSmart app to check when protection is needed each day.
