IT FEELS AS THOUGH WINTER HAS JUST FLOWN BY, AND BEFORE WE KNOW IT, CHRISTMAS WILL BE JUST AROUND THE CORNER. BUT BEFORE THE CHAOS and excitement that comes with that time of year, it’s time to celebrate spring — opening our homes up, welcoming in the sunshine and letting that fresh air flow through once again. This edition of Our Home is filled with all the lightness, colour and inspiration that spring brings. I’ve been lucky enough to step inside two beautiful homes over the past couple of months, both showcasing what truly makes a home your own. From a retro-inspired 1970s styled blast from the past in Tatura, to a collector’s paradise in Shepparton, both homes are filled with individuality, creativity and flair. Natural light floods through each space, while treasured items throughout tell stories of memories, passion and personality. If you’re looking for creative inspiration, you’ll

want to take a closer look at these two wonderfully styled properties. As always, this edition is packed with recipes, ideas and inspiration for both inside and outside the home. Our featured artist, Angie Russi, also welcomed me into her stunning studio in Rushworth, giving me a glimpse into her creative world. I also caught up with Shepparton News senior journalist Bree Harding about her travel podcast, which shares the incredible stories and experiences of people from across our region. Pocket money: What’s a good rate? AGE-APPROPRIATE CHORES AND POCKET MONEY IDEAS FOR EVERY STAGE OF CHILDHOOD. GROWING UP, A COUPLE of gold coins was about the total amount I earned for what felt like a million jobs around the house each week. In reality, it was probably only four, but when you’re a kid, even a handful of chores can feel like a fulltime job. Pocket money was definitely a part of my childhood, and it’s something I’ve recently been trying to introduce at home with my son. But it got me thinking … how much should kids actually be getting paid these days? And what kinds of jobs are reasonable to expect them to do? I have a feeling my son would probably throw a $2 coin back at me if that’s all I offered him. So, with that in mind, I’ve taken a look at some pocket money guides, age-appropriate chore lists and different ways families are encouraging children to help around the house. The aim isn’t just to keep kids busy — it’s to teach responsibility, build a strong work ethic and help them understand that rewards are often earned through effort.

AGES 3–5 (LITTLE HELPERS) Focus: Learning routines, tidying, helping alongside adults Chores: • Put toys back in the toy box • Place clothes in the laundry basket • Wipe up small spills • Help set the table (non-breakable items) • Match socks after washing • Water plants (with supervision) Pocket money idea: $1 to $3 per week (optional at this age — often more about praise and small rewards than regular payment).

AGES 6–8 (EARLY RESPONSIBILITY) Focus: Basic independence and simple household tasks Chores: • Make their bed • Pack school bag • Feed pets • Set and clear the table • Dust low surfaces • Help hang washing • Empty small bins (with supervision) Pocket money idea: $3 to $7 per week.

After all, learning the value of money and contributing to the household are life lessons that can last well beyond childhood. And in reality, no pocket money system survives the first week of a child discovering they can simply “forget” what day it is. These are simply guidelines — every family is different, so it’s about finding what works best for you and your child when it comes to chores and pocket money. Good luck. AGES 9–11 (BUILDING HABITS) Focus: Consistency and responsibility Chores: • Vacuum or sweep floors • Load/unload dishwasher • Take out rubbish/ recycling • Help prepare simple meals (sandwiches, salads) • Clean bathroom surfaces • Wash the family car • Look after younger siblings briefly (with guidelines) Pocket money idea: $7 to $15 per week.

AGES 12–14 (PRE-TEENS) Focus: Independence and real-world responsibility Chores: • Cook simple meals • Do their own laundry • Clean kitchen properly (benches, dishes, stove wipe-down) • Mow lawns (depending on equipment) • Babysitting (where appropriate) • General house cleaning duties rostered weekly • Help with grocery shopping and unpacking Pocket money idea: $15 to $30 per week (or task-based payment system).

AGES 15–17 (TEENAGERS) Focus: Life skills and preparation for work Chores: • Full meal preparation for family • Deep cleaning bathrooms/kitchen • Lawn mowing and outdoor maintenance • Washing and detailing cars • Grocery planning and cooking dinner • Regular contribution to household chores roster • Part-time job encouraged where possible Pocket money idea: $30+ per week, or shift toward earning from part-time work rather than set allowance.

A home full of stories A HOME FILLED WITH CHARACTER, CREATIVITY AND TREASURED KEEPSAKES. SOMETIMES MEMORIES FADE WITH time, but the little things we keep have a remarkable way of bringing them back in an instant. For Lesley McLellan and Jane O’Brien, two collectors of sorts, this rings particularly true. As their lives continue to move forward, those treasured keepsakes and the stories they hold have found a special place within the warmth of their Shepparton home. A place where the moments and memories that shaped their lives can be remembered, cherished and never truly fade away.

Purchasing their home eight years ago, the couple said they knew it was the place for them, and all their treasured things. “We looked at a few houses, and this one just felt different,” Lesley said. “It looked different than it does now, but it had a really nice feel.” “We didn’t want the run-of-the-mill house where every home looks the same,” Jane added. “This one had a bit of character to it.” It’s quite remarkable how their home makes you feel so full of wonder and so at peace from the moment you step through the front door. It’s warm, intriguing and full of stories and everything has a special place. What’s also unique about this property is that it feels as though the heart of the home can be found in each room, and every carefully chosen item feels as though it is exactly where it should be, simply waiting for the question, “Tell me about this.” With a love for collecting unique pieces rich in character and history, it’s no wonder their home is a reflection of two creative people who believe every treasured find has a story to tell. “We’re lucky that we’re on the same page with collecting because Jane had some stuff and I had some stuff when we moved in together,” Lesley said. “We just had to make it all work.” “I love musical instruments, most of which I don’t play,” Jane said. “Old, rusty, rustic stuff is another theme for both of us.” An abundance of natural light fills every space throughout the home, while soft candlelight creates a warm and inviting ambience.

The kitchen is equally full of character, with ample storage and groovy shelves showcasing herbs, spices and more keepsakes. Lesley, who is also a ceramicist, is currently hand crafting the tiles that will eventually become the kitchen splashback. In fact, her studio is simply the table in the main lounge area, fitting seamlessly into the home, just like everything else. Entirely self-taught, Lesley’s intricate designs are unlike anything else and unmistakably her own. “At one point, we talked about building a little studio for Lesley, but she actually preferred to keep it in the lounge,” Jane said. “This way, we can be cooking dinner or watching a movie, and she can be glazing something or working on a piece without having to go outside and heat or cool another space.” “I just want to make what I love and enjoy the process,” Lesley said. “For me, it’s almost like meditating. “I sell online a little bit, but I don’t want it to turn into a business.” Another eclectic area within the home is like a sunroom or second lounge for the couple. And it is here where their love of collecting can truly be seen. The room is filled with treasures galore including pictures, artworks, old photos, shells, rocks, mirrors, ornaments and the list goes on. And, the plan is to eventually leave no wall space untouched. Among the collection is also an antique barber’s chair, which, according to the pair, has sparked many conversations during their entertaining moments with family and friends. This room also leads outdoors, where the collecting and displaying of more unique pieces continues, while stepping into more entertaining areas. A chandelier hanging from a tree, ornaments swaying from branches, cosy seating and an abundance of unique features ensure there’s always something new to admire. “We love entertaining and having family and friends over,” Jane said.

“Our home definitely gets people talking,” Lesley added. “One time we had a friend over who wanted to know the story behind every item in just one room. “Three hours later, we were still chatting about all the different pieces.” Also outside, the shed continues the same sense of character found throughout the home. Complete with a fireplace, it is a place where the couple also enjoy, however, Jane in particular loves to tinker and spend time working on her own projects out here too. Just like the rest of the property, it is filled with personality and reflects the couple’s shared love of creating spaces that feel uniquely theirs. Throughout every area of the property, whether inside or out, there is a sense of joy. It is a home that invites you in and makes you want to stay. And it’s a home that’s still evolving. A space that encourages others to surround themselves with pieces they love, creating a home filled with meaning, memories and their own unique story. “Your home should be something that represents you, no need to follow trends,” Lesley said. “In gathering symbols and treasures, we are secretly building a room for the soul” is a quote that we heard recently that resonated with us. “I don’t know who quoted this, but we like it.”

Maximise room space A FEW SIMPLE DESIGN CHOICES CAN MAKE A ROOM FEEL OPEN, BRIGHT AND SPACIOUS, WHILE OTHERS CAN HAVE THE OPPOSITE EFFECT. Even the largest rooms can feel cramped if they’re not styled tho ughtfully. Whether you’re working with a compact apartment or simply want to create a greater sense of space, avoiding these common, decorating mistakes can make all the difference. Here are some of the most common, decorating mistakes to avoid. CHOOSING FURNITURE THAT’S TOO LARGE Oversized lounges, bulky coffee tables and heavy cabinetry can quickly overwhelm a room. TOO MUCH CLUTTER Crowded shelves, overflowing bench tops and too many decorative pieces can make even a generous room feel chaotic. Keep styling simple and display only your favourite items. Great for: Skies, oceans, flowers and abstract art. WET-ON-DRY Paint directly onto dry paper for crisp edges and more control. • Use different brush sizes. • Layer colours once the first layer has dried. Great for: Animals, landscapes and lettering. SALT TEXTURES Create starburst patterns. • Paint an area while it’s still wet. • Sprinkle table salt over the paint. • Let it dry completely before brushing the salt away. Great for: Galaxies, snowy scenes and underwater paintings. WAX RESIST A favourite with kids. • Draw with a white crayon or candle first.

CLING WRAP TEXTURE Create beautiful crystal-like effects. • Paint a section generously. • Lay scrunched-up cling wrap over the wet paint. • Leave until dry before removing. Perfect for rocks, tree bark and fantasy backgrounds. SPLATTER PAINTING A little messy but lots of fun. • Load your brush with paint. • Tap it against another brush or your finger. • Create stars, rain, confetti or flowers. Use newspaper or an old tablecloth underneath. GRADIENT WASH Learn how colours fade smoothly. • Start with a strong colour. • Gradually add more water as you paint across the page. Great for: Sunsets and backgrounds. NATURE PRINTING Collect leaves, ferns or flowers. • Paint one side. • Press onto paper. • Lift carefully to reveal a print. A lovely outdoor activity. BUBBLE PAINTING Mix watercolour with a little dish soap. • Blow bubbles through a straw into the mixture. • Place paper on top of the bubbles to create prints. Always blow out through the straw, not in. THERE IS SOMETHING TRULY magical about the way ceramic artist Angie Russi transforms humble earth into beautiful, lasting works of art, each one reflecting creativity, craftsmanship and a story all of its own. And you only have to step inside her Rushworth studio to see just how unique her creations are. From elegant vases and delicate mugs to bespoke plates, homewares and striking statement pieces, Angie creates handcrafted ceramics using porcelain and high-fired stoneware clay. Every piece is a one-of-a-kind artwork, either thrown on the wheel before being enhanced with sculptural elements or carefully hand-built and sculpted by hand. No two creations are ever exactly the same. Her collection is constantly evolving, with every new piece showcasing fresh ideas, beautiful textures and a thoughtfully curated palette of colours inspired by the natural world. For Angie, clay is a medium that continually challenges and inspires her. “I love that no two pieces are ever the same,” she said. “Clay has a mind of its own sometimes, and that’s part of the beauty of it.

“Every stage of the process — from forming the piece to opening the kiln — is filled with anticipation, and I still get excited every single time.” Visitors to Angie’s Rushworth studio will find shelves filled with an ever-changing collection of ceramics, from functional everyday pieces to sculptural artworks designed to become treasured additions to any home. “I want people to find something they connect with,” she said. “Whether it’s a mug they use every morning or a statement piece that reminds them of a special place or moment, I hope my work becomes part of their story.” As well as creating her own collection, Angie enjoys sharing her passion through workshops and classes, helping others discover the joy of working with clay. “Seeing someone create something with their own hands for the first time is incredibly rewarding,” she said. “Everyone can find their inner artist, and working with clay is a tactile and very accessible way to do so. “It’s about slowing down, being creative and embracing the process. Everyone leaves having made something that’s uniquely theirs.” Alongside her own collection, Angie also welcomes commission work and loves the opportunity to create meaningful, one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by her clients’ ideas. Pear and Peach Overnight Oats GET A HEAD START ON THE DAY WITH OUR FLAVOURSOME OVERNIGHT OATS. INGREDIENTS • 1 cup oats • 1 cup milk • 2 tsp cinnamon • ½ cup chia seeds Peach • 1 tsp honey • ½ cup Goulburn Valley peaches, reserve ¼ cup liquid • 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds Pear • ½ cup Goulburn Valley pears, reserve ¼ cup liquid • 1 tbsp dried cranberries • 2 tbsp almonds, chopped METHOD In a bowl mix together oats, milk, cinnamon and seeds. LOVE IT OR LOATHE it, the 1970s had a style all of its own. Think earthy colour palettes, bold florals, timber panelling and shaggy carpets, not to mention all the quirky bits and bobs that could be found around the home. However, while many homes and people have left the decade far behind, Tatura’s Russell Smith has embraced it. Purchasing his 1970s home a mere five years ago, Russell decided that rather than trying to renovate it, he’d run with it — and that’s exactly what he’s done. Today, his property not only boasts a north-facing design and an array of natural light throughout on his long and narrow block, but is also somewhat of a ‘70s museum.

He’s preserved its charm perfectly and, from the front door to the back, it’s like stepping back in time. “When I first looked at it, I thought, ‘Oh man, all this timber panelling,’” Russell said with a smile. “I knew I could rip it all out and spend an absolute fortune plastering it all, but the ceiling heights were low and certain other elements were going to be really challenging and expensive to change. “I think when people lean into things like this, rather than trying to change them, you can actually get a better result. “People that see it actually sort of love it. I think for some people it could be a bit too much because there’s a lot going on, but they’re either into it or they’re not.” When Russell talks about the challenging aspects of the property that would be difficult to change, he was referring to the endless amount of built-in furnishings. And he wasn’t fabricating those challenges. Let’s just say, if you didn’t have much furniture, you wouldn’t need it. Built-in beds with storage, built-in bedside tables, built-in bookshelves, built-in wardrobes, built-in desks, built-in lighting panels, built-in cabinetry — built-in, built-in, built-in everything. The storage solutions are incredible, but yes, removing all of these built-in furnishings could really open up a whole new set of issues. “Everything is built in and to match,” he said. “The beauty is it makes it clean and uncluttered. “My partner always jokes with me about my house being so neat. It’s handy having a lot of storage and places to hide things,” he added with a laugh. Admitting his partner and he were very different when it came to their interior design styles, she is a minimalist, he somewhat of a collector, Russell said if they ever did move in together, there would be no way their styles could merge. Although, he added with a smile, that maybe he was slowly rubbing off on her. “She used to only have one lamp, now she might have six,” Russell joked. “I love lamps and soft lighting.”

Russell also loves lots of quirky things, but in saying that, most of those quirky pieces are true reflections of the 1970s. They are what help bring the era to life throughout the home, creating a space that feels like a step back in time, while still being very much Russell’s own. From fluro-coloured Tupperware and an old computer to artworks, earthy brown and orange tones, vintage furniture, collector’s items and a large selection of plants, every corner reveals another piece of the past. It truly feels like a wondrous space showcasing the years gone by, where memories, collections and character all come together. Even the bathroom remains true to the era, continuing the home’s unmistakable retro charm. “I think I counted once that there were more than 100 plants,” Russell said. “Everything has just come together over the years, and I’ve been able to decorate it exactly how I’ve wanted to. “This home is purely me.” Rather than seeing the home’s original features as something to replace, Russell believes they are what make it special. His advice to others looking at older properties is to consider what can be celebrated, rather than immediately changed. “Think about the money that you’re going to spend and where you’re really going to get the bang for your buck that increases your living, your quality of life and enjoyment,” Russell said. “You can spend $20,000 or $30,000 re-plastering, repainting and re-carpeting, but is that really different? “Spend $10,000 on nice furniture, all the things that you want, and go on a couple of trips.”

METHOD In a large sauce pot, add the olive oil and spices. Add your nduja and cook for another couple of minutes. Then deglaze the pan with the vinegar and white wine. Then add your tomatoes with garlic and basil and bring to the simmer. Once it begins to simmer add your mussels and cover with a lid. Cook for a few minutes until all the mussels are opened. Remove from the heat and add the parsley and season to taste. Serve with crusty sourdough.

Zucchini Cannelloni with Ricotta and Peas INGREDIENTS • 1½ cups frozen peas • 2 eggs • 1½ cups fresh firm ricotta • 2 cups baby spinach leaves, roughly chopped • ¼ cup finely chopped mint • 2 tsp finely grated lemon rind • sea salt and cracked black pepper, to taste • 3–4 large zucchinis, thinly sliced lengthways using a mandolin, you’ll need about 24 long slices • 2 cans Ardmona Crushed Vine Ripened Tomatoes • 1 tbsp olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • ½ cup (50 g) grated mozzarella

METHOD Preheat oven to 180°C Place the peas in a colander and rinse them under hot running water to thaw. Drain and place in a big bowl, roughly mash the peas with a fork. Crack eggs on top and add the ricotta, spinach, mint, lemon rind, salt and pepper. Mix well. Place 1 heaped tablespoon of the pea mixture at one end of each slice of zucchini. Roll up the slices to enclose the filling. To make the sauce, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a pan. Cook the garlic for 2 minutes, make sure not to burn. Add the tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes or until thickened. Pour the purée tomato sauce into a baking dish. Nestle the zucchini rolls into the dish so they fit snugly. Sprinkle with the mozzarella and bake for 30 minutes or until golden and cooked through. Take dish from oven and allow to cool a little, before serving. Apricot Tiramisu INGREDIENTS • 700 g Goulburn Valley Apricots Halved in Juice • 50 g apricot brandy • 1 cup heavy cream • ½ cup mascarpone • 6 tbsp of castor sugar or more if you want it sweeter. • 300 g ladyfinger biscuits METHOD Drain the apricots and put juice aside. Mix the apricot juice with a good splash of apricot brandy and soak the lady finger biscuits in a flat tray. Take half of the apricots without the juice and blend them. Add mascarpone, cream, and sugar, then mix until smooth. Set aside the other apricot halves. Start layering into your glasses with the ladyfingers, its ok if they crumble a bit, add some of the prepared cream on top and layer with the left-over halved apricots. Keep layering this way until you reach the top. Chill in the fridge until ready to serve. Decorate with passionfruit pulp, fresh mint, grated chocolate, or whatever you desire. Source: SPC

Prune and Malt Dark Chocolate Cake

INGREDIENTS • 225 g prunes in natural juice, drained pitted and chopped • ½ cup Kings of Tartan non alcoholic malt beverage • 2 tbsp dark brown sugar • finely grated zest of 2 oranges • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • pinch ground chilli • 400 g dark chocolate (70 per cent cocoa) • 200 g unsalted butter • 6 eggs, separated • ½ tsp cream of tartar • ¼ cup caster sugar • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 1½ cups gluten-free plain flour • hot chocolate powder, to dust • marinated prunes and crème fraiche, to serve

METHOD Preheat oven to 160°C. Combine the chopped prunes, malt beverage, brown sugar, orange zest and spices

in a small saucepan and set over a moderate heat, simmering until the liquid has all evaporated. Set aside to cool. Put the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl and set over a saucepan of barely simmering water, stirring until melted. Place the egg whites in the bowl of an electric mixer with the cream of tartar and beat with the whisk attachment on medium speed until very foamy. Increase the speed to high, then begin adding the caster sugar 1 tablespoon at a time, whisking until very thick. Fold the prunes, yolks and vanilla into the chocolate mixture, then fold in the meringue very gently, adding the flour 1 tablespoon at a time as it mixes. Spoon into a lined 24 cm cake tin and bake for 40–45 minutes, until just firm to touch. Cool completely on a wire rack. Dust with hot chocolate powder then serve with marinated prunes and crème fraiche. SOURCE: SPC

Baked Bean Bake with Mashed Potato

INGREDIENTS • 1 onion, chopped • 1 carrot, grated • 400 g lean beef mince • 2 clove garlic, crushed • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground coriander • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 1 tsp tomato paste • 1 handful fresh basil, finely chopped

• ¼ tsp chilli flakes (or more to taste) • 1x 425 g SPC Baked Beans In Rich Tomato • 4 sebago potatoes, washed and peeled and chopped into quarters • ½ cup milk • 3 tbsp butter • ½ cup shredded tasty cheese • salt and pepper to taste

METHOD Preheat the oven to 200°C. Heat a dash of oil in a deep frying pan. Add onion and cook over medium heat until beginning to soften. Increase the heat and add mince and garlic. Stir fry to brown meat, breaking up mince with a fork if necessary. Lower the heat, stir in cumin, coriander, basil, grated carrot and chilli flakes. Stir in SPC Baked Beans and tomato paste, if you need more liquid, add some water to create a sauce. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer until mince is cooked and sauce reduced. Meanwhile, make the mashed potatoes. Cook potatoes in boiling lightly salted water for 15–20 minutes until tender. Drain well. Mash. Mix through butter and milk until smooth and creamy, add extra milk if necessary. Spoon cooked mince and beans into an ovenproof dish. Top with mashed potato and sprinkle over grated cheese. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and heated through. Serve with a delicious green salad. Source: SPC

So, don’t worry, if you get tongue-tied or need to start your sentence again, that’s absolutely fine, I have tools to fix that. It’s not live radio, thankfully. COMPOSTING IS AN EASY way to reduce household waste, while creating nutrient-rich food for your garden. Whether you have a large backyard or a small outdoor space, there are plenty of options to get started. Choose a shaded spot for your compost bin or tumbler and aim for a balance of “greens” and “browns”. Green materials such as fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and fresh lawn clippings provide nitrogen, while brown materials including dry leaves,

cardboard and twigs add carbon. Avoid adding meat, dairy, oils and treated materials, as these can attract pests or slow down the composting process. Turn your compost regularly to help it break down and add a little water if it becomes too dry. Music in the wind CREATE A STYLISH METAL WIND CHIME THAT PRODUCES SOOTHING, MUSICAL TONES EVERY TIME THE BREEZE BLOWS. 1. Cut or source hollow metal tubes in a variety of lengths to create different tones. 2. Drill a small hole near the top of each tube and thread strong nylon cord or fishing line through each one.

3. Secure the tubes evenly around a wooden disc, metal ring or piece of driftwood, leaving enough space for them to move freely. 4. A path worth paving CREATE A CHARMING AND DURABLE OUTDOOR FEATURE WITH THIS STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO BUILDING YOUR OWN BRICK PATH, FROM PREPARING THE GROUND TO LAYING THE FINAL BRICK. WHAT YOU’LL NEED • Bricks or pavers • Tape measure • Stakes and string line • Shovel and rake • Wheelbarrow • Spirit level • Plate compactor (hire if needed) • Road base or crushed rock • Bedding sand • Rubber mallet • Brick saw or angle grinder with masonry blade (if cutting bricks) • Edging (metal, plastic, timber or concrete) • Broom • Polymeric sand or fine paving sand STEP 1: PLAN YOUR PATH Decide where your path will go and how wide it should be. A width of 900 mm–1200 mm is comfortable for one or two people to walk side by side. STEP 2: MARK OUT THE AREA Use stakes and string to outline the path. If you want curves, use a garden hose or spray paint to mark the shape before digging. STEP 3: DIG THE FOUNDATION Excavate the path to a depth of about: • 100 mm of road base • 25–30 mm of bedding sand • Brick thickness (typically 50–60 mm) This usually means digging about 180–200 mm deep. Remove all grass, roots and loose soil. STEP 4: COMPACT THE SOIL Use a plate compactor or hand tamper to firmly compact the exposed soil. A solid base prevents future sinking. STEP 5: ADD THE ROAD BASE Spread around 100 mm of crushed rock or road base. Compact it well, ideally in two 50 mm layers for maximum stability.

STEP 8: LAY THE BRICKS Start from one straight edge or corner. Lay each brick firmly onto the sand, keeping consistent gaps of 2–3 mm. Popular laying patterns include: • Running bond • Herringbone • Basket weave Check levels regularly with a spirit level. STEP 9: CUT BRICKS IF NEEDED Measure carefully around curves or edges and cut bricks using a masonry saw or angle grinder fitted with a diamond blade. Always wear eye, ear and dust protection. STEP 10: COMPACT THE BRICKS Once all bricks are laid, run a plate compactor fitted with a protective rubber mat over the surface to bed the bricks into the sand. STEP 11: FILL THE JOINTS Sweep polymeric sand or fine paving sand into all joints until completely full. If using polymeric sand, lightly mist with water according to the manufacturer’s instructions to harden the joints. STEP 12: FINAL TIDY UP Sweep away excess sand and inspect the path for any uneven bricks. Tap high bricks down gently with a rubber mallet and add more sand where needed. TIPS FOR A LONG-LASTING PATH • Allow a slight fall (about 1:100) so rainwater drains away. • Use quality road base rather than soil alone. • Compact each layer thoroughly — this is the key to preventing movement. • Install edging before laying bricks for the neatest finish. • Top up jointing sand every few years if necessary. With a solid foundation and careful preparation, a brick path can last for decades with minimal maintenance.
