For as long as I can remember, my mind has always wandered into fairytales with happy endings and true love.

I mean, who doesn’t want that headover-heels feeling, with rainbows, sunsets and the perfect wedding day?

But that’s the thing, we all have our own ideas of what that day may look like.

A field of flowers in the middle of nowhere, just the two of you, a celebrant and your nearest and dearest, small and intimate.

A destination wedding that turns into a holiday, or an elopement overseas.

Or maybe you’re dreaming of something grand, with a dance floor packed with hundreds of your friends and family, celebrating the night away.

Either way, that choice is yours, and the opportunities are endless.

As not only the editor of this magazine, but also the sole writer, it has truly been magical bringing these pages to life.

Eleven couples from around the region shared their love stories with me, from how and when they first met, to the journey of planning their weddings and everything that made their day special.

Some celebrations were small, others absolutely huge, but every single one was

unique and unforgettable.

I thoroughly enjoyed going on this journey with each couple to bring their stories to life within these pages.

In saying that, if you’re looking for inspiration, you’re in the right place.

Alongside the love stories, I also coordinated a large-scale mock wedding photoshoot, bringing together talented models and suppliers from across the region.

From the bride’s gown to the groom’s suit, the cake, flowers, venue, hair and make-up, styling, and of course, the photographer who captured it all so effortlessly, it was an incredible shoot and so much fun to be part of.

The team and I hope you love the images scattered throughout the magazine.

They’re packed with inspiration and a little model magic too.

As this is the very first edition of the publication, I wanted to make sure it was filled with everything you need to plan your special day and more.

TAYLA SMITH AND TYLER DAMON

NOVEMBER 27, 2025 // THE LODGE AT LURG

A dating app, a movie night and some delicious Thai cuisine kicked off relationship flutters for Tayla Smith and Tyler Damon more than 10 years ago.

And the pair say it was the way they supported each other through both the good and bad times that truly made them realise they were meant to be.

However, for Tayla in particular, it was the way Tyler supported her through the passing of her mother that meant the most.

Phillip Island set the scene for the “on one knee” proposal during a romantic weekend away.

“We booked a weekend away and upon attending a romantic beach walk, Tyler dropped to one knee,” Tayla said.

“We then spent the next 12 months planning our wedding.”

Wanting a relaxed, rustic vibe wedding that incorporated their favourite people without any fuss or chaos, the couple locked in The Lodge at Lurg as their

destination, celebrating with 120 guests.

Inspired by rich, warm earthy tones including orange, yellow, pink and white, their rustic vision was executed with style.

Bridal party members dressed in black, which elegantly tied in with Tayla’s sequined, square neck, flowy dress with a train, while Tyler wore a white suit jacket, black pants, white shirt and black bow tie.

The morning of the wedding brought a mix of calmness and excitement.

“The morning of the wedding I was pretty calm to be honest,” Tayla said.

“I had a relaxing morning with the girls and felt excited.

“Tyler was excited the morning of the wedding, however, the nerves hit hard right before the ceremony.

“I did a first look with my dad, however waited until the aisle to see Tyler, where he bawled his eyes out the moment he laid eyes on me.”

The moment Tayla saw Tyler waiting for

her at the end of the aisle with a big smile and tears in his eyes was one of her most emotional memories of the day.

Speeches delivered both funny and embarrassing memories that Tayla said were absolutely perfect, but her standout moment was the vows.

“The reading of our personal vows and the moment Tyler mentioned our biggest adventure yet — our daughter, who was born in March,” Tayla said.

“And the moment our sausage dog tribe delivered the rings down the aisle to us.”

The couple also included a memorial table for family members who had passed and a personalised crossword all about themselves for guests to enjoy — simple yet thoughtful touches that completed their well-planned day.

“You’ve just got to live in the moment and enjoy every minute,” Tayla said.

“Everybody told us and we never believed it, but it’s true — it goes far too fast.”

REBECCA FINGER AND SEDAT CIFITI

NOVEMBER 1, 2025 // OLIVEHOUSE AT GREENDALE GROVE, KIALLA

Rebecca Finger and Sedat Ciftci’s love story began when they were just teenagers at school.

Introduced by friends, the pair moved through different seasons of life, but Rebecca said she always had a feeling from the very beginning that Sedat was “the one.”

“There was this undeniable pull that always drew us back to each other,” she said.

“No matter where we were or what we were doing, it became clear that he was the person I was always meant to return to.”

Sedat proposed in May 2023 during a day trip to Marysville, popping the question on a waterfall walk.

Unaware of what he had planned, Rebecca had invited friends along — and, as fate would have it, they were there to capture the special moment when Sedat got down on one knee.

After two and a half years of planning, and following their engagement party on the November long weekend, the couple chose to marry on the same long weekend two years later.

Opting for a full outdoor sit-down wedding at Olivehouse at Greendale Grove in Kialla, their special day

showcased minimal styling and modern romance, with a subtle Vogueinspired edge.

“On the day, my vision came to life, and it was so much more spectacular than I even imagined,” Rebecca said.

“It was the perfect backdrop for a love story years in the making — a modern garden romance filled with heart, energy and unforgettable moments.”

Having been together for close to 14 years, the couple chose to skip tradition the night before and stay together, waking up side by side, excited for the day ahead.

Rebecca said it didn’t feel like their wedding marked the beginning of their future, but rather a celebration of a love already well established, shared with their closest family and friends.

The couple organised a special reveal with their family and bridal party, giving them the chance to complete formal photos before the ceremony.

“Sedat definitely understood the assignment, with an over-the-top reaction when he turned around — it made for great photos,” Rebecca said.

“It was so special to share that moment with our family and bridal party, and having our formal photos done early meant we could spend more time with

our guests.”

Like every wedding, there were plenty of standout moments.

Rebecca laughed recalling placing Sedat’s ring on the wrong finger, while the emotional highlights came from being surrounded by loved ones — and, of course, dancing the night away.

“Another favourite memory was taking our night portraits as we were so relaxed by then, with all the formalities out of the way, and we could just have fun with it,” she said.

“Sedat is Turkish, so he made a spectacular entrance with his friends and family, walking down the long driveway with drums and flares.

“It was incredible to watch, and so many guests commented on how amazing it was.

“We also had drummers and Turkish instruments at the reception, which really lifted the energy and created a party atmosphere.”

After the wedding, the couple enjoyed a relaxing getaway to the Gold Coast following months of planning.

Later this year, they plan to travel to Europe for their official honeymoon, with dreams of exploring more of the world together while growing their family.

ELIZABETH MELLINO AND NATHAN VARAPODIO

SEPTEMBER 21, 2024 // MELBOURNE

On a night out in 2014 at the iconic Yahoo Bar in Shepparton, Elizabeth Mellino and Nathan Varapodio crossed paths.

After only a few encounters, Elizabeth said it was clear Nathan was quite smitten.

“He tried very hard to win me over until I finally gave in, and we went on our first date on Valentine’s Day in 2014, with Nathan taking me to Cold Rock,” she said.

Later that same year, on September 21, Nathan asked Elizabeth to be his “official girlfriend” — and, as fate would have it, the couple married exactly 10 years later on the very same date.

Both believing a strong relationship is built on friendship, the pair quickly formed a deep bond, with their romance blossoming from there.

On July 30, 2022, Nathan proposed.

With the ring tucked tightly in his jacket pocket, he made the walk to the top of Mt Major in Dookie, with Elizabeth completely unaware of what was to come.

“I had been asking him to go for a walk up Mt Major for months, and he finally gave in and said we would go one Saturday,” Elizabeth said.

“Little did I know, he had my ring and was planning to propose.

“When we got to the top lookout, I told him to stand with his back to me so I could take a photo. Then he told me to do the same, and when I turned around, he was on one knee with the ring.

“We were the only two people at the top — we didn’t even pass anyone on the walk up. It was just the two of us, and it was absolutely perfect.”

The couple spent around 18 months planning their wedding, carefully deciding on the venue and the size of their celebration.

Once they settled on a venue with a dance floor big enough for their Italian

and Macedonian families, everything else fell into place.

On the morning of their wedding, both Nathan and Elizabeth were surrounded by family and their bridal party, with Elizabeth saying those moments helped set the tone for the perfect day.

The ceremony was held at the Dormition of Our Lady Greek Orthodox Church in Altona, but just before it began, a moment of panic unfolded.

In keeping with Orthodox tradition, crowns and candles are required for the ceremony — and they had been accidentally left behind in Nathan’s hotel room, 40 minutes away.

“Myself and the bridesmaids had already made the 40-minute trip to the church and were waiting nearby,” Elizabeth said.

“After my sister-in-law received a panicked phone call to say the crowns were still at the hotel, panic came over all of us.

“Thankfully, a wedding guest stepped in, arranging for the hotel to send the crowns and candles in an Uber to the church. An hour later, we were able to continue with the ceremony.”

Having all their loved ones together in one place — with family and friends

mingling effortlessly — was one of the most memorable parts of the day.

Elizabeth said seeing Nathan waiting at the end of the aisle, beaming as she walked towards him, was a moment she will never forget.

Other highlights included a quiet 20-minute car ride alone as newlyweds, the father-daughter dance, Macedonian drummers at the reception, and honouring loved ones who had passed with candles and photographs — all topped off by a packed dance floor.

Their day unfolded exactly as they had hoped.

“When Nathan and I go to weddings, we always leave talking about the food and the music, so we knew those had to be standouts for us,” Elizabeth said.

“We wanted everyone on the dance floor all night — and Siesta Cartel made sure that happened.”

Now, the couple are settling into their new home, building a life together and creating their own traditions.

“The day goes so quickly, and everyone tells you that,” Elizabeth said.

“We would give anything to relive it — it was everything we could have hoped for and more.”

TAYLA JUNOR AND TODD BROADBENT

NOVEMBER 15, 2025 // PERRICOOTA STATION, MOAMA

Both realising on their very first date in 2023 at Lake Weeroona in Bendigo that neither wanted the date to end, Tayla Junor and Todd Broadbent’s love story began.

However, the couple later discovered they had actually met seven years earlier, after a Facebook memory popped up, as they do.

“Todd was dressed as the Australian volleyball mascot (a kangaroo) when the Aussie volleyball team was playing in Bendigo, and I went along with some uni friends to watch and got a photo with the mascot,” Tayla said with a chuckle.

Engaged in 2024 near Whittlesea, Todd’s planned surprise proposal nearly didn’t go ahead after last-minute accommodation issues threatened their getaway.

The moment eventually unfolded at accommodation in a tiny house, where after a day of acting “very suspicious,” Todd got down on one knee and asked Tayla to marry him, with an emotional “yes” following plenty of tears and laughter.

Wedding planning began almost immediately, with the couple tying the knot 12 months later at Perricoota Station in Moama.

Tayla said seeing Todd waiting at the end of the aisle was a moment they will both remember forever.

“We were both just so happy and excited to see each other and finally get married,” she said.

“Entering our reception and getting onto the dance floor, having all of the people we both love in the same place to celebrate with us was definitely one of our highlights.

“We absolutely loved our whole wedding day and didn’t want it to end.”

According to the couple, the speeches from parents, the best man and maid of honour delivered some of the biggest laughs of the day, while a standout moment was being announced as husband and wife.

Todd reportedly carried most of the nerves throughout the day, but Tayla said they were just excited everything they had

planned was finally happening and falling into place.

“We would honestly relive our whole day – we were so sad when it was over and just wanted to do it all again,” she said.

“Minus the planning and the money,” she added with a laugh.

“The dance floor was another highlight for us. We honestly didn’t leave it from the moment it started.”

Looking back, Tayla said couples should make sure they spend as much time together as possible on the day.

“Soak it all up – everyone says it goes quick, and it absolutely does.”

Today, the couple are enjoying married life, calling each other husband and wife, while jumping into continued holiday adventures, with Tayla also appreciating never having to plan a wedding again.

“Be organised. Book vendors early –especially the ones that are non-negotiables or really important to you,” she said.

“It’s your day – do what you want, and don’t worry about what others think or might think.”

What started as a simple night out in Shepparton in 2016 with mutual friends became the beginning of a love story for Gemma Rovers and Robert Marsden.

Marking 10 years together this year, Gemma said Robert’s willingness to embrace any challenge was something she had always admired.

“When he didn’t shy away from horses, farm life and all the crazy things that come with it, I realised he was someone special,” she said.

“He chose to follow me interstate as I pursued my career, and that was one of the many reasons I knew he was the one.”

It was among wombats and the breathtaking scenery of Cradle Mountain, Tasmania, that Rob proposed.

Determined to reach a lookout overlooking a lake, he led Gemma to the perfect spot.

“This is where he got down on one knee and read me a beautiful letter he had written, ending with a proposal,” Gemma said.

“We kept it a surprise from friends and family until we returned home from

our holiday.”

Planning their wedding became a true “many hands make light work” effort, and with the support of family and friends, the couple created a rustic, vintage farm-style celebration on their family property.

“On the morning of our wedding, we were almost too exhausted from the set-up to be nervous,” Gemma said.

“As the hours crept by, the nerves certainly increased — it was more the anticipation of what the day would hold. There was so much excitement in the house.”

The couple agreed their first look would be as Gemma walked down the aisle, surrounded by their loved ones.

Gemma said seeing Rob in that moment was overwhelming.

“That look on Rob’s face is a memory I will cherish forever,” she said.

With so many unforgettable moments throughout the day, the couple found it impossible to choose just one favourite.

However, climbing grain silos in a white dress, veil and boots for epic photo and video opportunities was certainly a

standout — and a challenge.

“Rob had to carry the train of the dress all the way to the top,” she said.

“But the view when we got there was absolutely perfect.”

The couple chose to write personal vows, describing the experience of declaring their love in front of family and friends as nothing short of magical.

Walking back down the aisle as husband and wife, with confetti filling the air, was another moment they will never forget.

A grounding moment during the day came when they took time that morning to write each other personal messages.

“We read these in the chaos of getting ready, and it really brought everything back to the love that got us to that point,” Gemma said.

With everything falling into place — no rain (perhaps thanks to a superstitious whiskey bottle burial a month prior), delicate styling, warm lights and a clear marquee showcasing the stunning surrounds — it’s safe to say their wedding day was everything they had dreamed of and more.

Meeting in high school, Elizabeth Duddridge and Bradley Phyland had an undeniable connection that has now seen them together for nine years.

Engaged in 2023 on the beach in Aireys Inlet, Elizabeth said Bradley still talks about the moment to this day.

“He always talks about how he was so nervous and was waiting for a man and his dog to leave before he proposed, but I was too fixated on the dog to notice,” she said.

Taking a couple of years to enjoy being engaged before jumping into wedding planning in 2025, the couple said their special day was always going to be small and intimate.

Green, white and soft pinks made up the colour palette given to the florist, and with no overspending needed, Elizabeth’s bridal gown was purchased from The Iconic for just $200, while Bradley wore a classic black tux.

The restored 1930s Modern Country Estate in Shepparton, with its white farmhouse charm and two acres of lush gardens, set the tone as their nearest and dearest — just 20 guests — gathered to celebrate.

“My vision for the day was something close and intimate, really minimal and classic, not overly trendy, so we would love all the photos forever,” Elizabeth said.

“I love the gardens at the Modern Country Estate, so wanted that to shine through in the pictures.”

Nerves and excitement surrounded the couple on the morning of their wedding, but once the ceremony began, so did the tears.

“It was special to be able to walk down the aisle to a piano instrumental version of Brad’s favourite song, Drops of Jupiter,” Elizabeth said.

“Plenty of tears shed from the both of us.”

Elizabeth said she and Bradley put a lot of thought and effort into their vows, which became the most cherished part of their day, adding that hearing them spoken out loud was a very special moment in time.

However, it was the intimacy of the celebration that remained a standout.

“I have a couple of friends that never even considered how small and intimate a wedding could be and are now excited to have something similar in the future,” Elizabeth said.

“I’d definitely relive those moments just after the ceremony when it was just Brad and I taking our photos with Bec.

“The excitement and giddy feeling, and Bec making us feel so comfortable, walking around the gardens and just enjoying our first few moments married.”

Elizabeth also took on the task of baking her own wedding cake — something she is well known for — saying it wasn’t anything fancy, but it was made with so much love.

The couple added another personal touch by writing individual notes to each guest, thanking them for the role they had played in their lives.

“Little things like those felt so special on the day and is one of the many perks about a small wedding,” Elizabeth said.

“Once you break away from what others think a wedding should look like and instead think about what you would like, the planning feels effortless.

“Such a freeing feeling to break away from the norm and do whatever you want.

“The whole atmosphere of having our closest people around us, feeling the love and being so comfortable and relaxed on our day is something we will remember forever.”

KYLIE KOTUA AND DAYNA LANG

AUGUST 23, 2025 // SHEPPARTON

All things Gothic, heavy metal, and the colours black and red were tastefully woven into Kylie Kotua and Dayna Lang’s wedding day last year in Shepparton, symbolising what the couple loves best.

However, the night before their wedding was just as eventful as the big day itself, with both admitting they woke up tired after an epic night — a concert in Melbourne will do that.

“Once we set a wedding date, we made a promise that we would not purchase any concert tickets before the wedding, unless it was one of our three select favourites — and then one band announced a tour and of course it was the night before the wedding,” Kylie said.

“And it was the band who sings the song that I was walking down the aisle to, so we thought what a special way to spend the night before the wedding, going to see one of our favourite bands (Smash Into Pieces). We also had VIP tickets.

“We got to meet the band members, and they gave us a personalised signed poster with a personal message, which we will always hold very dear to our hearts.”

Kylie refers fondly to Dayna as “Damo” and cheekily as her “stalker” after the pair met online, became friends, and then he quite literally tracked her down in the street.

“Damo was more keen to meet, and I was holding back, however he spotted my car in town and waited by it until I walked back,” Kylie said.

“He said, ‘Hello!’”

“He proposed to me on Valentine’s Day, near where we first met — where he ‘stalked’ my car — which I thought was super sweet. It will always be ‘our spot’.”

On the day of the wedding, alongside being a little tired, the couple opted to save their first glance for the aisle.

However, Damo couldn’t quite help himself, sending Kylie a Snapchat selfie — to which she cheekily replied with a photo of her shoes, knee-high Converse.

In full red and black style, Kylie’s wedding dress screamed Gothic vibes, and the theme carried through every detail of the day.

From rings presented in coffin boxes to a red and black guest dress code, decorative skulls and even photos taken

at the cemetery after the ceremony at the Orrvale Wedding Shed, it was an incredibly unique celebration filled with fun.

The reception rolled into the evening with a sit-down meal and plenty of laughter at the Aussie Hotel, shared with around 20 of their favourite people.

Although, amid all the fun, the couple said there were some very emotional and special moments throughout the day — ones they will carry with them for life.

“The fact neither of us pre-wrote our vows, and we both just winged it, made it even more meaningful for each other,” Kylie said.

“Damo’s moment was seeing me walk

down the aisle. But seeing James (Damo’s brother) cry tears of happiness after the ‘I do’s’ was very special.

“The whole day was just very ‘US’ and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Today, the married couple is enjoying attending as many concerts and gigs as possible, and have shared the importance of planning a wedding that truly reflects your own values — even if it’s a little unconventional.

“Don’t over complicate it. You don’t need elaborate spendages. Go with a theme you both love. Don’t follow ‘traditional trends’,” Kylie said.

“After it all, it’s just you and your best friend every day — and it’s bliss.”

Which flowers and colours are trending? White will always be popular, they are classical and work well with all styles. We love when we get to work with colour, bold terracotta’s and burgundy or poppy sorbet tones have been popular.

Reception tables

What’s trending for table centrepieces? The European Influenced styling, beautiful linens and ribbon tied place cards or menus. I think it’s about the layers of texture that give an elevated, cohesive look. A few small but abundant bud vases can be added, or small nested arrangements which add to the look but don’t overwhelm.

Are floral runners or garlands on tables making a comeback? Depending on the venue and the overall theme, floral garlands can look great, again it is about the feel the couple wants to achieve. We are still seeing ceiling installs in some venues and an abundance of blooms and bar florals.

Any bold textures or unexpected pairings you’re seeing? We are still seeing fruit styling on tables which adds an interesting element to the table and flowers. Again the layer of textures with linens, glassware, candles adds to the florals arrangements.

Ceremony statements

What are the must-have show-stopping pieces? Ceremony flowers are a brilliant way to frame the space, they may be free standing or placed on plinths to add height. Sculptural grasses are trending and can be a really different way to create something unique. En Masse florals, just concentrating on two or three flowers, is also a way of adding a “wow” factor.

Flower arches, hanging arrangements, or something new? Flower arches are still popular in winery and river venues, but not just the traditional shape, we have designed many on a triangle arbour which just gives a different look. I think we will continue to see the nested floral meadow for spring 2026.

Symmetry or asymmetry — what’s in style? Asymmetry works well with plinths, giving different heights and nested ground florals to balance the design. Usually with an arbour we would always have an asymmetrical design, heavier on the left side and a smaller piece on the right.

How do florists make ceremony pieces truly memorable? By designing seasonally and intentionally, taking into account the venue space and couple. By creating these as a focal we can create an impact at various points throughout the ceremony.

Trends and tips

How are couples balancing style and budget? We will always suggest moving florals to the reception makes the most of the budget. We might suggest smaller arrangements, like bud vases for the reception tables,. Depending on the reception style, sometimes we don’t need to do too much there.

What trends are about to take off next season? Petite bouquets with a few hero flowers or sculptural bouquets, again

relying on just a few flowers to create something a little different.

How do social media platforms influence floral choices? Unfortunately, social media can give unrealistic expectations, we don’t know what image has been altered. Trust your florist with the information they give. They will have years of experience and training and have worked with flowers during the seasons. I always refer to the inspiration, as just that, Inspiration, we can never replicate other work.

Any advice for couples who want unique floral designs? Take inspiration from Pinterest or other sources, but let your florist use their expertise to design something that will be unique to you. Work with a colour pallet that compliments the bridal party.

URIAH FITZGERALD-PETTS AND JORDAN CASTLE

When some brides and grooms are worried about rain on their wedding day, Uriah Fitzgerald-Petts and Jordan Castle were worried about the heat.

And as Mother Nature does, with no room for negotiation, it turned out to be a sweltering 40-degree-plus day.

However, that didn’t stop the couple from coming together with their immediate family for an intimate ceremony at Jordan’s parents’ home.

“We wanted to have a small, intimate ceremony with just our families because they’re the ones we care about the most, and we felt like they were the only ones that deserved to witness such a special moment,” Uriah said.

“In saying that, we also really wanted to celebrate with our extended family and closest friends too, so we planned the reception to include those people after the ceremony later in the day.”

Uriah and Jordan’s love story blends family and four adored children — Noah, Kai, Huxley and Adelyn — all woven into one busy, love-filled life.

Meeting through friends at a pub more than six years ago, the couple have since blended their families and welcomed two children together, all while sharing a love of fishing and the outdoors.

“We have lots of stories around camping and fishing, and Jordan actually proposed while fishing,” Uriah said.

“I really didn’t feel like going, but Jordan tried to sweeten the deal by buying me a new lure,” she added with a laugh.

“I lost it anyway, and Jordan started acting all weird in the boat — that’s when he suddenly pulled out the ring and asked me what I thought.”

The rest, as they say, is history. Today, they still enjoy fishing and spending time in their backyard under their tree as a family.

Years of making memories already, and dreams of many more ahead.

Their wedding day was everything they hoped for and more.

“It was super special because it went exactly how we wanted it to,” Uriah said.

“There was a lot of DIY and hard work

on our part involved, so I think that made it extra special.

“We look back on the day and think to ourselves, ‘we did all that.’”

Ingredients (serves 1):

• 60ml whiskey

• 30ml fresh lemon juice

• 15ml sugar syrup

MELANIE TOMLIN AND JOSHUA BROOKS

AUGUST 19, 2023 // BENALLA

With a focus on sustainability and ensuring every guest felt seen and valued, Melanie Tomlin and Joshua Brooks chose their wedding day to reflect their beliefs and their community of loved ones.

The couple met on a dating site in 2019 and began dating a year later.

Not long after, they became engaged spontaneously and bought their wedding bands just three days later.

Melanie said she knew Joshua was “the one” early on while the pair were playing an online game together, while Joshua realised during a trip to the Melbourne Aquarium.

“He looked at me and asked if I wanted to skip the engagement and just get married,” Melanie said.

“We wanted to have a day that reflected us and our values, especially our value of a chosen family and a chosen community.”

The wedding day was filled with morning nerves that soon settled, featuring a black-tie dress code with a dusty blue and pale green colour palette, accented by pops of red in Royal Stewart tartan.

Melanie said Scottish motifs were woven throughout the day in honour of her heritage.

“My grandmother had passed away not long before the wedding, so we used a lot of Scottish traditions, from wearing tartan through to our last song of the night being Loch Lomond,” she said.

“We also chose a traditional Catholic ceremony with contemporary worship music, as we attend a Pentecostal church while also identifying as Catholic.”

Married at St Joseph’s Church in Benalla, the couple’s focus on sustainability extended to the bridal party, with outfits chosen to be worn again rather than purchased for a single occasion.

Shoes were also sourced from items already owned, with everyone embracing the approach.

Some of the most memorable moments of the day centred around music.

“We had Woodlock play at the reception

and they covered a Jessica Lorraine song, which fit in beautifully as Jess is Josh’s sister and Woodlock are my friends, so it felt like families joining as one,” Melanie said.

“When we were signing the certificate, Jess performed an unreleased original called Parachute, which felt really symbolic of Josh and I.”

In another thoughtful touch, the couple used their wedding cake as part of a shared celebration, gifting it to guests who were also marking August birthdays.

Despite a power issue just days before the wedding — which saw four generators used to light the reception hall — the couple said nothing could take away from their day.

“It is a day for you to celebrate with the ones around you, and it is a day that you will only get to enjoy once, so don’t let the stress get the better of you,” Melanie said.

“Remember to laugh when something doesn’t go to plan, because in the grand scheme of things, those are the things that make the day perfectly imperfect.”

GABRIELLA MERCURI AND JOHN VARAPODIO

AUGUST 6, 2025 // CAPO D’ORLANDO, SICILY

When Gabriella Mercuri and John Varapodio got engaged in January 2025, they already had a trip to Europe planned — so they turned their holiday into a destination wedding, choosing Italy as the perfect place to celebrate.

“Our heritage has always held a special place in our hearts and there was no setting more meaningful for us to celebrate our love,” Gabriella said.

“The landscape, the people and of course the food completely captured us.”

The couple were joined by 55 guests who travelled from Australia, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Canada, creating what Gabriella described as an intimate international celebration.

“In true destination-wedding fashion, even the dress had its own journey,” she said.

“It was carefully carried by hand from Melbourne to Rome and then onward to Palermo. With limited space on board, the gown was ultimately entrusted to the pilot and travelled safely in the cockpit.”

Gabriella planned her own wedding in just six months, with WhatsApp bridging communication across multiple countries.

Arriving in Sicily three weeks prior to the wedding, the final planning was confirmed with a good old-fashioned handshake and a trust-in-the-process approach.

The wedding began late in the afternoon, with a 6pm ceremony set within villa grounds, accompanied by piano and vocals.

“We kept the ceremony simple and personal, writing our own vows and incorporating a symbolic olive oil blending ritual,” Gabriella said.

“Olive oil felt especially meaningful as olive trees are deeply rooted in Sicilian culture, known for their resilience and longevity, reflecting the kind of love we’ve built together over time.”

Following the ceremony, guests moved to an Italian aperitivo beneath a 200-year-old magnolia tree, known for its enormous scale and striking aerial roots.

The setting offered panoramic views of the town and ocean, perfectly framed by a breathtaking sunset.

“It was the most beautiful sunset we had seen in the 10 days leading up,” Gabriella said.

“The weather felt nothing short of miraculous.”

The week prior had brought some of Sicily’s most severe conditions in decades, with heavy rain and wild seas.

With no wet weather plan and a fully outdoor wedding, the couple placed their trust in fate.

“On the day, we were gifted with perfect conditions,” she said.

“Twenty-eight degrees, clear skies and not a breath of wind.”

Guests enjoyed rustic Sicilian cuisine, live cooking stations, freshly fried seafood and local street food, followed by a sit-down dinner under fairy lights.

Sicilian sweets, cocktails, prosecco and beer flowed freely throughout the evening.

There was plenty of dancing, along with a traditional millefoglie cake, assembled live in front of guests by a pastry chef — who even invited the bride and groom to help with the piping.

The couple described the day as nothing short of magical.

“It was an experience not just for us, but for everyone who travelled to be part of it,”

Gabriella said.

“A celebration of our continued commitment to one another, and of a love that has already stood the test of time.

“We were grateful for the guests who attended to be there with us.”

On returning to Melbourne, the couple celebrated with loved ones who couldn’t attend, formally signing the papers and recreating elements of the day, later enjoying an afternoon high tea at the Windsor.

ASHLAN HUBBLE AND KYLE KYDD

OCTOBER 25, 2025 // CAPE HORN VINEYARD

When Ashlan Hubble and Kyle Kydd met through friends five-and-a-half years ago, they quickly realised they were right for each other — because by the end of every day, all they wanted was to be together.

Someone to talk to, someone to see.

It was their moment in life where they knew exactly where they wanted to be.

“When I would have a bad day, the only thing that made me feel better was seeing Ashlan,” Kyle said.

“And I wanted to see him at the end of every day, no matter how bad my day was,” Ashlan added.

If Christmas morning isn’t already special enough, that was also the memorable date Kyle chose to propose.

“Kyle had the ring around our beagle’s neck to hide it from me and made me check under the Christmas tree for another present,” Ashlan said.

“When I turned around, he was on one knee holding the ring.”

The couple spent nine months planning their special wedding day, all with a twist and an element of surprise — quite literally, a surprise wedding.

Cape Horn Vineyard showcased their relaxed vibe, surrounded by all the people they love most — their family and friends — and the day went off with a bang.

There were some nerves in the morning, quickly overcome by the flutters of excitement, especially in the moment they saw each other in the aisle ready to say “I do.”

“The most emotional moment for us was reading our vows,” Ashlan said.

“The funniest moment, though, was the reaction of people finding out it was a wedding, along with the speeches from our loved ones.”

Kyle added the standout moment was feeling all the love from everyone there and getting to celebrate with them.

Although most guests told the couple they knew it was going to be a wedding,

the pair said the day was perfect and everything went to plan.

Ashlan was walked down the aisle by her father and stepfather, while two photos of her Nan and Nanna, who had both passed away, were delicately attached to her bouquet — walking her down the aisle too.

After the big “I do,” they jet-setted to New Zealand for their honeymoon, and today they are looking forward to starting a family.

“The whole day was truly one of the best days of our lives,” Ashlan and Kyle said.

“Be sure to do exactly what you want — don’t worry about what others want, it’s about you guys.

“Don’t stress about what can go wrong and just go with the flow.
