Apprentices on right path A group of more than 300 young Victorians who recently joined the workforce via a Victorian Government program are “setting up a lifetime of fulfilling work”, according to Employment Minister Jaala Pulford. “This is about young people learning new skills and gaining invaluable experience in the workplace — setting up a lifetime of fulfilling work,” she said. “Work means so much more than a weekly pay slip — it instils pride, satisfaction and ambition and it’s wonderful to watch these young men and women take their first steps on an incredible journey.” Launched last September, the Victorian Apprenticeship Recovery Package provides apprenticeship and trainee roles across the state, supporting people aged 15 to 24 into fully funded, 12-month opportunities. The young workers join government departments and agencies, and local councils. Young people were among the most heavily affected by pandemic-related job losses, and the program created an opportunity for unemployed people and school leavers to get started in paid work while continuing training. The roles are spread across regional and metropolitan areas including Victorian Government hubs in Ballarat and Geelong, at organisations such as VicRoads and Victoria Police, and in primary and secondary schools, health services and water authorities. The program is designed to ensure participants leave with experience and on-the-job training to help them secure future employment. The government worked in

Working for Victoria has helped more than 13,000 Victorians and is part of Jobs Victoria’s range of employment services helping get Victorians back to work.
Jobs Victoria is also working to remedy youth unemployment through a $250 million Jobs Victoria Fund, which is set to create thousands of new jobs across the state for priority job seekers.

KDHS is committed to supporting secondary school students to pursue a career in the health care industry by offering work experience placements for local secondary school students. We are able to offer work experience placement to any student undertaking Year 10 studies, and those completing VCAL and VET. KDHS offers the opportunity to experience various careers within the hospital setting, such as:
Lachlan TurpinSt Augustine’s College Year 11 VET/VCAL student Lachlan completed his work experience placement at KDHS as part of the Support Services team in the Kitchen. He chose KDHS as he wanted to experience what is was like to work in a busy kitchen and learn the skills he may need to further pursue this career choice. A highlight of his time at KDHS was assisting with the baking of cupcakes and sweet treats for the afternoon teas. Lachlan enjoyed working in the kitchen as the staff made him feel welcomed and he had fun with the team.

Meet some of the KDHS Team Gabriele JuddFinance Officer Gabby has worked at KDHS for 5 years. She started as part of the Client Services Team and jumped at the opportunity to become Finance Officer. Gabby undertakes many tasks from Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, to Aged Care Accounts. Although Gabby does not have any formal qualifications she has completed some courses in various accounting systems and has benefited from on the job training. She loves being able to contribute to working towards helping the local community.
Zac NorrisMaintenance Leading Hand Zac is an Electrician by trade and was always interested in this field because of the different avenues it could take you. He enjoys the variety of the daily tasks that he performs and believes that KDHS is welcoming and supportive. Zac likes to be able to make a positive contribution to the community and he likes the feeling of being a part of a team.
Raelene MaskellHome Care and Social Support Coordinator After 11 years as a perioperative nurse, Raelene was offered a new opportunity in Home Care and Social Support. She enjoyed the role so much, that 10 months on, she is now Coordinator of both areas. Raelene is enjoying taking on the challenge of growing both Home Care and Social Support. She is continuing learning and has great mentoring from her managers. Her nursing background provides a vital support for these roles and she plans on completing courses in the future to further develop her managing skills.
