Twenty-five years of customer service Konigs Shepparton has cemented itself as a leading dealer in agricultural machinery, with a large spare parts department and a fully-equipped service workshop. Catering for everyone — from the big or small farmer and contractors to hobby farmers and gardeners — over the past 25 years the business has made a name for itself in Shepparton. Owner Leo Schoonderbeek said Konigs Shepparton offered a large range of new and used tractors, sprayers, seeders, mowers, mulchers, cultivators, hay equipment, motorcycles, mules and ATVs in one of the largest agriculture showrooms in the country. “We stock quite a range of tractors, from the high-tech tractor right down to the small economy tractor, which covers everything from the hobby farmer to the farmer that makes his living off the land,” Leo said. “We import machinery ourself from Italy, Holland and Argentina.” Leo said the parts department carried a large stock of original and after-market spare parts for tractors, spraying, tillage,
mowing and seeding equipment. “We have anything from fuel transfer pumps, paint, to fly spray,” he said. “If we don’t have what you need in stock the spare parts team will do their best to get it for you.” The business also boasts a fullyequipped service centre specialising in service and repairs to all makes and model of tractors, machinery and motorcycles. “If you are unable to come to us, we will come to you in our service vehicle,” Leo said. “We also offer light engineering works to your equipment.” Leo said the business had a rich history of customer satisfaction, and his 10 staff members worked to the slogan hanging above the front door: ‘Driving your dollar further’. “Our philosophy is always trying to drive the dollar further,” he said.

farm,” Leo said. He said this became an issue for Greater Shepparton City Council. “We were in a predicament, we didn’t have any room and the council wanted to move our gear within 30 days from Doyles Rd,” he said. “We were lucky, in the right place at the right time to purchase a property that solved the issue.” Leo said the property, again on Benalla Rd, was originally just farming land. “The area is 3 ha of land which is a enormous block,” he said. “We kept the old house and I revamped it as a modern office. “We worked out of the house and we built a workshop first and then we started to build the showroom.” It took three years to complete the
project but it is now one of the biggest agricultural showrooms in the country. Only 12 months ago Konigs Shepparton expanded again, adding the Kawasaki motorcycle franchise to the business’ extensive range. “That was a real advancement for an agricultural business because being a full Kawasaki dealer that represents selling road bikes, fun bikes, motocross as well as the agriculture side of the industry,” he said. This prompted the business to apply for a license motor car trader for the first time in its long history, an experience Leo described as daunting. Today Konigs Shepparton employs 10 staff members, including Leo and Bev who remain actively involved in the business.

Not afraid to get his hands dirty He started his career as an apprentice mechanic at 16 and by the age of 35 owned one of Shepparton’s most successful agricultural machinery dealerships. Leo Schoonderbeek started out at David Brown Tractors in Cobram. After a four-year apprenticeship he joined the team at Furphy Implement Company in Shepparton, servicing John Deere and Chamberlain tractors and farming machinery. “In those years I enrolled in as many TAFE night courses as I could to obtain advanced knowledge of the mechanical trade such as advanced diesel, automatic transmissions, a three-year course in welding, airconditioning,” Leo said. “Eight to nine years later I started

my own repairs until I joined as equal partners with 12 others in a John Deere dealership at Moama, Deniliquin and Shepparton. “After three years this arrangement split and three equal partners took up in Shepparton which was known as Northern Ag — this continued for around three years.” After a short break from the industry, Leo purchased Konigs as a continuing business in 1992. “I was the age of 35 at that time and I just thought it was too good of an opportunity to not take up,” he said. “I totally believed that I could never go wrong with that decision.” He said he was lucky to continue the respected Konigs name and, despite owning the business, he started as a
mechanic while he was learning the ropes. “It was great to have that continuing support that was already there in the business by people who had a wealth of knowledge where I didn’t have that knowledge to that degree, and I picked it up as we went along in a short amount of time. “I don’t think anyone would have had a better opportunity to be able to blend into a business.” Now 60, Leo has been involved in the one industry for almost 44 years. “I have been very fortunate to be in this journey at the right place at the right time to make decisions to advance in a long outstanding business in tractors and farm machinery,” he said.

Beware of the guard dog Konigs Shepparton’s regular customers do not come into the store to see owner Leo Schoonderbeek, but to visit Ruby. The four-and-a-half-year-old might look cute and happily stop for a pat, but she is a securit y dog and wears her title proudly on her hat. “She’s a purebred cocker spaniel but on the miniature scale with a huge attitude,” Leo said.

Stepping back to move forward Twenty-five years in business is a huge achievement for Konigs Shepparton, but owner Leo Schoonderbeek is looking towards the future. There is much on the horizon for the Shepparton stalwart and Leo is determined to continue developing the business in its current location. He said plans were under way to create a shelter to protect products that would otherwise sit outside in the elements.
“In the tractor and farm machinery industry sometimes our products are not fast moving items,” Leo said. “Our equipment is quite expensive and our farming community expects more today and generally when they purchase farm machinery and tractors they put them in their sheds at home so it’s quite disappointing when they want to buy something brand new and it’s still out in the open. “My objective for the future is to try and house, if possible, our new and used equipment to prevent
deterioration from weather conditions.” Now in his 60s, Leo said succession planning was a large aspect of his 10year plan. “Within the past six months I have been taking a back step,” he said. “I have been progressively changing the roles that Paul Barlow and Rob Campbell are working towards, being the key overall controlling managers for the Konigs business. “My next huge achievement is to have the business run successfully without me being totally involved.”

You might not know his name but you will certainly recognise him.
Standing tall over the Konigs Shepparton front gate, ‘Ernie’ is a familiar face in town and owner Leo Schoonderbeek said he was one of the many unique parts of the business. “People may not know the word Konigs but if they want to know where we are they say look for the big man who flies the flag,” Leo said. “I think there are generations now in Shepparton that know Ernie from their younger days.” After winning the promotional figure for Ford New Holland in an auction, Leo said Ernie’s journey to Shepparton was quite a tale. “A truck arrives one day, a big semi-trailer with
three boxes,” he said. “They were quite huge boxes, we opened the biggest and that was Ernie’s head and then there were only two boxes left and I said ‘well something’s wrong here’. “We opened another box and it was one arm and then there was hardly anything left so we opened the third box and it was his other arm. There was no torso for Ernie. “I’m on the phone saying ‘fellas there’s something wrong, I only got two arms and a head’. The search was on to find Ernie. “Apparently what they had sent was Ernie’s spare parts. “They went and searched for Ernie and found that one of the dealers hadn’t returned him so they had to box the complete Ernie up and send him across.” Konigs Shepparton are experts in parts and Leo has made sure Ernie’s have not gone to waste — you can find his spare arms waving flags in the showroom.

Priding his staff on their honesty and credibility, owner Leo Schoonderbeek said Graeme Duncan and Chris Giankos offered vast product knowledge. team 18 months ago, Konigs Shepparton has added the full range of Kawasaki motorbikes to its offering. With 30 years’ experience in the motorbike game, he said introducing motorbikes was an asset to the business. “It makes it more of a one-stop-shop and increases the range of what we carry,” Graeme said.
“If we don’t have it we’ll get it as soon as possible.” Salesman Chris Giankos is the newest member of the Konigs Shepparton team. With a background in orchards he is
an expert in horticulture and broadacre farming, and knows everything there is to know about machinery from tractors to slashers and mulchers. No job too big or too small Making his start at Konigs Shepparton in the workshop, it is no surprise owner Leo Schoonderbeek believes quality service and repairs are an asset to the business. The fully equipped workshop can handle anything customers throw at it with two full-time staff members and two back-ups, including Leo himself. “It’s unique to be able to provide a servicing facility for motorcycles through to large
tractors,” Leo said. Workshop manager Jason Kapperer specialises in servicing and repairing motorcycles, ATVs and side-by-sides, while diesel mechanic Alex Thorn has been with the business for more than six years and is the expert when it comes to all things agriculture. Jason said they service what they sell — plus much more. “Anything off the farm can get done here and we do the whole range of motorcycles too,” he said.

The larger display area, which also includes motorcycle oils, has led to a marked increase in the sale of smaller four and five litre containers of oil,
Mr Hocking said. Customers include town dwellers, hobby farmers and large-scale commercial farmers. Last year Konigs Shepparton was chosen as the site for the two-day filming of a documentary, used for internal training of Castrol staff and external marketing campaigns. Mr Hocking said filming was undertaken in the workshop as well as on the farm of one of Konigs’ long-term customers.
