Dream becomes reality The year was 1978, Malcolm Fraser was Prime Minister and Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta topped the charts with You’re the One That I Want. Ken Muston had returned to Shepparton after 18 months in the United States; he had an idea and he had to start his own business to make it a reality. “We started Ken Muston Automotive with the view of providing the very best customer service that we possibly could,” Ken said. “You got that in just about every shop you went into in America. “I wanted to bring that feel into our business.” Today, Ken Muston Automotive is celebrating 40 years in business. For Ken its success is intrinsically linked with the values he brought home from the US — transparency, honesty, providing the best customer experience possible, staff development and innovation. “It’s a bit of a surprise, really,” he said. “One of the things over the years was learning to only work with people who were honest.
“I think it’s important to have an honesty focus — if a customer has a question, just tell them the truth and if we make a mistake, tell them we made a mistake.” The customer experience remains at the forefront of the business and Ken said there was nothing more satisfying than hearing customers rave about the service they received. From humble beginnings Ken Muston Automotive has continuously evolved. Ken made his start in a tiny shed at 36a Benalla Rd as a mechanical workshop for trucks and cars. “When we moved to Mitchell St we built quite a large workshop there and we had the biggest non-franchised workshop in Shepparton at the time,” he said. “We decided to move into car sales and that’s when we bought the Subaru dealership and we added a number of dealerships like Daihatsu, Saab and Volkswagen at one stage and Jeep, Hyundai then Mercedes-Benz.” The business made the move to its prime location in 1994 where it has continued to grow. “It was just an old shed where Subaru is now and we gutted that and put a new workshop on the back,” he said. “In 2004 we got the Mercedes-Benz

dealership so we bought the property next door and developed that site. “In 2006 we added the Chrysler Jeep showroom.” Ken Muston Automotive is always looking for opportunities, and a five-year plan saw the business unveil a state-ofthe-art service centre last year. For Ken the highlights of the past 40
years have been working with a fabulous team of people, a great business partner in Ian Raglus and with some of the best car franchises in the industry. “The wonderful people we have on staff — they are the sort of people that you’d invite over for dinner and that to me is part of the fun of coming to work, even though I’m supposed to be retired.”
From customer to dealer principal In 1989 Ian Raglus bought a trusty Subaru Brumby ute from Ken Muston Automotive; little did he know, this was the beginning of a long-lasting relationship.
Six years later Ian left the farm and began a career in car sales with the Shepparton business; 23 years on he has worked his way up the ladder and is now the dealer principal (DP). “I’ve pretty much worked though from sales through to sales manager and then through to general manger and then DP,” Ian said. A lot has changed since Ian made the move from customer to employee. “I can still remember having about five or six used cars out in the front yard, I remember our front yard and our driveway was gravel and when we had three sales guys,” he said.

Today Ken Muston Automotive boasts a bustling used car business, the yards have undergone much development and the sales team has doubled. For Ian the most rewarding part of the job is seeing customers and their growing families return when they are ready to buy their next vehicle. “Parents with children come in, look at the range and then years later return to buy from us as adults,” he said. “There is one family in particular that has probably bought 27 or 28 cars in the family.” He said becoming a Mercedes-Benz dealer was a huge career highlight. Ian said the business’ success was thanks to good old-fashioned customer service, and he took pride in the sales team’s experience and in-depth product knowledge. The team members are experts on the
extensive range of models across the four brands and Ian said that knowledge was crucial for ongoing support well after a customer had purchased their new wheels. “We look after our customers, we’re there if they have a problem,” he said. “Our team needs to be very good at helping the customer out, whether that’s just them coming back after a year with a question on Bluetooth or any part of the car they are not quite sure how to operate.” Forty years is a huge achievement and Ian said it was owner Ken Muston’s passion that had positioned the business as a Shepparton powerhouse for car sales and service. “For any businesses nowadays to reach 40 years and to continuously grow, it’s a great accomplishment,” he said.

Service keeps customers happy Ken Muston Automotive has built a reputation as a trusted car dealership. General sales manager Bruno Catanzariti said respected owners Ken Muston and Ian Raglus at the helm and a dedicated sales team were the keys to happy customers.
“When you look at making a vehicle purchase within this town you can’t get any better service,” Bruno said. While the car industry and how people go about buying vehicles has changed dramatically during the past 40 years, Bruno said the business moved with the times. “Most people visit two dealers these
days as opposed to the old days where they would visit everyone,” he said. “All their research is done online and when they come in they are asking about a particular brand.” Priding his team on product knowledge and customer service, Bruno said it was not their job to sell cars but to listen to the customer and understand their
needs. “Our people are experts at their jobs and they seek to understand and listen to the customer.”

Isuzu UTE Known as reliable workhorses, it is hard to go past the Isuzu range. Ken Muston Automotive dealer principal Ian Raglus said the brand specialised in versatile, value-for-money utes and SUVs. “We’ve very lucky to have a brand that has a great reputation for reliability,” Ian said. As well as the iconic three-litre turbo diesel engine that powers the entire lineup, Ian said the brand was renowned for its great towing capacity. “They’re a hard-core off-road vehicle and can take on some of the toughest challenges farmers throw at them, and down to the retirees and families heading off with the caravan or boats,” he said. Thinking about the environment For more than 20 years Ken Muston Automotive has been using its waste oil to heat its workshop, and the very same system has been installed in the new service centre.
Ken said.
Innovation is important to owner Ken Muston who said all waste oil was captured during the servicing process and stored until it was needed for heating in the winter.
“It’s just an efficient way of disposing of the oil and keeping the place really warm.”

A new chapter of service Five years ago owner Ken Muston had a lightbulb moment: the business would build a state-ofthe-art service centre. Customers have been enjoying the benefits of the new-look facility for more than a year. “The number one thing was that we have a reception like in a nice hotel for your car,” Ken said. “It was critical to look after the customers at the point of which they drop the car off. “The other thing was to ensure the guys out here had the best facilities they could possibly have.” With a company focus on honesty, large windows allow customers to see their vehicle being serviced from the reception area. “There are no secrets,” Ken said. “We tell them your car is being worked on right now and they can see that that’s what’s happening. “We would like to take it further than that and they could log on to a website and view their car being serviced, but we have to leave something for tomorrow.” The new infrastructure will allow the service division to grow for many years to come and Ken said they would continue to consolidate and build the team of technicians. “I have a dream to get to 90 car services a day,” he said. “We moved into here doing 30, we’re now doing 40 and I can see within the next month or so we could be up at 45 or 50.” Dealer principal Ian Raglus said the new workshop was the highlight of his 23 years with Ken Muston Automotive and had allowed the business to keep up with demand. “We had well and truly outgrown our old service centre which was still very, very good but it just couldn’t handle the volume of cars,” Ian said. “We couldn’t get enough people booked in.” With rear access from Enterprise Dve, Ian said it had also reduced congestion in the sales yard. “A lot of people will remember the congestion when we were trying to sell and service cars, now there is just so much more space.” The new infrastructure has the ‘wow’ factor and operations manager Vince Casuscelli said it benefited customers and staff. “The smiles on the staff members’
faces say it all and it’s passed on to the customer,” Vince said. “The technicians are loving the workplace and the conditions so the work that gets put out is excellent. “Everything is at their fingertips, there is no shortage of any tools necessary — we can do the job efficiently and a lot quicker.” In the previous facility, wait times were out to two weeks but Vince said that was beginning to change. “Now we’re within a week,” he said. “The aim is three to four days maximum and just in the last week we got an additional two technicians with another one coming, all factory trained in our brands. “I’d say within the next few weeks we should be there.” The new facility has also increased employment opportunities and now with a total of 14 technicians and accessory fitters, Vince said Ken Muston Automotive was making servicing more convenient. “We’re putting extra staff members on Saturday morning as well,” he said. “It’s more convenient for the customer now we are adapting to their working lifestyle.” With the increased space, the spare parts department is also starting to develop. “We’ve got more space in the spare parts department to stock more rather than the previous place; it was very tight, we had to watch our stock level,” Vince said.

Jeep From humble beginnings Jeep became an overnight success when the first WK Grand Cherokee hit the showroom. Ken Muston Automotive has been selling the cult brand since the early 2000s and dealer principal Ian Raglus said four-wheel drive fanatics had become repeat Jeep buyers. “It was great value and a fresh face in the
four-wheel drive market,” Ian said. While the brand went through a frustrating time after hitting its all-time high, Ian said it had regained momentum by offering a five-year warranty, five-year roadside assistance and capped servicing.
