The Sun Country on the Murray region is famous for its numerous stretches of pristine, sandy Murray River beaches. With over 100 beautiful inland beaches there’s a perfect spot for everyone. These unique beaches are lined with towering gum trees and grass picnic areas and are ideal for swimming, fishing, boating and camping. You can even bring your dog to most of the beaches to enjoy the river with you.

Life’s a beach on the Murray The areas around Tocumwal and Cobram Barooga feature some of the best beaches and are extremely popular with visitors year in year out. The river twists and turns around these beaches snaking its way through the thick Murray region’s state forests. There are numerous walking trails at many of the beaches weaving their way through the unique native bushland and wetlands. You will find access points to over 100 river beaches on both the NSW and Victorian side of the Murray River. Bush tracks (some are rougher than others) lead from the Murray Valley Highway, Goulburn Valley Highway and TocumwalBarooga-Mulwala Roads. Remember to check the current road and weather conditions, as some beaches may become inaccessible due to high water levels, or rain.

Here are some of the more popular beaches in the Central Murray region. Thompson’s Beach A few minutes’ drive from the centre of town, Thompson’s Beach is located in an idyllic setting and is a lovely spot to soak up the tranquillity of the Murray River and is close to Cobram and Barooga. The locals claim that Thompson’s Beach is the largest inland beach in the Southern Hemisphere and when you visit it you will see why. Shaded by the magnificent, towering river red gums and floodlit in the evenings, it is the perfect spot to relax or for a family gettogether. Enjoy a free electric BBQ’s, a playground area for children, swimming, walking, beach cricket, volleyball, canoeing and fishing. Spoil yourself and enjoy a close look of the river surrounds with a cruise on the unique Cobba Paddle Boat.

Dead River Beach Dead River Beach has an extended beach backed by a green grassed level bank shaded by stands of immature River Red Gums. It continues around into an old horseshoe bend, which the river now bypasses (the land to the west, on the new south bank of the Murray, is in NSW). Surrounded by River Red Gum flood plain forest prolific bird life and some cattle grazing. Dead River Beach is just to the north-west of town along a track off Racecourse Road. Non flush toilets are provided. There are picnic areas to the north at Big Tom’s and Little Tom’s Beaches (access via Wondah Street).

Scott’s Beach Just a few kilometres to the south-east of Cobram is Scott’s Beach, which has a large and popular camping and day visitor’s area. On the way to Scott’s Beach down River Rd, stop off at the Quinn Island wetlands, a nesting area for waterbirds that’s accessed by a footbridge.

Tocumwal Town Beach Tocumwal Town Beach is located within walking distance to Tocumwal. Town Beach is another large beach and is popular with families and visitors with recreational boats. There is a campground adjacent the beach with camping available to caravans, motorhomes and tents.

Big Toms Beach Big Toms Beach has an expansive 300m beach and plenty of flat, grassed areas. The low entry into the water here makes launching a rubber dingy or canoe really easy. The campground is an easy 15-¬20-minute walk into town. Access for Big Toms and neighbouring Little Toms Beach is via Wondah Street. Follow the track further west along the river to reach Dead End Beach campground.

Forges Beach No 1 and 2 Closer to Yarrawonga you will find the access to Forges No.1. This beach is one of the most popular sandy beaches on the Murray. Grassy banks make this an enjoyable place to visit. Forges Bend gets busy over summer and public holidays. At other times of the year you can have the entire beach to yourself. Forges No. 2 beach is popular with motorhome owners and those who fish. Two-wheel drive access is possible to Forges No. 1 beach. However, the access can become slippery after rain and has limited access during the wetter months. Forges No. 2 beach has good access most of the year but is closed regularly during periods of high water over winter. Non-flush toilets and shared picnic tables are provided at this basic bush campground.

You can enjoy access to many of the beautiful river beaches from the Victorian side of the Murray River. THE GREAT MURRAY RIVER GOLF COURSES

By Robert “Moose” Muir Wonderful golf courses exist throughout the width and breadth of our region. The Murray River provides a golfer’s paradise boasting perfectly manicured greens, sweeping fairways and elegant golf courses set within the delightful backdrop of Australia’s greatest river and picturesque bushland. In this edition of the Good Times, we feature some golf courses with specific holes which pose the biggest challenge to golfers.

Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort The 523 metre Par 5 hole on the Murray Course requires a solid drive and, with forest on both sides of the fairway and a water hazard on the right, a careful second shot, before an elevated green where the ball will run back towards you if you’re not well on, and there’s a deepish bunker in front on the right hand side in front of the wide green.

Corowa Golf Club

The Black Bull Golf Course’s sixth hole, a Par 4, is 390 metres long and the third hole in the Bull Ring’s trio of tough holes. The tee shot is played to a narrow landing with bunkers left and right of the fairway. The second shot is challenging, over a ridge to an elevated green which has two deep bunkers on the left. Reach the green’s centre as there is a swale at the green’s front.

The 17th hole Par 4, 376m hole dogleg left is the signature hole on the back nine with a tee shot starting through a tunnel of trees that guard the fairway. Drive to the centre or right-hand-side of the fairway or negotiate a 600-year-old Murray River Gum forming a narrow entrance to the green which has bunkers either side.

Howlong Golf Club The Par 5, 14th hole measuring 404 metres from the ladies tees is a genuine two-stage dogleg. Heavily wooded either side of the fairway, there are four greenside pot bunkers to negotiate. It is a lengthy journey with the emphasis on risk and reward once the green is in sight. Some tricky pin placements will also keep golfers testing their ability. Rated number one on the Ladies course index.

Tocumwal Golf Club The 18th hole, Par 5 is rated number one on the card and plays 378 metres off the blue tees for the men and it is rated number 7 for the ladies. It plays as a slight dogleg to the right from the tee, over the mound that runs across the fairway and then a mid iron to the green in front of the large club house.

From Tim Fischer’s statue in Boree Creek to the incredible Indigenous sculpture walk in Albury, there are plenty of interesting and iconic sculptures to enjoy during a drive through the Murray Riverina region. Created from rusting odds and ends, recycled wood, stone, steel and more, each artwork evokes an interesting story about the history of the towns and villages. There’s nothing quite like an outdoor experience that speak to the works of art, the town and the many people. Take a drive with family or friends along the Murray, into Rutherglen’s stunning wine country and out onto open farming fields north of Corowa to see these unique pieces.

Follow the art Your guide to must see sculptures Wagirra Trail from Kremur Street to Wonga Wetlands. Eleven sculptures created by local Aboriginal artists have been installed along the five kilometres of trail. Take a leisurely stroll or cycle the two-metre-wide shared pathway which meanders through the riverside parks (Noreuil, Australia, and Hovell Tree), past the Adventure Playspace at Oddies Creek, Albury Swim Centre, through Padman Park and west of Kremur Street (3.2km) to Wonga Wetlands. The last section of the trail, from Kremur Street to Wonga Wetlands is sealed. The Wagirra Trail also links to the Bungambrawatha Creek Trail, West Albury Trail, South Albury Trail and beyond to the Albury– Thurgoona Trail.

Walk in Albury which features a series of stunning contemporary Aboriginal sculptures lining the

40 minutes west of Albury is the townships of Corowa and Rutherglen. As you drive into the main street of Corowa, you’ll be greeted by a family of metal brolgas. The sculpture commemorates the construction of the Federation Bridge over the Murray River in 2005 and was unveiled on the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of the town of Corowa. Head on over to Rutherglen to see the Tommy McRae tribute by Arts Rutherglen. The sculpture, which overlooks the lake, is a replica of an 1890

Directly across the lake is a sign which features detailed information about the tribute as well as the life and impact of Tommy McRrae. Whether you walk, ride or go by car you can view more of amazing Arts Rutherglen sculptures and portals at various locations around Rutherglen including the ‘Red Boot’ in the main street, ‘The Mob’ at the Scion Wines vineyard, or the ‘Angler Fish’ at Gooramadda Olives.

As you drive into Urana from the south, you’ll be greeted by the ‘Not So Itsy Spider’; a menacing giant metal redback perched 16 metres up the side of the Urana Water Tower. The piece is made by legendary sculptor Andrew Whitehead. Towards the centre of town is the Stockman and his Mob right next to an iconic Annis and George Bills trough. The display features corrugated iron sheep, iron drovers, and a scrap metal horse- all part of a community art installation, where families around the area each paid $100 towards a sheep.

Outside the Urana Tennis Courts you’ll find another Andrew Whitehead sculpture, the Urana Goanna. The piece is inspired by the bark drawings of Yolngu artist, David Malangi, illustrated on the first Australian one dollar note (1966).

Lowesdale and Daysdale

Just 15 minutes north of Corowa, travelling along Federation Way, is Andrew Whitehead’s ‘Shearing the Rams’ sculpture outside the primary school in Lowesdale. This fascinating piece reflects the area’s proud connection to Tom Robert’s iconic painting. Whitehead invited the school kids to collect metal cogs and other pieces from their family farms to create this personal and universal tribute to Roberts.

Morundah and Boree Creek After Urana head over to Morundah to see the Toolbox and Jockey sculpture, commissioned to celebrate 100 years of bush racing. Made completely from scrap metal, this beautiful Andrew Whitehead sculpture was made in 14 different pieces that allowed for easier installation if indoor installation was required.

Another 15 minutes north is the small farming village of Daysdale. See the ‘Hardworking Horse’ sculpture situated in the picnic area across from the Exchange Hotel. Unveiled in 2021, the sculpture by Doug Munroe is made in honour of the late Len Hanrahan, a local farmer who lost his 40 year-long battle with cancer in 2020. Len’s motto, featured on the plaque, reads “Coming together as a community brings people together”. This sculpture, along with Jimmy Hewson’s ‘Man on the Pump’ in the same vicinity, give an artist’s impression of how Daysdale’s water used to be pumped in the late 19th century.

The Swagman and Rusty sculpture is another must see commissioned by the Boree Creek Town Improvement Committee to celebrate the 2010 Boree Creek Centenary. The theme of the Whitehead sculpture was chosen to remember the passing of the travelling ‘swaggy’, which was once a common sight 50 years ago on country roads.

At Boree Creek you will also find an incredible tribute to the late Tim Fischer (see page 29). Unveiled in 2021, the scrap metal sculpture was crafted by Andrew Whitehead, using references and keepsakes from Mr Fischer’s wife and family members to match his resemblance. GOOD TIMES SPRING 2026 • 23

paddling is a growing market and the Murray and high-country areas are quickly becoming a major paddle destination in Australia.”

So much so that Good Times Magazine decided to interview local well-known paddler Tim Roadley to feature some of his favourite paddling experiences.

Although there are many great paddling experiences in our region Tim summarises below his top 10 for the novice paddler.

Tim is a “mad” (his words) paddler, instructor and coach that has been paddling on the Murray River and other local waterways for over 20 years. After moving to the area Tim fell in love with the river and local waterways and getting out in his canoe was the best way of experiencing them. Over time he has not only found some awesome paddling experiences but has been instrumental in encouraging other people of all ages to enjoy the unique experiences of paddling in the region. “As a competitor, coach and instructor of the Yarrawonga Mulwala Amateur Canoe Club I have been able to experience many locations which also has had me involved in setting up several events and paddling tours in the area,” Tim said. “The best way to experience our waterways in this region is without doubt in a canoe. “With a canoe you can access many waterways and hidden attractions which are just not accessible by motorised craft and impossible to get to by road,” Tim explains. “With the emergence of better touring kayaks, sit on tops and paddle boarding along with fishing kayaks

Paddle the Murray – Yarrawonga downstream from the weir The Murray River has some of the best canoeing and kayaking experiences in the world. Where else can you enjoy the serenity as you silently glide down the river where, you will encounter incredible wildlife including kangaroos, koalas, turtles, and an array of bird life, not to mention the great fishing and amazing inland beaches. At 2508km the Murray River is Australia’s longest river, often referred to as the Mighty Murray as it is an important source of water for over 1.5 million households for their domestic use and farmers for the purpose of irrigation for stock and plant growth. The Yarrawonga weir diverts water via two major channels with the Mulwala Canal the largest irrigation canal in the southern hemisphere. From the weir the water flows majestically downstream and pushes you along. Just 7km down you will pass Rich Glen Olive Grove, but as you keep going you swirl around countless river beaches on both sides of the river which get bigger and better as you pass Cobram and get closer to Tocumwal.

This newest silo artwork showcases a Wedge Tailed Eagle and indigenous figures camped along the Boosey Creek with a Scar Tree down the centre. The design also features local plants and rare wildflowers. The top right silo showcases the first passenger train engine that serviced Katamatite in its early settlement days. The bottom of both silos features a depiction of horses pulling a scoop to create irrigation channels, which played a crucial role in opening up the region to farming.

Here are several lookouts in the region we suggest exploring but do some research into the viewpoints in our greater region before your next day trip adventure. • Powers Lookout Three kilometres off the beaten track from the Mansfield – Whitfield Road in the King Valley, you will find yourself overlooking the beautiful King Valley. • Paradise Falls This stunning lookout is nestled deep in the King Valley, located in the Alpine National Park. • The Gorge and Mount Buffalo Chalet The Gorge is the place to visit for stunning views at Mount Buffalo and the Ovens Valley. • The Horn Located at the highest point in the Mount Buffalo National Park (1723m) and with the beautiful mountains of the Great Dividing Range stretching into the distance, the Horn is the perfect place to enjoy a sunset or sunrise. • Kurrajong Gap Lookout – Lake Hume Bethanga Kurrajong Gap Lookout is a 25-minute drive from Albury and 29 minutes from Wodonga and is located between Bellbridge and Bethanga along the Kurrajong Gap Road. • Morgan’s Lookout Morgan’s Lookout on the Culcairn to Walbundrie Road is a beautiful white granite outcrop which was used as a vantage point for bushrangers in the 19th century.
