Deniliquin is a great place to live and has some great history in its museums, buildings, monuments and general locations. The community of Deniliquin grew because it was near a crossing place of the Edward River.

You’ll also learn about the airport, cemetery, Lawsons Syphon and so much more.

The traditional name of the river is Kolety, but it was renamed the Edward River in 1840 after overlanders were travelling to Adelaide with some cattle.

Here’s just some of the landmarks you can explore:

Origins of the name Deniliquin are not so easily identifiable but are believed to come from altered local Aboriginal leader Denilikoon.

More than 450 people in the region served in World War I. The Cenotaph at the corner of Cressy and Napier Sts in the heart of the Deniliquin CBD was unveiled in 1922 by Deniliquin’s Mayor A H Windeyer.

Deniliquin was officially established in 1846 and gazetted as a municipality in 1868. You can take in many of the town’s historic landmarks on foot, by taking the Deniliquin Historical Town Walk. The others are just a short drive from the centre of town. The Historic Town Walk usually starts at the Peppin Heritage Centre and takes you through 43 historically significant locations. While upgrades are being undertaken at the centre – a former school which is now home to a museum, gallery space and the tourist information centre – you might like to start your walk at the temporary visitor information centre in End St, Deniliquin. Collect your historic walk guide, or use the digital version, which points out some of the original Deniliquin buildings such as the Dublin Hotel, which was built in 1878, or the Federal Hotel which licence dates back to 1876.

War memorials -

The base stone was set by Governor General Lord Forster. The front panel was set aside for people who lost their lives at war. In 1964, 529 soldiers who fought in WWII were unveiled by Mayor J Stewart. Those who served in Korea and Vietnam followed and then, in 1992, a plaque was added to commemorate women in the armed forces for their contributions in WWII. Last year, the honour rolls were updated to include even more veterans with links to Deniliquin, and those involved in more modern conflicts. Located nearby, a little further into the Waring Gardens, is a dedicated Vietnam War Memorial, of an Australian Vietnamese Soldier. To page 5… What’s On Winter 2022 3

From page 3… Unveiled in 2014, it was made from carved Vietnamese marble. It is visible from underneath the archways of the Cenotaph. At the other end of the block, on the Cressy and Edwardes Sts roundabout, is the Boer War Memorial. Erected in 1902, it was originally referred to as the Mason Memorial Lamp in honour of Trooper James Mason, who was killed in action at Elandsberg, South Africa in 1901. The names of 30 other volunteers are also listed. For those who want to explore our war history a little further, the Deniliquin Airport, Deniliquin War Cemetery and the Deniliquin & District Historical Society are well worth a visit. The airport was home to the Royal Australian Airforce’s No. 7 Service Flying Training School in

World War II. Learn more from the interpretive panels and displays in the airport terminal, and stop to check out the new memorial unveiled at the airport on Anzac Day this year.

Multi Arts Centre and the Three Muses – The Multi Arts Centre is the former St Paul’s Anglican Church, built in 1866 and deconsecrated in 1977. It was purchased, along with the adjoining Sunday School Hall, by the former Deniliquin Council with a Heritage Commission Grant.

They were made in Italy from the best Sicilian marble and originally were a feature of the old School of Arts building, before it closed in 1943 and became the regional library. They were relocated to the Deniliquin Waring Gardens in 1950, and then relocated in the gardens in 1997 after a 12 month restoration.

From page 5… The building was completed a year later, opened in November 1976 by Governor Sir Hercules Robinson. The clocks in the tower, which has been refurbished as part of the upgrades, were donated by Captain George Landale in 1904. The large hall with central glass segmented dome ceiling was added on in 1928.

Memorial Park, the water tower and chimney stack – Memorial Park was developed in 1945 as a memorial to those who served in World War II. The Deniliquin Show has called it home since 1953, and other user groups include the Deniliquin Rovers Football Netball Club, Deniliquin Netball Association and Deniliquin Rhinos Cricket Club.

Steven’s Weir is 24km west of Deniliquin and was built in 1938 to guarantee town water supplies. There is a pretty picnic spot overlooking the river, and the fish ladder which allows native fish to move freely through the system.

Deni Ute Muster gates – No visit to Deniliquin is complete without getting a photo at the iconic Deni Ute Muster site gates.

As you make your way into Memorial Park, you will come across the entry for the Deniliquin Island Sanctuary and the historic water tower and chimney stack.

The entry was created by Benjamin Gilbert in 2008, and has become as iconic at the Ute on the Pole in the centre of Deniliquin, in Charlotte St.

The foundation stone of the water tower was laid in 1882 by Mayor JG Evans.

But this is no longer just a photo stop. Muster HQ and the Deni Ute Muster Museum are now located on site too.

When electric pumps replaced the steam engines driving the pumps in 1930, the original brick housing and engines were demolished. The stack is the only lasting reminder of this building.

The Deni Ute Muster in held on the NSW Labour Day weekend, which this year is Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1.

The organisation is based at 104 End St, where you can enjoy a museum and gallery space.

If you continue through Memorial Park, you’ll come to the entrance of the Deniliquin Regional Park, where you will find Willoughby’s Beach.

Visitors to the Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre can access and learn about the Indigenous heritage of the Wamba Wamba and Perrepa Perrepa People.

Water infrastructure –

A base for community events, the arts and private functions, the current upgrades have restored many of the original features. An exciting new addition is the glass atrium, which will overlook a public courtyard.

Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre – Yarkuwa is a Traditional Owner organisation based in Deniliquin. It was formed in 2003 to ensure traditional owner knowledge was preserved in future generations.

The syphons divert the Mulwala Canal under the Edward River and Aljoes Creek.

The gallery space is regularly updated with new exhibitions of visiting and local art projects. Yarkuwa also sells traditional Aboriginal-based items, foods, clothing and local Indigenous artwork.

Deni’s Famous Festival’s

MUSEUM

The spirit of the Deni Ute Muster can now be celebrated year-round. The Deni Ute Muster museum extends on the iconic event, with a place to visit and learn all about the town’s famous festival. The Deni Ute Muster is a two-day festival held each year that celebrates country music and rural life. It features performances from world class artists, previously hosting stars such as Keith Urban, Alan Jackson, Carrie Underwood and Cold Chisel. The event is famous, of course, for mustering up world record numbers of utes to the town, as well as iconic activities of rural life such as whip cracking, bull riding and driving competitions. Situated at the main entrance of the festival grounds, the tourist attraction which was officially opened in March last year gives visitors a taste of what the muster is all about. The museum tells the story of the Deni Ute Muster from its beginnings in 1999, when a small group of locals gathered to try and develop and event that could ‘put Deniliquin on the map’. They have succeeded in spades. The museum covers move than two decades to the present day, paying tribute to the ute, of course, and all history behind the festival and its attractions. At the musuem, visitors can check out an amazing collection of memorabilia. A library has been created containing magazines and newspapers which featured the muster, books about the Deni Ute Muster, and even books on the artists who have performed at the event.

Items on display include the contents of a history box for each year of the event, including stickers, articles, tickets, wrist bands and merchandise. Honour boards listing competition winners have also been produced, and there’s also interactive touch screens where you can go through photos from each year of the muster. The retail space means locals and visitors can pick up some great souvenirs. Goodies include shirts, hats, vests, drink bottles and stubby holders, as well as the classic blue singlets worn at the event. The centrepiece of the current exhibition is a 1979 HZWB Bitza designed and built by ‘Ferrel Kev’, and now retired to the exhibition. There are also two Isuzu Wasp utes which date back to the early 1960s, and a fully operational 30ft Comet windmill, which acts as tourism attraction giving a great photo in golden hour and educational tool. You can also grab a snap of the famous entrance gates while you’re there. Chat to the staff to learn all about the famous festival. The museum is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Weekends are by appointment, by calling (03) 5881 3388. The first 100 people to enter the museum between Monday, July 4 and Friday, July 29 will receive a free Stubby Holder.

LOCAL HISTORY The Deniliquin and District Historical Society Museum displays some of their oldest treasures, in the freshest ways. The society intricately explores the rich and complex history of Deniliquin, with an original and authentic flair that will help even the most reluctant of tourists feel at home. When you drop in to the Macauley St museum, you never know what to expect. You may even catch an eyeful of some old bloomers. Yes, on purpose. The ladies of the historical society have been known to dress up in historical clothing to welcome tourists. “Doris (a historical society member) started dressing up because she had some old fashioned bloomers, that belonged to her grandmother,” secretary Meg Christian said. “The people on the tours always get a good laugh out of it. “Jan (another member) struggles to find old clothes she can use for that purpose— I think one of the photos we took of her, the cap she had on was a shower cap really, because she couldn’t find a genuine cap!” Ms Christian said the costumes don’t always make an appearance, but members always welcome their guests with genuine enthusiasm and an open mind. Often if you visit, you will be invited to sit down and enjoy a cup of tea with society members, many of whom lived through the

events on display throughout the museum. “We have a core group of volunteers that are always there,” Ms Christian said. “It’s the friendliness of the volunteers that makes people come back. “When visitors come in, they are always welcomed, they are shown around, and if they have any particular interests, we point them out to what’s specific to them. “Most of our members are elderly, and some of them have lived in Deniliquin all their lives. “So they have a lot of history just in their heads - if you’re interested to sit down and have a chat. Visitors are always invited to sit down with us for our cup of tea about 11am.” The museum has an enormous and well cared for collection, with a large variation in scope. With such a large amount of information on everything ‘Deni’, there is something for everybody — from history buffs to farming enthusiasts. “Some people are into trains, or planes, and we have a lot of photos. We’ve also restored the original railway station awning. “We often find photos to do with whatever they’re interested in.

“They might be interested in having a look at what we have from the old police station, including a door from the old jail on display. “We have a lot of old shearing memorabilia, a lot of clippers, and all sorts of old tools and equipment. “Many come here for family history, looking for information for a relative from the past. “The thing that impresses people is the scope of what we have here. “There are so many different rooms with different things, and we just have so many things on display — we cover the social history of Deniliquin and beyond.” The building alone is something to behold. The open faced museum is tasteful and an insight into riverside elegance. With a rose studded garden crawling beside the footpath, the site is classically beautiful. After exploring the museum, Deniliquin’s eateries and cafés are a perfect treat. The Deniliquin and District Historical Society Museum is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am to noon. Even in the dead of winter, there’s something for everyone in the great outdoors of the Southern Riverina. From the eternal outback scenery of Hay, to the bushland greenery of the Murrumbidgee Valley National Park, the Southern Riverina offers true Australian camping at its most diverse. For novice campers, and those who want a comfortable, quiet stay, there are many established camping grounds that offer the perfect mixture of comfort and the raw outdoors. Willoughby’s Beach Campground in Deniliquin offers a rich opportunity to immerse yourself in the outdoors, without giving up access to amenities in the regional town’s CBD. It’s the perfect holiday spot for young families, and first timers, with access to the stunning Beach to Beach walk, a breezy stroll that takes you along the Edward River to sandy McLean Beach. Keen fishers will find prosperous spots studded along the river’s banks, with breakfast only a cast line away.

Hay, to Deniliquin’s north, has the unmissable Wooloondool Campground. Huge red gums crowd the river lines, and fishing spots galore surround the site. But you can still access the lively town of Hay without strain. Deeper south, Tocumwal offers natural beauty with a modern edge. The emerging tourist town is well known for koala sightings and novel innovation, as well as gorgeous camping spots. The Tocumwal Town Beach camping ground gives campers access to the Murray River, the huge Murray cod below its surface, and plentiful wildlife, but is

Closer to the iconic Murrumbidgee River, Bunyip Hole Campground is just 10 minutes from the scenic town of Darlington Point. With sandy beaches and welcoming access to the river, it’s the perfect place to both expend energy and relax. Bunyip Hole Campground is within the Murrumbidgee Valley National Park where wildlife is a constant, with emus, kangaroos and ring tail possums sharing the area. For keen anglers, this spot is a must. There are plentiful ripe spots beyond the saltbush. Mathoura Public School will have a lasting reminder of its 2022 Recognition Week celebrations for many years to come. As part of the school’s new art works, a mural featuring the totem of the local Yorta Yorta Aboriginal people a Badja Bayaderra, or long neck turtle has been painted on the library. A mural of an Azure Kingfisher has also been added to the school grounds as part of the project. The murals have not only brightened up the school, but have given students a greater insight into the local Aboriginal community.

The award winning Moama Lights is gearing up to light up the bush this July and August. The theme for 2022 will be ‘Connections’, which is timely given the last two years spent separated by border restrictions.

The council has invested heavily in new infrastructure at Horseshoe Lagoon in time for the event, including new footbridges which will extend the lights trail by more than 400m, to more than 1km.

Ms Mackenzie celebrated the storytelling of First Nations people during last year’s Moama Lights, and said that people were really wanting to hear more of the beautifully told stories.

Echuca Moama Tourism chief executive Kathryn Mackenzie said council’s investment will allow the event to host more people keen to enjoy the storytelling of the region.

“It has a community feel — it told our colonial story and our Indigenous story,” she said.

Aus Darts Comp in Moama The 2022 Australian Darts Open set to be held at Moama Bowling Club has received a major boost, announced as a platinum-rated event on the World Darts Federation calendar. World Darts Federation (WDF), Darts Australia and Murray River Council jointly announced the ranking promotion — the WDF’s highest — as well as increased prize money for the prestigious event, now up to $80,000. Returning for the first time since the successful 2019 tournament, the open is another international level sporting event to hit the region, and Murray River Council Mayor Chris Bilkey said the region was excited to have it back. “We were privileged to host the best darts players from around Australia, Europe and Japan in 2019, so we are looking forward to welcoming them back again this year,” Cr Bilkey said.

RIVER COUNTRY The Murray River Council region lays claim to three of NSW’s best rated tourism towns, as chosen by the tourists themselves. Moulamein, Barham and Moama were all finalists in the 2022 NSW Top Tourism Town Awards, which selects winners in the Tiny Town, Small Town and Top Town categories based on population. And while Moama was the only town to get a gong at the May awards night – for best tourism video – the three towns being nominated means the public and the industry see something worth exploring in River Country. Here’s why.

MOULAMEIN Moulamein is a ‘tiny’ town on the Edward River that makes time feel slower. With a population of about 300 people, you can be assured a genuine rural experience. It’s the ideal location for a nice getaway. You must check out Moulamein’s Art Gallery, open on Thursdays and Fridays or by appointment. Walk the trails along the river, get something to eat or drink from local cafes and make sure you stay the night at a caravan park or utilise the free riverside camping spots. With the Billabong Creek and the Edward River in the centre of town, it makes a great fishing location. Moulamein Lake is also a beauty, perfect for swimming, fishing, kayaking and even some actionpacked water sports.

BARHAM Barham is a ‘small’ town on the Murray River. It is a place to relax by spending time on the riverbanks, or the golf courses, with the local fauna and flora. Enjoy the peaceful natural surrounds and enjoy the local produce at the weekend farmers’ markets. Barham is surrounded by national parks and state forests to be observed upon by walkers and cyclists on trails. If you’re staying overnight, there are campgrounds, caravan parks and other accommodation options

available. When staying in the region, be sure to take a wetland cruise, fish, bushwalk and canoe. A gentle wander beside the riverbank will guide you past statues made from red gum portraying Barham’s pioneers and wildlife. Once you have finished, check out the restored machinery at the Border Flywheelers Club. You cannot forget to go to Barham’s Federation Botanical Reserve 1.3km from town centre. It is a 10-hectare reserve to enjoy the native 125+ species of plant and range of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. There have been more than 130 bird species counted from bird watchers. Barham is a beautiful location to be explored at the pace you want by walking, bicycle or car.

MOAMA The bordering towns of Moama (NSW) and Echuca (Victoria) are separated by the mighty Murray River, and is only a 2.5 hour drive from Melbourne. The twin towns are popular for their history and contrasting modernism, which makes it a suitable spot to visit for people of all ages. To truly experience Echuca-Moama, you must visit Port of Echuca Discovery Centre, Echuca’s wharf, and take a trip on a paddle steamer. The towns are known as paddle steamer capital and house the largest number of paddle steamers, and world’s oldest operating wooden-hull paddle steamer. Once you have looked at the port, pop over to see the historic Moama Court House and stop for a bite in one of the town’s many cafes and dining spots. Relax while you take a sip of wine and look out onto the natural landscape. If you are looking for natural landscape, Moama has tracks for you to walk and bike that twist along the Murray River. Do not forget to go to one of the local farmers’ markets to find homemade goods and seasonal produce. Fun for kids at Pioneer Museum

TAKE THE KIDS TO THE HISTORIC JINDERA pioneer museum these school holidays. Jindera is a town in the south-western Riverina, just 15km north of Albury. The first German settlers arrived in the Jindera area in 1867, having trekked from Adelaide in horse-drawn wagons. Before they arrived, probably in the 1840s, a small wattle and daub hut was built just off the main track through town. This hut still stands at the site of the Jindera Pioneer Museum, and probably is the oldest remaining cottage or house in the Albury District. In 1874 Johann Rosler and Peter Wagner built a store and a three room residence on this same site. It became known as Wagner’s Store. Formed in 1967, the Jindera Pioneer Museum and Historical Society purchased the evolved Wagner’s Store, the residence, and the grounds around the wattle and daub hut. The Pioneer Museum, one of the best known in NSW, recreates the material culture of the early German settlers, using only local relics. The complex consists of several historic buildings centred around the store, set within a sprawling, beautiful two acres of grounds that now feature not only the wattle and daub cottage, but an authentically furnished slab hut, a remarkable and extensive collection of farm implements, equipment and forge, an historic post office, a gallery and several other outhouses and structures. The Wagner’s Store and Residence was restored and painstakingly furnished so as to recreate its 19th-century appearance. The shop building is preeminent in NSW for its original shop fittings and

furnishings, and is stocked with authentic goods of the 19th century. The living area at the rear is also furnished in its original style. Within this amazing 16 room complex is another beautiful display gallery.

The Museum plays host to many thousands of visitors throughout the year. It is also a Visitor Information Centre, providing regional maps and information regarding local places of interest.

There are a number of activities that can engage children while they visit the museum. Your Life in 1894 gets them to think about what it would have been like for a child to live during this time. There is also a colouring book, word search puzzles and oldfashioned cut-out paper Dolls to colour in and dress. There are also outside games that they can try that would have been played during that era.

You may also wish to take in the Jindera Heritage Walk around the 24 historic sites – stroll, read and imagine what was happening in Jindera over 100 years ago!

The Museum Treasure Hunt is a way for the curious to sleuth their way around the museum. A keen eye and an exploring nature are needed to find the objects hidden throughout the expanse of the museum. Clues are available if you need them but look high and look low and look behind the objects in the picture for clues. A prize awaits the completed hunt.

There is a very large outdoor garden and lawn space for children to enjoy and shady trees for picnics. Excitement and exploration is encouraged, it is a museum to engage with, not a hands off experience. The famous tea room was built in the 1800s and was the original store. BERRIGAN SHIRE Incorporating the communities of Berrigan, Cobram-Barooga, Finley and Tocumwal, Berrigan Shire is a much-loved destination for admirers of the great outdoors and good old fashioned hospitality. The Finley and District Historic Museum and Log Cabin is also worth a visit. Step back in time by walking through the McAllister Homestead, then on to the museum and enjoy its marvellous collection of machinery and memorabilia.

It is also the perfect spot for hikers to head out to explore Quinn Island.

Turn off the Newell Highway and discover a town nestled around the river bends and steeped in unique World War II history.

The Berrigan Government Nature Reserve Tank Paddock is a local initiative that has created an enjoyable walking track through a regenerated indigenous landscape.

Finley is a vibrant small community with great shopping, eateries, entertainment and historic attractions, but it is the Finley Lake which really draws people in.

It is a very peaceful spot for a stroll and is close to the caravan park and swimming pool.

The first practical suggestion for a town lake was put to a public meeting in March 1964. It took a further 10 years of planning, fundraising and overcoming the difficulties for the project to begin, and Finley Lake was officially opened on November 6, 1975.

In early spring the farmland around Berrigan turns vibrant yellow as the canola bursts into flower and promises of the bountiful season to come. It is worth a drive on the backroads at this time of year.

Cobram-Barooga Cobram-Barooga is situated in the heart of Victoria’s ‘Food Bowl’, and is home to some of the most picturesque sections of the mighty Murray River. Visitors are captivated by the lifestyle, with wide sandy beaches, towering gums and native bushland which blend together to create this unique holiday destination.

Since then it has provided a welcome oasis for the weary traveller as well as being a venue for many and varied pursuits from fishing to bird watching, from sailing and canoeing to power boating and water skiing. While in Finley, make sure to stop by the Finley Railway Museum in Endeavour St, to learn more about how it was the first town selected for a pioneer railway. The rail was eventually extended to the town in 1898.

Tocumwal wears its heritage for all to see with its character filled main street and historic building facades that take you back in time. An ideal spot from which to explore the region, enjoy exceptional food and wine, get a rush from water sports and flying adventures, relax while bushwalking and camping or visit museums on your hunt for antiques and collectables. While here, make sure to check out the WAAAF Creek Walk. The enjoyable creek sidewalk is lined with interpretive signage that honours and celebrates the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force story, and its role in Tocumwal during WW II. In Tocumwal there is also the recently opened Tocumwal Aviation Museum and adjoining café, where you can learn about the town’s World War II history while also enjoying a coffee or a meal.

Jerilderie Check out Jerilderie’s newest attraction - the mural on the external wall at Jerilderie Swimming Pool, which faces the Newell Highway (Jerilderie Street). Heritage walks, a tree-lined streetscape, and the cleanest toilets in NSW await visitors to the historic township of Jerilderie. Established in 1859, the town is nestled on the banks of Australia’s, and reputedly the world’s, longest creek. Billabong Creek winds its way through Jerilderie and 321 kms of quintessentially Australian landscape. Jerilderie is known in history as the childhood home of Australia’s greatest military strategist, Sir John Monash. FINLEY

This trail starts at Jerilderie and officially ends at the near-desolate town of Barringun on the NSW/QLD border. After leaving Jerilderie (a keystone in the Ned Kelly story), the Kidman Way heads north through the productive farming town of Coleambally, past the largest solar farm in Australia and onto Darlington Point on the Murrumbidgee River; learn about the history of the punt and bridge.

Long Paddock Touring Route The Long Paddock is a unique touring route, which follows the 610 kilometres of the Cobb Highway (named after the famous coach company) from Echuca/Moama on the Victorian border, through the towns of Deniliquin, Hay and Wilcannia, leading to the outback towns of Bourke, Broken Hill and White Cliffs. Interpretive panels are located at significant sites along the Cobb Highway.

Long Paddock Sculpture Drive Trail The Long Paddock boasts 11 major public artworks along the route, reflecting the heart and soul of our small rural communities. The route also showcases a series of timber sculptures, designed to pay tribute to the significant economic and social contribution of the timber industry to the region.

The Backroads Trail Take a detour off the beaten track and discover the wonder of the Backroads Trail. Meet the locals, taste the home-grown produce, sample the boutique wines and explore our rich cultural, artistic and social heritage. The trail also highlights the close ties farmers have with their land and the innovative ways in which they are working to ensure its sustainability for future generations. The Backroads Trail is located in the rural area north of the Murray River between Barham, Moama, Mathoura and Deniliquin. It’s simple to navigate and offers a true farm gate experience!
