The Lockington community will gather on Wednesday, December 18 to celebrate the festive season with an open-air Christmas Makers’ Market and twilight carols. Following the success of a similar event in 2024, the market will run from 5pm to 7.30pm at Lions Park. Lockington Neighbourhood House is co-ordinating the event, which will feature handmade
items suitable for gifting, fresh produce and flowers. Food options include The Port Ice Creamery, Dutch pancakes and a barbecue supporting the Lions Club of Lockington. Lockington Community Church pastor Bill Cochrane said the evening combined shopping with community celebration. “The Lockington Community market is on from 5pm, followed by the Lockington Christmas carols at 7.30pm,” he said.
At the market’s conclusion, a twilight community carols program will begin under the auspices of the Combined Churches of Lockington. “ We sing t ra d i t i o n a l Christmas carols,” Pastor Cochrane said. “There will be things for the kids to do, plenty for the kids to do.” This year’s program includes a special presentation. “Father Calder from the Catholic Church will give a 10-minute
presentation of what Christmas is, the meaning of Christmas,” Pastor Cochrane said. Local lad Alex Hunter will lead the carols portion of the evening. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs or picnic blankets. “It is a free family event, you can come along, buy tea at the market and make a real family night of it,” Pastor Cochrane said. ‘’Christmas is an opportunity for us to gather as a community
and reflect on what Christmas actually means.” Additional festive activities in the Lockington area include the Tennyson Recreation Reserve Christmas Tree on Friday, December 13 from 6.30pm, and the Kotta Hall Christmas Tree on Friday, December 19 from 6.30pm. Lockington FoodShare will host a free two-course community dinner on Christmas night, December 25 from 6.30pm at Lockington Recreation Reserve.
Hamper drive spreads Christmas joy By Jaci Hicken Echuca Moama Community Projects’ hamper drive is underway with The Riv to bring Christmas joy and companionship to those spending Christmas Day alone. Together, we’re creating 100 special hampers for guests joining the Echuca Moama Uniting Church Christmas Day lunch. Over the past week, Echuca Moama Community Projects and The Riv have been overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone who contributed jam, Christmas puddings and tinned fruit. There’s still plenty of time for you to get involved, with The Riv office welcoming donations throughout Riv editor Nikala Dixon and Julie Langdon adding chocolates and Christmas treats to the Echuca Moama Christmas hamper drive.

No silent night at Rochester By Jaci Hicken The Rochester community will gather for Christmas carols at the junior football club rooms on Reserve St on December 21, starting at 5.30pm. Everyone should take note of the new location for 2025. Salvation Army officer Greg Turnball said the event would feature live music, a sausage sizzle and refreshments. Darren Sterling, another Salvation Army member, will lead the
traditional carols. He also mentioned the evening would include the animal nursery from Billabong Ranch. Mr Turnball emphasised the spiritual significance of the gathering. “Christmas is important, putting Christ back into Christmas, getting people together,” he said. “To get the Christmas message across that the greatest gift at Christmas time is Jesus.” He noted Rochester’s need for such community events.
“Rochester doesn’t have anything being held in terms of Christmas carols and I think there needs to be something,” Mr Turnball said. The Salvation Army aims to continue this tradition in future years, with Mr Turnball noting this is his first year organising the event at Rochester as it his first year with the Salvation Army in the area. Previous members of the Salvation Army had organised Christmas carols at the Rochester silos in past years.

Bellas choir bands together to vocalise By Jaci Hicken The Echuca Bellas choir will join forces with Echuca Federal Band for Christmas street performances this month. The collaborative performances will take place at the pedestrian crossing in Hare St on Saturday, December 13, at 11.30am, and Saturday, December 20, at 10.30am. “It has always been the Echuca Federal Band playing in Hare St, Echuca; it has been a yearly tradition,” Echuca Bellas’ musical director Marion Haywood said. “But a couple of years ago, Bellas, we agreed to join in so that we could both enjoy singing and playing music at the same time. “We will be performing

The Echuca Bellas community choir has evolved from its a’capella roots to embrace a more inclusive approach to singing. Ms Haywood explained the transformation of the group formerly known as Bella A’Capella. “We were Bella A’Capella, but it is a community choir, so it is better to have some accompaniment, and it was easier to learn songs,” she said. “So we have moved away from a’capella and we now
have accompaniment backing tracks. “It is so much easier for people who want to come in and just sing along. “We are trying to sing songs people know, make the choir more inclusive.” The Echuca Bellas, a community choir for women that has operated for about 30 years, currently has about 25 members. The group meets every Monday at 7pm at the Echuca Federal Band Rooms, 430 High St, Echuca. No auditions are required and all abilities are welcome. Echuca Federal Band, celebrating more than 150 years of history, rehearses on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm at the same venue and welcomes new members regardless of age or playing level.

Indulge in a sweet treat Jaci Hicken, our seasoned journalist and trained chef, has been busy in the kitchen preparing a raspberry Chocolate parfait that you can cook and freeze ahead of Christmas Day, for those who don’t like (or want) Christmas plum pudding for dessert. Christmas plum pudding has never been a favourite of mine, finding it too rich for me. This recipe for raspberry chocolate parfait is a slightly decadent alternative. You don’t have to use raspberries, flake chocolate bars and pistachio nuts as I have; you can use any combination of fruit, chocolate or nuts you like. There are a couple of things to look out for in this recipe. You will have to use a stainless steel mixing bowl or pouring the sugar syrup over the egg yolks (step 3) will be a disaster. You can use a 5cm x 20 cm loaf tin, which you can find in the supermarket. Lining the loaf tin with plastic wrap makes it easier to remove your parfait once it has frozen.
Raspberry chocolate parfait Ingredients 600 ml of whipping cream 125 grams of sugar 185 grams of water 4 egg yolks 200 grams of frozen raspberries 80 grams of pistachio nuts
Whipped cream to firm peaks
Jaci can cook raspberry chocolate parfait. 3 flake chocolate bars, broken into bits Chocolate ice cream coating Extra fresh raspberries, a 125-gram punnet. Method Step 1: Whip the cream to firm peaks, then set aside in the fridge until needed Step 2: Place the sugar and water in a small saucepan. Place on the stove and bring to the boil. Using a sugar thermometer, cook until the temperature reaches 118°C. Step 3: Place the egg yolks in a stainless-steel bowl of your mix master. Whip the egg yolks until pale. Once the sugar syrup has reached 118°C, with the mixer running, pour it down the side of the bowl onto the egg yolks. Step 4: Whip until cooled. This takes about six minutes. Step 5: Fold the whipped
cream into the cooled egg yolks, then fold in the frozen raspberries, pistachio nuts, and chocolate bars to make the ice cream mixture. Step 6: Line a 5cm x 20cm loaf tin with plastic wrap, leaving a large overhang. Spoon the ice cream mixture into the loaf tin and freeze overnight. Step 7: The next day, remove the parfait from the loaf tin and discard the plastic wrap. Step 8: Top with chocolate ice cream coating and fresh raspberries. Yarn bombers weave joy By Jaci Hicken All through December, visit Kyabram’s main shopping precinct to view the year-long craft work of the Kyabram Yarn Bombing group. The Kyabram Yarn Bombers began as a COVID-19 response initiative, but has evolved into a thriving community project now in its sixth year. Kyabram Yarn Bombing co-ordinator Trish Worsfold conceived the idea in mid-July 2020 when businesses were struggling and people felt disconnected from family and friends. “I came up with the idea of doing yarn bombing in Kyabram, because it was the first year of COVID, and people were feeling disconnected from family and friends and the retail businesses were doing it tough,” Mrs Worsfold said. “I think it was around mid July, I sort of decided that we needed to do something.” Working within COVID-19 restrictions, Mrs Worsfold
Kyabram Yarn Bombers take over Allan St with festive yarn decorations. assembled the original group through phone calls and faceto-face conversations. “I spoke to the police and they allowed 10 of us to get together face to face, but we had to be in an open place, so we actually took up residence in a shelter outside the Fauna Park,” she said. “And so that was the original 10 who could meet face-to-face.” The project expanded beyond the core group to include homebased contributors and partnerships with local organisations.
“I got onto Warramunda, the aged care facility, spoke with the CWA, spoke with the Red Hat ladies,” Mrs Worsfold said. “And so groups were working independently and some working from home, because they were housebound anyway, not just because of the restrictions, but because of disabilities or just ageing.” What began as a two-year project has continued due to its social benefits for participants. “Many elderly people found that they were contributing to
the community and were feeling valued,” Mrs Worsfold said. “Some people have said that people they were reasonably friendly with, they have come to know on a deeper level through this group, so that is gratifying.” The group meets fortnightly, increasing to weekly sessions in September, with the original 10 also gathering every Tuesday. Their decorative work comes into its own for Christmas with a handcrafted tree display and covering all 60 bollards at the fountain intersection and light poles throughout Kyabram’s main street. “If you know the main street of Kyabram, the tree-scape is a bit sparse, so after the first year, I decided that we needed more colour in the street,” Mrs Worsfold said. The group also maintains a free-standing display of handmade trees in the arcade, adding new pieces annually. A highlight of the yarn bombing is the fully crocheted murals hanging on the front of the Albion building.
The yarn bombers have incorporated charitable work into their activities. Last year, they raised $1,300 through sales of their handmade crafts at Boomerang Travel’s window display and at local markets, purchasing $50 meat vouchers from a local butcher for Christmas distribution. “We gave those to the people who work on the ground, they know the people in genuine need and we found that both of them agreed that they had people who were too proud to ask for help,” Mrs Worsfold said. The vouchers were distributed through the Salvation Army captain and school chaplain. This year’s charitable efforts continue despite missing the spring market, with residents of Warramunda’s independent living unit contributing handmade rugs for fundraising. ▯ The project receives support from Bendigo Bank, the Shire of Campaspe, the Kyabram Club, GMCU and the Kyabram Men’s Shed.

The Stanhope community is preparing for its annual Christmas carols event, scheduled for Friday, December 12, 2025 at 6pm at Station Park. Stanhope Community Development Group committee member Christine Dicketts said the event would feature performances from local schools. “We have the Stanhope Primary School and the Stanhope kindergarten children singing and the lovely St Mary school from Rushworth singing as well,” Ms Dicketts said. The event will include face painting, a free jumping castle and barbecue, with Santa making an appearance. “People come from around the area and we might have more people coming from Rushworth this time, because Rushworth St Mary’s are singing,” she said. Many Stanhope children attend school at Rushworth, strengthening the connection between the communities. The event receives support from several sponsors including Fonterra, Shine

Lights make a good night The Lions Club of Echuca will again organise the Illawarra Neighbourhood Christmas lights charity collection on the corner of Illawarra Dve and Butcher St, Echuca. The event will run for four nights leading up to Christmas, beginning Saturday, December 21 from about 8.30pm, continuing on December 22, 23, and 24.
Lions Club of Echuca co-ordinator for the Illawarra Dve Christmas lights, Geoff Crossman, said the community event has been running successfully for over 15 years. “The Lions Club will be there giving out lollipops and people come along, donate money and they go and have a look at the houses,” Mr Crossman said.
“Illawarra Dve has always done this for at least the last 20 years. “The houses collectively get together and light up the street. “The Christmas lights look fantastic, the trees are covered, the houses are covered and the gardens. “There are 1000s of Christmas lights used. The event has raised
more than $50,000 to date, with all funds going to local charities. “The money that is raised goes towards Lions Club projects,” Mr Crossman said. “Wayne Norwood at Charles L King and Co, First National Real Estate, they sponsor the event to a certain degree with a big sign.” Mr Crossman is
encouraging more residents to participate. “We are doing a drive for more people to light up their houses this year,” he said. “If there are more people in the area along Illawarra Dve, who are not already part of the Christmas light spectacle or the surrounding area, who would like to put up lights and be part of
the Christmas celebrations, they would be more than welcome. “Father Christmas normally makes an appearance on each night, as long as we can find enough helpers.” ▯ Residents interested in participating in the light display can contact Echuca Lions Club for more information.
Decking town hall with Santa’s Cave Santa isn’t too far off now – and the Kyabram Town Hall is getting ready for his arrival. Santa’s Cave, a beloved fixture on Kyabram’s festive calendar, returns this year with all its familiar charm and perhaps a few magical surprises. The historic town hall will be transformed into a spectacular winter wonderland, where families can journey together through Santa’s magical cave experience. Families enter the magical
tunnel, adorned with twinkling fairy lights and the soft sound of jingling bells, stepping into the enchanting North Pole one step at a time. What awaits patient children at the end of the tunnel are masses of toys, decorated trees and, of course, the big man himself — Santa Claus. This tradition started in 2015 when volunteer Vanessa Cross made a promise to bring Santa’s magic to Kyabram families.
Of course, she had to come through on her promises, and so began the planning and tradition of Santa’s Cave. Since then, local businesses and volunteers have united to bring this magical event to life each year, collaborating to captivate and amaze children and families throughout Campaspe Shire. The centrepiece of the celebration involves community-built Christmas trees. “We have Christmas tree frames that we give to people and they build up their own Christmas trees, under these frames, which we put on to the green,” Robbie said. “Each year we have 40 to 50 Christmas trees and then we have the Christmas lights that the council puts up, as well as the grotto.” This year introduces three real Christmas trees, including a special memorial tree. “One of the real Christmas trees is going to be a
Re-Grow Rushworth president Robbie Wilson is encouraging the community to embrace the Christmas spirit as the town prepares for its annual festive display on the village green. Re-Grow Rushworth is a community organisation dedicated to revitalising and enhancing the town through various initiatives and events throughout the year. The group plays a vital role in bringing residents together and fostering community spirit in Rushworth. “Santa’s Grotto at Christmas is more than the grotto,” Robbie said. “The grotto is only a small part of the whole display.” This marks Robbie’s first year helping to organise
memorial tree that people can put decorations, write their loved one’s name on it and we will place it on the Christmas tree,” he said. “And then next year, we will put those decorations on again and people can do the same thing, so it becomes a continuous thing each Christmas.” The Christmas display will be set up in early December and will remain in place throughout the festive season, providing weeks of enjoyment for locals and visitors alike. The initiative aims to welcome Rushworth’s growing population. “Rushworth has got a lot of new people moving in and they come from all different places and they sort of don’t know what happens,” Robbie said.
“We have decided we want them to be part of the community and make them feel part of our community. “This year for Christmas our motto is lights, lights, lights, and we are encouraging residents to illuminate their trees with solar lights.” The festivities culminate at the Rushworth Market on Saturday, December 20, 2025, from 8.30am to 1pm at Rushworth Village Green on High St, where Santa will be available for photos in his grotto. ▯ Community members interested in participating or obtaining Christmas tree frames can contact Re-Grow Rushworth through their Facebook page or speak to local volunteers at upcoming community events.

Slowly add the natural sweetener, one spoonful at a time, beating until glossy stiff peaks form. 4. Add vinegar and vanilla, gently folding through. 5. Spoon small pavlova nests onto the lined tray (or pipe for a neater finish). 6. Bake for 1 hour, then turn the oven off and leave meringues inside to cool completely. 7. Mix yogurt with vanilla. 8. 12 days of making merry By Jaci Hicken The Kyabram Chamber of Commerce is launching its annual 12 Days of Christmas promotion, running from December 11 to December 22, offering shoppers the chance to win $3,000 worth of gift cards while supporting community businesses. The festive initiative encourages residents to shop locally by offering entry into prize draws with every purchase at participating stores. Shoppers must fill out an entry form with each purchase to be eligible for the draws. Participating businesses can be identified by promotional posters displayed in their windows, with entry forms available at these stores. Kyabram Chamber of Commerce vice-president Steve Vick said the promotion featured special Christmas deals across
participating businesses. “It is 12 days where all the local traders will offer Christmas specials,” he said. “They will all have special promotions to encourage people coming to their stores to shop.” The prize structure includes two $500 Kyabram gift card draws on December 18, followed by two $1,000 gift card draws on December 23. “With every purchase, you fill out an entry form and go into the draw to win $3,000 worth of Kyabram gift cards,” Mr Vick said. Participating businesses span the main shopping street and the industrial estate, offering a diverse range of products. “Everything from clothing, giftware, shoes, hardware, sportswear, car care, everything you can think of can be found for Christmas in Kyabram,” Mr Vick said. The majority of hospitality and food venues
are also involved. Goulburn Murray Credit Union Kyabram serves as the major sponsor for the event. Vintage Christmas magic By Jaci Hicken At this time of year, Petit Vélo transforms into a Christmas wonderland, with its retro Christmas window display drawing locals and visitors alike to stop and take a look. Petit Vélo owner Leanne Gruner thinks it is really lovely to see families come in and the kids all picking an ornament. “Tourists, local families all over the place, people that didn’t even know I was here, see Christmas lights and stop on their way through to Echuca,” she said. Leanne has transformed Petit Vélo into a treasure trove of vintage finds and local crafts. Located at 2/41 Moore St, Rochester, the store operates as much more than a typical second-hand shop. “I bought Petit Vélo after the flood, when it was going to close down,” Leanne said.

Photo: Jordan Townrow “It is a vintage, retro, antique, collectible, gift wear shop, we have a little bit of everything.” The shop has gained recognition for its extensive Christmas display, featuring trees spanning decades. “We have vintage trees from the 1950s through to
new trees,” Leanne said. “We have a lot of glass trees, we have ornaments from all over the world. “I get ornaments in from Europe, from India, all hand-blown glass.” She particularly enjoys the nostalgic appeal of older items.
“I am liking the vintage 1970s things right now, the really tacky stuff, the felty Santas and the angels with the bright yellow hair and things like that,” Leanne said. The store supports local artisans through various partnerships.

“We have handmade things by different local people, like the woollen craft group make a lot of scarves, blankets and toys,” Leanne said. “I have another local lady who crochets little bears and local artists with their artwork in the shop.” A unique feature is the shop’s 1960s ride-on horse, which serves a charitable purpose. “I have it fully operational, and all proceeds for that go to whatever charity my kids pick every month,” she said. “Last month, my children chose to support teenage mental health.” For the upcoming Rochy Shop Local day, Petit Vélo will offer 10 per cent off Christmas ornaments and picks. ▯ The shop operates Wednesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and weekends from 10am to 3pm.

DECEMB ER 2 TO 30 – CH R ISTMAS IL LUMINATION Campaspe Shire comes alive, with illumination stations spread throughout the district. They are in Echuca at Hopwood Gardens, Kyabram at Memorial Park and Rochester at Rotunda Park. Designed to kick-start your Christmas shopping, the idea is that you purchase at participating Kyabram stores to enter the draw to win giveaways and Kyabram shopping vouchers. Participating stores will display a 12 Days of Christmas poster on their windows in the lead-up to the event.
