Council approves road closures for Criterium race, Salmon Festival By Sonora Slater Express staff writer The Winters City Council has approved street closures for two downtown events scheduled later this year, including the return of the Winters Criterium cycling race and the annual Winters Salmon Festival. Both items were approved as part of the council’s consent agenda at its most recent meeting. The Winters Criterium will take place Saturday, Aug. 22,
from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a closedloop course through downtown Winters. The criterium is a competitive road bicycle race in which participants complete multiple laps around a short circuit. Organizers expect approximately 500 participants and spectators for the event, which features multiple racing categories throughout the morning and early afternoon. The race is designed to bring regional cycling enthusiasts into downtown Winters and generate economic activity for local businesses and restaurants. The electric motorcycles were used by Winters Police officers for patrol operations during the event, including pedestrian enforcement and traffic-related duties, according to Winters Police Chief John P. Miller. With a fireworks show also taking place in Woodland, attendance from outof-town visitors was lower than in previous years. However, the event still brought thousands of people into Winters. Miller reported that officers counted approximately 3,000 vehicles exiting the city across all four exits between 10 and 11 p.m. “This was all hands on deck from Winters PD,” Miller said, noting the department did not receive outside assistance this year. Fireworks celebration debuts new public safety equipment, sees fewer incidents The city of Winters’ July 3 Fireworks Show offered more than a dazzling display in the night sky this year, as the community event also marked the public debut of new equipment for both the Winters Fire Department and Winters Police Department. Attendees gathered for an evening of music, food trucks and vendor booths before the fireworks show began. Community member Stormi Norfolk performed the National Anthem and “God Bless America” ahead of the display. The event also served as the first public appearance of the Winters Fire Department’s new Truck 26 ladder truck and the Winters Police Department’s new Zero electric motorcycles. Truck 26 was staged at the Winters High School courtyard with its lights flashing and the American flag flying from the ladder, according to Winters Fire Chief Jack S.

The Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District is accepting applications from residents for free air purifiers through its 2026 Fresh Air For All — Home Air Filtration Program, which helps households reduce exposure to wildfire smoke and other harmful air pollutants by improving indoor air quality. Approximately 780 air purifiers will be awarded through a random drawing of eligible applicants. Applications are open
