Picnic Day
Thousands heading to UCD for Picnic Day
Enterprise staff
Picnic Day returns for its 112th edition on Saturday with forecasts calling for mostly sunny skies and temperatures reaching 76 degrees.
Organizers of the event — annually the largest college open house in California and biggest student-run event in the country — are again promising more than 200 familyfriendly events and activities, many of them at least a little educational and all a lot of fun. About 75,000 people are expected. For a full schedule of events, check out the website at https://picnicday.ucdavis. edu/.
From the first hiss of pancake batter poured onto the alumni pancake feed griddle until silence returns to Lake Spafford after the Battle of the Bands, more than 200 activities will fill Saturday’s Picnic Day.
The 112th edition of UC Davis’ free open house will sprawl across the largest campus in the UC system.
Meaning, you can’t see it all. Cannot do it. There are some tips that can help you make the most of the campus’ biggest day of the year, however. Away we go:
n Plan ahead: Tucked between big draws like the Doxie Derby and the Chemistry Magic Show on the schedule are events for every taste — including a taste for that delicious liquid-nitrogen ice cream.
Whether you want to milk a goat (and, really, who doesn’t?) or learn still more complex facts about climate change, take a simulated spacewalk (not like Sandra Bullock in “Gravity,” hopefully) or venture into the Biomedical House of Horrors, you will see more — and your feet will thank you — if you scribble down an outline for your day.
n Do not smoke ’em, even if ya got ’em: Every inch of campus is now tobacco-free. It’s alcohol-free, too, no matter your age. Campus police have warned that they have a ZERO TOLERANCE policy (they write it in all caps, even). We’re guessing they mean business.
Davis police aren’t messing about, either: many fines for alcohol-related violations are doubled on Picnic Day.
n Arrive early: Organizers suggest Picnic Day-goers pedal, walk or bus to campus. If you must drive, be aware that parking lots and garages fill up by late morning.
For more detailed information about lots and garages, take a gander at the Picnic Day website: http://picnicday.ucdavis.edu.
n Meet up: Choose a check-in point in case you and yours get separated. A lost children’s booth will be set up on the Hoagland Hall lawn, in the Multicultural Children’s Faire.
n Be warned: Expect long lines to nab tickets for popular events, like the Chemistry Magic Show. Arrive early to avoid the crushing sadness of missing out. Because, explosions!
n Dress smart: It should go without saying, but choose the comfortable clothes and shoes. Especially the shoes. Sunscreen and hats: also a good idea. Umbrellas are handy, rain or shine. Consider toting extra water.
n Get help: A first-aid station will be located next to the Memorial Union bus terminal.
n Fido’s welcome (mostly): You’re welcome to bring your dog — on a leash — but note that there are some buildings into which only service animals can venture.
If you do bring your dog, please do not shoot him disapproving looks after seeing the awesomeness of which those Frisbee, flyball and herding dogs are capable. That’s not nice. He’s only a dog!
n Stop for swag: You can buy Picnic Day T-shirts at the UC Davis Bookstore. If you head upstairs, to 349 Memorial Union, you can get your mitts on special centennial glasses for $8 — or $7 if you’ve signed the Picnic Day Pledge to behave yourself, handily located on the Picnic Day website, http://picnicday.ucdavis.edu/picnic-daypledge
n Eat something (or many somethings):
The Student Organization Faire food booths will be cooking up the savory: tacos, kebabs, sisig (that’s Filipino spicy pork, we’re told), tortas and serving up the sweet: shaved ice, green tea smoothies, frozen chocolate bananas — and more.
The Coffee House, Silo and Silo Courtyard will provide an array of other items, including corn dogs, to keep you fueled up. That is, if you consider corn dogs fuel, which we absolutely do.
n Another option? Bring a picnic. Sounds crazy, but it might catch on.

‘Journey Home’ is the theme
By Cody Kitaura Special to The Enterprise
There’s no place like home, and Aggies will celebrate the familiar during the 112th Picnic Day, which will carry the theme “The Journey Home: Destination Davis.”
The theme was announced in November by the students who organize the event, which is thought to be the largest campus open house in the nation.
“This year’s theme celebrates the many paths that lead us home to Davis,” Picnic Day vice chair Saanika Gupta said in a news release. “Whether you’re stepping onto campus for the first time, returning after years away, or have always called Davis home.”

Longtime Aggie serves as parade marshal
By Colette Daulton Special to The Enterprise
Paul Cody prepares to take his place as this year’s Picnic Day parade marshal, a role that celebrates his more than two decades of dedication to the beloved tradition. Picnic Day is set for April 18, 2026.
“It’s an honor,” said Cody, a senior research associate in Student Affairs who served as staff advisor for Picnic Day in the Center for Student Involvement for 25 years. “I take great pride in serving as the marshal.”
Picnic Day became student run in 1912, just three years after its inception in 1909. Today, the event is organized and managed by a board of directors composed entirely of UC Davis students, who plan everything from the parade route to the hundreds of activities across campus.
As an advisor, Cody had various responsibilities to help the board facilitate logistics and operations. He navigated relationships with the city of Davis, local agencies, and campus constituents. During the parade, Cody could be
spotted driving around in a gator, troubleshooting wherever needed. In his down time, he made it a tradition to check out a new event each year.
Cody was first nominated for parade marshal while still in his advisor role — but he said no.
“I said no because there were more qualified people,” he recalled. When the nomination came again this year, he reconsidered. He explains his decision to accept the role was led by the words of a previous marshal and the longtime ASUCD business manager, Marc Champagne, who assured him that it was a great experience.
Selected by the student-run Picnic Day board of directors, Cody joins a legacy of parade marshals, including Peter J. Shields, the second chancellor Emil Mrak, philanthropists Robert and Margrit Mondavi, and many more. As marshal, he’ll deliver a speech at the grandstands for the opening ceremonies and ride in a float.
“[The parade] is a little out of my comfort zone, but I want to embrace the entire experience,” Cody said.

Fashion show is ‘Laced in Reverie,’ inspired by cult film
By Michael G. French Special to The Enterprise
The UC Davis Fashion and Design Society will present “Laced in Reverie,” the 2026 Picnic Day Fashion Show, on April 18. The event will spotlight fashion created and executed by the Department of Design undergraduate students in the “Signature Collection” course.
Adele Zhang, Senior Continuing Lecturer and “Signature Collection” course instructor, is pleased to announce that the Department of Design will host the fashion show at its outdoor Makerspace Courtyard in Cruess Hall. The event will be presented live at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
“The theme we have decided on will take inspiration from the 1986 movie ‘Labyrinth,’ as we wanted to capture the Picnic Day theme of ‘Journey Home’ and encapsulate
the signature designers’ overall concept of self-discovery,” said Amy Lee, FADS co-president.
“To accompany this theme, we have chosen the title, ‘Laced in Reverie.’ Reverie meaning ‘a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts or daydreams.’ We wanted to capture the elegance of the fashion show’s theme as well as the dreamlike nature of nostalgia and self-discovery in our designer’s collections to show how things are delicately laced together like clothing.”
There will be eight signature collection designers in total this year. The show will also include single and cohort garments along with new additions to the university’s acclaimed Red Dress Collection which uses fashion to bring awareness women’s heart health issues.
A reserved ticket guarantees

patrons a seat at the show. Free standing room is available behind the reserved seating. Tickets are $15 until April 11, and $17 thereaf-
ter. Any remaining tickets will be $18 on Picnic Day. Advance tickets are available through the Aggie Ticket Office
online at ucdavisaggies.evenue. net/events/STUD or by phone or in person Mon–Fri, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., via (530) 752-2471 or the UC Davis Health Stadium.
In conjunction with the fashion show, there will be a one-day installation that showcases each designer’s process along with their other works, including textiles, wearable technology and more.
In addition, the UC Davis Design Museum in Cruess Hall will be open noon to 4 p.m. for patrons to attend “Village Homes: A Radical Plan,” a 50th anniversary celebration of design experiment in community living in Davis.
The department of design is housed in the College of Letters and Science at UC Davis and is the only comprehensive design program in the University of California system.

Aggie football team kicks off festivities
Enterprise staff
UC Davis football, coming off a second consecutive season making a deep run into the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, got its 2026 spring season started with practice on Friday, April 3.
The Spring Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, at 10:15 a.m. at UC Davis Health Stadium on the morning of the annual Picnic Day. The spring game has free admission.
When the Aggies take the field to showcase their offseason work, locals are encouraged to make the Spring Game a part of their Picnic Day morning. Not only will there be exciting football to watch, but there will also be events throughout the day that should make the event a fun part of anyone’s Picnic Day.
“We’ve decided to do our Spring Game on Picnic Day because of what that day means to Davis,” said UCD head coach Tim Plough. “It’s a celebration of the school and community that we love. We want the football team to be a focal point of that celebration, and we hope the community, alumni, and students will come out and celebrate this program, Davis and these players.
“The team and I want to continue the trajectory we’ve been on as a program by packing in Shredville on Picnic Day and together we can ‘Find Joy’.”
Friday's practice was the first of 15 UC Davis will hold over the next month of April, and first official time the Aggies have taken the practice field as a full unit since the previous season.
“We started phase two of our offseason program today following another great job by coach [Jeff] Bourque and his staff during our first phase getting the guys ready and stronger,” Plough said. “Now we get on the field and get to do some football, and today was our first practice. It's always exciting

on the first day as the guys brought great energy out there as they found joy.
“The environment and effort throughout the practice was great and we will continue to work on the things we can improve on. We are excited to work on building out our depth and working to make sure everyone understands their role on the team as we head into the third phase and get closer to the season.”
Things got started on Bob Biggs Practice Field, where the Aggies spent the first hour of practice working on the individual fundamentals that will win football games come the fall. When it was time, the team got together and started the transition down to the UC Davis Health Stadium field, making sure to serenade Jim Sochor with “Aggie Fight” as they jogged down to the turf.
When the Aggies took the turf, things took a more team orientated direction as both the offensive and defensive units truly were
able to battle each other in 11-on11 full squad drills and plays. That high level of competition carried the Aggies for the remainder of the spring's opening practice session and set the tone for the next month of work UC Davis is slated to put in.
Things will open with the fan favorite, “Kids Run,” helping lead the Aggies onto the field. Throughout the modified game there will be opportunities for fans and Davis students in attendance to win prizes and take part in competitions and at the end of the day the Aggies will be signing autographs for fans on the field.
Families are also encouraged to bring their kids, as during the game the Aggies will open the practice to allow them to take the field and run drills with the team in a community unifying event that fans will not want to miss. Around the concourse there will be concessions open for purchase, with Woodstock’s and food trucks available for fans to purchase.

Fans will also be able to renew and purchase their 2026 season tickets, securing their spot in “Shredville” for another exciting season in Davis.
The Aggies will host 15 practices over the month of April, with the Spring Game coming during the middle part of the month. Practices are open to the public when
held on the UC Davis Health Stadium field, but not during the Bob Biggs Practice Field portions of the practice.
UC Davis opens its 2026 season at Portland State on Saturday, Aug. 29, in a Big Sky showdown. On Saturday, Sept. 19, Stetson makes the trip to Davis for the home opener.
