Organic Farming in El Dorado County

Travel anywhere in El Dorado County and you’ll discover a nature-based quality of life that respects the resources and beauty of the land. The true El Dorado spirit is to use nature’s bounty without depleting it while maintaining an ecological balance. It’s a way of life you can savor in the deep flavors of farm-to-table foods and celebrate in unique and classic wines — all while surrounding yourself with the invigorating beauty of El Dorado’s rivers and valleys.

Here’s how three of our local farmers, two vineyards, and one produce farm bring out the most nature has to offer.

Chateau Davell Winery: Letting nature perfect the grape

At Chateau Davell, owner Eric Hays produces 17 varietals and blends from rich organic grapes grown, harvested, and vinted using old-world methods paired with modern ecologically-guided craft. Instead of herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers, Eric “cover crops” his fields: a variety of plants are used to improve biodiversity, control weeds and pests, and enrich grape-growing nutrients in the soil. Their dedication to sustainability and the organic lifestyle extends into the winemaking process itself. Grapes are harvested at their peak and gently pressed. The wine is unfiltered, so the true song of the grape comes through with perfect pitch. All Chateau Davell wines are known for their signature bouquet, flavor, body, and clarity that only a boutique winery can achieve. The rustic Chateau Davell tasting room is built entirely from repurposed wood,

including a long wavy-grained counter made from a huge fallen pine. The wine bottles, corks, and labels are recycled. It’s a popular tourist stop and a hang-out for Chateau Davell Wine Club members. The most common remark made by customers is, “We love all the varieties; so clean and smooth! They are feeling the art.”

Organic Farms + Wineries in El Dorado County, California

“Sustainability to me is about respect,” says Eric. “We respect the restorative power of nature and how, with the proper stewardship, it allows us to craft wines of exceptional fruit/acid balance, character, and expression. Because our wines are handcrafted in extremely small lots and do not rely on mass-production techniques, we have the freedom to let each vintage speak for itself with minimal interference. You can taste it.”

Narrow Gate Vineyards in Pleasant Valley

Frank and Teena Hildebrand’s Narrow Gate Vineyards turns out 1500 cases of wine a year. Their boutique size allows them to produce naturally-crafted wines of distinctive depth and character – a true discovery for travelers who seek new wine

Narrow Gate Vineyard is a flagship farm for what is known as biodynamic farming. It’s the unification of the entire farm with a natural ecosystem that is diversified, balanced, and fertile. Certification requires a healthy integration of crops and livestock, land set aside for biodiversity, and organic certification of not just the grapevines but of the whole property.

According to Frank, biodynamic farming is better expressed as “regenerative” versus “sustainable.” As Frank puts it, “Nature doesn’t hold to a level. It isn’t static, as the word sustainability seems to imply. It is constantly cycling through connection, growth, and decay. From the microbiome to the grape and on to the wine itself, if you focus on regenerative processes, you are working with the rhythm of nature’s supply and demand. You’ve struck gold, so to speak, and it shows in the wine. It takes a light touch. But boy, that light touch takes a lot of work!”

Frank Hildebrand, Narrow Gate Vineyards

The El Dorado County AVA (American Viticultural Area) is highly regarded for the diversity of its microclimates and its rich mix of volcanic soil, decomposed granite, sandy loam, and clay. Narrow Gate Vineyards produces grapes ideally matched to their terroir. As a result, their varietals have a robust signature, and because no additives have been included for year-toyear consistency, each vintage is the story of a single year, a chapter in the life of a vineyard on the slopes of the Sierra foothills. According to Teena, many wine lovers seek the healthier benefits of organic and biodynamic wines. Frank adds, “There is a ribbon of pureness and familiarity that runs through all of our wines that our customers pick up on and comment about. That tells me we are on the right path.”

24 Carrot Farms: Nourishing Community Ties

The sharp rise in consumer demand for organic foods and the healthy lifestyles they represent hit a sweet spot with the local buy-direct organic farm model, and nobody does this better than Ben Hansen’s 24 Carrot Farm. Besides providing high-quality produce using sustainable farming practices, 24 Carrot Farm has had an unexpectedly strong impact on the community.

Farm is certified organic throughout its 12 acres, offering a dazzling array of vegetables and fruits grown on the premises, as well as products from partnering organic farms and bakeries nearby. Customers can choose from over 35 different kinds of vegetables and fruits just yards from where they were grown. Many say they feel a stronger connection to the land and love all the choices they have.

Because the vegetables and fruits are grown in a sustainable ecological system that ensures dense nutrients are loaded into the crops, the taste and increased energy are immediately apparent. This is one of the reasons people keep coming back, week after week and year after year: it is food that tastes incredible and it promotes well-being. Even vegetable-shy children gobble it all up. When asked about sustainability, Ben says he prefers the word “community”. “Honest food builds community,” he says. “I’ve seen couples come here with infants, and years later, they are still buying from us, only they have three kids helping fill the cart.”

Customer-friendly “U-Pick” times during certain seasons allow people to roll up their sleeves and pick their own strawberries, flowers, apples, pumpkins, and vegetables. Ben has even set aside some land where less fortunate families can grow their own food.

SNO-PARKs along Hwy 50 – pick up a pass online or at locations in El Dorado County.

After a day in the snow, there’s no better way to unwind than by sampling some of El Dorado County’s award-winning wines. You’ll find over 70 family-owned wineries here, offering a range of interesting and sometimes lesser-known varietals, all resulting in distinctive mountain-grown wines.

Many tasting rooms transform into warm, inviting retreats during the winter months, complete with roaring fireplaces and picturesque vineyard views. Just off Highway 50, you’ll discover Nello Olivo Wines, Myka Estates, 1850 Wine Cellars and Bumgarner Tasting Room, offering relaxed tasting experiences where chatting with the winemaker is not unusual.

El Dorado County offers a variety of cozy accommodations that will make your winter getaway truly special. For a romantic escape, book a stay at the Miner’s Cabin at Madrone Tree Hill, located on a 50-acre family-owned property among the Apple Hill™-area ranches and wineries. The patio with a firepit is the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a glass of wine.

Nearby Ponderosa Ridge A Bed and Breakfast Inn offers a peaceful retreat on an 11-acre property, including a three-acre apple orchard open only to guests. Guests can enjoy homemade country breakfasts made from scratch daily, with fresh baked goods each morning. It’s an ideal base camp for exploring the nearby farms and wineries.

The Harper Micro Motel is a beautifully restored 1940s-era, foursuite motel in Placerville, seconds off Highway 50. It has full modern kitchens, is an easy walk/ride to restaurants, and offers complimentary bikes. The motel provides easy access to Placerville’s Main Street, wineries, and attractions.

Pack your puffer jacket and favorite beanie, remember your sense of adventure, and get ready to ski, sip, and stay in El Dorado County this winter.

WATERFALL HIKES

Bassi Falls via Towering Rocks Trail

Located in the Eldorado National Forest off Ice House Road near Placerville, this 100+ foot waterfall is well worth the hike. It’s approximately 2.9 miles round trip from the parking lot, a combination of dirt trail and granite. Be sure to walk to the base of the falls so you can see it in all its glory. Note that in early spring there may still be snow patches on the ground, so plan accordingly. Great trail for dogs and kids.

Hiking level: Easy –elevation gain 360ft

Dogs allowed: Yes

Horsetail Falls Trail

A little further up Highway 50 from Bassi Falls is Horsetail Falls, a dramatic 800-foot waterfall flowing down the glacier-carved granite of Desolation Wilderness. From the trailhead you will follow Pyramid Creek Trail into the Desolation Wilderness. Day use hikers must get a free permit at the trailhead and there is a parking fee. The first part of the hike, along granite fields, offers beautiful views as it takes you to the base of the falls, which can be a destination unto itself. From the Pyramid Creek trailhead to the base of Horsetail Falls, it’s approximately a 1.5mile hike. This is a great view point but the more experienced hiker may want to go to the top. This hike then becomes difficult.

Hiking level: Moderate –elevation gain 580ft

Dogs allowed: Yes

Eagle Falls

Lake Tahoe has no shortage of beautiful scenery, but waterfall lovers know to head to Emerald Bay, where a short hike results in the spectacular Eagle Falls, which feeds into Emerald Bay. From the Eagle Falls trailhead, it’s a 5-minute walk to the bridge that gets you up close and personal with the falls. Continue up the trail for another .25 mile to Eagle Lake, where you’re surrounded by towering granite.

Hiking level: Easy to moderate

Dogs allowed: Yes

Dutch Creek Fall & Johntown Falls

Awesome waterfalls celebrate the marriage of Dutch Creek and Johntown Creek. Park at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park on Hwy 49 and pay the fee at the museum. Walk across the one lane South Fork American River bridge. Pass the campground and take the first right turn onto Bayne Road. The trailhead is on the left side. This will add 1/2 to your hike but worth it having access to parking and exploring the park. The hike from the trailhead is 1.5 miles out and back. This trail is a bit overgrown but easy to follow. Some sections where there are ropes to assist you with downhill portions. It is quite popular but not overly crowded.

On the Road with the El Dorado County Quilt Trail

January 2026 marks the 11th anniversary of the EDC-FTA Quilt Trail Project. For over a decade, barn quilt enthusiasts have traveled to our region to take part in a movement that began in Ohio in 2001 and has since sparked a coast-to-coast connection.

Today, 26 vibrant Americana works of art—known as barn quilt blocks—dot the landscape of El Dorado County. Each block tells a story unique to its location, with descriptive placards inviting travelers to discover the history and artistry behind the design. As the trail continues to grow, it serves as a beautiful intersection of agri-tourism, ranch marketing, and primitive art.

A Look Inside Fudge Factory Farm

Nestled quietly off the beaten track, with panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Fudge Factory Farm offers a peaceful retreat from life’s daily chaos. Established in 1985 by visionary entrepreneurs, this womenowned organic and sustainable farm has blossomed into a beloved destination for families seeking wholesome fun, nature, and delectable handmade treats.

At the farm, the bounty of the land takes center stage. Crops are chosen thoughtfully, based on what thrives in the foothill soil and what can be transformed into fresh produce, candies, wines, jams, pies and specialty confections. Today the farm grows apples, walnuts, raspberries, blackberries, marionberries, blueberries, honeyberries, figs, pawpaws, peaches, tomatoes and tomatillos. And just when visitors think the list is complete, they discover the Christmas trees—meticulously grown and harvested to fill the holidays with festive fragrance and cheer.

But this destination offers far more than flavors. Families can wander the picturesque grounds, where friendly alpacas eagerly await gentle pats and curious interactions. A dedicated children’s play area adds to the charm, offering whimsical structures and plenty of room for little ones to explore, imagine and burn off energy.

One of the farm’s biggest draws is its bustling candy shop, located in a former tractor barn now transformed into a bustling candy shop. Here, skilled artisans craft mesmerizing confections, including 27 varieties of candy-covered apples, 38 flavors of creamy fudge, a seemingly endless assortment of decadent chocolates, amazing ice cream sundaes and fresh baked pies. Guests can watch the magic unfold as skilled chocolatiers mold, dip and decorate treats by hand—a process that is as educational as it is entertaining.

For visitors with a taste for unique libations, the farm’s winery offers small-batch, award-winning berry wines that capture the essence of the orchards and bramble patches. Blackberry and raspberry wines pair perfectly with the farm’s homemade pies and handpies, each bursting with seasonal fruit harvested just steps away.

El Dorado County Farm Trails is proud to partner up with the Mountain Democrat newspaper to produce this yearly guide showing the favorite tastes (and their locations) in our County!

One of the many great things making our county unique is the range of climate zones that you experience while driving through our region. From grasslands to oaks to pines to alpine, there are sights to be seen in each zone along with other experiences to exercise your senses like skiing, whitewater rafting or kayaking.

As farmers, we like to define the world around us by flavors! Our range of local flavors extends

from crisp apples to plump cherries to medium-rare steaks with great local wines to pair with! Don’t forget a locally-made apple pie for dessert!

We extend an invite for you to get a mile or two off the beaten paths of our highways and enjoy an afternoon at a U-pick farm, a local craft winery or brewery or a morning at a farmer’s market. You will find makers and proprietors who literally stand behind their products and will often share samples of their treasures with you.

Small farmers value sustainable land use and love to create value from the land they proudly toil upon. Ask them questions about their passion and watch as they get excited about sharing that passion with you. Watch out – it’s infectious! You might end up out in your yard planting zucchini and tomatoes in a pair of rubber boots without ever noticing the transition!
