COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN SOLANO

2 more deaths take total to 438, but disease trending down Todd R. Hansen

THANSEN@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

FAIRFIELD — The Solano County Public Health Division on Thursday reported two more Covid-related deaths – six since the latest omicron surge that started in late March or early April. Both women were over 75, living at home, and were described as frail and in poor health. One was vaccinated. Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, said all six deaths in the latest surge, three individuals having been vaccinated, fit that same general patient description. He said it is not even certain how much protection the vaccines afforded those who received them. The total number of deaths in the county is 438, with 174 of those coming since July 1, 2021, when vaccines were readily available to the public. Of those 174 individuals, 131 were notvaccinatedand43were, the county reported. Vallejo topped 33,000 novel coronavirus cases, with the 104 new reports since Sept. 8, taking the city’s pandemic total to 33,082. Fairfield added 124 cases for a new count of 29,627. Vacaville is at 27,349 cases with its 94 additions, the county reported. Overall, the county added 389 cases, of which

That put the descending daily case rate at 54.14 and the 10-day average at 56.4, the county reported. Matyas has previously indicated Covid case counts are higher with the increased use of in-home testing, results of which are not generally reported to government agencies and in many cases are not shared with medical providers if medical treatment is not needed. There were 13 residents in hospitals with positive coronavirus tests, down from 15 a week earlier, with three in the intensive care units with the disease. Board OKs Sheriff’s Office to continue use of military-style weapons, vehicles Todd R. Hansen

THANSEN@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

FAIRFIELD — Solano County supervisors this week continued the policy that allows the Sheriff’s Office to use military-style weapons, vehicles, drones and other equipment. The 5-0 vote followed a presentation by Undersheriff Brad DeWall. Examples of the equipment used are the 40 mm launchers, armored vehicles, command vehicles, drones, as well as weapons and other equipment used by the department’s emergency response teams, such as SWAT, negotiation team and tactical dispatch. Supervisor Monica Brown asked DeWall if the Sheriff’s Office works with schools to try to prevent or stop attacks such as the Uvalde school shooting that left 19 students and two educators dead.
