Yellen hopeful economy will avoid recession, but says inflation needs to be tamed Bloomberg News WASHINGTON — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she remains hopeful the U.S. economy can avoid recession, but added that Americans understand the need for the Federal Reserve to conquer inflation. “The Fed is going to need great skill and also some good luck to achieve what we sometimes call a soft landing,” Yellen said Sunday in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “My hope is we will achieve a soft landing, but Americans know it’s essential to bring inflation down and, over the longer run, we can’t have a strong labor market without inflation under control,” she said. Those remarks align her with Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who said last week that he and his policy-making colleagues at the central bank are “strongly committed” to taming inflation, which remains near a 40-year high. Yellen said President Joe Biden’s administration would leave monetary policy to the Fed. “I believe our goals are very well aligned,” she said. “We want to see a strong labor market and inflation coming down to more normal levels.” The Treasury chief also said the U.S. economy’s growth rate was slowing, a natural consequence of rising rates, though the labor market remained “exceptionally strong” with almost two vacancies for every worker looking for a job.

VALLEJO — Sunday was a day to remember those fallen first responders and family members taken way too soon during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Nineteen terrorists associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaida and with ties to Saudi
Arabia hijacked four airplanes 21 years ago and carried out four suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in
Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which changed America forever. Vallejo was one of the few cities in Solano County to host a formal remembrance ceremony with members of the city Fire and Police departments. See 9/11, Page A8

FAIRFIELD — The 30th Annual Tomato and Vine Festival wrapped up Sunday with something new this year: a motorcycle show. Carrie Fahey started work at Anheuser-Busch in March when she heard about the Families Helping Families Annual Car Show at the brewery. Brewery
employees haven’t done the car show for two years because of the pandemic but did offer one Saturday at the Tomato Festival. “I was excited to hear about this program,” she said. “Then I realized that maybe doing a motorcycle show would be a great way to bring more people down on Sunday and bring in more donations.” Fahey brought it up with
Families Helping Families, whose leadership also loved the idea, and then they brought it to the city for approval. “I thought that the bikers we know love doing events like this to help out the community, and they would come out for it,” she said. Fahey talked with her husband Mike, who owns Grumpy’s Motorcycle Shop

One thing Fahey did not count on was the number of other car shows in communities nearby. “Next year I will take a look at the calendar and plan for
