FAIRFIELD — The word hobo has a few different meanings. Most notably, it refers to an unemployed person who wonders and may hop in open railroad boxcars for a free ride. It became an acronym about eight months ago for Helping Others Before Ourselves, a program out the Islamic Center of Fairfield. Raheela Dean brought the program to life after working with the area’s homeless, starting with the former Mission Solano. She took a little break as she

and her husband operated the Hot Spot Cafe and Deli on Chadbourne Road. They sold it just before the novel coronavirus outbreak. “I knew there was so much more for me (to do),” she said. And, she saw a great need, especially with MIRZA Covid-19. People lost jobs, cars and housing, she said. “It was a domino effect,” Dean said. She connected with Free Food Solano and launched a weekly food giveaway at the Islamic Center. They also share boxes with City

Church, Liberty Church and Mission Somoa. What started with roughly 60 boxes weekly has now more than doubled to 120. The food is given to anyone who shows up. “No questions asked,” said Imam Faridbeg Mirza. Dean has also helped to distribute food in Alameda and Santa Clara counties. More the 900,000 pounds of food has been given away in Solano County and the surrounding area since she launched HOBO Exchange. See Hobo, Page A7

President Joe Biden said Saturday that he has “grave concern” about ongoing violence across Israel.

Members of the United Nations Security Council, including the U.S. and China, called on Israel and Hamas to immediately halt more than a week of deadly fighting. That may not be enough, though, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled on Sunday that the fighting will continue as Israel continues to pummel

the Gaza Strip in response to rocket fire from Hamas and other militant groups. The violence has raised the political heat on President Joe Biden, with calls from within his Democratic Party to condemn Israel running up against longstanding U.S. support. Biden also risks blowback at home if he shows any daylight between him and

FA I R F I E L D — Members of the Fairfield-Suisun School Board got off to an energetic start Thursday with a proposal from Trustee Craig Wilson to follow strict rules of order for the session. Before the approval of the agenda was considered, he proposed to the board a motion to remove all opportunity for board members to ask questions or make commits except to speak in favor or against the motion. It carried on a 6-0 vote with Trustee Ana Petero dissenting. Wilson said he was unhappy with the past few meetings because of what he perceived as intentional disruptions or at least grandstanding, which he defined as gratuitously speak-

ing to the public but not to the board. “The meetings are to formally approve or disapprove agenda items, which is the primary reason we meet,” he said. He noted that Robert’s Rules of Order do not allow for debating an issue, except for debating motions. Robert’s Rules of Order is a political book written by Henry Martyn Robert. It is the most widely used manual of parliamentary procedure in the United States. It governs the meetings of a diverse range of organizations – including church groups, county commissions, homeowners associations, nonprofit associations, professional societies, school boards and trade unions. The previous meetings, Wilson said, were See School, Page A7
