The same mapping efforts are underway for state and federal districts. Similar redistricting efforts have been completed recently by Solano cities, some choosing to use independent committees to make the final boundary decisions. The county board has been asked to turn over the responsibility to an independent committee, proponents of which argue that the elected board members should not be deciding what the

FAIRFIELD — Solano County supervisors are banking on energy cost savings to pay for most of the $38.08 million in new and upgraded power infrastructure they recently approved. Megan Greve, director of county General Services, said in an interview Friday that the county pays about $3 million a year in utility costs. That is the entire county and not just the project sites. “This will offset about $2 million of that,” Greve said. The energy cost savings after 20 years is estimated at $39.45 million, and $60.55 million over 25 years, the report to the board states. The larger number reflects five years of having no debt service payments. Most of the savings will be generated by the solar systems

Michael and Dorene Warchut of Green Valley throw a second truckload of green waste from their home into a dumpster for the free Green Waste Days event, Saturday. They went to the Solano Community College parking area for a

total of two days and then were told they needed to leave. Lucky for them a friend had some land where they parked their RV until the threat of fire was over. “But the fire season never really ended,” Michael Warchut said. They did not lose their home to fire during either of those events, but it is very much on their minds year-round, Dorene Warchut said. “It’s always there in the back of your mind,” she said. “What do we take when we leave?” See Valley, Page A12

GREEN VALLEY — Michael and Dorene Warchut planned to bring at least 10 truckloads of green waste for the Green Waste Days event Saturday. It might be nice and green in the valley, but they both are very much aware that living in a wooded area means keeping up with clearing underbrush, removing trees and making a fire-safe space around their home. “We were evacuated in 2017,” he said. “It

FAIRFIELD — The Solano County supervisors this week upped the number of public hearings, from nine to 10, that their redistricting advisory committee will hold – two in each of the five existing districts. The hearings will include weekend dates and night meetings, and will likely have virtual options as well, the board was told by staff Tuesday. There was even discussion about setting up viewing sites at libraries or schools. Redistricting is mandated after the federal census with the idea that each of the five superviso-

The newly minted flower was revealed Saturday in a brief ceremony. It has a red glass ladybug on one petal of vibrant orange. “I wanted to do something sneaking like come in the dark of night and replace it,” Loveall said. “But it became very heavy and I realized to get it here, I needed help.” Loveall, a longtime art teacher in the FairfieldSuisun School District, paid for the supplies to create the new flower out

FAIRFIELD — Artist Jane Loveall’s heart broke every time she drove by the broken glass poppy artwork on Texas and Madison streets. One of the poppies disappeared a few years ago. No one is talking about where it went, Loveall said. So last August she had enough of looking at the broken artwork and decided to take matters into her own hands by recreating the broken flower.
