FAIRFIELD — Solano County’s recent drop in its daily coronavirus case counts did not last long. After daily case declines over the weekend, and on each day leading up to Thursday’s report, the numbers jumped with 46 confirmed cases, the county Public Health Division reported. Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, said the source of the increases continues to be social gatherings of mostly younger residents, and largely at residences. VACAVILLE — Both the Vacaville police officer and the dog he punched during K-9 training are out of the local program. The officer, who was immediately returned to regular police duties after the Dec. 28 incident, continues with those assignments, while the

dog, Gus, was returned to the vendor who supplied him to the Vacaville Police Department and could very well end up serving at another agency, Kris Concepcion, a city spokesman, said during a phone interview Thursday. The Vacaville City Council received a presentation on the three independent investigations into the incident,

veteran officer. Acting Chief Ian Schmutzler is on record stating the officer did not face any criminal charges. There was an immediate public outcry after the release of the video, including calls for the officer to be fired. The footage showed the officer straddling the dog, which was on its back, and then punching the dog in the head.

The explanation at the time was that the handler had rewarded the dog with a toy after successfully completing the session, but when the officer tried to get the toy back, the dog “became angry” and lunged at the handler.
