■ Things missed during the pandemic, No. 5,134: Al Stewart performing with Davis musician Dave Nachmanoff. ■ E6 Columnist: In our list of rockguitar legends we’d have liked to see on the same stage last week, we inexplicably forgot Stevie Ray Vaughan. ■ After 27 years at the Worldwide Leader, ESPN management made Kenny Mayne a contract renewal offer they knew he would refuse. So the talented and likable commentator is now a free agent. He won’t be one for long ... ■ George Kliavkoff, whose career has taken him in many directions, is the new Pac-12 commissioner in a unanimous vote by the conference presidents. Kliavkoff ’s experience does not include much of anything in the area of intercollegiate athletics. When it comes to football, however, he will have a very helpful ally in Merton Hanks, the one-time 49ers player whose football management experience spans two decades. Hanks played from 1991 to 98 with the Niners, ’99 in Seattle, then took on management roles in the NFL and Conference USA before coming to the Pac-12 as Senior Associate Commissioner for Football Operations last September. Kliavkoff also advocated for College Football Playoff expansion. You would, too, if your new employer had made just two appearances in seven years. ■ Days remaining until the first UC Davis fall football game, Sept. 2 at Tulsa: 107 ■ The series finale of Seinfeld aired on NBC 23 years ago this past Friday. — The longtime radio and television color man on UC Davis football broadcasts, Doug Kelly is director of communications for Battlefields2 Ballfields and managing general partner of Kelly & Associates.
