Raphael has been in Davis since 1970, having moved his Sacramento law firm here almost 25 years ago. His wife Netania left her position as a deputy attorney general in Sacramento and joined the practice 15 years ago. The husband-and-wife team practice from their downtown Davis office in the Phoenix House, a restored 1934 building. “We resurrected the interior to period-time,” Raphael said. At Moore & Moore, along with drafting estate plans, Netania uses her criminal-law background to handle criminal defense work. She has found representing juveniles especially rewarding, “a chance to help them before it is too late,”

Netania said. The firm was the first Davis practice handling international business law. That developed into a wide array of transactional business matters for locals, ranging from representing nonprofits to handling incorporations and setting up new business ventures, to employment, negotiations, mergers and acquisitions. As business clients needed their personal matters attended to, the
practice evolved into handling estate plans (wills and trusts), probates and trust administration, plus a full immigration practice. Raphael is the principal who handles these legal affairs. Having spent years litigating in federal courts, mostly with the CIA, Raphael has also devoted years volunteering as a temporary judge for Yolo Superior Court, covering traffic, small claims, landlord/tenant matters and
juvenile cases. To date he has had more than 16,000 matters calendared before him, and presided over more than 1,200 bench trials. Raphael and Netania are joined by their law clerk of 18 years, Jamie Taylor, and their administrative assistant, Brigid Jimenez, both Woodland residents. The Moores credit their staff with rounding out their office. Together they provide legal work as a team — that is part of

Vander Hamm Tire Center Enterprise staff In 1976, Chuck Vander Hamm and his wife Marilyn opened a tire and service store in the small town of Davis — Vander Hamm Tire Center, Inc. Over the years it has become a staple in the Davis community with a loyal following and, at this point, also includes a family legacy — three generations! Their daughter and her husband, Carrie and Rich Falk managed the shop up until 2018 along with their wonderful family of employees that included their six children, who have all worked at the shop at some point over the years. In 2018, the business was passed down to their oldest son, Danny. Danny graduated from the University of Arizona and worked
for the family business while getting his master’s degree at University of San Francisco. His wife, Vibeka, manages the bookkeeping for the business. Vander Hamm’s employees also have been a part of the family for many years. Doug Webster has worked for the company since 1979 — 40 plus years. His sons have previously worked here, too. Enterprise staff The mother-and-daughter team of Carol and Dawn Coder enjoy working together in their day-today roles as Realtors at Coldwell Banker Select Real Estate. “My 37 years of full-time real estate sales in Davis combined with Dawn’s experience, artistic skills and computer knowledge make us a good team,” Carol Coder said. Carol Coder first came to Davis as a student in 1968 and graduated from UC Davis with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She stayed on to raise her family here. Through raising her children and being active in their schools and sports, she came to appreciate just how much Davis has to offer. As an active “soccer mom,” Carol drove lots of carpools to sporting events and served for two years as chairwoman of the All Sports Boosters, the former name of the fundraising

organization for DHS sports teams. Carol held a number of Yolo County Association of Realtors positions including member of the board of directors, secretary/ treasurer, and a member of the regional MLS committee. Dawn is active in many community organizations and events. As a
member of Davis OddFellows she served as co-chair for the Bingo committee for more than three years, and is currently co-chair for the Taste of Davis event. She is also part of the Davis Pride committee. She has been active in Fit4Mom, Davis Parent Nursery School and numerous fundraising events.
To celebrate her son’s first birthday she did a neighborhood food drive for STEAC, collecting more than 450 pounds of food. Giving back to the community is important to Dawn and she wants to ensure it’s important to her son as well. Aside from earning their real estate licenses, Carol and Dawn hold the following designations: Certified Residential Specialist, Certified Negotiations Expert and Envoy Veteran Affairs Loan Training. Carol was named Realtor of the Year in 2003 by the Yolo Association of Realtors and Mentor of the year in 2018 by the Davis office of Coldwell Banker Select Real Estate. The store is now at 548 Kentucky Ave., off East Street in Woodland. Since they’ve moved to the new location, customers enjoy easy access from the I-5 freeway. Paul and his wife, Carman — along with Paul’s brother, Tom, and his wife, Pam — have owned Stabler’s A-1 Appliance for 16 years. They also own an A-1 Appliance store in Placerville. “Now in business for 59 years, I started helping my parents in the store when I was about 13 or 14 years old. They really got things established, and when Carman and I took over in 2005, it was pretty well-known for quality

When Mo and Trudy Kalisky moved from New York to Davis as graduate students in 1970, there wasn’t much good bread to be found. The young couple missed the artisan bakeries from their native Big Apple. So with inspiration from Julia Child, Mo started baking bread at home. By the mid-1980s, it became clear to the Kaliskys that baking could be more than just a hobby. They opened Upper Crust Baking in 1986, serving restaurants and specialty groceries throughout the region, and farmers markets including the Davis Farmers Market, where they were among the first non-farm vendors. Mo and Trudy’s son,

He left home to go to university and lived in Paris for 14 years before returning to Davis in 2016 with his wife and two young daughters. Lorin, who trained with top bakers in the U.S. and France, brought a renewed focus on French baking traditions and local sourcing of ingredients. The bakery is an active partner with the California Grain Campaign
and earned a “Snail of Approval” from Slow Food Yolo. Last year, Upper Crust Baking opened its first retail café and boutique at 634 G St., next to the Davis Food Co-op. The bakery can be found at dozens of farmers markets throughout the Sacramento area, in the Bay Area, and as far as Lake Tahoe. Patio29 is owned by Jeff and Anita Boone and their sons Adam and Eric. Jeff is the mastermind, Anita is tasting room assistant, Adam is head distiller and Eric is tasting room and marketing manager. People might be surprised by the recent growth of California distilleries — there were 184 licensed distilleries by the end of 2019, compared to only 25 in the prior decade, said Anita Boone. “As the first and only craft

distillery in Yolo County, we hope to introduce our aged rum, blended whiskey and flavored whiskeys,” Anita Boone said. “We felt Winters was the perfect spot because it’s already known as a food and drink mecca in the region,” she said. In an unexpected twist, Patio29 staff answered the call to produce roughly 1,150 gallons of hand sanitizer since the COVID-19 pandemic. The agencies and businesses that purchased it made it possible for them to
donate to nonprofits and the medical community. Patio29 has also launched three new flavored whiskeys: Mint Julep, Black Cherry and Lemon Maple join Cinnamon and Orange flavors. ANNE TERNUS-BELLAMY Enterprise staff writer The trials and tribulations of the newspaper industry have been marked in recent years by hedgefund buyouts and corporate mergers followed by bankruptcies, layoffs and news deserts dotting the landscape. Family-owned local newspapers, where everyone from the reporters and editors to the publishers themselves lived and raised families in the communities they covered, have disappeared. But not in Davis. Since 1967, the McNaughton family has owned and operated The Davis Enterprise — in addition to six other newspapers, including the Winters Express and The Daily Republic in Fairfield — as part of McNaughton Newspapers. Longtime Davis resident Foy McNaughton serves as chief executive officer of the company and his brother, Burt, an El Macero resident, is co-publisher of The Davis Enterprise. They were the third generation of newspaper men in the McNaughton family and now the next generation has picked up the reins, including Foy’s son, T. Burt McNaughton, who serves as co-publisher of The Daily Republic, and Taylor Buley, Burt’s son in law, who is co-publisher and general manager of the Enterprise. And despite the ups and downs of operating in an industry that was struggling even before the COVID-19 pandemic, being part of a family business that stretches back generations serves as motivation, Buley said. “I’m proud of the family business,” he said. “There aren’t a lot of companies like us any more. We view ourselves as independent media.” Unlike newspaper chains operated from corporate offices in New York or Chicago or Los Angeles, he said, what happens locally is covered locally. “We’re very much a part of this

continue to struggle, and that’s what we do,” Buley said. “It’s just another chapter, but we’re going to get through this one.” The McNaughton family’s dedication to remaining a familyowned newspaper business even as others in the industry give in to buyouts, mergers and takeovers continues unabated. “Foy is committed to making sure there is family leadership in this company (and) I think that we will never give it up. That’s just
not our family,” said Buley. Added Foy McNaughton himself: “Having children also in the business encourages us to stay involved and not sell out. Familyrun businesses are key to keeping the economy from going to an allcorporate world.” The family’s legacy in newspapers began when F.F. McNaughton — grandfather of Foy and Burt — bought a small local newspaper in Indiana in 1917. Ten years later, he purchased the Pekin
Daily Times in Illinois, the flagship newspaper for more than 60 years. His children led the drive to purchase newspapers in Northern California. In addition to their papers in Davis, Fairfield and Winters, McNaughton Newspapers also owns and operates The Mountain Democrat in Placerville; Village Life in El Dorado Hills; Cameron Park Life; and the Georgetown Gazette.

Enterprise staff Blue Pine Coffins, owned by Dean and Danielle Newberry, is in the first year of their business of making environmentally affordable coffins built from regionally source blue pine. “We are using trees that have died of drought or beetle infestation,” said Danielle Newberry, business manager. The trees have been removed by PG&E due to their fire risk, she added. “They are 100-percent wood and are biodegradable, therefore they follow Jewish burial laws,” Danielle said. “We can customize the size of the coffin if needed.” The idea was spawned when an elderly family member became ill and was

took it upon himself to build the final abode for their beloved. Happily she recovered, yet the idea of building coffins took flight. The Newberrys see their business growing and look to hiring more help in the near future. “It is local, sustainable and made with love,” said Danielle, who has lived in Davis for 37 years.
