Honoring the Greatest Generation Mountain Democrat staff El Dorado County Veterans Affairs Commissioner Daniel Browne Jr. is recognizing the service of local veterans by presenting them with military challenge coins The exchange of challenge coins is a tradition among military units. The coins symbolize service and support, a job done well.

Alice Anderson, El Dorado Hills

Anderson was a pharmacist mate during World War II. As part of the Greatest Generation that stood up to tyranny and oppression, a challenge coin was presented to Anderson for her service and commitment to country.

Anderson said she loves receiving letters in the mail. Anyone who would like to drop her a note may do so; send mail to 4059 Ironwood Drive, El Dorado Hills, 95762.

Robert Baker, South Lake Tahoe

Formerly of Missouri, Robert Baker enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and was stationed in Hawaii during World War II aboard the USS Enterprise. Baker served from 1943 until he was discharged in 1946 and moved to Lake Tahoe in 1981 at 56 years old. Now 96, Baker lives in Tahoe with his family where they enjoy life in the mountains. Low Folsom lake got you down? Michael Raffety Mountain Democrat correspondent

Because of the low water level, the boat ramp at Brown’s Ravine is the sole launching site open at Folsom Lake until the water level drops below 397 feet, revealing a lower water ramp in Granite Bay. Low water also prompted State Parks officials to restrict boats to a 5 mph speed limit due to underwater hazards.

Many El Dorado County residents have seen Folsom Lake’s very low water level. As of May 24 Folsom Lake was 368,040 acre-feet, reported Dan Corcoran, operations director for the El Dorado Irrigation District. A full reservoir would hold 977,000 acre-feet Despite this low level, Corcoran said Monday that EID will have 13,888
