tanding 34 feet from a target less than 2 inches wide, 17-year-old Aaron Hoversten focuses his Anschütz single shot air rifle sights on a dot with a diameter of the lead in a 0.5 mm pencil. Without aid of a magnifying scope, he squeezes his trigger and the 4.5 mm pellet punctures a neat hole through the paper as he prepares for 59 more shots during the next 75 minutes. In a field where margins of error come down to half a millimeter, the Oak Ridge High School senior competed at the 2021 Junior Olympics and shot his personal best, 605.1 out of 600 (any shots over 10 are scored with a decimal, maxing out at 10.9). Hoversten placed 29 out of 114, a stellar showing among Olympians, USA National team members, college teams and other club teams from across the nation. He ■
