Extravagant. Whimsical. Vibrant. Polished, dark hardwood floors, white-washed walls and ceilings, and sleek black accents like windows and chairs create the perfect backdrop for bold statements. THE WEDDING DAY IN A WORD: Magical
WEDDING THEME: Elegant Garden Party
FAVORITE MOMENT FOR LINNEA:
The fireworks! The day went by so fast—it was such a special moment to pause, take it all in and enjoy the moment with all our favorite people.
FAVORITE MOMENT FOR ASA: Watching Linnea come down the aisle.
BIGGEST SURPRISE:
Everyone appreciated the personalized elements of our wedding so much, especially the watercolor botanical paintings that I created for each guest!
IF YOU COULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN:
We would have given the band a song request for our first dance. We weren’t going to do one, and then last minute the groom changed his mind and decided he wanted to (which was super cute).
PIECE OF ADVICE: Start the planning process extra early because there are endless details, and it’s impossible to get them all right. I designed most of the details, but it's a lot of work on top of the other wedding needs!
HONEYMOON LOCATION: New Zealand

PIECE OF ADVICE: A friend recommended that we make a pact to stay together for the entire night, so we agreed not to leave each other’s sides during the reception and we stuck to it.

with wedding planner Emma Bogardus
Looking to create a roaring celebration for your big day that will captivate each of your guests’ attention? Emma Bogardus can help with that. From intimate weddings alongside the coast to iconic celebrations at private estates and tented venues, owner and lead planner Emma Bogardus and her team at By Emma B in Campton plan and design timeless wedding day memories for couples with a modern edge. A hopeless romantic and lover of all things pretty (especially if they are pink), Bogardus uses her expert guidance, in-depth knowledge and knack for organizing itty bitty details to make sure each event is show-stopping and irresistible, and she helps each couple create a party that never runs out of champagne.
Q: How would you describe your design style?
A: Our design style is inspired by our Scandinavian roots with stylistic edge and contemporary flair. We use texture and soft hues to assist our modern and sleek design elements that create an intimate and inviting environment. When looking at our work, you can visibly see each element supporting the overall design. Having breathability in our design is very important to our brand and allows each element to be appreciated. Being from the mountains, our approach to design always feels grounded to the settings we serve.
Q: What trends are you loving for 2024?
A: We are loving statement seating charts moving into the 2024 season! Branded and purposeful signage helps to convey the couple’s voice throughout the wedding design. We continue to love Ikebana style floral arrangements because they feel intentional and playful compared to bud vases. Lastly, one of our favor-
ite trends is the undertone of black in wedding design. Black features help the design feel modern and polished in New Hampshire settings.
“Planning a wedding is just as much an emotional process as it is a planning process. Due to the intimate nature of planning a wedding, we become very close with our couples and their families.”
Q: How can couples up their wow factor for their wedding?
A: Put your guest experience first! If you have an intentional guest experience, your day will be remembered well. These details don’t necessarily always need to be grand. The smallest
details, like ensuring there is a coat check at your winter wedding, can make a huge difference. We want the guests to remember the way they felt on our clients’ wedding day.
Q:
What is the most common mistake that couples make when planning their wedding?
A: Many clients determine their guest list first and then try to make their wedding budget fit their vision. We encourage our clients to put the overall guest experience and wedding vision first before defining the number of guests that can attend. Understanding how your wedding budget will be affected by your vision is crucial in knowing how many guests you are able to invite to your event. Don’t commit to a venue or catering team until you have the budget and estimated guest list determined.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working with engaged couples?
A: As the planning and design team, we get to be a part of
a really personal and significant experience for our couples. Planning a wedding is just as much an emotional process as it is a planning process. Due to the intimate nature of planning a wedding, we become very close with our couples and their families. It’s incredibly rewarding to see everyone enjoy the details we have taken so much time to plan with them.
Q: What are the most important vendors to book, and in what order?
A: Your wedding planner and design team should always be the first vendor you reach out to and book. The planner you choose will then help guide you through the venue booking process and remaining timeline. Our vendor booking timeline is personalized to each client depending on their priorities and engagement timeline. Once the planner and venue have been onboarded, we encourage clients to establish their priorities on the wedding day and move through booking the top priority vendors first. byemmab.com
with wedding photographer Lindsay Hackney
Lindsay Hackney is all about the finer details and intimate moments. As a photojournalistic wedding photographer, Hackney loves documenting the major events of the day and the raw, candid shots that tell the story of every couples’ big day. With each click of the shutter, she strives to create timeless photos and pieces of art that will be treasured and shared for generations to come.
Q: What is your unique style of photography?
A: I believe that you have to take on a variety of styles throughout the day in order to be a great wedding photographer! I would say that my work mostly combines photojournalism and editorial photography with an intimate, romantic, natural and rich feel. My goal is to capture the day not only through my lens, but through each couples’ as well in every color, setting and detail that makes their wedding unique.
Q: What is your opinion on doing a “first look” for photos? Why or why not?
A: While I believe this is a really personal choice and would always support my couples’ decision, there are so many benefits to doing a first look! It completely changes the experience of your day. The best thing about a first look is that it gives you so much more time both with each other and with your guests, and time is so precious on your wedding day. I’ve also seen couples choose to read their vows privately to each other or head to a new location for an expe-
rience and photos that they wouldn’t have had time for otherwise. From a photographer’s perspective, I love being able to photograph your cocktail hour instead of spending that time on formal photos—that’s so much of your wedding that I also would have missed otherwise! Cocktail hour is such a great time for candids of your guests, the light is beautiful and everyone is feeling fresh.
“ The best thing you can do when making decisions about your wedding is ask yourself, ‘Does this make us happy? Does this feel like us?’”
Q: Are there any trends that you have been seeing that you are looking forward to for 2024?
A: The thing that I keep hearing from 2024 couples is that they want candids! This is such a breath of fresh air as a photographer—we know
that you will have the best experience of your day, and we get the best results when you are going with the flow and having fun instead of focusing on a shot list or trying to control every moment.
Q:
How do you build a relationship with your couples?
A: This is so important! An engagement session is a great way for us to spend time together and get to know each other, but not every couple is interested in doing that or able to make it happen. If we’re not able to shoot together before the wedding day, I love to FaceTime or go for drinks, and I also like to be heavily involved with planning so that I know exactly what their vibe is and how I can help make them comfortable on the day of.
Q: Any final advice for the engaged couple?
A: The best thing you can do when making decisions about your wedding is ask yourself, “Does this make us happy? Does this feel like us?” There is no one way to do anything, and really ANYTHING is possible with your wedding.

It’s based in the small suburban town of Goffstown, but Apotheca Flowers’ reputation for floral artistry has spread around the country after 18 years and 70,000 wraps of flowers designed for over 400 weddings. The company’s owner and creative director—Alyssa Van Guilder—is the reason why. Bringing years of knowledge on floral design and a passion for art and all things garden to the table, she leads her team in creating custom-designed, out-of-the-box bouquets and arrangements infused with unique flowers from around the world. From petal to posy, their goal is for each design to evoke a sense of inspired beauty—magic that is amplified when shared with others on your special day.
Q: What do you love most about what you do? What inspires you?
A: I love making people happy and giving shape to emotions through color, texture and design. We love to look at our wedding designs in particular as a way to tell someone’s love story, share a bit of their personality and contribute to the creation of a tangible, shared experience.
Q: How would you describe your design style?
A: Authentic, artistic and earthy with an infusion of elegance.
Q: When should couples start thinking about florals?
A: We typically start meeting with clients 12-18 months out. Even if all of your ideas aren’t yet solidified, it’s a good idea to book vendors you love and your ideas can grow and take shape over time!
Q: Do you have a favorite type of arrangement?
A: I’m definitely infatuated with interesting color dances and earthy additions like moss, branches or bark and elements that add movement. We playfully call these additives “sticky outies and hangy downies.”
Q: Which flowers would you recommend based on time of year/season, color palette and budget?
A: Tulips, anemones and hellebore are good cool-weather options, while peonies are the beauties of May and early June. Dahlias are the queens of summer and early fall, and hydrangea are always good budget stretchers as they offer good volume for the price.
Q: What advice would you give to couples who are starting the planning process?
A: I think it’s important not to stress! In the beginning, let yourself be excited about exploring ideas and images that you connect with. Over time, you will see a pattern of what truly speaks to you. I love to ask our couples what feeling they are hoping to create
“I think it’s important not to stress! In the beginning, let yourself be excited about exploring ideas and images that you connect with.”
for themselves and their guests. Once they have that figured out, it’s a great barometer to measure ideas against.
Q: What do you wish couples knew about the floral process?
A: Flowers are beautiful expressions of emotion, and they require a lot of time, labor, and TLC throughout the process to make sure they are perfect contributors to your day! Be flexible with your florist—hire someone you connect with, make sure they understand your vision, and then give them freedom to bring it to life in the best way possible.

with cake artist Henny Bogardus
Baker and frosting enthusiast Henny Bogardus of Henny B Cakes in Littleton is here for all of life’s little moments and believes each should taste as good as they look. Growing up with her Danish grandmother’s love of the kitchen, Bogardus’ culinary passions started early and are still baked into each work of art that she creates today. Featuring intricate floral motifs, ribbons, stencil designs and more, each of her bespoke confections hit the (sweet) spot and are the perfect centerpiece to any special day.
Q: What inspires your creative process?
A: When I start to design a cake for a wedding, I carefully study the mood board and the color palette, floral design and installation pieces. I also like to look at the venue and its location—the small details play an important part of my inspiration. I use these elements to design a cake that will become a cohesive piece within the wedding brand, while also having the cake’s presence be deserving of its own moment during the reception.
Q: Describe your baking and confectionery aesthetic.
A: I believe a wedding cake is one of the most admired elements of a wedding, and guests get equally excited and even look forward to seeing it! I strive to create cakes that are elegant, timeless and remain beautiful even when you pause to admire your anniversary photos. I’m passionate about creating botanically correct flowers out of sugarpaste for my cakes. I’ve fallen in love with this artform and the intricate detail and romance it adds to my wedding cakes.
“Most guests really look forward to seeing a tiered wedding cake that also gives the reception a
bit of an added wow factor.”
Q: When should couples start thinking about their cake?
A: I think it’s always a good idea to reach out to the baker about nine months before your event. Most wedding cake designers book up quickly. Reaching out with as many details as possible, and to discuss your design and style, can be helpful for the bride and baker and ensures you are both a good fit for the big day.
Q: How would you recommend incorporating the cake into the reception timeline?
A: Many times couples say they just want small handheld desserts because they think that no one eats the cake. This tends to be true! Most guests really look forward to seeing a tiered wedding cake that also gives the reception a bit of an added wow factor. If you think about
it, when else will you be able to have a special tiered cake just for you! When the cake cutting is moved up in the reception timeline and then sent to the kitchen, each guest can enjoy a slice of wedding cake because it’s incorporated into part of the entire dinner service. This ensures every guest will enjoy a piece before dancing commences.
Q: What cake trends are you currently drawn to?
A: Trends change quickly, so it’s always hard to keep up, but I’m enjoying the Lambeth-inspired double piping on wedding cakes lately. It takes me back to the times when I was in a culinary school and we practiced piping for hours at a time! I also love the pressed flower cake trend because I can incorporate my love of flowers with my cakes.

An award-winning creative studio specializing in custom stationery and event details, AMR Design Studio (formerly AMR Calligraphy & Design) believes in pretty with a purpose, that each couples’ story deserves to be told through intricate detail, no matter how small. Scott’s background in architecture and graphic design as well as her specialties in illustration and calligraphy inspire her to create meaningful, keepsake-worthy stationery. From invitation suites to over-sized signage, she works with high-quality materials to achieve the creative vision of every couples’ dreams.
Q: How would you describe your design style? Where do you draw inspiration from?
A: My design work generally attracts couples that value understated, yet sophisticated and timeless design aesthetics. I lean into refined and modern elegance, but I enjoy the challenge of pushing the boundaries of my typical style to complement a client’s wedding design.
Q: What is it that you do that is different from other stationers?
A: Creating a process that is as collaborative as a client wants it to be is extremely important to me. I pride myself on having a process that is as organized and streamlined as possible. This gives us space to truly find joy and excitement in designing their pieces.
Q: What tips do you have for couples as they start thinking about their stationery?
A: I encourage couples to look at what they’ve pulled as a whole
“While all of the options can feel overwhelming, a stationer can help hone in on what will make the best impact for their style and budget.”
and try to pick out general themes about what they are drawn to. What about a specific image calls to them—is it the color combinations of a suite, is there a style that keeps drawing them in or is it personal touches used in a suite? Once they nail this down, it’ll help make choosing a stationer that is the right fit an easier and less stressful decision for them.
Q: What is your wedding stationery checklist, including essentials and nonessential embellishments?
A: The most essential wedding stationery item is the invitation suite. It not only serves as the first touch point to a couple’s wedding day, but it also gives their guests all of the pertinent information they will need for the event. What is included in a couple’s suite is entirely dependent on what their celebration looks like—a destination
wedding or one with multi-day events will need more informational pieces to encompass all of the logistics that guests need to know versus a one-day local wedding. While wedding websites tend to cover a lot of this information, I always recommend my couples take a general inventory of their guest list. If there are guests that may not keep up to date with their website, to include all pertinent information on their printed suite.
For nonessential embellishments, the sky is really the limit. From specialty printing like letterpress and foil-stamping, to custom card shapes, pockets, envelope liners, wax seals, ribbons of every kind, vellum wraps, leather tags, etc., there is an embellishment for every style and couple. While all of the options can feel overwhelming, a stationer can help hone in on what will make the best impact for their style and budget.
Q:
What are your favorite parts of the design process?
A: I particularly love when I deliver realistic digital mockups of a couple’s custom suite. They get to finally see what their stationery will look like, building the anticipation for when the invitations are in guests’ hands and one step closer to their big day.
Q: Why would working with a stationery designer for invitations and day-of details be a good fit for a couple?
A: DIYing stationery can quickly become a daunting task with all of the different options involved, especially when there isn’t a dedicated person guiding them through the process. Working one-on-one with a stationery designer is not only great for couples that desire an invitation suite that is truly unique to them, but can also save them time and stress and ensure their investment results in a high-quality finished product. amrdesignstudio.com
Think classic Jane Austen meets modern Bridgerton. The John Hay Estate at The Fells—a cozy New Hampshire cottage retreat on the edge of Lake Sunapee in Newbury—sets the tone for sophisticated charm with a touch of classic elegance and a tranquil backdrop to celebrate new beginnings. Sorrell Downing of Events By Sorrell and a creative team of wedding professionals craft a wedding design brimming with modern style. The seamless design stems from the lush landscape—showcased by charming details and artistic flair.
By: Elizabeth Ketcher
Creative direction and design: Events By Sorrell
Photography: Kate Preftakes Photography
“The Fells is a magical place for a wedding,” says Downing. “It has an abundance of spots for the day’s events, and it’s beautifully old-fashioned without being stuffy.” Inspired by the historic setting, Downing and her team created a simple, lighthearted and airy motif to echo the free-spirited and timeless appeal of the garden setting, while seamlessly showcasing the bride and groom. “It’s important that the team works together with a similar vision because that mood translates into every aspect of the day,” says Downing. The result is a spirit of effortless elegance captured in a storied tale of romance and style.
Inspired by the tranquil vibe of the gabled cottage and meandering gardens, Emily Herzig of Emily Herzig Floral Studio created a floral design with organic, loose overtones featuring locally grown flowers found in the New Hampshire landscape. Herzig selected varieties that “look like they were meant to be there.” Antique garden roses, creamy cosmos, peaches n’ cream dahlias, milkweed, phlox, sweet pea, purple gomphrena, blush pink ranunculus and a sprinkling of heavenly blue tweedia were layered into an abundant bridal bouquet. Colorful spring florals were repeated in the bride’s color-splashed headband.
“I’m always thinking about the dress,” says Herzig. “I wanted to create a sense that the bride’s grandmother handpicked the flowers to match.” Herzig created a billowing arrangement that mirrors the flowing ruffles on the bride’s creamy laced gown. The groom’s jacket incorporates dashes of brilliant blue florals from the bridal bouquet, and a buttery yellow lapel flower added cheer.
Downing and Herzig set the fresh tablescape within a hedgerow bordered by a mossy stone wall and arbor trimmed with pink and white garden roses. The harmonious design delights the eye with a carefree tone-on-tone palette and multiple textures and shapes. Sparkling glassware, gold-rimmed plates, a tight-fitting tablecloth and sophisticated King Louis round-backed chairs created the feel of an afternoon garden party. “Playing off the garden
with simple floral arrangements is a lovely way to accommodate the budget-conscious bride,” says Herzig. Table flowers were carefully arranged in free-flowing drifts with single tapered candles to invite conversation and unencumbered views of the gorgeous setting. Herzig also added yellow cosmos and locally grown blueberries, raspberries and lemons to transform the table into a lovely day-after brunch spot for family and friends.
Downing asked seasoned artists to bring a fresh take to The Fells’ vintage feel with a modern twist. An invitation suite of watercolor florals by El’s Cards set the initial romantic tone with a warm palette of blush, cream and rose. Jewelry artist Sinead Cleary added to the nostalgic mood with heirloom gems transformed into pearl drop earrings and an exquisite diamond-studded golden chain of pearls. Downing added a touch of whimsy to the day with the bride’s high-heeled pumps in bold florals. “Details say tons about personality,” says Downing. “They’re always a chance to add a dash of color or a touch of blue.”
Indoors, vintage wallpaper and rounded doorways framed the bride in a sentimental contrast. The spring bride blossomed in an ode to timeless charm throughout the cottage. For a formal look, the bride dressed in an easy-flowing ruffled white gown with a sheer bodice. A simple bouquet in textured white florals was accented with a single blue ribbon, all backlit and sparkling in the dining room’s natural light. Dressed in a black tuxedo with a single white flower, the groom’s formal look complements the bride. An antique tray of heirloom blooms added to the vintage mood, while personalized tags by Ellen Braley of El’s Cards anchored the tale in its unique locale.
As the sun sets on the celebration, the bride and groom led their guests to a secluded garden for champagne toasts and the piece de resistance. In a jaw-dropping display of culinary art, Grace Angulas of Graceful Baking brought the crowning touch with a towering five-tier wedding cake. Featuring popular flavors like mixed berry vanilla with champagne butter cream, Angulas’ delicacies feature locally sourced fresh ingredients. A showstopper perfectly set into the garden space, the cake featured New Hampshire wildflowers spilling over stone walls with twisting vines of handcrafted sugar flowers. Tiers of varying proportion and a muted palette in peach, dusty sage and rosy blush gave the cake a touch of movement and light. Subtle fondant embellishments echoed textured stone, while an astonishing display of sugar flowers grow from the cake’s center with the organic touch that lies at the heart of the overall wedding design. “Each flower can take over an hour to make,” says Angulas. “I used the old-style technique where the dough is rolled thin and then shaped by hand into any flower a bride wants, whether it’s in season or not.” For the finishing touch, Angulas sprinkled each flower with petal dust that captures the enchanting quality and nostalgia of the day. Best of all, each flower can become a lasting sugar bridal keepsake in a glass dome, a frame or anniversary wreath (custom crafted by Angulas).
With her own fabled career in wedding planning, Downing reveals the timeless ingredient to a joy-filled wedding day.
“It’s about the people you love coming together to celebrate love.” And what better way to toast to a thousand tomorrows than with a garden-inspired wedding for the ages? The artists’ mastery is written in every detail and in every nook and cranny at The Fells to create magical memories for the bride and groom.
