 Intimate Weddings
There’s something about a smaller wedding that can take your breath away. Perhaps it’s the space and relaxed environment they evoke, or maybe it’s the depth of connection that they allow. While we love and adore your celebrations no matter their size, it’s no secret that a more intimate gathering allows for you to focus on personalization and spend more time with friends and family. This gives you the ability to create a more meaningful experience for you and your guests. They inspire a story of authenticity and treasured memories, validating that “good things (do) come in small packages.”

Since smaller seating areas are the most popular hangout spots at any reception, why not give them their own statement moment?
Kadeema Rentals owner and creative director Kristen Daaboul recommends designing a variety of seating options, from lounge to dining to cocktail, in various areas to allow people to have conversations in various group sizes. Mix banquette seating and tables of varying size with modern, clean lined items and light colors. This will create a more welcoming living room style setup, rather than the larger monotonous styles of seating.

FAVORITE MOMENT FOR IAN: Dancing with Jenna and all of our family and friends to the last (throwback!) song of the night.
BIGGEST SURPRISE: The relief we felt after all was said and done!

PIECE OF ADVICE: Try on your complete wedding day ensemble (undergarments and all!) at least once before the big day to avoid needing to make any lastminute adjustments.

FAVORITE MOMENT FOR DON:

BIGGEST SURPRISE:

Worth EVERY Penny
A complete guide to creating your wedding budget
Weddings are rich in detail, yet every detail—from a beautifully designed floral bouquet to an intentionally crafted tablescape—comes at a cost.
We know budgeting isn’t the most glamorous or highly anticipated part of the planning process, but it’s easier with a little help and advice from some local New Hampshire wedding pros.
Written
and compiled by:
Emily Heidt
We get it. Wedding budgets can be daunting, sticker shock is real and talking about money gives everyone the “ick.” But having a clearer picture of your nuptial finances will help you get back to what you love: envisioning your dream day. We invited a few New Hampshire wedding pros to pull back the curtain on costs while uncovering the truth behind vendor details like food and floral pricing. From setting aside gratuity tips to proactively planning for unseen expenses, this in-depth guide will help you better set your expectations, and therefore, your budget.
What are a few unexpected expenses that couples don’t always anticipate?
“Decor. While some couples will hire vendors for rentals, candles, signage, etc., others attempt to DIY these items and supply them on their own. Don’t forget, even if you’re making or sourcing it yourself, there’s almost always a cost associated. Candles are a big one. So many couples come to me and say, ‘We plan to use candles instead of florals to save money.’ A few minutes of Google searching and some quick math will tell you that purchasing enough candles for every table can quickly add up to be a hefty expense.”
—Samantha Sheehy, owner and lead planner, The Perfect Match Weddings
“Guest count. If you’re inviting 150, don’t budget for 130–135, unless you feel confident that you’re going to get that RSVP return. I’ve recently had couples whose number of ‘yes’ RSVPs were much higher than they anticipated. That not only adds on extra food and drink, but extra rental items and flowers. These extra costs can add up quick, so if you’re on a tight budget, I’d recommend estimating high so you’re not scrambling after the RSVP deadline. If you end up with a lower number, then great! That extra-unexpected money could go to additional late-night bites or to beef up your floral proposal a tad (or it can go back into your wallet and be put towards your honeymoon)!” —Lindsey Mckitterick, owner and lead planner, Lindsey M. Events

“Hidden fees associated with vendors i.e., cake-cutting fees through catering if the couple sources a cake through a different baker, labor charges, etc. There are multiple delivery fees when using multiple delivery companies. Many couples don’t also realize how much the catering and bar will actually cost. A lot of couples see the ‘food and beverage minimum’ when booking and think they’ll fall around the minimum. However, this number isn’t telling you at all what your actual guest count and selections will come in at. It’s important to ask for an estimate based on your guest count and desires! When booking a band, don’t forget you need to add ceremony and cocktail hour music. Band pricing is usually an estimate for the reception only.”

Funding Your Food
with The White Apron co-owner
Liz Curcio
Food is often one of the biggest areas of a wedding budget—how can couples best be prepared for it?
Remember that catering is a luxury item. There’s a lot involved with serving highquality food with high-end service in the comfort of your home or at a venue that doesn’t already have a catering facility. Costs will always be higher with an off-premise caterer vs. choosing to be at a hotel or restaurant that has everything needed on-site. A client must consider that we’re purchasing, preparing, packing and transporting the food to a specific location, and then unloading and finishing preparing and serving from, sometimes, a remote setting. The saying “you get what you pay for” is also very true. Choosing to serve roasted chicken vs. beef tenderloin will make a difference in price, but the more food requested with high-end ingredients, the more expensive a menu will be.
What are ways you recommend saving money in your catering budget?
Any budgetary tips in this area?
Menu variations perhaps?
Consider different cuts of meat. A perfectly braised short rib will taste delicious and not cost as much as a ribeye or filet mignon. Create a menu that offers enough food with good variety, but don’t overdo it. Serve a hearty entree with sides and skip the late-night snacks.
Are there any hidden expenses in catering/food that couples don’t know about?
Work with a caterer that is completely transparent about what they offer and do not offer. For example, not all caterers include rentals. The client would be responsible for renting everything needed (china, glassware, silverware, tables, linen, etc.) with the guidance of the caterer. Because caterers will work in different venues and different locations, a kitchen tent may need to be rented for the caterer as well as ovens and other kitchen equipment, if the venue doesn’t already have these items.

How do you recommend couples best set their budget? What budgeting factors are good to keep in mind?
“Couples generally come to us with a total spend in mind. However, after we have a discussion with them about their expectations and priorities, we create a budget prediction for each category of vendor (catering, florals, stationery, music, etc.) to give them a more realistic picture of what their ideal wedding will cost. From there, we either decide to increase the budget to accommodate their expectations, or we have a conversation about reprioritizing to align with their original budget. When searching online, you may see percentage-based guidance when creating a wedding budget. For example, you may see that you should set aside a certain percent of your budget for food and beverage. While that can be a general guideline to follow, many things you read online about costs in the wedding industry are outdated. We believe in a priorities-based approach to your budget. For example, if an online article says to allocate 10% of your budget to florals, but you hate florals, you shouldn’t be spending 10% of your budget on that. Instead, maybe you allocate 5% of your budget on florals and put that remaining 5% toward increasing your catering budget (or something else that is more important to you).”
—Samantha Sheehy
PHOTOS BY Mark Spooner Photography
“I always recommend that couples make a list of the top three most important aspects of their wedding day. What do you want your guests saying when they walk away from the weekend? If it’s that the food was delicious, that the dance floor was packed and that you end up with stunning photos, then you should build your budget around those three things. Hire an amazing caterer, a killer band and a talented photographer. Pick what’s most important to you and agree to dedicate a larger portion of your budget towards those items. It’s all about tailoring a budget based on what’s important to you.”
—Lindsey Mckitterick
“Work with a planner, ask questions to vendors before booking and ask friends who’ve been married what their vendors cost, but take into consid-
eration when they were married. If it was a few years ago, don’t expect the rates to be the same. Vendors often increase their rates due to becoming more experienced in their craft, raises for themselves and their team, etc. Also take guest count into consideration. A 150-person wedding will be more expensive than a 100-person wedding, and a 150-person wedding is 1.5 times larger than the size of a 100-person wedding. This matters because of staffing, food and bar, rentals, etc.!”
—Nicole Mower
What do you recommend couples make room for in their budget?
“Couples should make room in their budget for the things that matter most to them. If food is really important to you, but you hate dessert, then your
catering budget is likely going to be higher than your dessert budget. The wedding is about the couple and should reflect their preferences. Not what is considered ‘typical.’ Couples should also make room for necessary expenses in their budget. Take a close look at your venue and see what is required for your guests to have a safe and comfortable experience from a logistics standpoint. Do you have trash cans? Bathrooms? Enough lighting for guests to safely move about the space? Does your venue have enough parking or do they require transportation for your guests? These things should be non-negotiables.”
—Samantha Sheehy
“An amazing and professional venue with a killer staff. If you’re hosting a wedding that requires a catering company, put the money into hiring an
Allocating for Your Arrangements with EH Floral owner Emily Herzig
Why are flowers so expensive?
Flowers don’t necessarily need to be expensive to be beautiful, but you may need to look away from the traditional Pinterest search bar to get inspired if you are on a shoestring budget. While a single stem may only cost a few dollars at the wholesale or retail level, wedding decorations require A LOT of stems, many different supplies to create the perfect mechanics, lots of people and lots time to get them in the perfect condition for a wedding.
Flowers are also ordered in large quantities, not by the individual stem. Each flower variety has its own special way of being properly cared for from refrigeration requirements to the transportation, from the farm or wholesale house to the florist—it’s a commodity that requires a huge commitment, long term investment, and lots of people power beyond just the hands of the farmers and florists who create them.
From large warehouses to small garage studios, the overhead from one floral design company to another can vary a lot, which is one reason the same wedding can result in very different quotes from one florist to another. More importantly, you’re also paying for expertise and experience, and also labor.
How do couples save money in their floral budget?
Instead of looking at lots of different types of flowers, consider streamlining your décor by focusing on mass blooms and less mixed varieties. In-season flowers that are grown locally or in the United States have a smaller carbon footprint and can make an impact toward cutting costs. Work with a florist that is within an hour of the venue to eliminate high travel fees for design teams. Consider also incorporating plants! Potted plants can be another great way to bring the outdoors to your wedding décor. People love plants—if you can allow guests to take the flower décor home after the wedding, you may also save on strike and clean-up costs. ehfloral.com, @ehfloral

experienced company. I promise you that it will be worth it! Additionally, make sure that taxes, service charges and any gratuities are included in your budget from the jump.”
—Lindsey Mckitterick
“Transportation is a very important consideration for overall guest experience and it’s something you need to budget for. There are economical options like school buses, yes, but if you’re looking to use a motorcoach or trolley, then you will need to plan ahead. Don’t forget to book enough shuttles for your guest count. Don’t plan on doing trips, as that means a group of guests will arrive very early and be standing around with nothing to do and watching vendors set up while the trolley loops back around to pick up other guests. If your wedding design and the energy of the day is important to you, we also highly recommend budgeting for lighting. Lighting can completely shift the mood of your event from casual dinner mingling to dance party, and it can also drastically uplevel your design by helping highlight (literally) the important details of the day.”
—Nicole Mower
What is your top budgeting tip for engaged couples?
“There are two things that engaged couples need to consider when setting their budget—guest count and expectations. These items impact budget more than anything else. For example, hosting a 50-person wedding is going to cost way less than hosting a 200person wedding. Your expectations also matter. A lot of couples will ask me, ‘Is it possible to host a wedding for $xxk?’ It’s possible to host a wedding at any price range, BUT what are your expectations of that wedding? What does the decor look like? What kind of food do you want to serve? Is there an open bar? Is there a band or a DJ? Ensuring all three of these points (budget, guest count and expectations) are balanced will be the key to pulling off a successful wedding.”
—Samantha Sheehy
“Start saving early (if you can). Set a detailed budget from the beginning that includes any taxes, service charges and gratuities so you’re prepared. Stick with your budget as you embark on the planning process!”
—Lindsey Mckitterick
“What you see on social media and Pinterest is the best of the best. Vendors are putting out their best work. It’s absolutely possible to have a beautiful and fun wedding on a lower budget; however, it’s important to manage your expectations if looking online for inspiration. I’d also argue that your guest experience is more important than your wedding design. Your guests’ experience is how you will re-live your wedding memories, so ensuring they have a great experience means that you will hear lovely stories for years on end.” —Nicole Mower
What are some ways to save money in a couples’ budget? What are the first areas to cut, workarounds or DIY options that you recommend?
“I’ll always come back to their priorities. Is there something in the budget that’s taking up space that isn’t that important to the couple? That would be an area to cut back. The fastest way to cut costs is to reduce your guest count. It can be helpful to calculate what your per guest cost is. For example, try to think beyond just the meal. What is the cost of the open bar, the napkin and chair rental, the water glass upgrade, the dessert, the stationery, the favors, etc.? Knowing the cost per guest can help you understand what the impact of adding (or reducing) the guest count by even a few people equals. It adds up quickly!”
—Samantha Sheehy
“Cut your guest count. I know that sounds harsh, but extra guests add up really quick and fewer guests means less food, drink, rentals, flowers, invites…the list goes on. While I absolutely love creating unique and new event décor items, if you’re on a budget, utilizing online resources (such as Facebook Marketplace) is an amazing way to purchase beautiful décor items for less and, in most cases, in mint condition!” —Lindsey Mckitterick
“Pre-wedding paper goods like save the dates and invitations can be done in a very low-cost manner (i.e. Minted) to then focus that money into what guests will be experiencing on the wedding day. You can also cut costs with beauty services and not covering the full bridal party and with florals by repurposing ceremony florals to the reception space.” —Nicole Mower

Tipping Your Team
with Events by Sorrell owner Sorrell Downing
“Follow the standards of everyday life when deciding who should receive gratuity at your wedding. If you would tip them at a salon or restaurant, you’ll tip them at a wedding. Take into consideration how hard and long your vendors worked to make your dream day happen. Otherwise, tipping is optional.”
Extra Tips:
• It’s the thought that counts—these are mere suggestions.
• Cash is usually the preferred method of tipping. Please place each vendor’s tip in separate and sealed envelopes.
• Don’t forget to write a review or handwritten thank you note. Your words of affirmation mean the world to your vendors and reviews allow for business growth!

In the hushed moments as the couple gets ready, all of the intricate details come into full focus. The character and charm already built into the space—the ornate mirror framed in gold, the patinaed brass candlesticks, the antique clock and the marble-tiled fireplace—all create a memorable setting for a storybook wedding.
“We wanted to create a romantic design for couples who want to stay in the moment,” says Dover. “They appreciate experiences… and want a slower, carefree timeline for their wedding.”
Before the flurry of highlyanticipated activities begins, the couple can take a deep breath as they walk hand in hand into the celebratory day they’ve been dreaming of.
A historic estate resting on 170 rolling acres in southern New Hampshire, Aldworth Manor evokes a sense of old-world charm. Originally built in Massachusetts in the early 1800s and later moved to New Hampshire in the early 1900s, the venue features stunning views of Mount Monadnock and wild sprawling meadows—all of which can be seen from its elaborate terraced garden.
Its Italian-style architecture was the initial inspiration behind this classically romantic wedding design. With its swooping archways, tall narrow windows, neutral stucco finish and carefully trimmed hedges, Aldworth Manor embodies all of the historic elegance of an Italian villa nestled in the countryside.
“It gives you the feeling of a destination wedding without needing to leave the state,” says cinematic photographer Sierra Archer of Sierra Archer Photography.
Tasked with creating a vibrant floral design late in the autumnal season, florist Allyson Rand of Clementina Floral Co. set out to sustainably forage moss, beech and maple branches to pair with many locally sourced blooms. “We try as often as possible to work within the seasons,” says Rand. “Late autumn usually requires some importing, but sourcing locally grown flowers is always our goal.”
When arranging the bridal bouquet, Rand selected yellow and Ariadne butterfly ranunculus flowers to blend with Star of Bethlehem florals and imported oncidium orchids. Hot biscuit amaranthus florals were added to look as if the bouquet was plucked from a nearby wild garden.
Rand’s favorite vignette from the day was the climbing foliage she added to the tall exterior archway, intentionally curling the branches inward to draw attention to the loggia. In Italy, the loggia is commonly used as an outdoor gallery meant to provide shade while allowing for gorgeous views, natural light and airflow—making it an ideal spot for the reception table.
Across the tablescape, Rand intentionally arranged a wild array of dahlias, roses and ranunculus florals in hues of golden mustard, toffee, yellow and bronze. Placed alongside tall white candles, the organic floral design made a bold visual statement, as did the textured beauty of the teal velvet tablecloth and mustard-yellow frayed-edge linens.
A minimal flat charger plate with tall glassware allowed other elements of the tablescape to shine. The golden flatware with crystal handles added a luxe touch to the design while pairing well with the dry ice experience.
To further delight guests as they arrive at their seats, Dover decided to incorporate dry ice into the teal-accented tablescape. Cascading across the table, the delicate swirls of dry ice created a dramatic smokey effect sure to impress guests before the first course is served.
“European weddings are all about sharing a multiplecourse dinner with your loved ones,” says Dover. “Their weddings don’t end quickly, so it’s all about creating a memorable experience from start to finish.”
For added whimsy, artist Paige Lindsey of Paige Lindsey Designs created a live painting—a growing trend among modern brides. While live painters traditionally paint a scene from the day, Lindsey takes a unique approach by painting the bridal bouquet as a keepsake for the couple. What better way to captivate guests as they enter the reception room than a live painter?
Mirroring the watercolor effect of the live painting, baker Laura Marie of Eatxactly Sweet Cafe created a true work of art with her three-tiered wedding cake. With a non-traditional flair, Marie hand-painted an intricate illustration of Aldworth Manor in varying hues of blue, accenting the low-pitched roof, windows and columns in the venue’s design.
Drawing the eye with a tangerine, ink-spill-inspired illustration on its top tier, the cake also featured wrapping greenery which blended seamlessly into the foraged branches and flowers surrounding the cake table.
With more sweets for guests to enjoy, Dover envisioned guests being served individual European desserts upon their arrival. Marie opted for a delicious lemon whipped meringue dessert topped with seasonal fruit and an edible flower.
Incorporating the rich teal from the table linens into the envelope design and accompanying ribbon, stationery artist Meghan Carey of Meghan Carey Design assembled a beautiful invitation suite for the ages. The whimsical vintage stamps and romantic handwritten calligraphy give the invitation suite a curated look.
With the allure of a vintage Victorian gown, the Clara Wedding Gown from Watters was a natural selection for Lindsay Feeney of Madeleine’s Daughter Bridal Boutique, with its volumed long sleeves and luxurious Vellan Charmeuse material. The gown looked timelessly elegant with a plunging V-neckline and a similar V-shaped back. For an hourglass shape effect, the refined dress could be cinched at the waist with an adjustable tie.
Inspired by the classic romantic design, hair and makeup artist Lauren Shidler of Brides by Lauren kept it simple by following the low bun trend, complete with curled layered bangs to beautifully frame the bride’s face. For a similar aesthetic, Shidler chose to highlight the bride’s eyes with bronze eyeshadow and bold lashes while keeping her lip color neutral.
To complete the look, jeweler Denise Graves of Natalie T. Designs handcrafted each piece from the minimalist dropdown necklace and earrings to the one-of-a-kind diamond engagement ring. Embracing the unique beauty of an irregularly cut diamond, the engagement ring was made from 18k rose gold featuring a 3-carat raw diamond that’s surrounded by a halo of brilliant-cut 2mm diamonds.
As guests savor every experience with awe and wonder, the couple can finally sneak away for a quiet moment together. Delighting in how the day unfolded, the bride can stash away her floor-length embroidered veil and trade her heels for casual flats, ready to run off into the sunset—the storybook ending she had always pictured.
