Homegrown startups get bigger through organic growth or by being acquired by a bigger rival or private equity. Big law firms merge with small ones. Corporations spin out new companies that focus on specific products or technologies. Or they swallow up smaller companies and erase those brands from the map.
The Book of Lists changes and changes again with the ebb and flow of business. The Granite State is home to roughly a dozen public companies. The diverse group includes consumer IT companies (Connection), consumer brands (Planet Fitness), aerospace manufacturers (Albany International), energy companies (Unitil Corp.) and finance firms (White Mountains Insurance Group).
Sprague Resources, once one of the state’s largest publicly traded companies, went private in 2022 after a merger. The Portsmouth-based energy and materials company, which was founded in 1870, continues to be a major employer in the state.
New Hampshire’s share of publicly traded companies is tiny compared to neighboring Massachusetts, where more than 200 public companies are headquartered, including consumer brands (TJX Companies), aerospace/ defense firms (Raytheon) and medical technology (Thermo Fisher Scientific).

While most of the top private companies in New Hampshire are state and regional players, two are firmly on the national and international stage.
Keene-based C&S Wholesale Grocers, founded in 1918 as a supplier to independent grocery stores, is one of the country’s largest food distributors.
Its family of companies provides products and services to chain, independent and military customers from 60 distribution centers nationwide. It owns and operates more than 200 grocery stores, primarily under such brands as Grand Union, Family Fare and Piggly Wiggly.
CCA Global Partners, based in Manchester, was founded in 1984 as a carpet store cooperative business. Over the years, it has expanded into 14 co-ops covering a wide variety of industries at more than 1,225 member locations, focusing on home improvement, contractors and management, business-tobusiness and recreation.

The choice by companies to stay private makes it more difficult to gather financial data about them.
“Private investments have exploded in recent years, and with that growth comes a new challenge: how to make sense of an increasingly crowded and complex private market,” says Dakota.com.
In a post on the top 10 databases for ferreting out private company data, Dakota lists its Dakota Martetplace as No. 4, ceding the three top positions to better-known players: Pitchbook, Crunchbase and PrivCo.

Optimism is returning to the private equity market, but it’s hampered by challenges that could take years to resolve, according to With Intelligence.
“After a prolonged period of higher interest rates, weak deal activity and lack of distributions, many believe the worst may be over,” With Intelligence reported in a February report. “Falling borrowing costs, a gradually reopening IPO market and improving market sentiment suggest that 2026 could mark the beginning of a more durable recovery.”

Half of the state’s largest service sector employers are health care providers, including No. 1-ranked Dartmouth Health — which is also the largest employer in New Hampshire, with more than 16,000 employees.
The dominance of health care in New Hampshire underscores the state’s demographics; we’re second only to Maine for the high median age of our residents, at 43.6.
As of 2023, people aged 65 and older comprised about 20.8% of the state’s population, according to the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute.
“Despite a large number of young people moving into the state, New Hampshire’s population is aging faster compared to the nation overall,” the Institute said in a 2024 report.
The entry of health care providers from our southern neighbor — such as Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center, which operates a facility in Salem at the Tuscan Village development — shows they are following the money.
New Hampshire boasts one of the highest median household incomes in the country, though residents with the highest incomes are concentrated in the southern part of the state and on the Seacoast — where most of the competition between health care providers is playing out.

Vail Resorts, the largest ski chain in the world, discovered this year that the tiny state of New Hampshire can throw a chunk of ice into its plans. The Colorado-based company, which owns or operates four ski areas in New Hampshire — Mount Sunapee, Attitash, Wildcat and Crotched Mountain — tried to impose what Gov. Kelly Ayotte viewed as an income tax in pass renewals for the coming season.
Vail said customers here can avoid the 3.2% charge if they buy a new pass that would limit them to the company’s New Hampshire resorts.
The squabble underscores the rise of corporate ski ownership as independent players like Ragged Mountain, which recently changed ownership, struggle to compete for customers — and employees. The state’s major ski resorts each employ hundreds of workers during the winter, and some of them have become year-round resorts, such as Loon Mountain, which repurposes its ski trails for mountain biking.

There’s more than a remote chance that workers at Fidelity’s campus in Merrimack will be reporting there, beginning in September. The company recently announced it would be ordering workers to return from the comfort of their home offices, a process the financial firm said will happen in phases in New Hampshire, Boston and two other locations.
With more than 7,900 workers in New Hampshire — more than the 6,200 based at its Boston headquarters — Fidelity is one of the state’s largest private employers. In addition to Merrimack and Boston, Fidelity sites in Kentucky and New Mexico will be the first to transition to the new policy. The company employs about 80,000 people globally.
The change will affect all New Hampshire employees except those in “customerfacing, phone-based roles,” who will work in the office one week on a four-week rotation, the company said. Managers who are at the vice president level or above at all Fidelity sites will also be required to work full-time on-site.

The average law firm celebrated 13% growth in 2025, according to the “2026 Report on the State of the U.S. Legal Market” by Thomas Reuters Institute in partnership with Georgetown Law Center on Ethics and the Legal Profession.
Technology spending was up nearly 10%, and talent costs rose 8.2% compared to 2024, the report said. Firms of various sizes and types have found ways to capitalize on the opportunities, but the factors creating those opportunities are fueled by uncertainty.
“The surge in demand that’s lifting profits to record heights stems not from economic health but from chaos — trade wars, regulatory upheaval and geopolitical tensions — all of which require constant legal navigation.”
The report also warned that the current surge by law firms may portend an industry correction:
“Today’s legal market dynamics — characterized by booming demand amid instability, runaway expenses and universal optimism — closely mirror the conditions that preceded previous industry downturns.”

New Hampshire’s manufacturing sector has been losing jobs since mid-2023, following a nationwide trend, said Greg David, assistant director at New Hampshire Employment Security.
“U.S. tariff policies have likely had modest impacts on employment in 2025 but could have greater impacts in 2026,” David said in a LinkedIn post.
“The effects on the manufacturing sector will likely be mixed, as many manufacturers struggle with higher input costs, but some are better positioned to compete with non-domestic manufacturers.”
Manufacturing employment in the state reached a post-pandemic high in June 2023 at 71,000 jobs, before declining steadily over the next two years, falling to 67,400 jobs in June 2025, a loss of 3,600 jobs (5.1%), according to “New Hampshire’s Struggling Manufacturing Sector,” an article David wrote for the state.
Some manufacturing segments performed well during the period, including electrical equipment, appliance, component and both primary and fabricated metal, and transportation equipment, he said.

Consumers have become increasingly sophisticated, not only understanding how digital systems work but learning how to game e-commerce, loyalty programs and subscriptions and make them work for them, says iterable.com.
“Consumers don’t need to understand marketing automation to know they’re inside a system. They recognize that AI and algorithms shape what they see, when they see it and what offers appear,” said the company, which offers an AI customer engagement platform, in a 2026 report.
That means it’s more difficult to tell what consumers are going to do next and how to engage with them to close the deal.
“Consumers understand what actions trigger better outcomes and use them intentionally. Whether it’s abandoning carts or stacking discounts, engagement is often designed to extract maximum value rather than signal true intent,” the report said.

What was once a niche work space for freelancers and early-stage startups has become a global market that was valued at nearly $21 billion in 2025, according to S&S Insider, which predicts the coworking spaces market will grow to nearly $82 billion by 2035.
Coworking has evolved “into a mainstream commercial real estate category that Fortune 500 corporations, financial institutions, technology companies and professional services firms are actively incorporating into their property strategies as a permanent and growing component of their total office footprint,” S&S Insider said.
The January 2025 acquisition of Industrious by CBRE Group — creating a new business segment within the world’s largest commercial real estate firm — was a watershed moment for the sector and “represents the most definitive institutional validation of coworking’s permanent place in the commercial property ecosystem.”

Newspapers have been on the decline for decades, but the note to readers that appeared on the front page of the May 30/31, 2026, edition of the New Hampshire Sunday News was startling in its directness.
Bob Singer, who previously led Merchants Auto, and Greg Wendt, an out-of-state investor, flatly stated that if not for their investment in the Union Leader, the newspaper would have shut down. While the dollar amount was not disclosed, the December 2024 deal was structured to match a $1 million loan from the New Hampshire Business Finance Authority.
“We did it because we believe the Union Leader is part of New Hampshire’s civic infrastructure — and that its survival helps hold this great state together at a time when the country feels increasingly pulled apart,” wrote the “primary owners,” who encouraged readers and advertisers to support the newspaper.
The plea from the 163-year-old newspaper comes as more than 210 counties in the United States lack a local news source, according to the 2025 “State of Local News” report by Northwestern University. Over the past 20 years, nearly 40% of all local newspapers have vanished, upended by changes in technology and reader habits.

New Hampshire Public Radio and New Hampshire PBS, both longtime staples of the Granite State’s media landscape, faced major funding losses in 2025 when Republicans in the U.S. Congress voted to claw back more than $1 billion previously allocated to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
“As a direct result, all federal funding to local NPR and PBS member stations vanished. This leaves hundreds of public media stations at risk of having to reduce or suspend operations — at a time when their services are increasingly vital to Americans with limited alternatives for local news, especially in rural areas,” according to the 2025 “State of Local News” report by Northwestern University.
For New Hampshire Public Radio, the funding cuts amounted to more than $400,000, or 6% of the station’s annual budget, NHPR reported in July 2025. The $1.3 million loss for New Hampshire PBS represented 18% of its budget, according to an NHPR story.

New Hampshire’s low tax burden makes it attractive to international companies considering expanding into the United States, says the state Department of Business and Economic Affairs, noting the state’s commitment to innovation.
Foreign direct investment in the Granite State comprises 186 companies from 24 countries across 45 industries. Business operations range from research and development to supply chain logistics, directly supporting 43,900 jobs in tech, health care, manufacturing and other sectors, says the BEA, citing major players like Lonza and BAE Systems.
“We offer a powerful combination of foreign trade zones, export assistance and business tax incentives so that international companies can hit the ground running as soon as they land in New Hampshire,” the BEA says on its website.

Expenditures by foreign direct investors to acquire, establish or expand U.S. businesses totaled $232.2 billion in 2025, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis said in June.
Expenditures increased $76.8 billion, or 49.5%, from 2024 levels.
“As in previous years, acquisitions of existing U.S. businesses accounted for most of the expenditures,” the bureau said.
Industries attracting the most investment were publishing ($50.7 billion), followed by chemicals manufacturing ($45.4 billion), and plastics and rubber products manufacturing ($19 billion). The manufacturing sector ($121.8 billion) accounted for 52.5% of total expenditures.
Employment in 2025 at newly acquired, established or expanded foreign-owned businesses in the United States was 213,100 employees.
Plastics and rubber parts manufacturing accounted for the largest number of current employees (21,800), followed by transportation equipment manufacturing (17,300), and primary and fabricated metals manufacturing (16,400).

Demand for health care workers continues to be one of the top challenges of hospitals in New Hampshire.
That has led to high vacancy rates across all hospital departments, according to a November 2025 report by the New Hampshire Hospital Association (NHHA), including nurses (16.8%), surgical technicians (17.1%) and respiratory therapists (18.4%).
“These vacancies impact hospitals’ ability to care for patients and keep beds staffed. And it dramatically increases the cost of providing care, as hospitals must turn to more expensive temporary staff to care for patients. Hospitals in New Hampshire have seen labor costs grow 36.1%, a dramatic increase since 2019 (pre-COVID).”

“Demand for health care services has held hospital occupancy rates at extraordinarily high levels, leaving little room for patients seeking care.”

According to Vermont Business Magazine, Mascoma Bank and Androscoggin Bank are uniting their parent companies into one mutual holding company.
Mascoma Bank President and CEO Clay Adams said in a press release, “This partnership allows us to build additional capacity and resilience, while maintaining the local identity and leadership that our customers and communities rely on.”
Adams will become the CEO of the new holding company, to be called ClearNorth Financial Mutual Holding Company, while Androscoggin Bank CEO Neil Kiely will be its president.
According to the press release, this is a partnership rather than an acquisition. Both banks will continue to operate with their own boards, charters and names, and customers can continue to expect the same services.

Tech spending in the banking industry is rising as financial institutions address artificial intelligence, fraud and virtual payment options, according to research firm Cornerstone Advisors, which analyzed survey data from more than 400 top executives at institutions with assets of between $250 million and $50 billion.
The 2026 report says more than 80% of bank and credit union execs remain hopeful despite regulatory and political uncertainty.

Early in 2026, trade association America’s Credit Unions Senior Economist Dawit Kebede foretold a rise in “moderate growth” of credit unions, but cites a sturdy but weakening labor market and other “uncertainties” like tariffs and political upheaval.
Kebede also projects credit union savings growth could go up about 6.5% in 2026, even if stock returns aren’t as robust as 2025.
“Stock returns are unlikely to match 2025, leading to more traditional savings patterns.
Excess COVID savings have been depleted, removing a factor that had suppressed deposit growth,” Kebede said, adding that loan growth should also be on the upswing.

JD Power, a data analytics and consumer intelligence company, says homeowner insurance premiums are cutting into profitability in the long term. According to JD Power’s 2025 U.S. Home Insurance Study, nearly half (47%) of those with homeowners’ insurance have had premium increases in the last year.
The study also found that these rising premiums are wearing on customers who want to stay loyal to their insurance company, with 43% saying the price hikes were the catalyst for switching companies.

While the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 has accelerated chip manufacturing and R&D in the U.S., the need for more workers skilled in semiconductor technology will persist.
The Semiconductor Industry Association predicts that by 2030, the industry will generate about 115,000 jobs, up from the current 345,000 jobs to about 460,000 by the end of the 2020s — a 33% growth burst. But some of those jobs — about 67,000, or 58%, will go unfilled.
Who does the engineering industry need? More than 13,000 computer scientists, more than 5,000 PhD holders, 12,300 master’s degree holders, 9,900 bachelor’s degree holders and at least 26,400 technicians.
The challenges in the semiconductor industry mirror that of other fast-growing tech industries, including AI, medical technology, cybersecurity, the Internet of Things, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, automotive and more.

Total construction spending in 2025 declined 1.4% from the previous year, according to a report by Marketplace, citing U.S. Census Bureau data. The bright spot was spending on data centers.
“Big Tech has been spending hundreds of billions of dollars to build out the infrastructure of AI, and that’s evident in the construction data. But whether it’s carrying the industry, or economic growth more broadly, is a bit hazier,” the report said.

Autodesk finds small business owners now a rapidly growing segment of the workforce
Autodesk, a software corporation that offers services and software to those in industries including architecture, media, education, construction, engineering, manufacturing and entertainment, collaborated with GlobalData to survey more than 1,800 U.S. small business owners and other professionals to get a read on their challenges and take an overall temperature.
The resulting “State of Small Business” report discovered that more people were eyeing a transition away from corporate jobs to join the growing ranks of independent workers. The report also found nearly 20% of designers and makers were mulling launching their own business in 2026.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook, jobs in the field of electrical contracting are projected to rise 9% from 2024 to 2034. This rate is faster than the average for all occupations.
The bureau also projects on average of about 81,000 openings each year, over the decade. Some of these job openings stem from the need to find new workers to replace those who either retire or who leave the field to join other occupations.

A new survey by the Associated General Contractors of America and Sage says despite the latest surge in construction of data centers and power facilities, construction contractors’ expected outlook for 2026 remains “dampened.” The report adds that factors like tariffs, continuing immigration enforcement and difficulties in finding eligible workers are adding to the dismal outlook.
“One reason for their lowered expectations is that contractors are increasingly worried about the broader economy, the possibility of a recession and the outlook for materials costs,” says Jeffrey Shoaf, the association’s chief executive officer.

For the fifth straight year, solar power is the leading source of new grid capacity, and the numbers are only going up, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.
The trade group states that in 2025, the U.S. installed 43 gigawatts of new solar capacity. By 2036, the U.S. is forecast to add 490 gigawatts (GW) of new solar capacity, with an installed capacity that could reach nearly 770 GW.
“American households and businesses of all sizes are demanding solar and storage because they deliver fast, affordable power to help meet rapidly rising demand,” said Darren Van’t Hof, interim president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association.
Michelle Davis, head of solar at Wood Mackenzie and lead author of the report, says, “Strong demand growth combined with escalating costs of new gas plants will allow solar to remain competitive, even without tax credits.”
