Slopeside Convenience at Paradise Provisions
Spirits now sold in kiosk program at Sugarbush Resort
When you’re so excited to hit the slopes that you forget to eat breakfast, or you’re looking to refuel after a day of adventures, Sugarbush Resort’s mountainside general store offers snacks, drinks and hot foods to-go. For 25 years, Paradise Provisions has been the place to grab a breakfast sandwich and coffee and a deli sandwich or pizza with a soda.
“It’s convenient, but still feels elevated,” said Keith Paxman, vice president of food and beverage for Sugarbush. “We carry grab-and-go food, prepared sandwiches and pizza, beer and wine, local products and standard grocery items.”
Now, guests can shop from a new product category through a partnership with the Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery’s (VDLL) 802Spirits kiosk program.
“The kiosk store model expands product access by placing a curated selection of top-selling, including Vermont-made, products in convenient, high-traffic locations,” said Rich Morey, director of retail operations.

Sugarbush and Killington ski areas are among the first to join the kiosk program.
Last year, Sugarbush hosted the Vermont Ski Areas Association annual event. There, Paxman talked with VDLL Commissioner Wendy Knight about what an 802Spirits licensee could look like at a resort.
“It quickly became clear that Paradise Provisions was a great fit,” Paxman said of Sugarbush’s store. “We already had the traffic, the right product mix and a guest base that would really benefit from it.”
Resort guests often come into Paradise Provisions to buy ingredients to make dinner back at their place. Being able to sell spirits makes the store more convenient for visitors.
“Guests were already coming in for beer, wine, mixers and food. Spirits were the missing piece,” Paxman said. “Now if someone is putting together dinner, hosting après or just wants something for the evening, they can do it all in one stop. It matches how people actually shop when they’re on vacation.”
Paradise Provisions aims to be a one-stop shop for the mountain’s visitors, so more time can be spent having fun rather than coordinating grocery lists and logistics.
“When people are here, they don’t want to spend time running errands,” Paxman said. “People appreciate not having to make another stop on the way in or out, or having to make the drive into the valley when they are staying up here on the mountain. It’s one of those small additions that ends up making the overall experience feel easier and more complete, and guests definitely notice that.”
One feature of the 802Spirits kiosk program is that a majority of the stock is Made in Vermont products. This can provide an opportunity for an out-of-state customer base to explore something new or bring home a souvenir spirit. It also mirrors the store’s existing Vermont product presence in the store.
“About 60% of the variety is Vermont-made, so they’re a big part of the mix,” Paxman said. “It gives guests a good opportunity to try something local alongside the more recognizable brands, and those products have been selling well.”
Tequila, bourbon and well-known vodka brands are also popular with Paradise Provisions shoppers, Paxman said.
The kiosk elevates Paradise Provisions into a more rounded shopping experience.
“Being able to grab everything in one place, especially without having to leave the resort, makes a big difference,” Paxman said. “It also helps with those last-minute decisions, whether it’s hosting friends or just upgrading the night a bit.”

Summer is the best time to take in the views
With the mountains of Vermont bursting with green again this June, it’s the perfect time to pack up a picnic lunch and find some stunning scenery.
Fortunately, there are plenty of easy-to-access lookouts to choose from. Vermont has 10 federally designated scenic byways. Plus many of the carriage roads that take you to
mountain summits are only open seasonally. So, there’s no time like the present to set out to explore.
Whether your lunch consists of intricately cut tea sandwiches, hummus and pita chips or whatever was available from the country store deli, everything tastes better served with a great view and a refreshing drink. Relax in the sun, take some photos, amble along a trail and enjoy the sights.

Hogback Mountain Marlboro
This scenic overlook off Route 9 is one of Vermont's most popular spots. A 100-mile view toward the south, east and west offers a wide expanse of rolling mountain terrain over the valley from what was once a ski area. There is a deck with picnic tables next to the Hogback Mountain Country Store, so you can leave your picnic basket at home and just grab a bite to eat there. It also is adjacent to Vermont Distillers, run by the Metcalfe family. Grab a bottle of its Blueberry Liqueur to join the Blueberry Club.

3/4 ounce Metcalfe’s Blueberry Liqueur
1 1/2 ounces gin
1/2 ounce lemon juice
1/2 ounce dry vermouth
1 egg white lemon peel for garnish

Burke Mountain

Reach the summit fire tower atop Burke Mountain for stunning 360 views via the historic toll road. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1933 to 1935, this road provides access to hiking trails, paragliding launch sites and downhill mountain-biking trails. Stop mid-way at the pavilion for the perfect picnic site with views of the Willoughby Gap. Keep in mind, the road is open seasonally and occasionally closed for private events. Nothing says summer like a fresh lemonade. This Mezcal Water has a similar refreshing sweet-and-sour vibe.
Mezcal Water (makes 6)
3/4 cup espadin mezcal
3/4 cup fresh lemon juice (preferably from Meyer lemons)
1/3 cup simple syrup
2 tablespoons fresh key lime juice
1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
3 cups sparkling water
Ice
Orange bitters
Stir together espadín mezcal, lemon juice, simple syrup, key lime juice and fine sea salt in a large pitcher.
Stir in sparkling water and ice cubes.
Pour mixture evenly into 6 ice-filled glasses; top each with a dash of orange bitters.
Mount Mansfield

Weave your way to the ledge of Mount Mansfield along the historic toll road, where stunning views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains spread across the horizon. The road up Mount Mansfield is 4.5 miles of beautiful nature views. Park at 3,850 feet, relax and take in the sights with a picnic. Road is open seasonally.
Smoked Watermelon Agua Fresca
Ice
3 ounces agua fresca
4 ounces sparkling water or seltzer, preferably chilled
1 lime wheel
Smoked sea salt and smoked paprika, for dusting
Fill a Collins glass or mason jar with ice. Add 3 ounces agua fresca, then top with 4 ounces sparkling water or seltzer. Garnish with a lime wheel dusted with smoked sea salt and smoked paprika.
Agua Fresca
2 pounds seedless watermelon
1 medium lime
2 teaspoons smoked sea salt
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
Cut 2 pounds seedless watermelon into chunks, juice 1 medium lime and place both in a blender. Add 2 teaspoons smoked sea salt and 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, and blend until smooth. Pour through a fine-mesh strainer set over a bowl.
Mt. Ascutney Windsor
The 3.7-mile Mount Ascutney Parkway might not take you to the summit, but at 2,400 feet elevation, the ride still provides great scenery. The state park at the base also provides picnicking opportunities with tables and a pavilion available to day-use visitors and campers. Also a CCC project, Mount Ascutney State Park was one of the first Vermont State Parks, which originally consisted of the summit road, the stone toilet buildings, campsites 1-18 and the ranger’s quarters. The original stonework is all of Ascutney granite.
Guava Goddess (makes 8)
1/2 cup orgeat (or amaretto)
1 cup lime juice
1 1/2 cups guava juice
1 cup aperol
2 cups tequila
1 cup water
Dehydrated lime wheels (for garnish)
Add orgeat, lime juice, guava juice, aperol, tequila and water into a bowl. Stir to combine.
Pour mixture into flip-top glass jars and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
When serving, pour into a rocks glass over fresh ice and garnish with a dehydrated lime wheel.

The 1.7-acre park located on the west side of Spear Street is known for its scenic overlook with views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains. It’s a great spot to watch the sunset or take a walk on a paved path. Interpretative signage can help you identify some of the summits in view. The area is popular with birders, and you might see some pollinators visiting the gardens. Since 2017, Barr Hill has celebrated Bee’s Knees Week to fundraise for nonprofit partners working to protect and restore pollinator habitats. National Pollinator Week will be held June 22 to 28.
Blackberry Mint Bee’s Knees
2 ounces Barr Hill Gin
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
3/4 ounce honey syrup
6-7 fresh blackberries
6-7 fresh mint leaves

Gently muddle honey syrup, fresh blackberries and mint leaves in a shaking tin. Add lemon juice, ice and gin. Shake, and then double strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with fresh blackberries and mint.
Quechee Gorge

On Dewey’s Mill Road, along the Quechee Gorge Trail there is a woodsy picnic area. The trail itself is a 1.3 mile out-and-back loop to a ledge overlooking the gorge. Take a look down at the Ottauquechee River flowing 165 feet below. Not far from the picnic area is the Quechee Gorge Visitor’s Center run by the Hartford Area Chamber of Commerce; there you’ll find public restrooms, historical displays and light refreshments.
Orange Wine Sangria (makes 8)
1 750 ml bottle orange wine
1/8 cup honey syrup
1/2 cup brandy
1 cup pear juice
1 medium pear, diced
1 orange, sliced
4 cardamom pods
2 tarragon sprigs
Club soda (as needed)
Toast cardamom pods in a small pan on medium heat until fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside.
Roughly dice pear and slice the orange. Add to a large pitcher along with honey syrup, brandy, pear juice and the entire bottle of wine.
Add the cooled toasted spices, along with the tarragon sprigs and allow sangria to chill in the refrigerator at least 6 hours.
To serve, remove the cardamom pods, and pour drink and fruit bits into your glass of choice over ice. Top with club soda.
You can make a honey syrup by mixing a 2:1 ratio of warm water and honey.
Mount Equinox

At 5.2 miles, Skyline Drive up Mount Equinox is the longest, privately owned, paved toll road in the country. You’ll ascend to 3,248 feet elevation on your journey with stunning views of New York, New England and Canada along the way. There are several vistas and picnic areas along the drive, which winds upward through four distinct forest types. The road is open seasonally and has an admission fee.
Sky Juice (pitcher batch)
4 cups London dry gin
4 cups coconut water
14 ounces condensed milk
1/3 nutmeg pod, freshly grated, plus more for garnish
Add the gin, coconut water and condensed milk into a pitcher and stir well.
Grate 1/3 of the fresh nutmeg pod over the top and stir again.
Add each serving into a shaker with ice and shake until well chilled.
Strain into a footed pilsner glass over fresh ice.
Garnish each glass with freshly grated nutmeg.

Carson "Kit" Davidson created a Japanese-style garden near Hubbardton’s Mt. Zion, which has been maintained by the state since his death in 2016. Davidson cared deeply about preserving natural beauty for public enjoyment. Over 46 years, he blazed trails, protected wildflower meadows and created a Japanese garden. He welcomed visitors and encouraged conservation, public access and community involvement. The trail to the Japanese garden is rugged and there are no facilities at the site, but there are plenty of grassy areas to sit, enjoy the sights and have a bite to eat. Sliced cucumber
