MEET THE DISTILLER

“We are deeply rooted in the region and what tequila represents. We see it as a gift from Mexico to the world.”
— LEÓN BAÑUELOS JR.

says that

León Bañuelos Jr.
El Mexicano's Blanco centers the taste of cooked agave with notes of citrus.

Pride and heart in every bottle

BAÑUELOS FAMILY SHARES THE GIFT OF EL MEXICANO

s a child, León Bañuelos Jr. recalls tagging along with his father or grandfather as they walked the agave fields, playing hide-and-seek with his brothers and sister among towers of barrel-aged tequila, and thinking that the roller mills shredding cooked agave were monstrous.

“I remember them being much, much bigger,” said León. “But I think my kids today, they feel the same way as I did when I was four or five years old.”

Pride and craftsmanship in tequila-making are the legacy of the Bañuelos family. Don Felix Bañuelos started Cazadores distillery with his son León Bañuelos Sr., a maestro tequilero. A while after selling that brand, the third generation, including León, launched El Mexicano Tequila, a 100% family-owned and -operated Mexican company.

“We are deeply rooted in the region and what tequila represents,” León said. “We see it as a gift from Mexico to the world.”

Every bottle features its “Norma Oficial Mexicana” (NOM) 1588,

which indicates the legitimacy and quality of the distillery in Arandas.

As the eldest grandchild, León said he was immersed in the process at an early age.

“My first chemistry project when I was in seventh or eighth grade was a whole distillation process,” he said. “For me, it was really easy to do chemistry and physics, trying to translate it into what goes on in tequila, and applying that.”

While some might feel stifled by the weight of responsibility for a family business, for León, it’s a labor of love and pride.

“Tequila, it's something that I love,” he said. “You put a little piece of your heart into every bottle.”

That craftsmanship and pride extend to all parts of the company from the agave growers in the field to those in the distillery who cook, crush and ferment the agave.

“They feel proud that their agave is going to be a well-made tequila,” he said.

With just blue agave, water and yeast as ingredients, El Mexicano’s tequila stands out due to the care that goes into processing, which they’ve perfected during more than 50 years of practice.

“We get to apply all this knowledge that has been passed down from my grandfather and my father and all the wonderful people who have worked with us throughout the years,” León said.

El Mexicano’s philosophy on tequila production includes a focus on the little details, like the quality of the agave and a longer fermentation period, while not making too many adjustments during distilling.

“We see the distillation as like when you have the raw diamond: You just need to make the right cuts and the stone will be bright, shiny and beautiful,” León said. “We build everything through the seven years of agave maturing in the lands, 24 hours of cooking, and 8 to 10 days of fermentation. So when it comes to the distillation, we have already built up everything that we need.”

This lighter touch allows the terroir of the agave to shine through.

“El Mexicano is a tequila that is really a testament to, with simplicity and good craftsmanship, you can build something extraordinary,” León said.

León sees the distillery’s focus on craftsmanship, local ingredients and deep roots as something that parallels Vermonters’ values.

“For us, authenticity is at its core,” he said. The business, now led by León and younger brother Willy, is supported by other Bañuelos family members as well. Their father, who is a maestro tequilero with more than 40 years of experience, has his signature on the front label. Their mother, Teresa, handles the hospitality side of the business, welcoming visitors to Hacienda El Mexicano to tour the distillery and celebrate classic Mexican culture. Youngest brother Max is just getting started in the business, said León, and learning about producing and building relationships with the agave growers. Their sister, Tesy, is a member of the company’s board.

In partnership with Foley Family Wines & Spirits, El Mexicano is now available in more than 10,000 points of distribution in the United

States, allowing more people to enjoy it.

“We could be making this fabulous tequila and keep it for ourselves, but we don’t,” León said. “We have a really nice quality product for people to enjoy.”

With El Mexicano Blanco, there’s no wrong way to drink. This clear, unaged spirit is 40% alcohol by volume with a taste that centers the cooked agave with notes of sweet citrus fruits and an herbal finish that provides balance.

“I will say, I love sipping it,” León said. “At the same time, the versatility of the profile that we have for El Mexicano Blanco is really nice for cocktails.”

León said he feels that tequila in Mexican culture is an anytime, anyone type of spirit, whether you're celebrating, feeling sad or just enjoying the day with family.

“It's really a crowd-pleaser, but it also has a little depth,” León said. “For me, the most important part for somebody who is trying it for the first time is to remember that it's now your tequila. It's something as a family that we want to share. And when you share something with somebody, it's a gift. It's yours to enjoy.”

León Sr. samples tequila that's been barrel-aged. El Mexicano is well known for its reposado.

GEARING UP FOR VERMONT'S ATV SEASON

April showers may bring May flowers, but in New England, they also bring mud. This harbinger of spring gets people itching to be back outdoors, particularly those with off-highway recreational vehicles (OHRVs) looking to hit the trail, find new vistas and roar through the woods.

However, when trails are still mucky, it’s best to stay off. Riding on soft terrain can ruin the trails and damage the nearby forest ecosystems. With many trails built on private property, damaging them can lead to access restrictions and shorten the season for oth ers. In Vermont, most trails don’t open before May 15, though that can vary based on land ownership, municipal rules and weather impact.

While riders wait for trails to open officially, they can prepare for the season ahead by scoping out their options. With more than 20 clubs part of VASA, each region offers a different kind of ride. VASA trails are also loaded into the Polaris Ride Command GPS tool for easier navigation. Now is the time to make sure your vehicle is registered and your membership with VASA is up-to-date.

Vermont has more than 1,000 miles of OHRV trails statewide, comprised of a mix of private land and public connectors. Almost all the trails are maintained by vol-
