Keeping our valued volunteers informed

GM’s Corner

This month I want to begin with a special thank you to the folks that work back in our receiving area. If you’ve been back in the space at 41, you’ll know just how large, open and ‘cold letting in’ the overhead rolling doors are – and they almost always need to stay open no matter the weather. This means that, even when working inside, the elements and cold come in to play – cold, damp and occasionally snow blowing in! Outside, the wind often makes the snow swirl and pile up. Through all this bad weather, freezing cold and blasting snow, our receiving volunteers continue to serve our donors with a smile, a friendly conversation and real gratitude. No matter what the conditions are, they overcome and make all of our donors feel welcomed! Thank you to each of you for working so hard through this – it is appreciated!

A couple of housekeeping notes. As a reminder if the store is going to be closed due to weather, we will send out an email as early as possible in the morning. You can also check our website and social media, but these are often a bit delayed in getting posted. If you have changed emails, or if you are aware that you don’t receive them from us, please let us know so we can make the change to ensure you get them.

I do want to pass along a thank you to all of you from one of our customers, whom I ran into in the community. She noticed the MCC Thrift logo on my grey sweater and asked if I knew the thrift shop. She then told me how much she appreciated the shop. She told me that during a trying time in her life she was able to come in and browse, feel welcomed and engage in conversation with volunteers and staff on her terms. She indicated that it was her safe place for a time.

We don’t often get to hear things like that, but please know that aside from the impact of the broader work of MCC, we also have a very real positive effect in our communities. Every task we do, every smile we give can make a real difference in the lives of people. I thank you for everything that you do, and thank you for helping build such a community and atmosphere in everything we do!

More than a meal: walking together in Queenston

MCC Ontario has recently partnered with The Queenston Neighbours, a local neighbourhood association in an area of St. Catharines known for its dilapidated buildings and homeless encampments. For Tim Shields, MCC Ontario’s new community mobilizer, the question of how to not to “do for” but to “walk with” neighbours in need has shaped his life for years, and led to some surprising decisions for him and his family. From community events to food security projects, learn what MCC is doing to build trust and empower neighbours. Read the whole story here: mcc.org/our-stories/more-meal-walking-together-queenston
