Keeping our valued volunteers informed
GM’s Corner
As we move into February, the shorter days can sometimes make it a challenge to stay bright and cheerful, but here at MCC Thrift & Gift, there are so many ways we can support one another. February is often called “kindness season,” and we can spread the love with simple gestures: a smile, a high-five, or a few encouraging words can make a big difference, even after a busy or challenging shift. It only takes a small act to bring a big smile, and we thank you for spreading the love this month—and always. If January is any indication, we’ll also need to take care of ourselves to stay warm and safe in February. Dressing in layers, protecting your hands and ears, and moving carefully on icy surfaces are all important when spending time outdoors. Don’t forget to keep your immune system strong by staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and giving yourself a chance to recharge so that you can continue to enjoy volunteering and enjoy the many areas of life you love.

Thank you for showing up with compassion every shift, even in the cold. Your well-being truly matters to us!
Congratulations to our Favourite Cookie Designers!

More than a meal: walking together in Queenston
MCC Ontario has recently partnered with The Queenston Neighbours, a local neighbourhood association in an area of St. Catharines known for its dilapidated buildings and homeless encampments. For Tim Shields, MCC Ontario’s new community mobilizer, the question of how to not to “do for” but to “walk with” neighbours in need has shaped his life for years, and led to some surprising decisions for him and his family. From community events to food security projects, learn what MCC is doing to build trust and empower neighbours. Read the whole story here: mcc.org/our-stories/more-meal-walking-together-queenston

Queenston residents and MCC volunteers came together to create cards and assemble 151 school kits together for a Christmas event.

Volunteer Spotlight
What are our volunteers up to….. ?
Emma, a volunteer who has worked with us since 2018 as a sorting assistant in our donation centre, is also involved in a business called “The Blossoming Bookshop.” This is currently an online used bookstore whose goal is to spread joy with its carefully curated book selections and cozy reading experience.
I first encountered “The Blossoming Bookshop” at a pop-up Christmas Market and now follow it on Facebook. Emma and her sister, Tessa, own this business and work to find ways to encourage reading. In February, as part of a subscription package, they offer a “Blossoming Book Box” which includes a great new paperback, a sweet treat, a cozy drink and Bookish surprises for the

ultimate reading moment. They will also be popping up at their own booth at the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival. The Blossoming Bookshop is on Facebook, Instagram and online at: theblossomingbookshop.com
We love seeing the great work our volunteers are doing outside the shop.

Chrissy’s Corner
This year marks an exciting transition for me as I move from full-time veggie farming into the role of Volunteer Engagement Manager at Elmira Thrift & Gift. One lesson farming taught me well is that many hands make light work, and I see that truth lived out every day in our store. I have been truly blown away by the dedication, care, and generosity of our volunteer community—your commitment makes a real and meaningful difference. I deeply value the experience and knowledge each of you bring and warmly welcome your ideas and suggestions. I am eager to grow alongside this incredible team and hope you feel comfortable approaching me anytime. I truly believe that no task is too small and that, together, all of our efforts help MCC carry out important work in our communities and around the world.
