CLUB NEWS A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season filled with lots of family and friends! Wow, where to begin? Your generosity in support of the Employee Holiday Fund was amazing and so very much appreciated. It was truly a special day to be able to present a bonus to each staff member on behalf of the members whom they serve each and every day. Your generosity in your support of the Angel Tree Program was incredible, as we were able to provide presents and put smiles on the faces of sixty-five children. In early December, we loaded up a van, a truck, and a car to deliver the presents to the Salvation Army. Such a wonderful experience, thanks to your generosity and kindness. The generosity of the WSMGA continues to make a huge difference in our community. In addition to donating

over $17,000 to the Soup Kitchen, the group served over 300 people Thanksgiving dinner. A pretty special mission and a remarkable group of members. Each day we are reminded of how fortunate we are to work around such incredible members who care deeply about the staff here and those in our community. As always, thank you for a great 2025! We look forward to an even better 2026! Michael Thomas, General Manager

CONGRATULATIONS ERICA BRITT Anybody who knows Erica Britt knows her energy and enthusiasm can light up any room. On December 6, when she arrived at work, she immediately noticed something was different. There was a sign with a big red bow in front of her office. The Golf Learning Center, also known as The Studio, was officially renamed The Erica Britt Development Center! Totally shocked, her tears, her smile, and her gratitude instantly made a cold, overcast day feel sunny and warm. It was a welldeserved honor for Erica, who has poured her heart and soul into making this facility one of a kind for the past twelve years. Well done, and congratulations Erica!

FITNESS GROUP FITNESS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS: Athletic Strength & Stretch(with Greg): An athletic yoga class is the perfect blend of strength, endurance, and focus, pushing you to your limits while keeping the mood light and fun. Led by an instructor who knows how to challenge you without taking things too seriously, this class is designed to build muscle, improve flexibility, and enhance mental resilience. Expect to hold poses longer, repeat sequences for intensity, and maybe even feel your legs shake in a deep Warrior pose—all with plenty of encouragement (and the occasional well-timed joke) to keep you motivated. Safety and alignment cues are emphasized to ensure you’re working hard without risking injury, making this a great option for both seasoned yogis and newcomers looking to build strength in a supportive environment. Beyond the physical benefits, this class fosters a strong sense of community. Whether you’re here to push your limits or just enjoy a good sweat with like minded people, the shared experience of challenge and triumph brings everyone together. Conversations flow before and after class, creating an opportunity to connect with others on their yoga journey. And that satisfying post-class soreness? Consider it a badge of honor—proof that you showed up, worked hard, and got stronger in the process. Gentle & Slow-Paced Yoga (with Greg): A gentle yoga class is the perfect antidote to a stressful day, offering a slow-paced, accessible practice that welcomes all levels. Led by an instructor who believes that yoga should be equal parts mindful movement and good-natured fun, the class encourages participants to embrace the practice without taking themselves too seriously. You might find yourself chuckling during a wobbly balance pose or hearing a lighthearted joke about tight hamstrings—because, let’s be honest, we all have them. Safety and alignment are consistently cued to help prevent injuries, ensuring that even those new to yoga feel confident and supported in each posture. Whether you're here to stretch, breathe, or just enjoy an hour of self-care, this class creates a space where everyone can move at their own pace. Beyond the physical practice, this class offers a sense of connection and belonging. Whether you’re deepening your yoga journey or simply looking for a friendly place to meet others, the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere makes it easy to strike up a conversation before or after class. Sharing a laugh during a pose or a knowing smile when the instructor cracks a joke fosters a sense of community that extends beyond the mat. It’s not just about stretching—it’s about finding a moment of joy, easing tension (both physical and mental), and leaving with a lighter heart. Go with the Flow Yoga (with Heather): A faster paced yoga practice that moves with a bit more rhythm and the asanas paired with the breath. Modifications are taught and encouraged. *Please bring a mat and preferably a block and strap Fitter Faster (with Heather): This class is held outdoors using equipment and body weight to challenge your entire body. This total body workout is a great way to condition for other sports, increase stamina and endurance, stop cellular aging, build muscle strength, and promote weight loss. We will incorporate intervals and Tabata training. Fast paced and fun but you can work at your own pace. YOGALATIES (with Heather): Yogalaties is a type of exercise inspired by yoga and Pilates, as its name suggests. It is said to harness the physical and mental benefits of both practices. It will incorporate yoga postures, gentle movement sequences, breath work, core work, and supportive guided relaxation for increased awareness. All levels welcomed. Chair Yoga (with Greg): Chair yoga is a gentle, accessible way to stretch, strengthen, and refocus—perfect for anyone who wants the benefits of yoga without the stress of getting up and down from the floor. Led by an instructor who keeps things lighthearted and fun, this class offers safe, supported movements that improve flexibility, mobility, and balance. With a focus on proper alignment and mindful breathing, each pose is adapted to meet individual needs, making it a great option for those recovering from injury or simply looking for a lower-impact practice. Beyond the physical benefits, this class is a wonderful way to connect with others in a welcoming and supportive space. Whether you’re deepening your yoga journey or just looking for a friendly place to move and breathe, you’ll find a sense of community here. Sharing smiles, laughs, and moments of progress with others makes this more than just a class—it’s a chance to feel good, both physically and socially. ZUMBA (with Kirby): Join the party with Zumba — the ultimate dance-fitness experience! This high-energy class combines Latin-inspired rhythms with easy-to-follow dance moves for a fun, full-body workout. 🎯 TENNIS SHOP STRATEGY CORNER Tennis Tip: Build Better Rally Patterns Most players lose points because they hit “interesting” shots instead of reliable ones. Tighten the basics: 1. Play High Percentage: Deep cross-court is still the smartest ball in the game. 2. Attack Short Balls Only: Don’t force offense from neutral positions. 3. Win With Margins: Aim three feet inside the lines. Winners are a byproduct, not the goal.

👉 Try this: Make every rally ball land past the service line during your next hit. Your consistency jumps immediately. Pickleball Tip: Control the Middle First

The middle decides more points than any sideline highlight shot. 1. Own the Middle: If the ball comes down the center, assume it’s yours unless your partner calls it. 2. Close the Gap: Shrink the space between you and your partner — that’s where most errors live. 3. Attack Body + Middle: Safest target, highest margin.

👉 Try this: In your next match, target 70% of drives and dinks to the middle. Watch how many free points show up. Thank You & See You on the Courts We’re looking forward to a strong start to the 2026 season. Bundle up, come play, and stay active — the cold isn’t stopping us, and it shouldn’t stop you either. Let’s make the first two months of the year count.

TEE IT UP WELCOME TO THE 2026 GOLF SEASON First, we sincerely hope you and your family enjoyed a wonderful holiday season! It’s hard to believe we’re already welcoming 2026—2025 seemed to fly by, and now we’re excited to kick off another fantastic year of golf. As you’ll see in the details below, we’ve kept most of our traditional dates for this year’s major tournaments. However, we have made one important adjustment. The Men’s and Ladies’ Club Championships will now take place in late October, and the Senior Club Championship has been moved from July to August. We hope these changes provide more comfortable playing conditions and an even better competitive experience. We’re also pleased to announce the return of a very special event—the BECAUSE WE CARE One-Day Men’s Member-Guest. After its successful introduction last year, we’re thrilled to bring it back. This unique tournament raises funds for our We Care Charity event held each fall, supporting military families throughout North Carolina. It’s a meaningful day of camaraderie and competition that you won’t want to miss. Additional schedules—including WLGA tournaments, WSMGA tournaments, Junior Golf Camp dates, junior tournament details, and our charity and corporate event lineup—will be shared in the March and April newsletters. The Golf Shop Staff is energized and enthusiastic about the 2026 Golf Calendar, and we can’t wait to get the season underway. Here’s to a great year of golf, community, and fun! FROM THE GREENS WHY CAN’T WE PLAY ON FROZEN GREENS? When a green freezes, both the plants and underlying soil becomes one solid unit. As the sun warms the surface, the upper layer thaws while the lower portion containing the root mass remains frozen. At this time, any movement on the green can sever the roots from the plants. Additionally, trying to fix a ball mark can tear turf apart. Any damage during the winter months will not heal until we warm up in the spring. The time it takes for greens to fully thaw varies depending on individual microclimates. Greens in low-lying or shaded areas, such as holes 4, 7, and 18, tend to freeze deeper and take longer to thaw due to colder conditions and the low angles of the winter sun. After a long cold stretch with temperatures in the mid to low 20s, greens in shaded areas may take several days of warmer weather to fully thaw. To do all we can to help get the course open, we place pins in sunnier locations that thaw first and we’ll open with some frozen pockets remaining as long as they are small and away from play. Most of all we want to prevent damage to the greens. Thank you for your patience and understanding during these times and let’s hope Mother Nature cooperates Todd Lawrence, CGCS, Director of Golf Course Maintenance

WHAT’S NEW IN THE NEW YEAR? COURSE IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS IN 2026 Cobblestone Golf Club: Beginning in Fall 2025, Cobblestone Golf Club will undergo a major renovation on the Black 9 course, rebuilding all bunkers with Capillary Concrete liners and new sand, improving drainage, and installing new concrete cart paths with select rerouting and tree removal. The same work will follow on the Garnet 9 course, with completion targeted for Spring 2026. During construction, the nine holes under renovation will be closed. The Water’s Edge Country Club: After Memorial Day, The Water’s Edge will close the course to convert all bentgrass fairways and tees to Bermudagrass, with a 10–12 week grow-in and a planned reopening by Labor Day. The club will also begin practice facility upgrades, including a redesigned first hole, a relocated putting green, and an expanded driving range tee near the clubhouse. These enhancements will elevate the overall golf experience and position the club for long-term success.
