Mark and Ann first met on July 1, 2018 at a neighbor’s dock during a summer gathering hosted by Mike and Jane Turner. It seemed like just another relaxed day on the water, surrounded by friends and family. What they didn’t realize at the time was that there had been a little behind-thescenes planning the night before. Ann’s daughter, Brittany, and Kathryn Turner’s daughter, Brittany, had teamed up with a mission to introduce them With a little help from Jason and Kathryn, everything was set in motion without Mark and Ann having a clue
That “chance” meeting turned out to be anything but accidental What started as a simple introduction on a dock became the beginning of something truly special proof that sometimes the best moments are the ones quietly orchestrated by the people who know us best
Years later, Mark and Ann came full circle and said “I do” on the beach in Naples, Florida, on February 28, 2026, with the ocean as their backdrop and a lifetime ahead of them.

The Redman Family
Mark and Melanie Redman currently reside in Dallas, Texas, with their son, Ryan, and their Golden Retriever, Lola Having visited Smith Mountain Lake several times, they quickly fell in love with the area and the charm of The Water’s Edge community Both Mark and Melanie have strong ties to the East Coast. Melanie’s family is located in the Raleigh-Durham area, while Mark’s family resides in the Richmond area. In addition, they have close friends who own the neighboring property at Smith Mountain Lake, making their connection to the area even more meaningful
Mark is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and went on to serve as an Apache pilot in the U S Army He currently works as a Captain for a major airline and is actively pursuing a base transfer to the Washington, D C area Melanie is a graduate of Meredith College, where she earned a degree in Accounting and Finance, and she currently works as a Project Manager for Oracle.
The Redman family is excited to have secured their place at The Water’s Edge and at Smith Mountain Lake They are looking forward to embracing lake life and spending quality time with family and friends
They also look forward to building lasting friendships and creating wonderful memories within the community

Spring is in the air, the dogwoods are in full bloom, and golf season has arrived! Our staff has been extremely busy getting the course in the best shape possible
The Poa annua is also in full bloom this time of year. We’ve made multiple applications across greens, tees, and fairways to help keep it under control. This is a management process, not complete removal, so we’ll continue these applications throughout the season to keep it at bay.
Tree Removal: This project is nearly complete and should be wrapped up by mid-May The three-plus weeks of snow cover put us slightly behind schedule, but nearly all earmarked trees have been taken down Any trees within grassy areas have been stump-ground, filled with top-soil, and reseeded
Upcoming Construction: Our first construction meeting with all partners went well, and the plan is now set The course will close the Tuesday after Memorial Day That week we’ll kill off tees and fairways, followed by aerification Construction and sprigging are scheduled to begin the first week of June, with a target reopening around Labor Day, weather permitting
Course Etiquette & Member Assistance - Your help on the course makes a huge difference!
Ball Marks: Please repair yours and one more each time you’re on the greens

Divots: Since we’re still playing on cool-season grasses, replace your divots when possible If the chunk fits well, step it down firmly If it breaks apart, replace what you can and use sand to fill the rest then smooth it with your foot This helps protect mower reels and ensures a cleaner cut
Bunkers: We’re keeping rakes in the bunkers After use, rake your area and then place the rake so the handle rests on the grass, perpendicular to the edge, with the head in about 4–5 feet. This helps preserve our equipment and ensures fair play.
Safety Reminder: The course is for golf only. Please no walking, running, or other activities especially as traffic increases this season. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and continued support. We’re looking forward to a fantastic 2026 season and can’t wait to see you out on the course!

April was a busy month for golf! We held several new events, had the kick-off days for WELGA and MGA, and had fitting days with Callaway and Titleist Quick congratulations to Ron Willard II for winning the first-ever Masters Par 3 Shootout!
In the month of May our flagship event of the year, Men’s Member-Guest, will be held May 14-16. During this time, the golf course, practice facilities and clubhouse will be shut down for tournament participants and spouses only.
We will continue to open the golf course on Mondays with 1pm shotgun starts
Finally, the golf course and practice facilities will close down on Tuesday, May 26, for the renovation to begin As a reminder, we are converting the tees and the fairways from a bent grass to a Bermuda grass This will greatly help the condition of the golf course during the summer months Our goal is to be open by Labor Day We will be sending updates throughout the summer on the progress of the renovation
With the course being closed, we have set up several reciprocal options for our golfing members Locally we have set up playing options at Chatmoss CC, Hidden Valley CC, Roanoke CC and Waterfront CC Golf members may also play any of the other McConnell Golf courses for a rate of a cart fee (depending on membership classification there is a limit on number of rounds that you may play at other MCG courses) We do ask that if you’d like to play a local course or another McConnell course, please contact the golf shop FIRST and we will make the reservation for you.

As we head into the warmer months, the barn is coming to life in the best way! With longer days, greener pastures, and plenty of time in the saddle, we are excited to kick off a busy and fun-filled season here at The Water’s Edge Equestrian Center
If you’ve been by the barn recently, you may have noticed a few new faces! This past March, we welcomed a new boarder horse named Ivy, bringing us to a total of 8 boarders. In April, the barn also purchased a new program horse, Fisher. Fisher is a 7-year-old Mustang who has spent the past several years working with beginner riders. She is a beautiful and dependable addition to our herd, and we are very excited for everyone to meet her. With the addition of Ivy and Fisher, we now have a total of 17 horses at the barn.
With a full barn and summer camps quickly approaching, we kindly ask that all rides be scheduled at least two days in advance Additionally, please keep in mind that many of our long-standing program horses are reaching retirement age We are actively working to bring in new horses to support our program during this transition During this time, there may be limited availability particularly for group rides of four or more riders as we prioritize the health, comfort, and well-being of our horses We truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to serve you while putting our horses first
As part of our camp preparations this year, all parents will be required to complete a Camp Registration and Information Packet This packet includes important details such as emergency contact information, medical history, allergies, and any other relevant information that will help our staff properly care for your child while they are at the barn. The packet will be included in your camp confirmation email and must be returned prior to your child’s first day of camp. You may email it back, bring a printed copy on the first day, or stop by the barn to pick one up at your convenience.
We still have a few spots available for our Summer Horse Camp, so it’s not too late to sign up! Your child won’t want to miss out on all the fun, learning, and unforgettable memories that come with a summer at the barn We look forward to a wonderful season ahead and can’t wait to see you at the barn!

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring and remembering the men and women who died while serving in the U S military It began after the Civil War as a way to commemorate fallen soldiers and has since become a day of national remembrance for all who have lost their lives in military service
While many people associate it with the unofficial start of summer barbecues, gatherings, and time with family its true purpose is more reflective Traditions include visiting cemeteries, placing flags on graves, attending parades, and observing a moment of silence
Please pause to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country—their sacrifice will never be forgotten
Join us for our ‘Wild Wild West’ Murder Mystery Party! This will be an interactive murder mystery event where you will play a character, solve clues, and interrogate all of the suspects. Light food included. Bar for purchase. Must have a minimum of 25 people. Sign up by May 16.

Mike Moore, Executive Chef at Wilson Country Club

“I love Pistachio as much as I love cookies The pistachio is the well-traveled, smart & cool nut that sits in the back of the class, quiet and barely noticed He doesn't require too much attention like the fancy almond He doesn't have the thick Southern accent like the pecan, nor is he hard to crack and most desirable by squirrels like the walnut The pistachio is calm and collected in all scenarios, naturally green, and widely known to have a variety of health benefits, such as healthy fats, fiber, and protein Unlike all the other nuts in the class, he also comes with a reputation of paramount street cred
Ingredients
1 Cup Shelled Pistachio Nuts
½ Cup Sugar
1 Large Egg ½ Cup Unsalted Butter
Directions
1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2 Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with nonstick pan spray
3 In a food processor, chop all Pistachios until they are a fine crumb Reserve 1 tablespoon for topping if desired
4.In a mixing bowl, beat sugar and egg until fluffy.
5.Add butter (cut in small pieces) and extracts.
6 Pour in chopped Pistachios, flour and baking powder and mix until well combined
7 Using a small 3oz scoop, add dough in scoops onto greased baking sheet and top with remaining pistachio crumb
8.Bake for 10-12 minutes @ 350-degrees Fahrenheit until brown.
9.Allow cookies to cool and remove onto cooling rack.

Sean O’Neill, Executive Chef at Treyburn Country Club
“As a chef and a father, I refused to let my kid have a limited palate As long as she tried at least three bites of any food I put in front of her to give her palate time to adjust, I would believe her if she did or didn’t like something This for the most part has worked out well, and she eats all kinds of foods now One thing she never liked was jelly or jam A kid that won’t eat the classic PB&J? I tried so many things to get her to try jams in different ways This cookie was one of those ways A little extra sweetness in a peanut butter cookie I enjoyed them a lot and held onto the recipe, my kid Well, she still hates jellies and jams ” - Sean O’Neill
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup jam, such as strawberry or raspberry
1 In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt until combined In a large bowl, using a handheld mixer on medium-high speed, beat butter and peanut butter until smooth. Add brown sugar and granulated sugar and beat until creamy. Add egg and vanilla and beat until combined Add dry ingredients and beat on medium speed until just combined
2 Using a medium (about 2 tablespoons) cookie scoop, scoop out dough Press your thumb into the center to create a deep hole Spoon 1 scant teaspoon jam into hole Gently press dough back together and roll into a ball; the jam might start leaking out, and that’s okay Arrange on 2 parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing 2" apart.
3.Refrigerate until chilled, about 30 minutes.
4 Preheat conventional oven to 350° or convection oven with low fan to 325° Bake cookies until edges are just set and centers are slightly soft, about 12 minutes
