TEE IT UP

Dear Members,

As summer comes to an end and we welcome the crisp, cool air of fall, I wanted to take a moment to reflect and share a few updates. The upcoming fall season is truly my favorite the changing leaves, cooler mornings, and the sense of new energy make fall a special season at the Club

My first summer here has been full of learning and not just about golf! I was quickly introduced to the importance of having quality bug spray on hand, thanks to our persistent little friends, the gnats. But all jokes aside, it’s been an extremely hot summer, one of the hottest on record, and I am thankful for how well our maintenance crew has taken care of our course!

Both of our summer Junior Golf Camps were filled with excitement, laughter, and noticeable improvement from all participants A big congratulations to our Junior Club Champions - Jackson King (Boys 15–18), Liam King (Boys 13–14), Brady Howell (Boys 11–12), and Addison Lovett (Girls 11–13)!

Your hard work, dedication, and love for the game have truly paid off

Looking ahead, Fall brings some of the most anticipated events of the year. We’ll kick off the season with the return of our Operation36 Fall Academy, helping our junior players continue their development Our staff is also gearing up for a busy and exciting stretch, including the crowning of all our Club Champions and closing out the season with our biggest and most exciting event the Men’s Member-Guest!

Thank you all for making this summer so memorable. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead and hope to see you out on the course this Fall!

Fairways and Greens, Thomas Walker, Director of Golf

This summer has been a brutal one for certain! A recent article from the NC State Extension office (http://turfpathology ces ncsu edu) states that we are on pace to have the hottest summer on record I am glad that we are getting closer to the end of summer each day One thing I will say is that I doubled down this year on fungicides, and I am glad about it Up until last year we were limited on fungicides that were effective on Pythium root rot Serata was released last year, and I started to implement it into my program The heat wave that we experienced the last week in July proved that it is worth its price tag While the greens do have a few spots that got beat up on them this summer, we did not experience any of the widespread thinning that I have seen pictures of and heard stories about throughout this area It does also help that I doubled down on the Pythium Root Rot fungicides this summer from about the first of July or so until recently Instead of spraying a fungicide for it every 14 days, I sprayed every 7 days While this was expensive, it is better than the alternative of thinning grass on the greens and bare spots Overall, I would have to say that our greens have done very well this summer.

I'd like to thank everyone for their patience with the application that we made on #2 fairway to control the goosegrass I only treated about two-thirds of the fairway The results were phenomenal! It took about a week, but I would venture to say that we got near 100% control The collars around the greens are another issue because we are limited on chemistries that will control the goosegrass but not run onto the greens when we have substantial rain events, which are typical this time of year However, I sprayed some trials with a chemical that is effective in killing goosegrass, and it shows some promise The downside to this is that it knocks down the Bermudagrass just like the application that was made on #2 fairway The reason I did not move forward with a blanket application around the greens is I wanted to make sure that the Bermuda would in fact recover and see what the recovery time on that would look like So far it does show some promise that it may be a viable candidate for use next year

I hope that all of you are dealing well with the heat, and I look forward to seeing you around the course!

Regards,

COURTSIDE NEWS

Hard to believe we are into the later part of the year Even harder to believe I have been at the club for a year already; it has sure flown by Tennis & pickleball has seen growth at a rapid rate over the course of the year, but we are not done yet. We are continuing to expand our clinic offerings with more doubles clinics throughout the week as well as more junior clinics for all ages

We had a fantastic turnout for all three

of our summer camps this year! Despite the heat, the energy on the courts was high, and the players had a great time developing their skills and making new friends Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make each camp a success! Special thanks to our volunteers for all their hard work

Junior team tennis in its first season at Wilson CC was also a great success. Our 18U team advanced through the Downeast local league competition and competed at the NC Tennis State Championships in Winston-Salem Playing teams much more experienced and older than us from Cary and Raleigh, our young team fought hard and came away with much-needed experience for future seasons. Next spring we hope to have more teams at the club with, hopefully, the addition of 14U and 12U teams.

See you on the courts, Jake McCartney Director of Tennis

COOKIES OF THE MONTH

September: Spicy Wheat Cookie

Jason Daniels, Executive Chef at Providence Country Club

“I started making this cookie for my daughter’s 6th birthday. We were having her party at Carter Mountain The apple orchard is located in the hills of Virginia, and I wanted to have the perfect cookie for the day The crispy wheat shortbread with heavy-hitting seasonal spice... plain and simple, was just the ticket Needless to say, nibbling cookies and drinking warm cider on a crisp fall day is a heartwarming endeavor I hope that they make you smile as I am while reminiscing about this time past ” - Jason Daniels

October: Pumpkin Chocolate Chip

Michael Monahan, Executive Chef at the Country Club of Asheville

“This cookie is a celebration of autumn’s arrival, blending the rich, spiced flavors of pumpkin with the indulgent sweetness of chocolate chips Pumpkin is synonymous with fall, evoking cozy memories of harvest time and seasonal festivities, while chocolate adds a touch of decadence that complements the pumpkin’s earthy sweetness As the leaves turn and the weather cools, this cookie is the perfect treat to enjoy after a satisfying lunch, bringing a taste of autumn right to your table ” - Michael Monahan
