CLUB UPDATE

As I piece together this article, it feels hard to believe we're already turning the page toward the second half of summer. It feels like just yesterday we were opening the pool for Memorial Day Weekend and looking ahead to another busy season at Sedgefield Now, with a successful Sedgefield Cup Member-Guest Tournament behind us, the Wyndham Championship right around the corner, and our Centennial Gala on the horizon, there is an incredible amount of energy and excitement throughout the Club.

Summer got off to a fantastic start with our Memorial Day Pool Party. It was great to see so many families enjoying the holiday together, reconnecting with friends, and kicking off the season poolside. The opening of our new pool bar has also been a tremendous success Whether you're stopping by for a cold drink, spending the afternoon with family, or simply enjoying the sunshine, the pool continues to be one of the most vibrant gathering places at the Club We hope you'll continue to join us throughout the remainder of the summer as we make the most of these warm days together

I'd also like to take a moment to recognize one of the newest members of our summer team Lyndsey Patten joins us from the University of South Carolina (Go Gamecocks!) and has already made a tremendous impact supporting our Catering operations. Working alongside Travis and the Food and Beverage team, Lyndsey has jumped into every challenge with enthusiasm and professionalism. During Wyndham Week, she will also help lead a group of fellow Gamecock students traveling from Columbia to support tournament operations throughout the Club. We are fortunate to have Lyndsey with us this summer and grateful for the work she is doing throughout Sedgefield

Speaking of summer programming, our camps continue to be a tremendous success. Under the leadership of Nicole Thompson, our Activities and Communications Director, this summer we're welcoming children from across the membership to golf camp, tennis camps, pickleball camp, and a variety of other themed camp weeks The energy these young members bring to the Club each day is contagious, and we're excited to continue offering these opportunities throughout July and August

One of the highlights of the summer thus far was hosting the Sedgefield Cup Member-Guest Tournament Events like these remind us what makes Sedgefield so special Yes, there is great golf, but there is also something much bigger happening Friendships are strengthened, new relationships are formed, and memories are created that often last far longer than anyone's final scorecard

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Eric Ferguson and our entire Golf Professional Staff for their leadership and hard work in executing another outstanding event I'd also like to recognize Chad Cromer and our Golf Course Maintenance team for their commitment to producing such great playing conditions on the course And thank you to Travis Huddleston, Austin Pendergraft, and Chef Joaquin Campos for leading our Food and Beverage team throughout the weekend Hosting a successful MemberGuest of that size with so many moving parts takes a tremendous team effort, and they delivered in every way

As we move into July, there is certainly no shortage of reasons to be excited We will kick off the month with what promises to be an incredible Independence Day celebration at the pool as we commemorate America's 250th anniversary Some of my favorite memories growing up involve Fourth of July gatherings with family and friends, and I know many of you share similar traditions We look forward to creating a few more memories together here at Sedgefield as we celebrate our nation's birthday with a great day at the Club

The fun continues throughout the month with our Adult Luau on July 11 and Movie at the Pool on July 18. We also continue to host Family Nights every Thursday evening in the dining room From Pastabilities and Fried Chicken Night to Prime Rib Night, these evenings have quickly become a favorite opportunity for families and friends to gather around the table and enjoy great food and even better company If you haven't joined us yet, we hope you'll make plans to spend a Thursday evening with us this summer

As our pool remains one of the busiest destinations on property, I also want to thank everyone for helping us maintain the welcoming and family-friendly environment that defines Sedgefield. We ask all members and guests to be mindful of pool rules regarding attire, behavior, and supervision of children Creating a safe, respectful, and enjoyable atmosphere is a shared responsibility, and we appreciate your partnership in helping us provide a great experience for everyone.

The Wyndham Championship returns August 6 through August 9, and preparations are already well underway. Many of you have noticed the work taking place on the golf course as we prepare for one of the premier events on the PGA TOUR schedule. In the coming weeks, you'll begin to see additional activity around the Club as tournament infrastructure starts to take shape and the familiar transformation begins

Before tournament week arrives, we invite everyone to join us on July 31 for our Wyndham Kickoff Party This event will be an opportunity to celebrate with fellow members, build excitement for the tournament, and enjoy one final gathering before the Club shifts into Wyndham mode

While Wyndham Week is one of the biggest weeks of our year, it is far from the finish line Once the tournament concludes, we will continue building momentum with fall programming, family events, dining experiences, and many exciting opportunities for members to enjoy their Club

On October 17, we will host the Centennial Gala, marking 100 years of Sedgefield Country Club. This Roaring Twenties-themed evening will feature exceptional food, entertainment, drinks, dancing, and the opportunity to celebrate a century of memories with fellow members. Save-the-Date information has already been distributed, and ticket sales will be available online in the coming weeks

One hundred years is a remarkable milestone Very few clubs have the opportunity to celebrate a centennial, and even fewer have done so while remaining such a vibrant and thriving community We are all fortunate to be part of Sedgefield's story during this historic year As we celebrate the achievements, traditions, and people who built this Club over the past century, I hope we also take pride in helping shape what the next hundred years will become

Thank you for being part of the Sedgefield family Whether you're spending time at the pool, enjoying dinner with friends, competing in tournaments, attending camp, or simply stopping by to enjoy the Club, you help make Sedgefield the special place it is. We look forward to seeing you throughout the remainder of the summer and celebrating many more memorable moments together

See you out there,

What a fantastic way to kick off the summer! We’ve just wrapped up another Men’s Member-Guest Tournament, and this year’s event was one of the largest and most successful yet Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, and helped make the week so memorable. FOOD & BEVERAGE

A NOTE FROM YOUR DINING SERVICES MANAGER

FOOD & BEVERAGE UPDATE

As we continue celebrating another exciting season at Sedgefield Country Club, I wanted to take a moment to share a few updates from our Food & Beverage team and thank our membership for the tremendous support you have shown throughout the year.

THURSDAY NIGHTS ARE FAMILY NIGHTS

Thursday evenings have quickly become a favorite gathering time for many of our members and their families Moving forward, Thursday nights will remain dedicated to family dining, with a buffet featured each week. While our popular Pastabilities buffet is here to stay, we are expanding our offerings throughout the month to provide even more variety and excitement

Recent buffet themes have included Prime Rib Night, Fried Chicken Night, and a Southern Comfort Food Buffet, all of which have been met with an overwhelmingly positive response. Our culinary team is committed to creating memorable dining experiences, and we look forward to introducing additional themes and offerings in the months ahead

To make Thursday evenings even more welcoming for families, the entire main level of the clubhouse including the Red Fox, which is typically reserved for guests 21 and older will be open to all ages on Thursday nights

POOL BAR SUCCESS

We are also excited about the successful launch of our new Pool Bar during its inaugural season. The atmosphere created on the pool patio has been a wonderful addition to the club experience, and it has been rewarding to see so many members enjoying the space While we continue to make adjustments and enhancements to better serve both our staff and membership, the response thus far has been extremely encouraging

RED FOX CONTINUES TO RAISE THE BAR

The Red Fox recently introduced a new menu, and the feedback has been outstanding. Christina’s creativity and talent continue to shine through her cocktail program, bringing fresh ideas, unique flavors, and elevated experiences to our members Her dedication to the craft of mixology has helped make the Red Fox a destination within the club.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Red Fox and main dining room will be open to families, featuring our Pastabilities buffet twice monthly and rotating themed buffets on the other Thursdays. Please note, à la carte service off of our main dining room menu is not available Thursday evenings. Our Red Fox Bar Menu will be available

One of our primary goals is to continue evolving based on member feedback Many of our most successful events, programs, and enhancements have originated from member suggestions, and we remain committed to listening and finding new ways to elevate the club experience

As we approach our 100th Anniversary celebration, we are excited about the opportunities ahead and grateful for your continued support Thank you for helping make this season such a success Please continue sharing your ideas, feedback, and suggestions we value your input and look forward to creating an even better experience for everyone

We look forward to seeing you around the club

SEDGEFIELD CENTENNIAL: A CLUB AND A CONFERENCE + AN UNDERDOG STORY FROM THE U.S. OPEN

As part of Sedgefield Country Club’s 100th anniversary celebration, the Sedgefield Centennial video series looks back on the milestones, stories, and people that have shaped the club into one of North Carolina’s most historic golf venues

The series continues with its second installment, an exclusive interview featuring retired ACC Commissioner and Sedgefield member John Swofford. In the conversation, Swofford reflects on the ACC’s founding at the Sedgefield Inn and the enduring connection between the conference and the club

The third installment turns to one of Sedgefield’s most remarkable chapters when the club’s own head golf professional, Tony Manero, stunned the golf world by capturing the 1936 U S Open title on one of the sport’s biggest stages

Dive into the rich history at Sedgefield and view the entire series at YouTube com/@McConnellGolf

FORMER MCCONNELL GOLF SCHOLAR

CALEB SURRATT EARNS SPOT IN FIRST U.S. OPEN

Former McConnell Golf scholar Caleb Surratt will make his major championship debut at the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. Surratt secured his spot in golf’s national championship through final qualifying at Dallas Athletic Club in Dallas, Texas, where he posted rounds of 70 and 69 before prevailing in a six-man playoff for the final berth. He birdied the first playoff hole to punch his ticket to one of the game’s biggest stages

Many McConnell Golf members have followed Surratt’s journey for years

A standout junior golfer from Charlotte with ties to Providence Country Club, he went on to star at the University of Tennessee, earning first-team All-America honors and winning the SEC individual championship He turned professional in 2024 and now competes for Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team on LIV Golf.

Surratt’s U.S. Open appearance marks another milestone in a career filled with accomplishments, but for those who watched him develop as a young player through the McConnell Golf scholarship program, it is especially rewarding to see him competing alongside the best players in the world McConnell Golf congratulates Caleb on reaching his first U S Open and wishes him the best of luck at Shinnecock Hills

The warm summer temperatures have arrived, and our Bermudagrass turf is thriving! Aerification went very smoothly this spring, and everything has healed up nicely With the turf now growing aggressively, we've begun implementing our summer cultural practices to ensure the best possible playing conditions.

Each Monday while the course is closed, we’ll be lightly verti-grooming the greens, followed by a light topdressing of fine sand This process helps minimize grain, improves ball roll, and enhances the firmness of the putting surfaces

During this time of year, we’ll also be lightly topdressing tees and fairway landing zones to dilute thatch and create smoother, firmer playing surfaces.

Summer also means the Wyndham Championship is just around the corner. Tournament build-out will already be underway by the time you read this. As in years past, the same trusted contractor will be handling the setup They’ve consistently done a great job being respectful of your golf experience while performing their work That said, if you ever notice any issues during your round, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly I’ll be happy to connect with the lead foreman and address any concerns

I hope to see many of you out on the course enjoying the summer weather and great conditions!

Sincerely,

Summer is here and I am happy with the conditions that we have been able to provide so far this year The big news is definitely the drought. I have worked on a golf course my entire adult life and I have never seen a drought like this Here at the Cardinal we are doing better than some other courses that do not have the same water supply as us We are able to pull water out of the creek to fill our irrigation ponds. There are a lot of courses that have had to stop watering the course, and are only watering greens because they are already running very low on water.

Unless we get put on a mandated water restriction we will keep watering the course. We are still very dry and are in need of rain, but right now we are not in fear of running out of water

Some of you may have heard but we recently hired Brady Tucker as our new Assistant Superintendent Brady has worked on a golf course for several years He recently finished up an internship at Quail Hollow, as well as getting his Turfgrass Management degree from The University of Georgia. Brady is already proving to be a great addition to our team.

The agronomy team has just finished up our closed week for course aerification. The greens were aerified again and are recovering very quickly Tees were core aerified, and fairways were aerified with a solid tine

As we are now into summer, we are in full maintenance mode We will continue to water and fertilize the newly sodded areas to improve the turf quality. We will also continue with a few small sod projects around course to improve the condition of the course For the most part, our focus is on maintaining the course and providing great playing conditions daily. I hope everyone has a great summer of golf, and I hope to see you on the course.

Sincerely,

TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

The weather is hot, golf season is in full swing, and activity around the club continues to increase as we head into July Over the past several weeks, we have seen a significant uptick in member and guest activity as school is officially out and pool season is underway

As we move closer to July, excitement surrounding the Wyndham Championship continues to build. We are now just over four weeks away from the start of this year’s tournament

With preparations well underway, I would like to remind everyone that the club and golf course are becoming increasingly busy as crews continue their work in advance of the championship

Please keep in mind that each week leading up to the event, additional workers and vendors will be on property We ask that everyone use extra caution while driving through and parking around the club Additionally, please be mindful of children who may be traveling between the clubhouse and pool area and may not always be paying close attention to traffic

Most importantly, I hope each of you have a wonderful Independence Day holiday as we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary We look forward to seeing you at the club throughout the summer and during another exciting Wyndham Championship season

Thank You, Eric Ferguson, PGA Director of Golf

FERG’S FIXES

YOUR WEDGE EXPECTATIONS MIGHT BE TOO HIGH

(BY LOU STAGNER)

I got a great question from a reader this week His name is Chuck, he's an 8 handicap, and he reached out about wedge shots from ~100 yards He feels like he should be hitting them closer than he actually does. His exact words were he'd expect “nearly 100% of those shots to finish inside 30 feet”

This is not the first time I have received a question like this about wedge proximity And the answer usually surprises people

THE DATA

To show Chuck that hitting 100% of shots inside 30 feet is beyond unreasonable for an 8 handicap, I pulled wedge proximity data for shots from the fairway between 90 and 110 yards for a men’s Division 1 golf team Over 900 total shots across 16 players Again, these are tournament tested elite division 1 college golfers

Here's how those shots shook out:

Read that bottom row again 27% of wedge shots from 90-110 yards finished outside 30 feet That's more than 1 in 4

D1 college golfers, not weekend warriors that sit behind a desk all week and rarely practice

MY THOUGHTS

If elite college players are missing outside 30 feet more than a quarter of the time, an 8 handicap is going to miss outside 30 feet more often than that That's not a failure That's the game This is not me telling you to lower the bar. You should absolutely be trying to hit every shot where you want it. Always. But managing your expectations doesn't mean settling. It means understanding what "good" actually looks like so you stop beating yourself up over results that are completely normal Next time you leave a wedge 35 feet from the hole and feel like you blew it, remember this table. You probably didn't

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Summer here we come!

The Cardinal has been a busy place over the last two months The weather was fantastic and the golf course has been incredible. We are seeing some improvements to the facility with the addition of new vanities in all of the restrooms, new covered seating areas on the patio and a new bag drop addition to make your experience with our staff a bit more professional Our plan is to continue to make improvements as we continue through the summer and the remainder of the year The Cardinal has also seen growth to the membership as we have welcomed more than 25 new families to our club It’s a wonderful feeling seeing all the excitement around the club and people enjoying their experience at the Cardinal.

One big reason the Cardinal is seeing such an explosion in growth is due to the team we have assembled at the club I’d like to take a moment to recognize two individuals that have really impacted the experience at the club First, our chef, Sarah Young Sarah has been with us for 7 years and is a solo rock star in the kitchen Mrs Young has grown leaps and bounds in her role and has continued to deliver wonderful food to everyone who comes in The second member is Brenna Young Brenna was stolen from Sedgefield to give our tavern experience a shot in the arm. This young lady has truly embraced the member experience and made a huge impact on our food and beverage operations These two make a great team and our club is grateful to have them on your side. If you haven’t stopped in to see Brenna and/or check our Sarah’s cooking, why haven’t you? That is the question Thank you ladies for being superstars for the Cardinal

Speaking of growth, our Gilsen Men’s Member/Member saw its largest field in years. We had a wonderful three days on the course and were treated to some incredible weather and some better food and drinks. After 3 rounds of golf and a shootout that needed 1 extra hole, the team of Chris Matteo and Zack Smith prevailed as this year’s champions. Congratulations to Chris and Zach, and thank you to each and every member/spouse who came out to enjoy the weekend. Looking forward to next year already

Another reason for the continued growth is simple, you the member. Without all of the support and the kindness you have shown to the events and to the new member joining the club, we would not be the best golf club in the Triad. People want to be where people are having fun, and I do believe the Cardinal is having fun Thank you for trusting myself and our team with your time and commitment

As we turn the calendar to the 2nd half of 2026, we have some great events coming up so please pencil these on your calendar:

Parent/Child Tournament – Sunday, July 12

Couples Golf – Friday, July 23 – Hibachi Night

The Borjes – Saturday, July 24 – One Day Gross Member/Member

Dye Cup – Men’s Member/Guest – August 20-22

Senior and Legends Club Championship – September 19 & 20

Lady Bird Invitational – Thursday and Friday, September 24 & 25

Have a great summer We look forward to seeing you around the Cardinal real soon Remember, play fast. Play bad faster!

FITNESS NEWS

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF FITNESS

Make This Your Summer of Fitness

Maintaining a fitness routine during the summer can be a challenge. It’s easy to get distracted during the summer months when our routines are sporadic, kids are out of school and our priorities change Between the summer pool parties and vacations that lead to less time for fitness to the hot weather making it more challenging to cool off while our muscles work overtime, it’s easy to let fitness fall to the wayside Try these easy tips to help you stay motivated during the summer months:

1. Utilize equipment around the house when you can’t make it to the gym.

While lifting and using the fitness equipment at your gym might be your go-to routine, sometimes your schedule doesn’t allow you to make it there during the summer Here are some great alternatives to using weights in the gym that you can do at home with easy household items!

If you like to do deadlifts in the gym with a barbell, grab a towel and use it for a leg curl to activate your hamstrings When doing a deadlift, your hamstrings and glute muscles are challenged, similar to the towel leg curl variation To do this, first lay on your back and place your heels, with your feet flexed on a towel placed on a hard floor Next, use resistance to bring your heels (still on the towel) to your glutes to activate your hamstrings.

2. Add in different fitness activities during the summer months to make it more convenient.

Use the summer months to teach your family the benefits of staying active and participating in a fitness routine While the sun stays out longer, incorporate family walks after dinner or go to a playground nearby and play a game of soccer or baseball This is also a great time to hit the pool and have a family lap swim competition

3. Make exercise a social event by joining or starting a fitness group. A great way to keep up with a fitness routine is doing it with others and making it a social event Members in the fitness group can also act as accountability partners to ensure that everyone is participating and staying true to their fitness goals

4. Shorten your regular fitness routine by completing a HIIT workout

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is a great way to still get in a workout if you only have a short window to do so. Whether it’s between picking up a little one from summer camp or before you get ready for a friend’s wedding, completing a higher-intensity workout in a shorter period is perfect for fitting exercise into a busy summer schedule.

I look forward to seeing you at the fitness center.
