One clear takeaway from the survey was how much you appreciate Kids Club offerings during events that are more adult-focused. You’ll see many more dates for Kids Club on the calendar this year, especially for those events where we want parents to have the opportunity to spend quality time together. Be sure to keep an eye on our Events Calendar, where Kids Club will be listed alongside some of our club events. In addition to all of the fun events we’re planning based on your feedback, we are also planning a large Centennial celebration later in 2026. We’re still in the process of finalizing the date, but we will be sure to share that with all our members when we do.

MEMBERSHIP WELCOME NEW SEDGEFIELD MEMBERS Mark & Wendy Halsey; children Justin (27), Kate (25) and Tucker (21) – Please welcome the Halseys to the Sedgefield family! As one of the newest residents of Sedgefield, they have already met many of their wonderful neighbors and fellow club members. Mark was born in California and Wendy in Hawaii. The Halseys have lived many places, and are looking forward to finally settling down. “After moving more than a dozen times over the past 28 years, we are permanently putting down roots in Sedgefield,” says Mark. After nearly 28 years as a naval officer, Wendy retired from active duty and now works at Wake Forest University as the VP of Facilities. When not at the club or working, the family enjoys going to the beach and traveling. At the club, they are looking forward to meeting new people, good golf and good social gatherings. We welcome the Halseys to Sedgefield! Thomas & Lindsay Hennigan; daughter Scottie Anne (20 months) – As one of our newest families at Sedgefield, please welcome the Hennigans. Referred to join the club by current member Todd Gillenwater, the Hennigans reside in Greensboro where Thomas is in heavy equipment sales. A graduate of Appalachian State, Thomas is also a former NFL player. When looking for a club to join, they were primarily interested in a community with good people and good golf. We think they’ve found the right place! We welcome the Hennigans to the Sedgefield family! Mark and Rebecca Salehar – We welcome the Salehars, as they are excited to join Sedgefield and become part of its vibrant community. Rebecca, a Greensboro native, and Mark, originally from Chicago, recently returned to the area after spending the past 15 years living in Dubai. Mark serves as the CFO for an online retailer and Rebecca is a dedicated volunteer with a non-profit organization serving refugees. In their spare time, Rebecca is an accomplished artist, while Mark is the drummer for a local Winston-based band, Spindle45. Both look forward to participating in the many events SCC offers throughout the year. We welcome the Salehars to the Sedgefield family!
David & Sara Strader; son Wyatt (11) – Please join us in welcoming the Straders to the Sedgefield family. Born in Tulsa, OK, David was raised in Summerfield, NC, and is a graduate of NC State – Go Pack! David is a Sales Manager with Ferguson Industrial and travels the Southeast, while Sara’s title is “Strader Family Manager”. When not working or golfing, David enjoys fly fishing, family time, traveling and hiking. “Our family is looking forward to participating in club events, getting to know the other members, and improving dad’s golf game,” says David. We welcome the Straders to the club!

WELCOME NEW CARDINAL MEMBERS PonJola & Rosalyn Coney – we welcome the Coneys to the Cardinal! Born and raised in McComb, MS, PonJola is a retired OB/Gyn doctor of 40 years, and Rosalyn is a retired academic administrator. In a club, they are looking for a nice facility, friendly members and staff, a challenging and fun golf course, and great service. We think they found the right place. We welcome PonJola and Rosalyn to the Cardinal family!
Justin and Millie Smith; children Grayson (18), Finley (15) & Everett (12) – As one of our newest families, the Smiths are excited to be part of the community. Justin is a Greensboro native, and he and Millie moved back in 2005 after attending NC State and living in Cary. They have three children: Grayson, a senior at Cornerstone Charter Academy; Finley, a sophomore and Everett, a 7th grader, both at The Covenant School. Justin is the Managing Partner of Smith Partners Wealth Management, an independent, fee-only wealth management firm. Millie is the Home Day teacher for their younger two kids and the Women’s High School basketball coach for TCS. A fun local connection: Justin’s family is responsible for bringing the Lighted Christmas Balls to Greensboro. In fact, Justin launched the first one high into the trees with a potato gun while in high school (you can see his TED Talk about it online). The Smiths joined The Cardinal for its convenience and welcoming atmosphere, just 10 minutes from home and perfect for hitting balls or getting in a quick nine holes. They were referred by fellow new member Charlie Heritage. We welcome the Smith family to the club!
Jeff and Becca Whitworth; children Eli (17), Nate (14), and Lyla (12). Please join us in welcoming the Whitworth family to Cardinal! Jeff and Becca, Greensboro natives, are excited to join the community with their three children, Eli, Nate & Lyla. Jeff works for Microsoft and also coaches Grimsley High School’s men’s lacrosse team. Becca enjoys volunteering at the Moses Cone Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Jeff is returning to golf after a long break and looks forward to introducing the kids to the game. We welcome the Whitworths to the Cardinal family!

24 SATURDAY Join Us for an Exciting Cooking Competition! Get ready for a culinary showdown as we go head-to-head with two other clubs in a fun and flavorful competition! The event will feature delicious food, lively music, and a chance to experience and vote on some incredible culinary creations. Each team will prepare bite-sized portions of an appetizer, entrée, and dessert, giving everyone the perfect taste of their skills. Chefs will have full creative control over their menus, allowing them to showcase their culinary flair. Beverages will also be available for purchase. We’re thrilled to have liquor and wine representatives on-site to showcase their products—perfect for sampling cocktails crafted with their spirits or exploring unique wines from various distributors. The event will only be open to 150 guests. Sedgefield members will have the opportunity to sign up for the event first, followed by participants from the other McConnell properties involved in the competition so everyone can cheer on their chefs.

“This year we proudly celebrate a meaningful milestone: 10 years of the Sedgefield Angel Tree Helpers spreading Christmas joy throughout our community. Over the past decade, the generosity of Sedgefield members has truly changed lives. This year, we have raised more than $165,000 and provided gifts to 700 Angels, including over 150 bicycles and 200 tablets. Each child also received a warm winter jacket. What started as a small act of kindness has grown into a sold-out, two-day event featuring golf, hole sponsorships, a festive after-party, and the ever-popular Putting for Booze. Most importantly, every dollar raised goes directly to the children. We are incredibly thankful for our generous members; the club for donating food at the turn; the anonymous donors who provided food for the after-party; the Mulligans for the festive music; and the Moonshine Mamas, who keep the spirit alive with delicious food and their famous festive cocktails throughout the tournament. WHAT’S NEW IN THE NEW YEAR? COURSE IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS IN 2026 Cobblestone Golf Club: Beginning in Fall 2025, Cobblestone Golf Club will undergo a major renovation on the Black 9 course, rebuilding all bunkers with Capillary Concrete liners and new sand, improving drainage, and installing new concrete cart paths with select rerouting and tree removal. The same work will follow on the Garnet 9 course, with completion targeted for Spring 2026. During construction, the nine holes under renovation will be closed. The Water’s Edge Country Club: After Memorial Day, The Water’s Edge will close the course to convert all bentgrass fairways and tees to Bermudagrass, with a 10–12 week grow-in and a planned reopening by Labor Day. The club will also begin practice facility upgrades, including a redesigned first hole, a relocated putting green, and an expanded driving range tee near the clubhouse. These enhancements will elevate the overall golf experience and position the club for long-term success.

JOHN MCCONNELL HONORED WITH INAUGURAL KORN FERRY TOUR “BEYOND THE GREEN” AWARD On December 11, John McConnell was recognized by the Korn Ferry Tour as the inaugural recipient of its new “Beyond the Green” Award during the tour’s annual tournament meetings at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The award was created to recognize an individual whose impact on the Tour extends beyond tournament operations—someone who leads with integrity, supports collaboration, and consistently elevates the experience for players, partners, and communities. Planned work includes checking sand depths in all bunkers, edging beds and applying new pine straw, pruning dead or low-hanging limbs, conducting a full irrigation head audit, leveling irrigation heads around greens, completing drainage projects, bush-hogging natural areas, and addressing several immediate creek bank issues—all while maintaining daily course maintenance.

Spring is coming, but we still have a few months of winter golf ahead, which means we ask you to please remain mindful of a few key things. Let’s put that in perspective: in 17 mph wind versus calm conditions, that’s roughly 2.3 strokes per round... and that’s for tour professionals. Wind affects every shot, from driving to putting (yes wind can impact putts too). The wind pushes the ball offline, and adds a lot of variability to shot outcomes.

I believe most would agree 2025 was quite a year for the Cardinal. Not only did the club hit a milestone birthday, 50, we also saw some of the biggest growth around the club in a long time. The club had over 60 new families join,

Those that chose to play and support this year’s Turkey Trot event, we were able to raise just over $2,000 for Toys for Tots. Our teammate, Angela Ayers and her family, delivered all the gifts to the charity. This event is near and dear to Angela as she has been involved with Toys for Tots for almost 34 years, beginning back to her time when she worked at the Cardinal. Thank you to all who participated and help support this wonderful cause.

Looking to the new year, a couple of things come to mind that we will need your help with. First, you’ve heard me say this a bunch in the past month or two, but I’ll say it again, we will be transitioning to a new tournament management software and app, called Unknown Golf. As a company, McConnell Golf feels this software will give you the best end user experience. Members will notice a lot of information in their “Clubhouse”, from events registered for, to upcoming events available for signup, and results from current and previous events. No need for login codes anymore, all the information will be at your fingertips. As you read this, most of the 2026 Cardinal Tournament Schedule has been loaded in the software for you to view the dates of each event. Secondly, we will need your help with will be the creation of a true Handicap Committee. As part of our membership with the Carolinas Golf Association, each facility must have a handicap committee. In the past, this has been the Professional Staff, however this year will be asking a few members to help run this committee and monitor score posting. Everyone wants to play in fair events, creating this committee with member oversight will help in this cause. One rule to remember, whenever you tee it up to play (practice or a match with friends) you are obligated to post a score as part of the USGA Handicap rules. If you need help learning more or understanding how to post a score please see a member of the professional staff. As we get further into the year we will keep you updated on comings and goings around the Cardinal. We look forward to a great 2026 and we can’t wait to see everyone around the club real soon. STAFF STORY | SHERRI TALLANT: THE SPARK BEHIND THREE DECADES OF FITNESS AT SEDGEFIELD When you step back and consider what it takes to keep a club like Sedgefield Country Club thriving, adaptable, and resilient for a century, the answer closely mirrors what it takes for a person to live a long and fruitful life. It’s a commitment to daily habits, consistency, and care that allows both a person and a club to reach 100 years. A club relies on a team of caring individuals to shine the floors, paint the walls, and manicure the course. A person must stay social, eat well, and keep moving forward. And at the center of both is fitness. For more than 30 years, Sedgefield Country Club has been fortunate to have one of the most talented and dedicated fitness directors and instructors helping to keep the Club in shape. Sherri Tallant began her tenure at Sedgefield Country Club back in 1994 and has led the fitness center ever since. She had been leading fitness classes at a gym in High Point when several Sedgefield members, who were driving across town specifically to take her classes, threw Sherri’s name in the hat to be the Club’s fitness director. “Stepping into this job at Sedgefield was a big adjustment for me,” Sherri said recently. “I had never worked in the country club world before, and there were a lot of members who doubted the benefits of a fitness program at the Club. But it didn’t take long for people to see the positive impact it had on their lives.” From day one, Sherri has been committed to the club’s members, and the members have invested back in her. “I was a young mom with two little kids when I first started,” Sherri said. “The members here embraced me and my children. They supported them as they grew up, got married, and had children of their own. I’ve also enjoyed watching our members’ children grow up.” That sense of continuity has defined much of Sherri’s career. “I remember training one of our members when I first started while she was pregnant,” she shared. “I watched her son grow up, and I’ve had the privilege of helping her son train as well.” Some of the members at the Club who have trained with Sherri became her mentors. “I remember General Adams always gave me such great advice,” Sherri said. “He would tell me not to forget what’s most important: family. And I remember Anne Lucado always telling me to take care of myself and my family.” Reflecting on her time here at Sedgefield thus far, Sherri looks back on her decision to come to the Club with gratitude. “Coming to Sedgefield was a terrifying change at the time,” she said. “But it was the best decision I ever made. It’s been a great journey.” If you ask members or staff what Sherri means to Sedgefield, they’re always quick to answer with admiration. Her tenacity, consistency, and commitment to excellence have helped our Club and its members stay resilient, adaptable, and ready to take on the next challenge. We are deeply grateful to recognize Sherri for her dedication to Sedgefield Country Club, its members, and its staff. Her leadership and steady presence are a driving force behind the health and vitality of this community. We are honored to celebrate her and thankful to have her as part of the Sedgefield family.
