CLUB UPDATE

What an Incredible Welcome

I want to sincerely thank all of you for the warm welcome I have received during my first few weeks here at Sedgefield Country Club My first week, the week of the Wyndham Championship, was a whirlwind, but I had the chance to meet many of our members while they were enjoying the tournament. Now that Wyndham Week is behind us, I have been able to enjoy more meaningful time connecting with both our members and our team.

I am truly excited to get to know each of you, and I look forward to working with our team to find ways to make your experience here at the club even better.

Changes Coming to Food & Beverage at Sedgefield

At McConnell Golf, we pride ourselves on developing talented professionals and giving them opportunities to grow within our team. With that mission in mind, we are thrilled to share with our members that Austin Pendergraft has been promoted to Dining Services Manager and Joaquin Campos has been promoted to Interim Executive Chef

As many of you know, Austin has done a phenomenal job leading our Cafe operations over the last few years In his new role, he will lead all front-of-house operations throughout the food and beverage department We have no doubt that he will do a fantastic job leading his team and elevating the level of hospitality we are providing throughout the club

Chef Joaquin has been with Sedgefield Country Club for eight years, mostly serving as Sous Chef He first joined the team working for Chef James “JP” Patterson, who is now McConnell Golf’s Corporate Chef and GM of Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington, NC Chef JP has done an excellent job preparing Chef Joaquin for this opportunity. We are so delighted to have Chef Joaquin slide into this interim role and continue to grow with us here at Sedgefield Country Club.

Hospitality First

As you may know, my background is in hotel operations, where I have had the privilege of leading teams through the highs and lows of the service industry. If there’s one simple truth I’ve learned through it all, it’s this: hospitality must always come first How you make someone feel shapes everything about the service and experience you provide

Please join me in congratulating these two outstanding team members as they take on their new opportunities

Here at Sedgefield Country Club, we are getting back to the basics We want this club to feel like an extension of your home Over the next several months, you will see us working hard to improve the quality of your experiences across the club, with a particular emphasis on our food and beverage offerings You will see new dinner menus with more of your favorites included, crafted cocktail menus that make you want to order another round, and team members who consistently go above and beyond to make every moment special for you and your family. All I ask in return is your patience and your partnership in sharing constructive feedback as we continue this journey Thank you all in advance for your support!

See you out there,

SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER

A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

We are coming off the heels of a very successful Wyndham Championship and were thrilled to crown our first-time champion, Cameron Young Thanks to the cooperation of Mother Nature, the course played firm and fast for most of the week, with less than a half-inch of rain during the event

The weeks leading up to the tournament, however, told a much different story In July alone, we received nearly 14 inches of rain the most in quite some time While this made preparations challenging, it also produced some of the healthiest and thickest rough we’ve seen for the Championship Players and caddies alike shared very positive feedback on both the course conditions and overall presentation I’d also like to extend my gratitude to those members who went out of their way to thank our staff during tournament week it truly meant a great deal.

As we transition into fall, the turf throughout the property is in excellent condition Tournament structures should be completely removed (if not already), and in the coming weeks we’ll begin repairing any damaged areas with new sod. Later in September, we will also start gradually raising mowing heights to prepare for cooler weather This step is a vital part of our agronomic plan, as it strengthens the bermudagrass before dormancy and provides additional protection from cart and foot traffic during the winter months when recovery is limited.

Our light topdressing program on the greens will continue through September, and on September 2nd we will aerify with small needle tines to ensure the greens enter winter as healthy as possible This process causes minimal disruption, and ball roll typically returns to normal within just a day or two

With summer winding down, the crisp, cool mornings ahead make for some of the very best golfing weather of the year I hope to see you out on the course enjoying the excellent conditions.

I think it is safe to say that the worst of the summer weather is behind us, and man was that a tough summer to get through I do believe it was one of the hottest and wettest summers on record As most of you know, hot and wet weather can make it very challenging to maintain healthy bent grass greens While we do have a few areas on the greens that have thinned a little, I am very happy with the health

of our greens With that being said we still need to be smart about how we maintain our greens, as they are still recovering from a tough summer

We made the decision in mid August to change from our typical plan (which is to pull a core during the August aerification) to using a solid tine that only pokes a hole without removing any material. The reason for this is to minimize any added stress to already stressed greens A typical core aerification can be very abrasive to the greens, due to all of the sand being drug around. This is not something that we will do every year, but I do feel it is the best thing to do this year. In the six summers that I have been here this is the first time we are skipping a core aerification, so there is no concern about getting behind on removing organic matter

I would like to make you aware of a few things that you may notice as we head into fall and start preparing the course for winter As we get into September, we will start to raise the height of cut on tees, fairways, and green surrounds. This is done to make sure we have enough material on these surfaces to handle all of the winter traffic Raising the height of cut on all short-cut areas also helps to insulate from cold temperatures in the winter which can help to prevent winter kill Also, at the beginning of September we will be putting out a fall fertility application on all short-cut and high traffic areas to ensure that these areas go into dormancy as healthy as possible

I hope that you are able to come out and enjoy lots of great golf this fall and hopefully some great fall weather Look forward to seeing you on the course

TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

We can almost officially say Summer is over and hello to Fall

I am ready to hopefully see a change in our weather. The last 3-4 months has provided us with more rain than I can ever remember in recent years. Did you make it out to the Wyndham

Championship? The golf course conditions were absolutely perfect and other than a small shower on Friday, we saw perfect weather conditions and even Fall like temperatures on the weekend This year’s tournament provided us with a first-time winner in Cameron Young. Cameron, who is also a Wake Forest Alum, become the PGA TOUR’s 1,000th unique winner

We are really looking forward to the next few months Fall is always a great time to play golf in North Carolina, that is when you are not rooting on your College Football Team! We still have several events left to finish out the season Please be on the lookout in the next few weeks and we will have a surprise event to kick off our Centennial Celebration!

We look forward to seeing you at the club. Please let us know how we can help make your time here at Sedgefield the best and most enjoyable time possible.

Thank You, Eric Ferguson, PGA Director of Golf

FERG’S FIXES

Great Putting Game

This is one of my go-to putting games to improve lag putting, second-putt focus, and handling pressure You’ll need three balls and ideally access to four holes on a practice green (Adjust as needed if fewer holes are available )

How to Play

1 Choose a starting spot where all three of your first putts (to Holes 1, 2, and 3) are in the 25–45 foot range

2 Drop your three balls

3. Putt each ball from your starting spot:

• Ball 1 to Hole 1

• Ball 2 to Hole 2

• Ball 3 to Hole 3

4 Walk to Hole 1 Keep putting until the ball is in the hole Track how many total putts it takes. After you hole out, take the ball and putt it back towards Hole 4

5 Repeat this at Hole 2 and Hole 3, each time putting the ball to Hole 4 after you hole out

6 Walk back to the three balls you hit back towards hole four

One at a time, hole out each ball into hole four.

You’ve now completed a “6-hole loop” You basically go from the starting point to holes 1, 2 and 3 And then you go from holes 1, 2 and 3 back to hole 4 That is 6 total “holes”

How You Complete The Game

You must complete each 6-hole loop in 12 putts or fewer.

If you take 13 or more putts, you must start that loop over from the beginning.

Your goal is to successfully complete three separate 6-hole loops, each under the 12-putt limit

Once you complete Loop 1 in 12 putts or fewer, you can move on to Loop 2. If you fail Loop 2, just restart at Loop 2, you do not need to go all the way back to Loop 1

Same holds true for Loop 3. Once you get to Loop 3, if you fail, you just re-start at Loop 3.

Tips

Rotate your starting position for each new loop to challenge yourself with different slopes/reads.

This game really punishes poor lag putting Get that speed DIALED.

Track how many attempts it takes to complete all three loops Try to reduce that over time A perfect score would be completing each loop on your first attempt (meaning you never three-putt).

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Well, we’ve made it through another summer season here at the Cardinal To say it was a challenge would be an understatement With all the rainy days at the beginning, followed by a final stretch of intense heat, it definitely made for an interesting golfing season Even with all of the weather-related challenges, Ross and his team continued to provide us with an unbelievable golf course to play on Thank you, Ross

The summer months tend to be a little slower competition-wise at the Cardinal due to the possibility of tougher conditions and stress on the bent grass greens However, we were still able to host a couple of wonderful events in July and August

First, our annual Parent/Child event continues to grow and allow families to create incredible memories This year, we had our largest field yet and expect it to keep growing in the years to come Let’s congratulate our winners once again for their great play: Toby and Blake Leasure, Henry and Peter Kriegler, Scott and Cameron Harvey, and David and Jack Boyer We look forward to watching all our juniors continue their golf journey Thank you to all the parents who came out and spent the day with their son or daughter They might not remember it, but I know you will

Mother Nature seemed to know we’d had enough of the heat and decided to cool things off near the end of August This was music to the ears of all the participants in this year’s Dye Cup (Men’s Member/Guest), as the temperatures were unseasonably cool for August The competition was strong, with 84 players - the largest field to date for this tournament - competing for the title Players participated in a Drive, Chip, and Putt contest on the first evening and enjoyed some fabulous food and drinks The competitions starts and the course showed its teeth Greens were quick and the rough was diabolical Points were tough to come by with all the matches being played very tight After 5 rounds of match play, we ended with 7 flight winners and 1 wild card team making it to the shootout

The modified alternate shot format makes for a challenging experience because both players have to contribute to the team’s success. With an extra needed to declare the winner, the team of Matt Coble and Will Walser rose to the occasion to capture the title of Dye Cup Champions Was a wonderful weekend of golf, food, laughs, and memories. Thank you to everyone who participated and joined us Congratulations to Mr Coble and Mr Walser for their great play See you all again real soon

In August, we hosted our annual Summer Shootout - now called The Borjeswhich pitted teams against each other in an 18-hole gross qualifier Ten winners were then eligible to compete in a grueling 9-hole alternate shot shootout This event showcased some amazing golf from some very talented players With 10 teams starting on Hole #1, each team’s goal was simple: beat just one other team to advance. That was easier said than done. After all nine holes, the team of Ayush Bodhale and Jacob Uyesato emerged victorious These two young players survived a chip-off on Hole 7 and defeated the team of Biggs and Grimes before claiming the title on the 9th hole. Congratulations to Ayush and Jacob for their stellar play.

As we look to the upcoming golf calendar at the Cardinal, we still have a few special events on the books. Our annual Lady Bird Invitational is up first in September For those ladies looking to show off their club and enjoy two great days at the club, please put this event on your calendar Dates are September 24th and 25th In October its time to put your skills to the test with our Championship Weekend. We will conduct our Men’s, Senior, Ladies and Junior Club Championship on the weekend of October 17-19 Get your and let’s crown this year’s winners

As always, thank you for your support of the Cardinal We look forward to seeing you around the club real soon

2025 POOL SEASON

The 2025 pool season was truly unforgettable filled with sunshine, laughter, and countless moments shared by the water. It was a joy to see so many of you making the most of summer, from cheering on the SCC Fins at swim meets to celebrating together at our July 4th festivities and enjoying the excitement of summer camps. As the season winds down, we’ll cap things off with our Labor Day party on September 1st! Looking ahead, our team is already preparing fresh ideas to make the 2026 season even more special. We can’t wait to see you back at the pool next summer!
