We’re excited to welcome Josh Mulvaine to the PNCC tennis and pickleball team as our Assistant Tennis and Pickleball Professional! Josh is currently pursuing a degree in Sports Management and brings a strong combination of competitive playing experience, coaching knowledge, and a genuine passion for helping players develop their game.

A complete list is available on the PNCC website.

A lifelong multi-sport athlete, Josh grew up playing basketball, golf, and tennis, but it was on the tennis court where his talent and dedication truly stood out. He competed on his high school varsity tennis team all four years and held the #1 singles position during both his junior and senior seasons.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1 | PORTERS NECK CC

After high school, Josh attended Ohio Northern University, where he remained closely involved with the tennis program. Although an injury prevented him from competing on the roster, his understanding of the game, work ethic, and continued development impressed the coaching staff, leading to an opportunity to serve as an assistant coach for the university’s tennis program for two years. Josh has continued to build his coaching experience through private instruction and currently serves as an assistant coach for a local tennis team. He also holds a Level 1 PPR certification for tennis and Pickleball.

Porters Neck members are invited to join us for an afternoon of heavy hors d'oeuvres and remarks from the UNCW Chancellor and Coaches. Look for the complete details to be announced, very shortly!

Josh is passionate about helping players improve technically, strategically, and mentally, and he looks forward to working with PNCC members of all ages and ability levels. Please join us in giving Josh a warm PNCC welcome!

Accompanied Guest Play We have seen a lot of guest play lately and we would like to remind everyone of a few rules. A Member MUST accompany their guest while playing golf, unless the guest is registered as a House Guest. A sponsoring member may bring up to seven guests at one time, except on weekends and holidays, provided advanced reservations are made through the pro shop. Any exceptions to this rule must be approved by the Director of Golf. A sponsoring member is responsible for notifying their guests of dress code policies and regulations governing proper care of the golf course. Changing shoes or attire in the parking lot is prohibited. An individual using the Club Golf Facility as a guest must be registered by the sponsoring member with the Club. The Club reserves the right to require identification by each guest. Guests will be charged guest fees for use of the Club Facilities as determined from time to time by the Club. Guests will be entitled to use the Club Facilities only in accordance with the privileges of the membership of the sponsoring member upon payment of the daily fees charged to the member’s account. The Club has limited the number of rounds a guest may use the golf facility during each membership year as defined in the Membership Plan to no more than six (6) times. Said rule does not apply to immediate family members, defined as brother, sister, parent, and children, living more than 100 miles from the Club. Member/Guest tournaments do not count towards the total six visits per membership year.

Notes From the Pro Believe it or not, Fall is right around the corner. With more comfortable weather, the golf course gets busier. It is important that everybody does a good job managing their tee time so all members can enjoy the course. Cancel a time as soon as you know it is not needed and only put names in of the players that are going to play. While on the course, remember to keep up with the group in front of yours, and if you can’t, let faster groups play through. Always repair your ball marks and fill in your divots with sand.Dispose of trash in trash cans or leave in the cart. Try to leave the course in better shape than you found it! POST | GOLF NEWS

WHY WE AERIFY:

What’s Happening Beneath the Greens A MESSAGE FROM CHRIS PARHAM, GOLF COURSE SUPER INTENDENT

One of the questions I hear from members from time to time is, “Why do we aerify our greens more than once a year?” It is a fair question, particularly when you see the greens looking great, only to have them go through another round of aerification or cultivation. I understand that these practices can temporarily affect putting conditions, and I also understand why members may wonder why we don't simply do less and keep the greens playing at their best throughout the growing season. The answer comes down to something you cannot always see from the surface: what is happening beneath the putting surface. Our greens are planted with Champion Bermudagrass, a variety that performs extremely well in our hot, humid growing season. However, Champion is also a very aggressive-growing turf that produces a significant amount of organic matter. POST | GOLF NEWS

What is Organic Matter and Why Does It Matter? Organic matter is a natural byproduct of turf growth. Roots, stems, leaves and other plant material eventually break down and become part of the soil profile. A healthy amount of organic matter is beneficial. Too much, however, can become a problem. As organic matter builds and layers in the upper profile, it can restrict water movement through the green. Over time, this can affect drainage, firmness, rooting and ultimately the consistency and playability of the putting surface. Our greens are designed to drain efficiently through a sand-based root zone. Our job is to make sure they continue to function that way. If we only focused on what the greens looked like today, we could simply reduce the amount of disruption and perform lighter maintenance. But our responsibility is to manage the greens for the next five, ten and twenty years—not just the next few weeks. PAGE 16

Why Do We Aerify in May and July? Our cultivation program is designed around the growing characteristics and specific needs of our greens. We utilize different practices throughout the growing season, including: Smaller-tine aerification in May Larger-tine, deeper aerification in July Verticutting Topdressing

Each practice has a different purpose, and together they allow us to manage the root zone and organic matter throughout the growing season. Our May aerification is less aggressive and helps us begin addressing the organic matter buildup before the peak of the summer growing season. The deeper July aerification is a more significant process. This is when we can remove more material from deeper in the profile and create channels for air, water and roots to move through the soil.

Why Does It Sometimes Look Rough After Cultivation? There is an important balance we have to maintain. We need to be aggressive enough with our cultivation practices to accomplish the agronomic objective, but we do not want to unnecessarily damage the putting surface. Our goal is not to damage the greens. When we perform deeper verticutting or aerification, there can be areas—particularly on slopes or areas with different turf characteristics—that require additional attention and recovery. If we see damage beyond what we consider acceptable, that is something we need to address with our team and evaluate how the practice was executed. The objective is always the same: accomplish the necessary agronomic work while minimizing the impact on playability.

Why Not Just Verticut and Topdress? This is probably the most important part of the explanation. Light, frequent verticutting and topdressing are important components of our program, and we will continue to use those practices whenever possible. They help dilute organic matter and maintain the upper portion of the profile. However, based on the conditions we are managing at Porters Neck, those practices alone are not aggressive enough to stay ahead of the amount of organic matter our Champion Bermudagrass produces. At some point, we have to physically remove material from the profile. That is where core aerification and deeper cultivation become necessary. Think of it as maintenance that you cannot always see immediately from the surface, but that is critical to maintaining the health of the entire putting green.or air, water and roots to move through the soil. POST | GOLF NEWS

PAGE 17

Why Do Other Clubs Do It Differently? Members may also notice that other clubs with Champion Bermudagrass have different aerification schedules. That does not necessarily mean one club is right and another is wrong. Every golf course is different. Greens can have different construction profiles, soil conditions, drainage characteristics, irrigation water, turf history, levels of play and maintenance practices. Even two clubs with the same grass variety can have very different agronomic needs. Our program is based specifically on what we are seeing and measuring at Porters Neck. We have to manage the greens we have—not the greens at another club.

The Short-Term Tradeoff for a Long-Term Benefit I completely understand that members want the best possible putting surfaces, particularly during the time of year when Bermuda greens should be performing at their peak. We want that too. There are times, however, when protecting the long-term health of the greens requires us to accept a temporary reduction in putting quality. That is the tradeoff. The work we do during aerification and cultivation is an investment in keeping our greens firm, healthy, welldrained and consistent for years to come. Our ultimate goal is to provide the putting conditions that our members expect from Porters Neck Country Club: firm, fast and consistent greens.

I appreciate the members who ask questions and take an interest in what our team is doing. Golf course maintenance can sometimes be misunderstood because much of the most important work happens below the surface. My commitment to our membership is that we will continue to evaluate our practices, listen to feedback, and make adjustments when appropriate—but we will always make decisions based on what is best for the long-term health and playability of the golf course. Thank you for your continued support of our agronomy team and for allowing us to do the work necessary to keep Porters Neck among the best golf experiences possible. Sincerely, Chris Parham Golf Course Superintendent | Porters Neck Country Club POST | GOLF NEWS

Fall Bocce League SEPTEMBER 20 - NOVEMBER 21 | PORTERS NECK Bocce League is BACK at PNCC! This season, we’re offering TWO leagues so everyone can choose the experience that fits them best: Fun League Come out, play, socialize, and enjoy some fun Bocce! Competitive League For players looking for a little more competition — but remember, we still want everyone to have fun and not take it too seriously! IMPORTANT: Neither league has priority over the other. Both leagues will follow the same scheduling guidelines and have equal access to the courts. Cost & Registration $15 per player | Register online by Sepember 13. When registering, please indicate whether you plan to play in the Fun League or Competitive League. A Few Important Notes All rules from previous seasons will continue to apply. NEW THIS SEASON: Practice will only be permitted from 8:00–10:00 AM. This will allow us to keep more court time available throughout the day for league matches. Depending on the size of each league and whether we need to create multiple divisions, we may not have a championship match. If that is the case, the regular-season winner will be named League Champion. Most importantly, we want both leagues to be fun, social, and a great way to enjoy Bocce at PNCC! If you have any questions, please email Rafa at tennisdirector@portersneckcountryclub.com. See you on the courts!
