Two Chefs. Two Finalists. One Proud Club Porters Neck Heads to the NCRLA Chef Showdown Finals Executive Pastry Chef Becky Keil has officially earned her place in the final round of the NCRLA Chef Showdown, joining just five pastry chefs from across North Carolina still competing for the title of Pastry Chef of the Year. And in a plot twist that surprises absolutely no one familiar with his talent, General Manager and Corporate Executive Chef James “JP” Patterson has quietly made his way to the finals, too — competing for NCRLA Chef of the Year. The NCRLA Chef Showdown Finale takes place September 2 at Bay 7 in Durham, bringing together some of North Carolina's top culinary talent and celebrating the farmers, fishermen, distillers and producers who make the state's food scene so distinctive.
eventually working her way into the kitchen and becoming the Club's Executive Pastry Chef. Her finalist dessert was a creative take on peaches and cream: a brown butter pecan pizzelle taco shell filled with bourbon peach compote, honey chèvre and honeycomb candy crunch, finished with local Castle Hayne honey. Becky credits JP with continually encouraging her to experiment and stretch creatively. “He really pushes me to go outside the box and keep trying new things.” JP’S ROAD TO THE FINALS JP earned his place in the Chef of the Year finals with a dish featuring pan-seared North Carolina gag grouper, sweet corn velouté, buttermilk cornbread, summer succotash and smoked tomato water. For JP, however, Chef Showdown has never been solely about winning.
BECKY’S ROAD TO THE FINALS This year's competition marks Becky's second Chef Showdown appearance — and her first trip to the finals. Her story makes the accomplishment even sweeter. Becky has spent nine years at Porters Neck, beginning as a banquet server before attending pastry school and
JP earned his place in the Chef of the Year finals with a dish featuring pan-seared North Carolina gag grouper, sweet corn velouté, buttermilk cornbread, summer succotash and smoked tomato water. For JP, however, Chef Showdown has never been solely about winning. “It’s not so much about the competition for me as it is to be around other chefs and peers. Yes, it would be nice to win, but that’s not the only thing that drives me.” Now comes an entirely different challenge: taking dishes prepared for a small panel of semifinal judges and recreating them for approximately 600 guests at the finale. For two chefs accustomed to the ever-changing demands of club dining, however, adapting is part of the job. Next stop: Durham

INTRACOASTAL MATCH SCHEDULE PORTERS NECK August 19 Match | August 14 Qualifying Cutoff
Tee Time Etiquette Tee time etiquette is just as important as golf course etiquette and there is more to managing your tee time than just booking that time. With our course being so busy, it is important that the member making the tee time reservation take ownership of that time. Here are a few things that can be done to make sure your tee time is well managed: Book tee times when you plan to actually use them, not as an option to play. Only use names of members that are actually planning to play. It is understandable that names may change between when the reservation is made and when actual play takes place. However, correct names should be designated for all tee times no later than 48 hours prior to scheduled play. If you don't know who will play, do you need the tee time? Manage the time! If players change or drop off, make those changes accordingly. If you have only 3 players, make sure there are only 3 names on your time. This will allow other members to possibly find a game.
RIVER LANDING October 7 Match | September 30 Qualifying Cutoff
The Interclub is open to all male golf members of Porters Neck. THE TEAM 12-person team along with one pro. Net Stableford format. The top 10 scores are added together for our team score. Each match we play against the other five teams. Team scores are added at the end of the season to determine the champion. Cost includes golf, cart and lunch afterwards. The top team for that day’s match receives $70 in shop credit at the home course. Second place receives $35.
Cancellation of tee time reservations should be made as soon as it is known the time is not needed.
HOW TO QUALIFY Before playing a round of golf at Porters Neck inform the pro shop that you are turning in that day’s card to try and qualify for the next Interclub match. You can only turn in one card per match. Your card will be matched against your handicap. After the first match the top 4 players based on points will automatically be in the next match.
Failure to cancel your time or check in and register with the Pro Shop for a reserved starting time will be charged a penalty fee.
Players must let me know they have turned in a card via email, phone or text.
Make sure all of your players are aware of the correct time. On day of play, all players must check into the pro shop at least 10 minutes prior to start of play.
