FROM OUR FOOD & BEVERAGE MANAGER Eat, Drink & Give Yourself a Reason to Come See Us Apparently, we’re supposed to need a reason to go out for good food and drinks. Luckily, I’ve got a few. We’re kicking things off with Birthday Night! If you’re celebrating this month, let us do the cooking. Chef Kenric and his team put together a delicious birthday buffet each month, so come hungry, bring your family and friends, and celebrate without lifting a finger in the kitchen (or loading the dishwasher afterward).
Then there’s Date Night—and yes, it still counts if you’ve been married for years and spent the drive over discussing the grocery list. Come enjoy a great meal, order a cocktail (or a bottle of wine), and have an evening that’s about more than deciding what’s for dinner. Want to make a whole day of it? Play a round of golf, then head up to the Clubhouse for dinner and drinks. A good round deserves a good meal afterward… and even a bad round deserves a drink. Later in the month, Ladies’ Nine & Wine is the perfect excuse to spend an evening on the course with friends. Enjoy nine holes of golf, then relax in the Clubhouse while one of our wine distributors pours a variety of wines for you to sample before selecting your included glass. Great golf, great wine, and even better company—what’s not to love? And speaking of wine… Wine Down Wednesday happens every Wednesday with half-priced bottles of select wines! We’ll also be introducing a few new wines throughout the season, so it’s the perfect excuse to stop in and discover a new favorite. Keep an eye out for our end-of-month dinner features, too. Chef Kenric and the team always have something creative in the works, and they’re definitely worth checking out. FROM OUR EVENT COORDINATOR It’s hard to believe I’m coming up on one year at Brook Valley! This past year has absolutely flown by, and I’ve loved getting to know so many of our members, their families, and all the little things that make Brook Valley feel like home. And we have so much fun coming up! We’re wrapping up summer with our Labor Day Pool Party, and then Fall Fest is right around the corner! We’re going all in this year with festive food, games, hayrides, pumpkins, plenty for the kids to do, and a few fun surprises we’re keeping up our sleeves. Basically, if it feels like fall, we’re probably finding a way to squeeze it in. And that’s only the beginning. We have plenty more planned as we head into the holidays, and I can’t wait to share it all with you! Have Something of Your Own to Celebrate? GOLF UPDATES As we transition into the fall, we have an exciting lineup of events, tournaments, and programs planned for our members. September and October will be busy months at Brook Valley, with the conclusion of our summer programs, the return of Couples Golf, our Club Championship, and several of our favorite fall events. Our Operation 36 programs will continue into the fall, with more information regarding upcoming sessions and schedules being sent out soon. These programs continue to provide a fun and structured way for both juniors and ladies to develop their games and enjoy more time on the course. We look forward to continuing these programs throughout the fall and seeing everyone back on the course!
September 23 – Ladies Nine & Wine Our September Ladies Nine & Wine will provide another great evening of golf and fellowship. Come out and enjoy nine holes with the ladies of Brook Valley as we welcome the beginning of fall. October 1 – MGA Purple & Gold Draft Party We will kick off October with the MGA Purple & Gold Draft Party. Get ready for another exciting team event as the teams are selected and the competition begins! October 3-4 – MGA Purple & Gold Tournament The MGA Purple & Gold Tournament returns for another weekend of team competition. This is always a favorite on the fall golf calendar, and we look forward to seeing our MGA members battle it out for bragging rights.
UPCOMING FALL EVENTS September 10 – NNC Senior Interclub at Brook Valley It is our turn to host the NNC Senior Interclub! Our senior team will welcome the other clubs to Brook Valley as we look to continue our strong season and defend our position near the top of the season-long standings. We encourage our members to come out and support the team as they compete on their home course. September 11 – Couples Golf Couples Golf returns in September! Grab your significant other and join us for a fun evening of golf, competition, and fellowship. We look forward to getting our couples back out on the course for another great event. September 13 – Parent-Child Event Bring your junior golfer out for another fun and family-friendly event. Our Parent-Child events are a great way to spend time together on the course while introducing younger players to the excitement of competitive golf. September 17 – Final MGA Men's Night The MGA Men's Night season comes to an end on September 17th. After a full season of weekly competition, the race for the top 20 spots will come down to the final event. The Top 20 players will earn a spot in the MGA Shootout on October 25th. September 19-20 – Club Championship Our annual Club Championship returns September 19-20. This is one of the most anticipated individual events of the year, as members compete for the opportunity to have their name added to the Brook Valley Club Championship history. Good luck to everyone competing!

October 7 – Final Ladies Nine & Wine Our final Ladies Nine & Wine of the season will be held October 7th. If you haven't joined us for one yet, this is your last chance to enjoy an evening of golf, fun, and fellowship with the ladies of Brook Valley! October 10 – Bottles & Birdies Bottles & Birdies returns on October 10th! Come enjoy a fun fall evening that combines great golf, good drinks, and plenty of fellowship with fellow members. October 16 – Ladies Member-Guest The ladies take center stage for our Ladies Member-Guest on October 16th. We look forward to welcoming our members and their guests for a great day of golf, competition, and camaraderie at Brook Valley. October 18 – Parent-Child Event Our October Parent-Child event is another great opportunity to bring the family out for a fun day on the course. We hope to see plenty of parents and junior golfers joining us! October 24 – LGA Cup The LGA Cup will be held October 24th as our ladies wrap up another great season of competition. We look forward to seeing our LGA members come out and compete in this exciting team event. October 25 – MGA Shootout After months of MGA Men's Night competition, the Top 20 players will battle it out in the MGA Shootout on October 25th. This season-ending event will determine who takes home the title after a full season of competition. October 31 – Final LGA Day We will wrap up the LGA season on October 31st with our final LGA Day of the year. We want to thank all of our LGA members for another fantastic season and look forward to celebrating together one final time

TURF TALK The rough is tough, but at least it’s not tall. This is the time of year when Bermuda grass starts preparing itself to make it through the winter. Even though temperatures still get warm during the day, the hours of direct sun begin to decrease. The grass begins to get thicker and hardier. We still see green on top, but what is happening below the canopy is where the action is. Below the green the grass begins to store carbohydrates in the stolons. This can become glaringly evident when we cut the rough. Not far below the green grass, we see the now thicker and hardier stolons, and it looks like we “scalped” the rough. This look can be unsightly, and the only way to get away from that scalped look is to raise the height of cut on our mowers. Last year we made you a promise, and we intend to keep it. No mower will be set above 1.75”. We finished the week of Member/Guest still cutting at 1.5”. After Labor Day we will raise the height to 1.75” and that is where it will stay until we go dormant over the winter, and ultimately green up in the spring. Next spring we will start over again at 1.25”. The moral of the story, the rough will be thicker in the fall. This is nature. We are keeping it cut lower than in years past. Because of the season, your ball will be harder to find if you hit it in the rough, and harder to hit it out of the rough. The solution is simple, just don’t hit it in the rough and you will be fine! When you figure out how to do that, I would love some lessons from you on how to control the weather and the sun. We hope you have a beautiful autumn of the year, we hope you get to play a lot of golf, and we hope we get to see you at Brook Valley soon! FOOTPRINT McConnell Golf has completed its acquisition of The Crossings Golf Club in Glen Allen, Virginia, just outside Richmond in Henrico County, and will invest approximately $10 million to restore and modernize one of the region’s best-known public golf courses. The redevelopment will preserve the character of Joe Lee’s original design while restoring The Crossings as a premier public golf destination. Working with the Henrico Sports & Entertainment and Economic Development Authorities, McConnell Golf also shares a long-term vision of positioning The Crossings to host professional tour events and amateur tournaments, including collegiate and high school events. SEDGEFIELD COUNTRY CLUB SECURES PLACE IN PGA TOUR’S NEW CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES One of the PGA TOUR’s longest-running relationships will continue into a new era as Sedgefield Country Club remains home to Greensboro’s PGA TOUR event. Beginning in 2028, the tournament will become part of the new PGA TOUR Championship Series, with Raymond James serving as title sponsor. The event will be contested as a full-field PGA TOUR event in 2027 before transitioning to the Championship Series. Founded in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open, the tournament has been won by legends including Sam Snead, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan, with Sedgefield hosting the event more than 40 times. After a 31-year absence, the PGA TOUR returned to Sedgefield in 2008 following the restoration of its Donald Rossdesigned course, and McConnell Golf acquired the club in 2011. The announcement ensures Sedgefield will remain on one of golf’s biggest stages as the PGA TOUR enters its next era. In 2028, the Greensboro event will celebrate its 90th anniversary, bringing its remarkable history full circle.

Michael Brennan arrived at Sedgefield with his PGA TOUR season hanging in the balance and left as Wyndham Championship winner. The former Wake Forest standout closed with a 6-under 64 to win by three shots at 22-under 258, tying the tournament scoring record. SEPTEMBER COOKIE OF THE MONTH: GINGER COOKIE RECIPE JOHN HANEK, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT THE WATER’S EDGE COUNTRY CLUB Ginger cookies are warmly spiced with ginger and cinnamon to create a rich, comforting flavor. Their soft, chewy texture and sweet-spicy taste make them a timeless favorite for any occasion.
Ingredients: ¾ cup shortening ¼ cup molasses 1 cup sugar 1 egg 2 cups all purpose flour 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp ground ginger ½ tsp salt Extra sugar for dusting dough Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Mix well – shortening, molasses, sugar, & egg. 3. Sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, & salt. 4. Add to wet ingredients & mix until combined. 5. Cover bowl & refrigerate 2 hours or overnight. 6. Take a spoonful of dough & roll in hand to form a ball, then roll in sugar until coated. Place on cookie sheet & bake for 10-12 minutes (11 minutes tends to be the sweet spot).

OCTOBER COOKIE OF THE MONTH: RED VELVET COOKIE RECIPE KENRIC HUNT, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT BROOK VALLEY COUNTRY CLUB RECIPE COURTESY OF JAHNAE ROACH Jahnae Roach is going to school for art and business. She is a dishwasher, an at-home cook and baker, and also an artist (lyrically and visually). Red velvet is an amazing burst of flavor and full of color and not as appreciated as much as it should be. Ingredients: 1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour 1/3 cup of cocoa powder 1 teaspoon of baking soda ½ teaspoon of baking powder ½ teaspoon of salt 1 cup of butter (softened) ¾ cup of brown sugar
½ cup of white sugar 1 large egg 1 tablespoon of milk 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract 2 tablespoons of red food coloring 1 cup of white chocolate chips or as needed
Directions: 1.Whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a bowl. 2.Beat butter with an electric mixer for about 2 minutes until fluffy; beat in brown and white sugar until smooth. Beat egg, milk, and vanilla extract into butter mixture; beat in food coloring until uniformly colored. 3.Gradually stir the flour mixture into the butter mixture with the electric mixer at low speed until completely combined; stir in 1 cup of white chocolate chips. Roll the dough into 2 ½ -inch balls; place on prepared baking sheets and slightly flatten them. 5.Bake in the preheated oven for about 9-11 minutes until the edges are lightly browned.
