“New season, clean scorecard, endless possibilities ” Dalton Rich, PGA Director of Golf

It was the first day of February, and the golf course maintenance crew was busy shoveling 12 inches of fresh snow off of the parking lot The greens were covered, the air was cold, the wind was colder, and the 10-day weather forecast was bleak. It was not looking good for golf at BV for at least two weeks.

Fast forward to February 20th, and the weather was tolerable, if not altogether pleasant for a winter day in Eastern NC As we were planning for a lovely Friday for golf, the GCM team decided to cut greens for the first time in 2026 At a glance, the greens still looked off-color as they do for most of the winter Behind the mower we saw something we did not expect As we cut, with every pass across the turf, the greens mower revealed a putting surface with a beautiful dark green color!

After more than two weeks of the greens being under covers, then covered in snow, it seemed almost impossible we could be growing grass. We pulled the covers off on February 9th. Just eleven days later on the 20th we were cutting grass! If there could ever be a stronger argument for covering greens, I don’t know what it would be Even when it was as cold as it was outside, our greens never froze When the sun came out, the grass responded immediately The hard work of all the GCM crew pulling those covers on and off definitely paid off Hopefully as members, you feel the inconvenience of having the course closed while we were covered also felt like a worthy sacrifice The proof is truly in the health of the greens today

They are currently healthy and growing. How vigorously they grow will depend on temperature and availability of sunlight through the rest of the growing season. March can, and likely will, send us a hard frost before she officially gives up on old man winter and ushers in the spring season on the 20th These temperature swings are a challenging time for managing greens speeds As a team, we have to monitor soil temperatures, plan for warmer days, plan for colder days, and alter applications of fertilizer, growth regulator, and cultural practices accordingly

March 2nd was our first topdressing of the year. We will not start verticutting until the turf canopy gets a little tighter. Likely toward the end of March or the first part of April, the weather should help make that happen. Verticutting can do more harm than good if done too early or too aggressively An additional factor affecting speeds is how we are starting the year with lower heights of cut on greens than ever before We are already lower than we were last year at the end of March With that taken into account and the overall health of our greens coming out of dormancy, we are poised to have a great year for greens at the Valley

One other note worth mentioning again, we are planning to start cutting rough at a lower height than we saw in 2024. McConnell Golf courses throughout our network will be held to a certain standard for rough heights. We continue to be committed to making sure every round you play is a great experience, “Pure golf, for the true golfer." Thank you for a great season in 2025; we look forward to making 2026 even better!

PROGRESS CONTINUES ON COURSE RENOVATION PROJECT IN BLYTHEWOOD, SOUTH CAROLINA

With work on the Black 9 now complete, the renovation project at Cobblestone Golf Club has shifted to the Garnet 9 All bunkers will be rebuilt with Capillary Concrete liners and new sand, accompanied by subtle shaping to improve drainage and minimize washouts. The project also includes the installation of new concrete cart paths, selective rerouting for improved playability, and tree removal as needed to protect the new infrastructure.

The 2019 Perry’s Blend is a beautifully crafted Bordeaux-style Napa Valley red from Juslyn Vineyards, showcasing the intensity that defines the Spring Mountain District Juslyn Vineyards was founded by Perry and Carolyn Butler in 1997 after they left the tech world to pursue their passion for winemaking Their vineyard sits high above Napa Valley, where cooler mountain temperatures help create wines with great depth and character They focus on small-lot production and hands-on care, apparent in every bottle.

Bright red cherry and black currant lead the way, layered with hints of spice and subtle oak. Silky, polished tannins give the wine a graceful structure, while its supple texture and balanced acidity carry through to a long, lingering finish The result is a wine that is both powerful and refined equally suited for savoring now or pairing with a memorable meal. To reserve, please contact your club’s food & beverage director

APRIL COOKIE OF THE MONTH: POLVORONES COOKIE RECIPE

BY

CAMPOS,

CHEF AT SEDGEFIELD COUNTRY CLUB

”This cookie brings back so many memories from my childhood My favorite thing to do was tag along with my dad on his trips to the hardware store or the hardwood store We walked everywhere since we didn’t own a car, and by the time we were done shopping, we would stop at the convenience store and each get a 7-Up and a pack of Polvorones. I really wish I could freeze time or go back to when things were simpler.”Joaquin Campos

Ingredients:

½ cup unsalted butter at room temperature

½ cup solid vegetable shortening

2½ cups sifted powdered sugar

2 In another bowl, stir together the flour, nuts, and sea salt Add the flour mixture 1 tbsp at a time to the butter mixture, beating until thoroughly incorporated. The dough will be crumbly.

3 Transfer the dough into a bowl Wrap and then refrigerate for 1-2 hours
