GOLF UPDATES
As we move into the heart of summer, we have an exciting lineup of events, programs, and tournaments planned for members of all ages From family-friendly events and junior programming to ladies' competitions and club tournaments, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the golf course throughout July and August We appreciate the tremendous participation we've seen so far this season and look forward to keeping the momentum going through the remainder of the summer.
Our Operation 36 programs will continue throughout both months. Ladies Operation 36 will meet each Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., while Junior Operation 36 will take place each Wednesday from 11:00 a m – 12:00 p m Whether you're just getting started or continuing your development, these programs provide a fun and structured way to improve your game We encourage all participants to continue attending and taking advantage of these great opportunities

Celebrate Independence Day with one of golf's most unique formats! Your handicap will be added to 72, and you'll receive a flag to place where your final shot comes to rest once you've used all of your strokes Be sure to register before your round.

Our second Kids Camp of the summer is completely full, and we look forward to spending a fun-filled week teaching and enjoying the game with our junior golfers
July 9 – Ladies Eastern League at Lane Tree
Our ladies will travel to Lane Tree Golf Club for another exciting Eastern League interclub competition
July 9 – NNC Senior Interclub at Greenville Country Club
The senior team heads to Greenville Country Club looking to continue their strong season and add another victory to the standings
July 12 – Titleist Fitting Day
Join us for a special Titleist Fitting Day featuring the introduction of the new Titleist GT Series woods Schedule your fitting and experience the latest technology from Titleist
July 25 – Ladies Member-Member

Our annual Men's Member-Guest, the Ellis Maples Invitational, returns for three exciting days of competition, camaraderie, and hospitality We look forward to another outstanding event and welcoming a great field of participants

TURF TALK
The good news is cart path restrictions have seen a record low The bad news is this has been one of the worst droughts I can remember since I started working in the golf industry 25 years ago Down at the maintenance facility, we are fastidious record keepers of measured rainfall. For May and June combined we received 4.2 inches total, and only 1 inch of that was recorded in June. Dry is an understatement.
Fortunately, we have the some great individuals on our Golf Course Maintenance team who have multiple skill sets. Several of our guys have learned how to diagnose and repair nearly any challenges our irrigation system has produced. We have repaired, adjusted, or replaced over 40 different irrigation heads this summer Some had similar challenges, some were rather unique, but our team took it all in stride and did their very best to keep the course green We have also been fortunate to have a strong and well-maintained pump station to provide water to all the irrigation heads
Water management is something we take seriously Fine tuning the irrigation system is important to ensure we are not wasting water We take moisture readings on greens and collars several times throughout the week. If a small dry area is found we will water just that small area with a hose, instead of turning on the irrigation system and applying water to the whole green. Once a week we also take the time to watch the irrigations heads around the greens to make sure they are turning, cycling properly, and are providing water to the appropriate area. Water is a gift, and we do our best to be good stewards of such a precious resource.
You may have seen a new piece of equipment on the course in July As part of our capital investment plan, we were able to purchase a new debris sweeper This new unit will replace the old one, which was manufactured in the 1990’s It served us well for many years, but it was well past its prime The new unit has a bigger hopper, is drawn and powered by a tractor, and should do a better job of picking up pinecones, leaves, and small sticks This will be helpful year-round with pinecones, but the autumn is when we will truly reap the benefits of this new unit It will certainly help us clean up the course more efficiently
It has been a hot, dry summer, but a good one for golf! We are happy to see the tee sheet every morning because we know golfers are

Former McConnell Golf scholar Caleb Surratt will make his major championship debut at the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. Surratt secured his spot in golf’s national championship through final qualifying at Dallas Athletic Club in Dallas, Texas, where he posted rounds of 70 and 69 before prevailing in a six-man playoff for the final berth. He birdied the first playoff hole to punch his ticket to one of the game’s biggest stages
Many McConnell Golf members have followed Surratt’s journey for years
A standout junior golfer from Charlotte with ties to Providence Country Club, he went on to star at the University of Tennessee, earning first-team All-America honors and winning the SEC individual championship He turned professional in 2024 and now competes for Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team on LIV Golf.
Surratt’s U.S. Open appearance marks another milestone in a career filled with accomplishments, but for those who watched him develop as a young player through the McConnell Golf scholarship program, it is especially rewarding to see him competing alongside the best players in the world McConnell Golf congratulates Caleb on reaching his first U S Open and wishes him the best of luck at Shinnecock Hills

JULY COOKIE OF THE MONTH: S’MORES COOKIE CULINARY TEAM AT HOLSTON HILLS COUNTRY CLUB
Who doesn’t love that molten marshmallow with chocolate and a graham cracker? Whether you’re camping with friends or sitting by a fire pit in your yard, they’re very enjoyable. This cookie brings the flavors of a summer camp-out with less of the mess
Ingredients:
¾ cup unsalted butter
1 ½ cup all-purpose flour
½ tsp salt
½ tsp baking soda
2 large eggs, room temperature
¾ cup light brown sugar
⅓ cup granulated sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
5oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
⅔ cup graham crackers (3 sheets)
1 cup mini marshmallows
1 In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium-high heat Continue to heat, while occasionally stirring, until the butter has brown specks throughout Careful not to burn the butter Remove from heat and transfer to a large bowl Set aside to cool, but not thicken
2 In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt
3.Once the butter is at room temperature, whisk in the eggs, both sugars, and vanilla extract
4 Add the dry ingredients to the mixture and fold together until combined Add the chopped chocolate and mix just until incorporated Carefully fold in broken graham crackers and marshmallows
AUGUST COOKIE OF THE MONTH: PISTACHIO & CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE BY CULINARY TEAM AT THE PETE DYE RIVER COURSE OF VIRGINIA TECH
Chocolate chip pistachio cookies combine rich, melty chocolate with the subtle crunch and nutty flavor of roasted pistachios Their perfect balance of sweetness and texture makes them a delicious twist on a classic cookie favorite.
Ingredients:
1 cup pistachios, shelled and roughly chopped
2 cups unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
Directions:
1.Preheat oven to 350°F.
2 Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper
3.Shell and roughly chop the pistachios if not already done.
4 Allow the butter to soften to room temperature
5.In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
6 In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar together until creamy
7.Add the pistachio pudding mix, eggs, and vanilla extract; mix until combined.
8 Reduce mixer speed to low and slowly add the dry flour mixture
9 Fold in the chocolate chips, shredded coconut, and chopped pistachios
10 Drop rounded tablespoonfuls of dough onto the prepared cookie sheet
11 Bake for 8–10 minutes
12 Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely
