Safety Newsletter July Update
Partners, Safety is strongest when participation is broad, consistent, and purposeful. Thank you to everyone who has engaged with our Leading Indicators tool through McCarthy Vital Processes (MVPs). Across our teams, we are seeing not only more participation, but also better quality in the inspections being completed. That matters. Leading indicators help us identify exposure before it becomes an incident. They give us the ability to spot trends, strengthen work planning, reinforce safe behaviors, and correct gaps early—when action has the greatest impact. In other words, they help us prevent harm, not just measure it after the fact. This year’s Safety Goal initiative is keeping us focused on five critical MVPs: Renewables MVP, Hand MVP, Electrical MVP, Hazardous Energy/LOTO MVP, and THA MVP. At the same time, our short-term MVP Challenge is underway from July 20 through the end of September, with winners to be announced at the Shareholders event on October 1.

A strong inspection is more than checking a box—it reflects thoughtful observation, meaningful field engagement, and a commitment to learning and improving. Field Focus | Leading Indicator Meeting Attendance as a Leading Safety Indicator Strong safety performance starts before an incident occurs. While recordable injuries and near misses tell us what has already happened, consistent participation in safety meetings can help us identify gaps before they lead to an event. When staff and key craft partners actively participate in toolbox talks, pre-task planning, orientations, workplan reviews, and corrective-action discussions, they stay informed, identify changing hazards, clarify expectations, and make better decisions in the field. Attendance is important, but engagement matters just as much. The goal is not simply to fill a room—it is to have the right people involved, asking questions, sharing concerns, and following through on actions. By tracking participation and addressing repeated absences or communication gaps, we can strengthen teamwork, improve worker involvement, and keep prevention at the forefront of every workday. Show up. Speak up. Stay engaged. Every conversation is an opportunity to prevent the next incident.

A reminder to all sites: the challenge is not just about the quantity of MVPs submitted. Each project’s weekly score is based on Total Project Work Hours divided by Total Points. That means quality, participation, and earning points across the different categories all matter. Project teams, keep everyone engaged and make each observation count. Safety teams, please ensure all data is entered accurately and in a timely manner, so the weekly standings reflect each project’s efforts. Let’s finish the week strong.
