August RE Safety Newsletter MVP Challenge

Safety Newsletter August Update

September 09/23/25

Partners,

We had another solid performance in the month ofAugust while dealing with summer weather and increased insect and wildlife exposure. Unfortunately, we added another recordable in August bringing our total project recordable count to 6 for the year.

The MVP challenge has seen some shifting of the top performing projects with every project stepping up their game. The negative numbers hitting each project has seen a dramatic change with partners doubling down to hit their project specific goals. The use of the updated MVP’s has been increasing each month with more usable information coming in from Observations being created. Looking for the competition to continue to escalate as we approach the announcement of the RE MVP Challenge at RE National Meeting 2025 in Phoenix on October 2nd !

(higher the better)

Last Month:

•Excavations: 509 completed MVPs—great progress!

•Heat Illness Prevention: 256 uses—teams are keeping safety top of mind in the heat.

Required MVPs:

•Hand Injury Awareness: Hand injuries are trending up, making this a key focus. Let’s increase engagement in THA’s and Workplans and remind teams to stay clear of pinch, crush, and struck-by hazards.

•Human Behavior: Pay close attention to the human element. Observe tasks, ask the right questions, and use these insights to strengthen safe practices.

Observation Focus Areas

•Contributing Conditions: Housekeeping remains a top concern, often driving Equipment and PPE issues. Let’s step up in leaving work areas clean and hazard-free at shift’s end or handoff—every small action raises the bar for safety.

•Contributing Behavior: The main challenge continues to be 'Methods/Procedures/Rules' not followed. Stronger accountability will help close that gap and protect everyone.

•Positive Observations: On the bright side, those same procedures are also the top positive observations! Share these wins with your teams— highlighting "Planning, Training, Communication, PPE, and proper Use" shows we are building a strong culture of safe and consistent work.
