"Iron Rails to Green Trails" A Leadership Manhattan Beach Class of 2026 Project
Did you know Manhattan Beach’s Veterans’ Parkway, also known as the Greenbelt, was once part of the Santa Fe rail line? The LMB Class of 2026 is launching Iron Rails to Green Trails, a community history project that will install a permanent public sign across from the Joslyn Center along with a mobile friendly digital history hub. Together, these will share the story of the rail line, the 1980s running boom, and the community advocacy that transformed this former railway into the green space we enjoy today.
Residents are invited to learn more and support the project at a happy hour fundraiser at Culture Brewing, 327 Manhattan Beach Blvd. A gift of $20 at the door will gain you entry, one beer, appetizers, and will help support this project. Come share your stories!
When: Thursday, March 12
Time: 5:00pm-8:00pm
Location: Culture Brewing, 327 Manhattan Beach Blvd.
Cost: $20 donation.
This effort helps preserve local history while celebrating a space that supports recreation, wellness, and community connection. Learn more at https://leadershipmb.org/class-project/ All aboard!!
Drop in on one of the Saturdays, March 7 or 28 to the Joslyn Community Center for coffee and an opportunity to talk with tech savvy Mira Costa High School students. See page 13.

Each year, Los Angeles County Commission for Older Adults (LACCOA) and the Department of Aging & Disabilities (AD) requests nominations for their Annual Older Americans Recognition Day (OARD). The event seeks to identify and honor older adult community members for their dedication and meaningful contributions to our communities. The awards ceremony takes place in May.
This year we nominated Shala Smith for the Older Americans Recognition Award. Shala is a dedicated member of the Older Adult Program Senior Advisory Committee and a longtime community volunteer. For several years, she has generously taught Agility, Balance, and Coordination classes at no cost, helping older adults stay active and healthy. She volunteers at numerous Older Adult Program events, including the Hometown Fair, newsletter stuffing, and the Holiday Luncheon. Shala is currently one of the Board of Directors of the Manhattan Beach Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), where she has taught CPR classes. She had a full career as a registered nurse and healthcare administrator, and is a Certified RN Case Manager, and is currently a certified disaster service worker. She was a RN Homehealth and Hospice Coordinator and Health Education Instructor. Shala has changed the lives of many older adults in our program by keeping them active and engaged.

Drama from the start of birth
When mind is blank and free
Life’s spotlight waits at center stage
For who that you’re to be.
Reaching out, you dance and spin
I felt you touch my hand
In my lift that stopped tween floors
Of never never land.
In love, I see you pass screen tests
Your acting makes it so That part can’t last for very long
One act don’t make a show.
You walk down-stage to meet some guy
You do your parts on cue
You have to pay an orchestra
To keep the music new.
You’re acting like a loser
And messing up your mind
Your life’s an old rejected script
Where love’s another line.
I watch you from behind the stage
In my lift that stopped tween floors
A dressing room with lighted mirrors
And elevator doors.
My lift can move with honesty
It’s powered by the mind
I’m going to a secret floor
Stage robots cannot find.
So speak the role that gets you by Where programmed spotlights play
Then come back to my lift tween floors
We’ll skip the matinee.
