February Discussion: The Pioneers by David McCullough
As part of the Treaty of Paris, in which Great Britain recognized the new United States of America, Britain ceded the land that comprised the immense Northwest Territory, a wilderness empire northwest of the Ohio River containing the future states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. A Massachusetts minister named Manasseh Cutler was instrumental in opening this vast territory to veterans of the Revolutionary War and their families for settlement. Included in the Northwest Ordinance were three remarkable conditions: freedom of religion, free universal education, and most importantly, the prohibition of slavery. In 1788 the first band of pioneers set out from New England for the Northwest Territory under the leadership of Revolutionary War veteran General Rufus Putnam. They settled in what is now Marietta on the banks of the Ohio River.

Apple Wallet is like a little backpack on your iPhone that holds important “cards” for you. It helps you pay, get on planes or buses, and show tickets without needing paper.
Buy things in stores: You can add bank cards into Wallet so the phone can pay at the store. Then you just tap the phone on the card machine instead of handing over a plastic card.
Keep tickets and boarding passes: Wallet can hold tickets for airplanes, movies, and fun events so you don’t lose them. At the airport or theater, you just show the ticket on the screen and they scan it.
Hold passes and cards: It can keep lots of “passes,” like coupons or other gift cards. Each one is like a little card that shows up on the screen when you need it.
Ride buses and trains: You can put transit cards in Wallet to pay for buses or trains by tapping your phone. With Express Mode, you can just tap and go, without pressing any buttons first.
Send and use money with Apple Cash
There is a special card called Apple Cash that can hold digital money
