We are publishing an anthology – the seventh such anthology – of poems by members of the Manhattan Beach Poetry Circle, an Older Adults program of the Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department. This book also contains the work of Mira Costa High School poets, the winners of our ninth annual Circle Award for excellence in poetry composition by high school students.
Beginning in 2007, the Poetry Circle has met twice monthly to read and talk about poetry (and, often, other things). Our sessions are lively, funny, sometimes poignant, occasionally sad. We hope you will join us. Read your own work or that of favorite poets or just come and join the fun.
In addition to our meetings, the Poetry Circle works with Mira Costa High School students both on and off campus, hosts and attends public readings, and contributes monthly poems to the City’s newsletter.
The Poetry Circle meets:

April is National Volunteer Month—a time to recognize and celebrate the incredible individuals who give their time and talents to strengthen our community. We are especially grateful for our Senior Advisory Committee volunteers who truly wear many hats: Steve DeBaets, Diane Campisi, Linda Lytle, Wayne Powell, Jean Steinmentz, Laurell Schweneker, Audrey Hodgson, Dayle Eisenhauer and Shala Smith. Your dedication, leadership, and heart make a lasting difference. A special thank you to Audrey Hodgson and Claudia Elliott, who show up time and time again at every Lunch Bunch and Dine & Discover—your consistency and enthusiasm do not go unnoticed!
We’re also incredibly thankful for our amazing team of volunteers who gather each month to stuff 1,100 newsletters. Your behind-the-scenes efforts help keep our community informed and connected. Also, thank you to our Friendship Foundation and Hometown Fair volunteers. We would especially like to thank Shala Smith, our LA County Volunteer of the Year. Her Agility, Balance, and Coordination classes have grown in size each week. She is doing a great job of keeping our seniors fit, healthy, and engaged.
To all of our volunteers: thank you for your time, your kindness, and your commitment. You make our work possible, and our community stronger.

John C. Aliano is an award-winning producer, director and cinematographer as well as a professor of film production at the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. "Being Adolph Gasser" is his second feature documentary as producer and first as director. The film chronicles the life of Adolph Gasser, who looks back on a seventy-year career as a world-class camera repairman, WWII veteran, inventor, and best friend of nature photographer Ansel Adams, contributing developer of the first Nikon camera and a sales/rental/camera repair store owner who empowered other prominent Bay Area visual artists and inventors to succeed. As eminent domain, the internet and changing technologies threaten everything he has built, he struggles to find a way to keep moving forward.
When: Saturday, April 11
Time: 1:00pm-4:00pm (Q&A after the movie) Location: JCC, 1601 Valley Drive, Manhattan Beach Cost: Free. Walk-ins welcome. Light refreshments provided
Manhattan Beach residents who have young grandchildren living outside of the city may be eligible to apply for a Grandparent Inter District Permit for the 2026–27 school year. This permit allows qualifying students who reside in another district to attend Manhattan Beach Unified schools if their grandparent lives within MBUSD boundaries, creating a wonderful opportunity for grandchildren to learn and grow close to extended family. Families must submit an application and meet all eligibility requirements. If you have grandchildren who live locally and would like to attend our amazing District, we encourage you to explore this option and apply for the upcoming school year. Please see our website (https://www.mbusd.org/apps/pages/permits) for more information. You are also welcome to call Dr. Kerry Riccio Aguero, Director of Student Services, at 310-318-7345, who would be happy to help answer any questions.
