Dr. H. Dele Davies had two hours blocked off for MBJ. A nonprofit board meeting was waiting later that day, and across the Atlantic, an Ebola outbreak was building toward the point where the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit might be housing patients flown in from Africa.

A couple of days later, University of Nebraska’s Board of Regents voted to move forward with having dual governance of UNMC with Omaha Community Foundation. Davies’ path to the chancellor’s office runs through three continents. Born and raised in Nigeria, he left for England at age 15 to finish high school, then moved to Canada at age 17 for pre-medical studies at Mount Allison University. Medical school at the University of Toronto followed, then a pediatrics residency at The Hospital for Sick Children, also in Toronto, where a single rotation redirected his entire career.

Davies, the permanent ninth chancellor of the UNMC, runs a facility with real momentum.

Andee Hoig, MBJ’s publisher, has driven past the Regency Shopping Center construction for months on her regular trips to Whole Foods, watching Flower Child slowly take shape. By the time we walked in together at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 27, three days before the restaurant’s Tuesday opening, we were both ready to see whether the wait had been worth it. Vegetarian-forward concepts don’t always have staying power in Omaha, and we were rooting for this one.

The space delivered on first impression: bright, light and airy, with cheerful yellow and green paint setting an upbeat tone before we’d even reached the counter.

The preview was a complimentary VIP event doubling as a training run for the Omaha staff and included a dish off the menu, a drink and a dessert. Samples of each dessert, all gluten-free, sat at the ordering counter. Andee chose the lemon olive oil cake, pleasantly citrusy and moist. I went with the double chocolate almond brownie, banking on a rule that’s rarely failed me: glutenfree chocolate desserts tend to deliver.

For entrées, Andee ordered the steak, cooked a perfect medium, paired with cauliflower risotto and roasted broccoli. The broccoli carried a tart citrus snap from the lemon and held a pleasing al dente bite.

I skipped the protein, tofu tempted me briefly, and built a plate from three sides instead: sweet corn and quinoa, roasted heirloom carrots with za’atar, and the Mexican fruit stand.

The carrots were the standout. I first fell for this pairing at Gather in Omaha, where roasted baby carrots and za’atar arrived with pistachio crunch and a touch of spiced honey. Flower Child’s version skipped the crunch — roasted chickpeas would have been a smart substitute, adding protein and texture without a nut allergen — but the za’atar’s tart, citrusy notes still played beautifully against the sweetness of the carrots.

The Mexican fruit stand, consisting of watermelon, pineapple, cucumber, mint, tajin and mango chamoy, was a pleasant surprise. Cucumber in a fruit salad isn’t something I’d tried before, but it worked. Tajin’s chili-lime blend added punch without much heat, and the mango chamoy brought a sour note I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I did.

The corn and quinoa, on the other hand, needed a trip back to the kitchen before plating: strands of corn silk threaded through the dish. I picked most of them out with my fork, but a side dish shouldn’t require flossing unless it’s still on the cob.

We rounded things out with wine, plus tastes of lemonade and both iced green and black teas from the drink counter, all standard offerings, all serviceable.

Omaha is a steak-and-potatoes town, and Flower Child is a welcome change of pace. That doesn’t mean traditionalists are left out: steak pairs with smashed gold potato and roasted garlic and thyme, or with broccoli and the olive oil roasted vegetables, for diners who still want something close to the classic combination. Those after lighter fare can build a plate of sides as I did, or order a salad or wrap. The signature dish, though, is the Mother Earth bowl of ancient grains, sweet potato, portobello mushroom, avocado, cucumber, broccoli pesto, charred onion, leafy greens, red pepper miso vinaigrette and hemp seed — a fitting introduction to what Flower Child does best.

Noddle inks Marriott hotel deal

Noddle Companies has signed a franchise agreement with Marriott for a roughly 170-room hotel and 12 luxury condominiums on a parking lot between 16th and 17th streets on Mike Fahey Street in north downtown’s Builders District. The property will be part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection and is slated to open in 2028. Noddle also disclosed new leases anchoring the rapidly growing mixed-use district.

City closes on Home Plate purchase

The City of Omaha finalized its $18.6 million acquisition of the 25.1-acre Home Plate property from Union Pacific, clearing the way for a planned $140 million stadium and mixed-use development for the Union Omaha USL League One soccer team. About 12 acres go to the stadium, four acres to combined sewer overflow infrastructure and four to five acres remain for mixed-use buildout. The total project cost is roughly $332 million.

Pillen signs LB 1114 housing bill

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen held a ceremonial signing of LB 1114 in Blair, enacting the Community Improvement District Act introduced by Sen. Mike Jacobson. The law lets property owners voluntarily form districts that issue long-term taxexempt bonds to fund streets, sewers and infrastructure. Backers project home prices inside Nebraska CIDs running 15-20% below comparable greenfield projects.

OPPD picks Bellevue line route

Omaha Public Power District announced the selected route for its Southeast Bellevue Transmission Project at the June 2026 Board of Directors Committee meeting after community feedback and detailed evaluations. OPPD also said construction on Segment 3 of the North Douglas County Transmission Project will begin after July 4, with new foundations, poles and high-voltage transmission lines following completed Segment 1 work.

Omaha tops rent affordability list

Omaha ranked No. 2 among the nation’s largest cities on Forbes’ 2026 list of the best cities for renters, citing wage-to-rent ratios, vacancy and housing supply. The ranking arrives as the metro absorbs new multifamily supply across downtown, midtown and western Omaha, with apartment vacancy holding near 4% according to recent commercial real estate market data.

Industrial vacancy hits 2.2%

Cresa’s Summer 2026 Industrial Index ranked Omaha among the most landlord-favorable medium-sized logistics markets in the country, citing one of the lowest vacancy rates nationally at about 2.2% alongside modest rent levels. The report also flagged Dayton, Ohio; Providence, Rhode Island; and Akron, Ohio, as inland hubs gaining pricing power as coastal warehouse leverage cools.

Rural Mainstreet Index still weak

Creighton University’s Rural Mainstreet Index for June fell below growth neutral for the fourth consecutive month, signaling continued contraction across the 10-state rural Plains economy. Bankers cited softer farm income, tighter credit conditions and weaker farmland sales. Iowa’s companion index ticked up eight points, but the regional reading underscores persistent stress in agricultural communities.

Walnut Media acquires new station

Walnut Media announced today the acquisition of AM 590, marking a major expansion for the locally owned media company and the return of the legendary WOW call letters to the Omaha market. Beginning July 6, AM 590 WOW will relaunch as a full-service sports station featuring premier ESPN programming, local sports talk and enhanced regional coverage of University of Nebraska athletics.

Zeus acquires Omaha-based SEi

Zeus Fire and Security of Paoli, Pennsylvania, has acquired Omaha-based SEi, a 57-year-old security, fire protection, video surveillance, access control and monitoring company serving Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. SEi will keep its name and existing service lines under the deal. Zeus, founded in 2022, is building a national network of operators and plans to use SEi as its Midwest regional hub.

State revenue lags forecast

Nebraska General Fund tax receipts for May fell 7.8% short of revenue forecasts, marking the third consecutive month below projections and pushing cumulative fiscal year 2026 collections more than $177 million behind plan. When combined with the $6 million surplus from sessionend, OpenSky Policy estimates a potential $172 million shortfall for the fiscal year. Individual and corporate income tax categories drove the gap.

MCC opens SBDC at Millwork

Metropolitan Community College held a ribbon cutting for its Small Business Development Center at Millwork Commons, formally launching Nebraska’s second SBDC. The hub provides entrepreneurial programming, coaching and workshops and adds federal Small Business Administration-supported counseling capacity for Omahaarea founders. MCC had been operating the center in softlaunch mode since last fall and aims to expand outreach to underserved entrepreneurs across the metro this year.

GreenState Credit Union opens Papillion branch

GreenState Credit Union opened a Papillion branch this week at 14915 Crest Road on the northeast corner of 150th and Highway 370 in the Steel Ridge development. The Iowa-based credit union, which operates about 30 branches across Iowa, Illinois and the Chicago area, debuted in metro Omaha near 180th and West Maple and is also planning a 204th and Harrison location.

Alff leases 20,396-sf office

Alff Construction has leased 20,396 square feet of office space inside Catalyst Omaha, Cushman & Wakefield Lund Company announced after representing the tenant in negotiations. The lease lands as broader Omaha office demand stays soft and downtown vacancy hovers near 13%, with developers continuing to convert several downtown towers into multifamily housing.

Amazon Prime Air eyes Omaha

The Federal Aviation Administration released a draft environmental assessment for Amazon Prime Air package delivery operations from a new Prime Air Drone Delivery Center in the Omaha area. Amazon is seeking FAA authorization amendments to integrate the MK30 drone for commercial deliveries. Public comment runs June 23 through July 22, with the FAA evaluating noise, safety and airspace integration.

Douglas County opens RFP

Douglas County issued a request for proposal on June 24 for strategic communications, outreach, marketing and related support services for the City of Omaha under solicitation CI-2026-0087. Responses are due July 22. The procurement creates an opening for regional agencies and consultancies seeking long-term municipal contracts on public information, community engagement and city branding work.

Council delays wage ordinance

The Omaha City Council voted 7-0 to lay over a proposed citywide minimum wage ordinance to July 14, giving members more time to weigh business community objections against worker advocacy testimony. The Greater Omaha Chamber publicly opposed the measure. The layover follows hours of public hearing and signals continued debate over local authority to set wage floors above the state minimum.

Ford Storage joins Infinity Park

Ford Storage, a longtime Omaha-based logistics company, signed on as the newest tenant at Infinity Industrial Park, the Hubbell Construction Services-built complex anchoring industrial growth on the metro’s edge. Hubbell Realty separately completed Sagebrook, a 264home apartment and townhome community in La Vista, a milestone for the developer’s Nebraska multifamily pipeline as suburban Sarpy County housing demand continues to climb.

Scooter’s ranked in Yelp Top 50

Omaha-based Scooter’s Coffee placed 13th on Yelp’s 2026 Top 50 Fastest Growing Brands report, the chain’s third consecutive year on the list. Coneflower Creamery was named the country’s No. 1 ice cream shop in USA Today’s 2026 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, the fourth straight year the Blackstone-based scoop shop earned a nomination and its first time taking the top spot among 20 national finalists.

MBJ: You’ve told the story of standing in a children’s hospital on a rotation and thinking, “Wow, this is me.” More than three decades later, what skill enables you to have that same kind of clarity when you’re making decisions as chancellor?

Davies: I think being a pediatrician gives me the ability to really have a different level of empathy, because when you’re dealing with families, most children can’t really tell you specifically what’s wrong, and most parents feel the pain of their children as deeply as the children do. You really have to listen to parents, you have to listen to kids, even though they may not be able to tell you what’s going on. Often the way they say things, their affect, their demeanor tells you a lot about them. I believe it’s the same thing when we’re dealing with adults and trying to make decisions: being able to read a room, understanding when things are off and when things look good, and being able to understand where people are at.

MBJ: You spent three decades training in infectious diseases so you could serve in moments exactly like the one UNMC just had with hantavirus. Stripping away the institution, what did you personally see or decide in that response that someone without your training would have missed?

Davies: I have the privilege of being part of a containment team. I actually drill every quarter with our team members. I have been equally working with them toward that preparedness, being an infectious diseases doctor. There’s a lot of trust in the team because through those quarterly drills you get to know who you’re drilling with, you get to trust them, you get to rely on each other. I came in here often to be with them, like on weekends during the week, and I just saw they were there doing their work. They were all there, just being professional about things, problem-solving.

MBJ: Ebola cases caused by Bundibugyo virus affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda are on the rise. Having come off the hantavirus containment, is there anything you are mulling over right now?

Davies: If I were to get a call from the state, from the (Centers of Disease Control), from (Administration for Strategic Preparedness), or from the Secretary of Health, asking if we are ready to help take care of these patients, obviously I’d consult with the team but I’m 99.9% confident the answer would be yes, we are.

MBJ: You founded the Obesity Council at Michigan State University specifically because obesity doesn’t belong to one department; it’s nutrition, genetics, behavior, policy, the built environment, all at once. What’s the one cross-disciplinary fight you had to referee to get faculty who’d never worked together to actually collaborate?

Davies: Obesity was in the limelight at the time, and it dawned on me that we weren’t really doing much on campus in relation to obesity. We started a clinic focused solely on obesity, because when people think about obesity they see somebody who’s overweight and there are a lot of assumptions made — that they are lazy, that they’re gluttonous — without

understanding the full picture of that person’s life.

As a physician, it’s easy to give the advice that you need to lose weight. The patient would listen to you carefully but you might as well have spoken a foreign language to them because they have no idea what to do about it if all they have access to is a corner store selling high-density caloric foods, or a gas station, and if it’s unsafe for them to go out and exercise, and the only way to get around is by driving. By starting this clinic we were able to dig deeper into each family and understand the root cause of the obesity and help them problem-solve.

Maybe the most significant thing we did is we wrote a book, which I edited, that brought different disciplines together on obesity in childhood and adolescence. When I came to UNMC, I was able to get other faculty from across NU to contribute to the second edition of that book.

MBJ: You’re not drawing on clinical memory from decades ago; you’re still actively seeing patients right now, on top of running a $1 billion academic health center. What does keeping that up actually cost you and what’s stopped you from letting it go the way most chancellors eventually do?

Davies: I’ll start off by saying it’s harder, much harder to do. I’m not doing nearly as much as I used to, or as I would like. Right now I do maybe two to three weeks in the whole year and I’m only doing inpatients. To me it’s energizing. That’s why I went into medicine; I became a doctor because I wanted to take care of patients and there’s nothing that gives me greater joy than caring for children. That’s still the biggest passion of my life. I love being with residents, I love teaching medical students. I really just appreciate the opportunity to engage with those families, to bring my skills and expertise to them and reassure them that we know what we’re doing. Nothing gives me greater joy.

MBJ: You spent eight years writing a book arguing that human beings are designed the same way as the ancient Jewish Temple: body, soul and spirit mirroring its three chambers. You’re also a scientist who’s spent a career on evidence and data. What’s the actual relationship between those two ways of thinking when you’re sitting in a room making a hard decision? Does one ever override the other?

Davies: I have a strong faith. I believe in God and I believe that we’re not just flesh and mind. I believe there’s a spiritual component to who we are. I really think that helps me when I’m engaging with people, because I try to look beyond the physical, beyond the emotional, and try to get a better sense that there’s more to this person. I think it really helps me to be more empathetic to everybody, because it doesn’t matter what your religion, your background or your culture is, I still see a creation of God. I know the names of the people who clean my bathroom and I see a lot of dignity in them because I see them as God’s creation.

MBJ: You meet monthly with Student Senate leadership and sit in on full Senate meetings. What’s one piece of feedback from a student that actually changed something — a policy, a program, a decision — that you wouldn’t have changed otherwise?

Davies: One example is happening right now. We’re opening a brand-new residence hall, the first time we’ve ever really had a true residence hall on campus. Now we have a 300-bed residence hall that we’re going to be cutting the ribbon on in a couple of months, maybe in August. This came from sitting down with graduate students,

primarily, who were talking about how difficult it is to get housing around campus, many of them coming from out of state, California, Ohio, India, and don’t really know Omaha. So when they’re looking at neighborhoods, they have no concept of whether it’s a good place or not.

They basically said, “Why don’t we have student housing?’ We started doing surveys to test the demand and the Student Senate was involved through the whole process, planning it and giving input into it. MBJ: Carecubes started as UNMC research and is now a venture-funded company with a Series A behind it. When a UNMC innovation turns into outside equity, what does the university actually get back? Is Carecubes a model you’re trying to repeat, or a one-off?

Davies: It’s not a one-off. Carecubes came out of a question from smart people, here and at our federal partner ASPR (Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response). Instead of donning (personal protective equipment) every time you need to check on a patient with Ebola or hantavirus, what if we isolate the patient instead, in a transparent unit you can manage from the outside in? That idea got tested and improved with input from partners, including in East Africa where I was on the ground for it myself. In the last five years, about 19 companies have come out of UNMC research and about half of them left the state. We want to change that ratio.

MBJ: Early in your career, you worked in a lab under Dr. Allison McGeer and Dr. Don Low in Toronto. The lab was so different from others you’d seen that you’ve said you didn’t even realize you were working. What did they do

differently that you’ve tried to copy as a leader?

Davies: You just mentioned two of my incredible mentors and role models. They’ve been mentors to so many people in Canada who have gone on to be leaders in their own fields.

What separated them was that when I came into their lab, there were so many people doing so many interesting things and they were all supported by Don. Contrast that with another lab I was working in at the same institution, where the director controlled everything. Nothing could get done without his sign-off and if he didn’t agree with it, you couldn’t do it.

What I learned from Don and Allison was about giving people the freedom to innovate and not micromanaging them, allowing them to fail early and not being afraid to let them do things. Omaha Business Hall of Fame Gala

The Greater Omaha Chamber is proud to announce its 2026 Hall of Fame inductees. The Omaha Business Hall of Fame was initiated in 1993 as part of the chamber’s centennial celebration and has since become a hallmark event that celebrates business excellence and legacy. The inductees are nominated, then selected by a committee formed of Greater Omaha Chamber board members and previous Omaha Business Hall of Fame inductees.

The 2026 honorees will be formally inducted at a gala event Aug. 19 at Holland Performing Arts Center. The evening includes an hors d’oeuvres and cocktail hour, an induction ceremony and a dessert reception. Proceeds from the event support the Greater Omaha Chamber Foundation’s development of the next generation of Omaha leaders. Honoree achievements will also be commemorated in a permanent Business Hall of Fame exhibit at The Durham Museum.

The 2026 inductees

The 2026 inductees are a distinguished group of leaders whose exceptional achievements have shaped Omaha’s business landscape and enriched its community. This year’s honorees represent the highest caliber of entrepreneurial leadership, civic dedication and transformative impact.

The Honorable Jean Stothert

Mayor Jean Stothert has served the citizens of Omaha in elected office for 27 years.

Stothert was appointed, then elected, to the Millard Board of Education, serving 11 years including three as president. In 2009, she was elected to the Omaha City Council, representing District 5 in southwest Omaha. In 2013, she was elected Omaha’s 51st mayor, becoming the first woman to hold the office. She was reelected in 2017 and 2021.

As mayor, Stothert prioritized public safety, city finances, economic development, job and business growth, and improving the taxpayer experience so every citizen received excellent customer service when interacting with city government.

She championed numerous public-private partnerships that continue to contribute to the successful growth of Omaha.

Stothert has served on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency Board of Directors, the Omaha Sister Cities Association and the Smart Cities Initiative.

Following her retirement from elected office, she now hosts a daily call-in show on KFAB radio.

She is married to Dr. Kevin O’Rourke, and has two children and four grandchildren.

Derek J. Leathers

Derek J. Leathers is the chairman and chief executive officer of Werner, roles he has held since 2021 and 2016, respectively. Throughout his tenure at Werner, he has held integral roles in many facets of the organization, including the establishment of the company’s Mexico operations. Leathers has worked in the transportation and logistics industry for more than 30 years. Prior to joining Werner in 1999, he spent eight years at Schneider National, based in Mexico City, where he was one of the first foreign members of Mexico’s trucking association (CANACAR).

Leathers holds an economics degree from Princeton University. He serves as board chair of the American Transportation Research Institute, vice chair of the American Trucking Associations, and on the board of SkyWest Inc.

Locally, Leathers is an active member of the Greater Omaha Chamber executive committee and serves on the boards of the Omaha Development Foundation, United Way of the Midlands and Creighton University. A champion for youth, he founded the PlaySmart Leadership Academy. Derek and his wife, Nicole, recently chaired Zoofari 2025, raising record-breaking funds for conservation and education at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium.

David G. Brown

Steve Menzies

David G. Brown was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and earned admission to Dartmouth College. After graduation, he began a career in economic development in Michigan before being recruited to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he eventually became chamber president, then president of the Greater Greenville Chamber in South Carolina. In October 2003, he became president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber, a role he held until May 2022.

Under his leadership, the 3,000-member Omaha Chamber championed a strong business climate and advanced regional growth, leading statewide policy initiatives while its economic development partnership helped secure 972 projects, 56,433 new jobs and nearly $15 billion in new investment. Brown also helped launch Omaha 2040, a long-range regional vision centered on people, place and prosperity.

Following his retirement, Brown founded DGB & Associates and became lead consultant with Next Generation Consulting.

Brown has remained engaged in civic leadership, co-founding the Omaha Business Ethics Alliance, and chairing the board of the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE).

David and his wife, Maggie, have called Omaha home since 2003. They are the proud parents of Gregory and Elijah and grandparents to Cordelia.

For Steve Menzies, there is an easy commerce between his leadership in the corporate world and his dedicated philanthropy. A lifelong, selfmade serial entrepreneur, Steve began his career in a 10-by-10 office shortly after graduating from Columbia University with an engineering degree in mathematics. His commercial achievements include the creation of Applied Underwriters, North American Casualty and United Risk.

In 2006, Steve became a partner with Warren Buffett, becoming the youngest CEO within the Berkshire Hathaway organization and, in 2019, the only CEO to buy back from Berkshire. Today, his companies collectively form one of the largest private insurance organizations in the world.

Steve is equally invested in his employees, designing the architecturally award-winning home for his company’s 2,000-employee operations campus in Omaha, within his 500-acre mixed-use development known as Heartwood Preserve.

Steve is deeply committed to philanthropy, applying his resources and connections to solve complex social problems. Through his eponymous foundation, Steve has launched two charitable institutions: Global Reach, which helps Americans held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad, and the St. Francis Day Foundation, formed with Pope Francis to address the abuse of social technology.

Steve most recently received the José Juan de Olloqui Award in 2026 for Leadership in the Western Hemisphere.

G. Richard Russell & Carol Madson Russell

G. Richard Russell and Carol Madson Russell have demonstrated a longstanding commitment to business leadership, volunteerism and community involvement in Omaha.

Rick Russell was born in Yankton, South Dakota, and moved with his parents to Millard, Nebraska, where his father founded Millard Lumber and Grain. After graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and earning an MBA from Northwestern University, Rick joined Millard Lumber in 1973. As the company grew, he became president and then chief executive officer at age 43 following his father’s death.

Throughout his career, Rick remained active in civic and nonprofit organizations including Children’s Hospital & Medical Center and the Peter Kiewit Foundation.

Carol Russell earned a master’s degree in pathology while working as a medical technologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She later became widely recognized for her volunteer involvement and nonprofit leadership, receiving the Association of Fundraising Professionals International Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year Award in 2005.

Together, Rick and Carol Russell created a family culture grounded in service, generosity and civic engagement, which their children credit with shaping their own commitments to community service. They are the parents of three children and grandparents to seven grandchildren.

NORTH OMAHA INNOVATION DISTRICT TO REVEAL NEW SITE PLANS

On July 7, the regional business community will be able to view site plans, architectural concepts and corporate grant structures for the North Omaha Innovation District, located at 2909 Ames Ave. This physical site will serve as a corporate cornerstone for the area's targeted growth in high-demand, tech-adjacent sectors, logistics and light manufacturing.

In a podcast, Garry Clark, executive director of the Omaha Inland Port Authority (OIPA), revealed a substantial residential infrastructure commitment: the district's immediate roadmap integrates 170 housing units, strategically divided into 20 single-family homes and 150 multifamily units designed to support the local workforce and prevent neighborhood displacement.

The initiatives are reportedly propelled by a dual-funded state economic package totaling $120 million in grant allocations from the Nebraska legislature. While $30 million is directly seeding the technology, incubator and business infrastructure of the North Omaha Innovation District, the remaining $90 million is dedicated to the industrial Airport Business Park near Eppley Airfield.

Capital allocation is already transitioning rapidly toward execution. OIPA's development partners, including Burlington Capital and the Omaha Economic Development Corp. (OEDC), recently moved forward with critical property acquisitions, including commercial sites such as 5906 Abbott Drive within Enterprise Park. OIPA expects these industrial parks to secure high-volume corporate tenants capable of injecting roughly 150 immediate, high-wage jobs into the local economy.

To manage this rapid transition from planning to heavy physical construction, OIPA has aggressively expanded its executive bench. This internal scaling is led by the recent appointment of urban designer Manuel "Manne" Cook as senior director of planning and innovation, who is tasked with overseeing the alignment of local zoning, neighborhood equity metrics and land development pipelines.

Capital represent a significant structural pivot designed to preserve area real estate values while fostering local commerce. Moving away from a continuous, single-site industrial park model that initially drew intense scrutiny over potential residential displacement, Burlington Capital and the OEDC have officially committed to a multi-campus decentralized model. This plan focuses exclusively on transforming vacant, blighted or underutilized commercial parcels within the 3,000-acre port authority boundary.

Habitat for Humanity turns 50

Habitat for Humanity International will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a family-friendly event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at Lowe’s, 7525 Dodge St.

South Omaha Recovery Grants Advance

Three South Omaha Recovery Grant-backed projects along the South 24th Street corridor are moving forward, including the South Omaha Global Market, 29th and Jackson townhomes and International Bakery’s planned relocation to the former Joe Tess Place site.

Release Inc. Breaks Ground

Local nonprofit Release Inc. has transitioned its upcoming specialized childcare facility into the public eye, officially launching a capital campaign to bridge the remaining financial gap for a first-of-its-kind project in the metro area.

According to the organization’s website, the campaign will fund the Release Trauma-Informed Childcare Center, a facility engineered to serve children and working families impacted by trauma and the foster care system. Website documentation notes that traditional childcare models often struggle to accommodate the specialized behavioral and emotional needs of foster youth, prompting a multiyear research and design phase that led to this project.

Institutional backing and the finish line

Campaign trackers published on the Release Inc. website show the project carries a total price tag of nearly $2.3 million. Backed silently by early lead donors and regional foundations, the nonprofit entered the public phase of the campaign with 89% of the required capital — more than $2 million — already secured.

While the campaign page does not publicly list private individual donors, regional foundation tracking data reveals substantial institutional support from prominent local philanthropic organizations. Major foundational backers driving the capital campaign include The Sherwood Foundation, the Walter Scott Family Foundation and the Robert F. and Sharon L. Swartzbaugh Foundation.

The newly launched public phase targets a final $272,300 funding gap. The organization states online that these remaining funds will directly cover final construction costs, classroom furnishings, specialized equipment and early operational startup needs.

Community members looking to participate in the campaign can contribute via onetime donations or multiyear giving pledges directly through the organization’s website.

Project timeline and scope

The organization’s website outlines a general timeline including a public launch in June, construction kickoff in July and an expected opening day in February 2027.

A groundbreaking is set for July 9. Release Inc. successfully advanced its municipal planning phases for the property at 8345 Crown Point Ave. through the Omaha Planning Board. This paved the way for general contractor Lund-Ross Constructors to advance structural plans, officially filing the commercial Building Addition Permit (BLD-26-06068) on June 3, 2026, to clear the way for the facility’s 5,800-square-foot expansion and interior remodel.

Heartland Pride 2026: New Venues

Heartland Pride returns to downtown Omaha on July 17–18, launching a new chapter with the theme "New venues. New vibes. Same Pride."

In partnership with Omaha Performing Arts, the festival expands to venues including the Holland Performing Arts Center, Tenaska Center and Steelhouse Omaha, following years of collaboration with the CHI Health Center.

A growing majority of Americans say networking no longer feels like relationship building but rather a thinly veiled transaction, according to new survey data showing just how pervasive that discomfort has become.

A recent Express Employment Professionals-Harris Poll survey found 79% of U.S. hiring managers and 75% of job seekers say networking today feels more like a business transaction than a genuine personal connection.

At the same time, 84% of job seekers say networking is primarily about identifying job opportunities rather than building relationships, revealing a widening gap between what professionals want networking to be and what it has become.

Technology compounds the problem

Online platforms were supposed to make meeting people easier. Instead, survey respondents say they’ve introduced a new layer of artificiality.

Seventy-eight percent of job seekers and 84% of hiring managers say online networking platforms have made interactions more transactional. While 59% of hiring managers believe these platforms make authentic connections easier, most still describe the interactions as impersonal and opportunistic.

Seventy-two percent of job seekers say it’s difficult to form authentic relationships in environments where the goal feels transactional from the start. And 85% of hiring managers now evaluate networking contacts based strictly on their influence or usefulness.

Younger workers feel it most

Gen Z and millennials — the generations most fluent in digital networking — are also the most likely to describe it as shallow, performative or forced.

Nearly one in three Gen Z job seekers, 32%, say they reach out to old contacts for leads or references despite not having spoken with them for long periods. Among Gen Z respondents, 34% strongly agree that building meaningful connections is difficult in transactional environments, making them the group most likely to feel alienated by networking norms.

Separate national research by Freeman found 91% of Gen Z professionals say in-person events are essential to building real interpersonal skills, and more than two-thirds believe technology has left them feeling less connected at work.

A desire for something different

Nearly all hiring managers, 92%, and job seekers, 84%, agree networking remains critical to getting a foot in the door, but frustration with how it’s practiced is mounting. People want opportunity without feeling like a commodity, and 81% of hiring decision-makers agree authentic relationships are difficult to build when networking feels transactional.

Jacqelle “Jackie” Lane is the founder and wellness coach of Lane Wellness & Longevity, a wellness coaching and education company she launched in 2024.

Lane holds master’s degrees in educational administration and school counseling as well as bachelor’s degrees in English education and communication studies. The Ogallala native also has several professional designations, including National Academy of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer, certified nutrition coach, and certified health and wellness coach. She was named a 2024 Midlands Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree.

What sparked your interest in your field?

My path into wellness was anything but traditional. For more than 16 years, I worked in education, counseling, nonprofit leadership and community engagement, helping people identify their strengths and reach their full potential. Throughout my career, I became increasingly fascinated by the connection between physical health, mental wellbeing, performance and overall quality of life.

My own health journey became the catalyst for a new chapter. In my late 30s, I found myself navigating Hashimoto’s disease, thyroid dysfunction, digestive issues and hormonal imbalances. As I searched for answers I realized how many people were facing similar challenges without the education, support or resources they needed. That experience inspired me to pursue advanced training in nutrition, fitness and wellness coaching, and ultimately launch Lane Wellness & Longevity.

What does your job entail?

My role is equal parts educator, coach, strategist and advocate. I work with clients to identify barriers to optimal health and create sustainable plans focused on nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress

management, hormone health and lifestyle habits. I also spend a significant amount of time educating individuals, organizations and community groups about preventative health and longevity with the mission of helping people understand that lasting health is built through consistent daily choices rather than quick fixes.

I primarily work with adults who want to improve their overall health, energy, body composition, performance and quality of life. Many of my clients are women navigating hormone changes, thyroid conditions, digestive challenges, stress, weight management concerns or simply seeking to age with strength and vitality. I also work with busy professionals who are trying to optimize their health while balancing demanding careers and family responsibilities.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I view wellness not simply as a profession, but as a calling to help people become the healthiest, strongest and most vibrant versions of themselves. I love helping people realize they have more influence over their health than they often believe. Watching someone regain energy, confidence, strength and hope is incredibly rewarding.

I also enjoy helping people connect the dots. Fatigue, weight gain, digestive concerns, poor sleep, chronic stress and hormonal imbalances are often interconnected. When clients begin to understand how those pieces fit together, they become empowered to make meaningful and lasting changes.

How do you define wellness and what are its components?

To me, wellness is the intentional pursuit of living well in every dimension of life. While physical health is certainly important, true wellness extends far beyond nutrition and exercise. It includes mental health, emotional well-being, meaningful relationships, spiritual fulfillment, purpose, sleep quality, stress management and connection to community. When one area suffers, the others often follow. That is why a holistic approach is so important.

I often tell clients that wellness is not simply the absence of disease; it is the presence of vitality. It is having the energy, resilience and capacity to fully engage in your life and the people you love.

What has changed the most in your field?

The biggest shift has been moving from a reactive model to a proactive one. Historically, healthcare focused primarily on treating illness after it occurred. Today, there is significantly more interest in prevention, longevity and optimizing quality of life before health issues arise.

We are also recognizing how interconnected our systems truly are. Sleep, stress, gut health, hormones, nutrition, exercise and mental

health all influence one another. Technology has accelerated this transformation. Wearable devices, continuous glucose monitors, advanced laboratory testing, telehealth services, personalized nutrition strategies and data-driven health insights are helping individuals better understand and take ownership of their health.

What grade would you give Omaha for health and wellness?

I would give Omaha an A-. The city has made tremendous strides in creating opportunities for physical activity and healthy living. Omaha offers an impressive trail system, beautiful parks, recreational facilities, boutique fitness studios, strong tennis and pickleball communities, wellness-focused organizations, and a growing number of healthcare providers embracing preventative and functional approaches.

Where Omaha can continue to improve is in access and education. Not everyone has equal access to quality nutrition, preventative healthcare, wellness coaching or fitness resources. I would love to see more investment in nutrition literacy, stress management education, mental health support and healthy aging initiatives that reach all corners of our community.

What made you want to take the leap into business ownership?

I wanted the freedom to serve clients in a more personalized way while building a practice centered around prevention, education and empowerment. Starting my own business was both exciting and intimidating and the journey has been one of tremendous growth. Entrepreneurship teaches resilience very quickly; there are challenges, uncertainties and long hours but there is also incredible fulfillment in building something that aligns with your values and purpose. Every client success story reminds me why I took the leap.

Entrepreneurship is a full-time job and then some. Do you find it challenging to carve out time for your own health and wellness?

Absolutely. One of the biggest lessons entrepreneurship has taught me is that nobody is too busy to need wellness, but many people feel too busy to prioritize it. I understand firsthand how easy it is to let exercise, meal preparation, recovery and stress management slip when schedules become overwhelming.

Experiencing those challenges myself has made me a more empathetic coach. I have learned that success is not about perfection, it is about consistency. Small, sustainable habits practiced regularly are far more powerful than occasional bursts of motivation. That lesson has become a cornerstone of both my coaching philosophy and my own life.

The Fed Just Changed the Outlook, and it’s Not What Investors Expected

The June 17 Federal Reserve meeting delivered a clear message: policymakers are not worried about a weakening economy. The committee held rates steady but the more important development was the shift in expectations. Just a few months ago, investors were debating how many rate cuts might arrive in 2026. Today, the conversation has moved in the opposite direction.

The latest dot plot now shows a median expectation for one rate hike in 2026, a remarkable shift from a committee that had been signaling easier policy. More broadly, this is not just an American story. Central banks across much of the developed world have turned more hawkish as inflation remains stubborn and economic activity continues to exceed expectations. The global message is increasingly consistent: growth is holding up better than policymakers anticipated and inflation risks have not fully disappeared.

Many investors instinctively view “higher for longer” as bad news. We see it differently. Central banks cut rates when they are trying to rescue growth, support employment and counter rising recession risks. That is not the environment we see today. Policymakers are maintaining restrictive policy because economies are proving strong enough to withstand it. The most important force beneath the surface remains the surge in capital investment tied to artificial intelligence, data

centers, power infrastructure and the broader modernization of the economy. This is not simply market enthusiasm or speculative spending; businesses are deploying enormous amounts of capital into productive assets, supporting employment, productivity and economic activity across a wide range of industries.

Higher energy prices undoubtedly complicate the outlook and may keep inflation pressures elevated for longer than many expected, but the more important signal is what is happening underneath the surface. Companies continue to invest, labor markets remain firm and consumers continue to spend despite higher borrowing costs and rising energy prices.

Fragile economies do not absorb those pressures, they break under them. That is why we view this week’s hawkish shift as a sign of resilience rather than weakness. The rate cuts investors were hoping for earlier this year were never the prize; they were the fallback plan. For now, the better outcome remains the one we have: an economy strong enough that policymakers do not need to come to the rescue.
