YOUNG COMPANY PROMOTES PREVENTION, ACCESS AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

Sharnelle Shelton officially formed CoreScience BioDiagnostics (coresciencebiodiagnostics.com) as an LLC in late 2024, but the business didn’t begin serving the public until January of this year. Shelton already had enough confidence in her new venture, however, to enter the MAC Chamber Pitch Black Conference’s pitch competition this spring, expecting not to win but merely to gain some important experience and exposure through the process.

Shelton was selected as one of five finalists who pitched to a panel of judges in front of an audience at the live competition. She gained the pitching skills she had hoped for plus something she wasn’t counting on: winning the competition and a prize package valued at more than $50,000 that included $10,000 in cash as well as support through multiple businesses and organizations from bookkeeping and legal services to marketing and advertising.

City acquires Home Plate for stadium

The City of Omaha closed June 13 on an $18.6 million purchase of “Home Plate,” a 25-acre, comma-shaped property in North Downtown where Union Omaha’s new professional soccer stadium will be built. room areas. The site will also accommodate mixed-use development with apartments, retail and restaurants adjacent to Millwork Commons. Union Omaha, which has played at Creighton University’s Morrison Stadium, will lease the facility from the city.

Union Pacific retains access to six acres around its rails and event space through an easement. The purchase also enables infrastructure improvements and a street connection linking North Downtown with downtown Omaha via 10th and 11th streets.

Pitch and Purpose PITCH BLACK, BASEBALL AND THE FIGHT TO KEEP TALENT HOME

This is the third week of June, and for many in Omaha, that means one thing: baseball. The NCAA Men’s College World Series is in town, bringing with it nearly $150 million in economic impact, according to the Greater Omaha Chamber. Some local businesses, specifically those in North Downtown and close to Charles Schwab Field, will see direct impact, but in the end, everyone benefits through sales and restaurant tax revenue.

It also offers businesses, and businesspeople, in Omaha a way to network with hundreds, even thousands of peers and visitors. Hot Shops Art Center, one block from the ballpark, last weekend became host to the Leadoff Lounge for the fifth consecutive June, turning two days of College World Series traffic into something quieter and more useful: a gathering of the people who have been building Omaha’s business community. This year, every free-will dollar raised went to the 50 Mile March Foundation, which supports veterans facing homelessness. The foundation has grown from six walkers raising $25,000 in its first year to 166 walkers raising nearly $800,000 in 2025.

In our cover story, Sharnelle Shelton tells MBJ how she entered the MAC Chamber Pitch Black competition expecting to learn something. What she did not expect was to win, walking away with a prize package valued at more than $52,000 that was almost secondary to what she had already demonstrated: a business built in North Omaha around prevention, access and community health. Her work, her passion in building this company enabled her to stand in front of a panel of judges and compel them to pay attention. That is not a small thing. It is, in fact, the point.

Pitch Black, now in its sixth year, has become one of the more substantive entrepreneurship platforms in the Omaha metro. This year’s competition drew an all-female cohort of finalists, each of whom had something more than a pitch. They had a problem they were solving, often in communities that had been told the problem was unsolvable. Shelton put it plainly: where you live should not determine your access to health resources, prevention services or opportunity. CoreScience BioDiagnostics is her answer to that sentence. It is a good one.

The MAC Chamber is one of many organizations, the Sarpy County Chamber among them, with whom we are glad to work in service of bringing you the stories of businesses and businesspeople shaping this community.

The Sarpy County Chamber’s State of the County added to a conversation this publication has been tracking across multiple issues: Nebraska is not struggling to attract people. It is struggling to give them a reason to stay. Approximately 35,000 college graduates have left the state in five years. Speaker John Arch addressed it. Economist Ernie Goss addressed it. Karen Gibler framed it as cleanly as anyone: Nebraska’s greatest challenge may not be attracting talent but giving people a reason to stay. That sentence deserves to travel.

Pillen declares wildfire emergency

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen issued an emergency declaration June 10 for the South Fork Fire in Sioux County, which has burned nearly 9,000 acres between Crawford and Harrison. Two additional proclamations cover May wildfires in Dawes County and severe-weather damage May 15-18 across Buffalo, Fillmore, Gage, Jefferson, Nemaha, Richardson, Thayer, Thurston and Howard counties. The declarations activate state resources and the Governor’s Emergency Fund.

Argentic lends $67M on Westroads

Argentic Real Estate Finance provided $67 million in senior financing against Westroads Mall in Omaha on June 10. The package is paired with a $12 million mezzanine loan funded by Principal Life Insurance. The transaction marks one of the largest single-asset retail debt placements in the Omaha metro this year and signals continued institutional appetite for Class A regional mall paper.

OPPD restarts transmission build

Omaha Public Power District reported that Segment 1 construction on its North Douglas County Transmission Project is complete and Segment 3 work begins this month. Brink Constructors and Dietzel Enterprises are installing new foundations, poles and high-voltage transmission lines. The build is part of OPPD’s plan to add capacity for fast-growing Douglas County industrial and residential load.

ACI signs Kwik Payments deal

Omaha-based ACI Worldwide said June 11 that Kwik Payments has gone live on its Payments Orchestration Platform to support payment service provider (PSP) expansion across Africa. Kwik says checkout conversion uplift has topped 20% for connected merchants. The agreement broadens ACI’s footprint in high-growth African payments and adds recurring license revenue to its realtime payments segment.

Conagra targets cut

Evercore ISI on June 10 cut its Conagra Brands price target to $13 from $18, joining UBS, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley and Bernstein in trimming numbers on the Omahaheadquartered packaged foods maker. Shares trade near $13.20, close to a 52-week low. Conagra reports fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year earnings July 15; consensus rating sits at Reduce.

$26M streetcar shop opens

Omaha unveiled its $26 million streetcar maintenance facility, a 30,000-square-foot building on the eastern edge of downtown that will service the city’s coming fleet. The $421 million streetcar project is projected to attract more than $3 billion in new private investment along the corridor over 15 years. Test runs are scheduled before passenger service begins.

The Elowen hotel planned at Heartwood

Developers confirmed plans for The Elowen, a four-star boutique hotel at The Row in Heartwood Preserve. The 160room property will include meeting space, an outdoor terrace, a ground-floor restaurant and a top-floor cocktail bar open to the public. The hotel anchors the next phase of the masterplanned mixed-use community west of 144th Street.

Mutual of Omaha tower signage up

Mutual of Omaha has installed signage atop its new downtown headquarters tower this week. The crown signs mark a visible milestone as the insurer prepares to consolidate operations into the high-rise. The project is the largest private office tower built downtown in a generation and is expected to reshape Omaha’s skyline and central business district occupancy.

Inland Port assembles Ames site

The Omaha Inland Port Authority is assembling parcels near 30th and Ames streets as part of its North Omaha redevelopment strategy. The OIPA is positioning the area for mixed-use industrial and commercial development tied to its Airport Business Park initiative, which the authority projects could generate $1 billion in economic impact over 10 years across 3,000 acres.

Pillen opens Governor’s Summit signup

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen, the Nebraska Department of Economic Development and the Department of Agriculture opened registration June 10 for the 2026 Governor’s Summit, set Sept. 28-29 at the Younes Conference Center in Kearney. The event will gather state agency leaders, businesses and ag stakeholders. A second annual Youth Summit will run concurrently for high school participants.

ADU rentals open in North Omaha

Seventy-Five North has completed a new home plus an accessory dwelling unit in the Highlander neighborhood; both will become rental housing. The ADU design originated from AARP Nebraska’s ADU for You competition, was demonstrated at the Omaha Riverfront in 2025 and is now permanent. The project expands affordable rental supply in a high-priority redevelopment district.

Drury TIF moves downtown

Brokers Jeff Beals and Trenton Magid said the Drury Plaza Hotel TIF request is advancing through city review as the developer seeks tax-increment financing for the downtown property. The proposed deal would convert an existing structure into a Drury Plaza brand hotel, adding rooms ahead of the city’s expected convention business growth from the streetcar and Mutual tower projects.

Werner expands credit facility

Werner Enterprises said June 10 it has expanded the capacity of its receivables-backed credit facility, lifting available liquidity for the Omaha-based carrier. The move follows a FreightWaves 2026 Fraud Fighters Award announced June 9 for the company’s supply-chain security tools. Werner shares have climbed roughly 45% year-todate, closing near $43.40 on June 11.

UNMC opens 2027 plan for input

UNMC posted its draft 2027–2030 Strategic Plan June 10 for community review through June 16, ahead of June 29 Chancellor’s Council approval. The plan establishes campuswide goals and strategies developed with leadership and stakeholders, and will guide college, institute and business unit initiatives loaded into the medical center’s VisionSync planning platform.

DED highlights ed-tech startup

The Nebraska Department of Economic Development on June 8 spotlighted Omaha ed-tech startup Short Answer, which helps students improve writing while limiting AI overreliance. Short Answer received a 2022 State Trade Expansion Program grant and a 2025 LaunchLNK grant from DED. Founders attended the 2025 International Society for Technology in Education conference in San Antonio.

Beef-packing closures feared

A new Investigate Midwest report released June 10 warned that historically low U.S. cattle numbers are raising the risk of another regional beef-packing plant shutdown. Nebraska, with the country’s largest beef-processing footprint, would feel direct payroll and ag supply-chain impact from any closure. Producers and packers are tracking herd-rebuild timelines and federal trade actions for relief.

Werner wins green-fleet rank

Werner Enterprises was named a 2026 Top Green Fleet by Heavy Duty Trucking magazine, the company said in a June 11 announcement. The award recognizes the Omaha carrier’s investments in lower-emissions tractors, idle-reduction technology and route optimization. Werner participated in the Wells Fargo Industrials & Materials Conference June 9 in Chicago alongside other transportation issuers.

Celebrate 250, Independence Day festival

The Hundred Block Community Collective will host Council Bluffs Celebrates 250, a free Independence Day weekend festival July 3 from 3-11 p.m. on Historic 100 Block of West Broadway, featuring live music, food vendors and a synchronized drone show finale. (40 words)

I ultimately decided to participate because I believed CoreScience represented an opportunity to showcase a different kind of healthcare business model: one centered around prevention, access and community impact.”

Spectrum of services

CoreScience BioDiagnostics is a prevention-based workforce and health infrastructure company focused on making diagnostic, wellness and employer testing services more accessible within underserved communities. The company, located in North Omaha at 3824 N. 30th St.,

provides drug testing, DNA testing for relationship verification or health profiles, wellness screenings, employer solutions and harm-reduction services under its umbrella of offerings.

CoreScience BioDiagnostics’ confidential testing services for individuals are designed to help those customers gain clarity and make informed health decisions. The company supports clients with reliable workforce screening solutions like Department of Transportation-compliant drug testing programs, background checks, credit checks and workplace policy support to help maintain safe and compliant workplaces.

“What makes CoreScience different is that we combine traditional diagnostic services with community-centered prevention initiatives,” Shelton said. “While many companies compete on scale, we compete on access. In addition to testing services, we provide free Narcan distribution, fentanyl test strips, workforce support services and community education directly within North Omaha.”

Family and community

CoreScience BioDiagnostics emerged from a combination of Shelton’s professional experience and personal observation.

“After more than 20 years in healthcare and seeing firsthand the gaps in access, prevention and community-based healthcare resources, I wanted to build a company that brought those services directly into the neighborhoods that need them most,” she explained, adding that the name of the business honors her uncle, Corey Shelton, who passed away in November 2023. “His name is in the core of our business.”

Family and community are also at the core of Shelton’s company, and her life reflects that commitment.

“I’m a proud boy mom, so in my spare time you can usually find me somewhere in the stands supporting my three sons in the activities they love,” she said. “Between basketball games, track meets and theater performances, they definitely keep me busy and grounded outside of work.”

The Omaha native graduated from Benson High School and earned an associate degree in health information management systems from Metropolitan Community College. Her professional experience in the healthcare sector has spanned claims, emergency medical communications, healthcare operations, provider support and leadership.

She was recognized by Midlands Business Journal as one of its 40 Under 40 honorees in 2025. Shelton is also an elected official, serving as board chair for the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties.

Solving real-world problems

Shelton said one important factor in winning the Pitch Black competition was successfully demonstrating the unique nature of CoreScience BioDiagnostics’ particular set of services and how they differentiated the company from others in its sector.

“I believe our business stood out because we are solving multiple real-world problems simultaneously. We are creating access to healthcare services, supporting employers, addressing prevention and harm reduction and building economic opportunity, all while operating directly within the community we serve,” she said.

There’s room for evolution, Shelton added. CoreScience started with a vision centered around testing services but transitioned into a broader community health and workforce resource.

“Over time, we expanded into prevention initiatives, employer partnerships, wellness testing and educational outreach programs because the needs within the community continued to grow,” she said. “In the coming years, I see CoreScience continuing to expand its employer partnerships, wellness offerings and prevention initiatives while also increasing access to healthcare services in underserved communities. Long term, I would love to see the CoreScience model franchised into other underrepresented communities across the country so that more neighborhoods have direct access to prevention-based healthcare resources.”

Meaningful connections

The CoreScience BioDiagnostics team continues to grow, Shelton said, and is also supported by strong community partnerships.

“I would especially acknowledge the mentors, advisors and community leaders who have helped support our growth, including healthcare professionals, business leaders and local organizations invested in improving health equity and workforce access,” she said.

The company has deepened its community roots further by sponsoring a family-friendly community event on June 6 called the Heal the Block 5K Walk, which took place along the North Omaha/Paxton Boulevard Trail. The walk was created to bring awareness to health disparities, prevention and community wellness while encouraging people to literally walk through and invest in the North Omaha neighborhoods they serve.

Shelton said she’s also made meaningful connections as well as accessed resources through her participation in the MAC Chamber (formerly Midlands African Chamber) Pitch Black Conference, which is centered around fostering local BIPOC entrepreneurs through an expo, panel discussions, networking opportunities and a variety of workshops in addition to the pitch competition (wepitchblack.com). She’s also already starting to take advantage of some of the first-place award elements.

“We have already begun exploring several opportunities connected to the prize package. I believe the most valuable aspects will be mentorship, visibility, strategic partnerships and access to business development resources that can help us scale sustainably and expand our impact,” she said.

Since its establishment in 2020, the MAC Chamber (formerly Midlands African Chamber, Inc.) has annually hosted the Pitch Black Conference, a business conference, expo and pitch competition in Omaha to foster and empower BIPOC — Black, Indigenous and people of color — entrepreneurs in the Midwest. The conference features a curated business marketplace/expo, panel discussions, workshops and opportunities to network and increase visibility.

Pitch Black (wepitchblack.com) supports promising emerging businesses by helping them connect to funding and other critical resources as well as mentorship opportunities, but it also gives a special boost to the pitch competition finalists, who compete for substantial cash prizes and highvalue technical, marketing, legal and other assistance as well as business coaching.

More than competing

“For me, participating was about more than just competing,” said second-place winner Shinnice Preston of Zuri and Me, whose small business specializes in high-quality bonnets and hair-protective headwear. “It was about stretching myself, challenging myself personally and professionally, and seeing how far I could take something that started as such a personal passion project. I wanted to represent not only my business, but also the story and purpose behind it.”

Third-place winner Regina Tate, RN, founder and program director of the Art of Homecare Training Center, said the experience of pitching was as important as the prizes. It also raised the profile of her business, which addresses a critical workforce need — CNA and Medication Aide training programs — while creating opportunities for individuals seeking meaningful careers. She explained that every graduate who finds viable employment becomes part of a larger mission of caring.

“I learned about the Pitch Black competition through Omaha’s entrepreneurial community and was drawn to its mission of supporting and elevating Black-owned businesses,” she said. “I decided to participate because it offered an opportunity to share our vision, gain valuable feedback, and connect with other entrepreneurs who are working to create positive change in their communities.”

The first-place winner was CoreScience BioDiagnostics, a clinical laboratory and health diagnostics company founded by Sharnelle Shelton. She received a prize package valued at more than $52,000 that included $10,000 in funding as well as marketing support from Ervin & Smith, Midlands Business Journal and The Omaha Star; bookkeeping support from D & K Financial; legal services from 402Legal; QuickBooks training from Nebraska Enterprise Fund; financial planning with MVEST Wealth; MAC Chamber membership and executive coaching sessions with Pitch Black Finale judges; and office space at Modus Coworking.

competition’s Investors Pick, which came with an additional $5,000 in funding. The upcycling platform teaches people of all ages how to sew, tailor and repair their own clothing. Fifth place was awarded to Nava Living Co., an herbal tea brand founded by Shatice Jones, and included a prize package valued at $1,650 that included $1,000 in business funding.

Second- through fifth-place winners also received additional support from many of the same providers as the first-place winner, although to a lesser extent.

Leap of faith

Preston said she found out about Pitch Black through her association with the MAC Chamber (midlandsafricanchamber.com), which offers diverse benefits, programs and events throughout the year in addition to the competition. She first connected to the organization through her participation in Melanin Market Omaha (melaninmarketomaha.com), an annual indoor/outdoor market for BIPOC vendors created by Ty and Dell Nared to amplify the voices of minority-owned businesses and organizations by giving them a platform to showcase their goods and services. Sokpoh approached Preston at Melanin Market Omaha last summer, encouraging her to apply for the MAC Chamber Accelerator program.

“At that time, I was simply focused on growing Zuri and Me and my brand while balancing motherhood, family life and my full-time career. I had built my business slowly and intentionally over the years, mostly during late nights and weekends, so stepping into something like the accelerator felt like a big jump outside of my comfort zone,” Preston said. “I decided to take a leap of faith and apply for the fall cohort. Over those 12 weeks, the program really stretched me. I graduated from the program in

The risk was worth it, she said.

“After three rounds of judging and weeks of preparation, becoming one of five finalists was already a huge accomplishment for me. Pitch Black stretched me in ways I didn’t expect.

Preston said that finishing second in the competition was satisfying.

“Finishing as runner-up honestly still feels like a win to me. I’m proud that I showed up, stayed committed, and saw it all the way through. I’m proud of the growth that came from it and the example I was able to set for my children,” she said. “This experience also reminded me how important community and support really are. I’m incredibly grateful for the relationships and opportunities that came from Pitch Black.”

Tate said she sees the big-picture value of her Pitch Black experience.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in Pitch Black and represent a business that is committed to workforce development, community impact and expanding opportunities for others,” Tate said. “I hope our story encourages others to pursue their goals, invest in their communities and never underestimate what is possible when people are given the tools and opportunity to succeed.

THE LEADOFF LOUNGE BRINGS OMAHA TOGETHER FOR VETERANS

Every June, Omaha transforms. The streets around Charles Schwab Field fill with fans from across the country, hotels fill and the city’s restaurants run three-hour waits. For some Omahans, it’s a reason to leave town. For Blake Martin, it was the best two days of the year.

For the fifth consecutive June, Martin — franchise consultant and founder of FranNet of the Heartland — opened the doors of the Hot Shops Art Center at 13th and Nicholas for the Leadoff Lounge, an invitationonly College World Series tailgate that has quietly become one of Omaha’s most distinctive professional networking events. This year, June 12 to 13, the event ran 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. both days, and every free-will dollar raised went to the 50 Mile March Foundation.

“This is our way of thanking the community for being there for us,” Martin said. “You start seeing those first happy faces and they walk up and ask, ‘Well, how much do we owe?’ ‘Nothing.’ ‘Should we pay the band?’ ‘No.’ ‘Is there a charge for the pulled pork?’ ‘Nope. All yours.’”

The setup was deliberately unhurried: live music from JB Acoustic, craft beer on tap from Vis Major Brewing (which branded a custom Leadoff Lounge Lager for the occasion,) smoked meats and fresh-grilled burgers on a live grill, CWS action on the big screen, all of it under shade trees one block from the ballpark. The event was indoor-outdoor, rain or shine. Security arrived in character wearing umpire uniforms.

Community effort

Eleven steering committee organizations made it possible: FranNet, PJ Morgan, Oracle Insurance, First Priority Insurance, Crestcom, Paylocity, Blackstone Insurance, Charter West Bank, The Syndicate Agency, Merch Club and Larsen Supply Co. Rotella’s Italian Bakery donated all breads and buns. Larsen Supply Co. covered non-food items. Nebraska Star Beef donated the burgers and hot dogs. Vis Major Brewing handled the beer. JB Acoustic provided live music. The generosity of those donors was the point; it meant nearly every dollar raised went directly to the 50 Mile March Foundation.

The venue was no accident. Hot Shops Art Center, a 92,000-square-foot working artist community housed in a 120-year-old building, was among the first organizations to bet on what North Downtown Omaha could become long before Schwab Field, long before the Mastercraft building, long before the Dizzy Mule filled 170 units in seven weeks. Travelocity has ranked it the No. 2 place to visit in the Omaha area.

“They took a chance on that part of downtown when nobody else had yet,” Martin said. “They were always willing to bet on what could be better in our community. For me, that’s everything that my business is supposed to be about.”

Tim Barry, co-founder of Hot Shops and a ceramics artist and instructor who has called the building home for 26 years, sees the same parallel from the other side. “The only reason you still have your fancy corner office downtown is, yeah, you know something about your field,” Barry said, “but your true talent is you’ve been able to react creatively to whatever’s come in front of you.”

During the Leadoff Lounge, that creativity was on full display. While guests watched baseball and networked over cold beer, working artists were down the hall in their studios. This year, the glass studio offered a hands-on experience unique to

CWS week: visitors could stamp a blob of molten glass, leaving an impression of a baseball that reads “Omaha.” “It’s not a parking-lot tailgate,” Barry said. “It’s in one of the coolest buildings we have downtown.”

Community of Hope

The charitable component added weight to the celebration. The 50 Mile March Foundation, selected unanimously by the steering committee, empowers veterans facing homelessness and mental health challenges by funding grants to nonprofits across the Omaha metro. Volunteers from the foundation ran the event. All free-will donations went directly to the cause, helping to grow the Community of Hope campus off Capehart Road, a place designed to help veterans become empowered, contributing members of the community again.

The foundation has grown from six walkers raising $25,000 in its first year to 166 walkers raising nearly $800,000 in 2025.

Connor Kavulak, the foundation’s external relations coordinator, said the event was less about a hard ask than about telling a story. “When people hear the mission of the 50 Mile March, people want to donate,” Kavulak said. “One of the most shocking things is people don’t realize how many homeless veterans there are just in the Omaha area.”

Martin frames the cause the way the foundation’s own veterans do. “They don’t want a handout. We just need to give them an opportunity to get a hand up so they can start doing what they do best, which is making an impact in our community and our country. Because they fought on the front lines for us, it’s our turn to provide a little reciprocity.”

For those who received an invitation — clients, colleagues and collaborators who have been part of building Omaha’s business community — the event was a thank-you note written in cold beer and live music.

For the veterans the 50 Mile March serves, it was something more.

“It’s almost uncanny,” Martin said of Omaha, “how quickly and how universally people will raise their hand, jump up and contribute.”

The Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual State of the County event on May 13, bringing together business leaders, elected officials and community stakeholders for discussions on workforce development, economic competitiveness and the future growth of Sarpy County and Nebraska.

One of the major highlights of the event was an update from Chris Kriegler of Metropolitan Community College on the future MCC Sarpy County Campus development near Highway 370 and Highway 50. The 145-acre site is planned

investment and high-paying jobs. He also highlighted LB 1165, a business incentive package designed to attract employers offering wages above $90,000 annually through performancebased tax incentives tied to job creation and employee retention.

During both his presentation and audience Q&A session, Arch addressed questions surrounding Nebraska’s budget outlook, workforce retention, property tax reform and the state’s ability to remain competitive with neighboring states. He emphasized that long-term economic growth will require stronger collaboration between government, education,

as a long-term mixed-use destination focused on workforce education, community partnerships and industry collaboration.

Kriegler shared plans for two major workforce training facilities expected to anchor the development. The proposed First Responders Education and Training Center would provide specialized regional training opportunities for firefighters, EMS personnel and other emergency responders. Plans for an Advanced Diesel and Logistics Training Center were also discussed as part of efforts to address workforce shortages in transportation, logistics and skilled trade industries.

Nebraska Speaker of the Legislature John Arch provided an in-depth recap of the 2026 legislative session, focusing heavily on Nebraska’s long-term economic competitiveness, workforce retention and tax structure. Arch discussed the state’s ongoing property tax challenges, workforce shortages and the growing need for Nebraska to compete more aggressively for business

businesses and local communities, particularly as Nebraska works to retain young professionals and expand career opportunities statewide.

Additional conversations throughout the event focused on Good Life District projects currently underway across the region. Paula Dennison with the City of Gretna and Harrison Johnson with the City of Bellevue discussed large-scale developments planned in their communities that are intended to attract tourism, generate economic activity and support longterm regional growth.

Economist Dr. Ernie Goss concluded the event with a regional and national economic outlook, touching on inflation, interest rates, tariffs and workforce trends. While acknowledging continued uncertainty in the national economy, Goss pointed to Nebraska’s quality of life, safety and community strengths as long-term advantages for attracting residents and businesses.

COMPETING FOR TALENT, INVESTMENT AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

A consistent theme throughout the State of the County event was the growing importance of long-term economic competitiveness for Nebraska’s future.

Speakers emphasized that workforce shortages, population retention and business growth are increasingly interconnected challenges facing communities across the state. Discussions repeatedly returned to the idea that Nebraska must focus not only on attracting new businesses, but also on creating enough career opportunities to retain young professionals and families long-term.

According to presenters, approximately 35,000 college graduates have left Nebraska over the last five years, reflecting broader concerns about workforce retention and career mobility. Leaders noted that economic growth will require collaboration between government, education, businesses and local communities rather than relying on any single sector to

solve these issues independently.

Several speakers also highlighted the importance of shifting Nebraska’s mindset from maintaining the status quo to actively competing with neighboring states for talent, investment and economic development opportunities.

While tax policy and state budgeting remained part of the conversation, many discussions focused more broadly on quality-of-life factors that influence long-term growth, including housing, infrastructure, workforce training and community amenities. Speakers pointed to Sarpy County as an example of a region that continues to invest in those areas while positioning itself for future expansion.

The event ultimately reinforced a shared message among presenters: Nebraska’s future growth will depend on its ability to create opportunities, retain talent and remain competitive in a fast-changing economy.

Nasdaq Drops Over 4%: What Rising Interest Rates Mean for Investors

If you looked at your account last Friday and felt your stomach drop, you weren’t alone. Just days after reaching a fresh all-time high, the Nasdaq suffered its worst one-day decline since the spring of 2025, falling more than 4% in a single session. Moves like that can feel unsettling, especially when they seem to come out of nowhere, but this is the price of admission for long-term investors.

Markets don’t move in straight lines and periods of volatility aren’t a sign that something is broken; they’re a normal feature of investing. In fact, a pullback of a few percent after a strong run higher is often a sign of a healthy market, not a dangerous one. That’s why we build portfolios with the expectation that weeks like this will happen. The goal isn’t to avoid every decline, it’s to avoid making emotional decisions because of them.

So, what does get my attention? Not the selloff itself, but the reason behind it: interest rates. Last week’s jobs report was surprisingly strong, with employers adding roughly twice as many jobs as economists expected. Under normal circumstances, that would be unambiguously good news. But strong economic data also reduces the urgency for the Federal Reserve to cut rates and the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.54% in response.

Higher rates matter because they influence nearly every corner of the economy. They

affect mortgage payments, auto loans and business borrowing costs. They also give investors a more attractive alternative to stocks, particularly high-growth technology companies whose valuations depend heavily on future earnings. The market’s reaction last week wasn’t about economic weakness; it was about adjusting to the possibility that rates may remain elevated longer than investors had hoped.

Yet there’s an important silver lining in that story. Rising rates are not the result of a weakening economy, they’re the result of a resilient one. Hiring remains strong, consumers continue to spend, and demand is still running ahead of supply in many parts of the economy. That strength helps explain why inflation has been slow to return to the Fed’s target. In many ways, higher rates act as a pressure-release valve, cooling demand enough to prevent the economy from overheating while allowing the expansion to continue. A controlled simmer lasts longer than a rolling boil.

None of this changes our investment plan. In fact, it reinforces the value of a diversified portfolio built around long-term goals rather than short-term headlines. If rates are rising because the economy remains healthy, that’s a challenge markets can adapt to and ultimately a far better problem to have than the alternative.

TRADE GROUP APPLAUDS SIGNING OF AG DATA PRIVACY LAW

Earlier this month, the Nebraska Corn Growers Association (NeCGA) celebrated the signing of LB 525, landmark legislation granting farmers ownership of their agricultural data. NeCGA played a significant role in advancing the bill, led by Senator Mike Jacobson (Dist. 42) and prioritized by of Gov. Jim Pillen, during the 2026 legislative session.

Nebraska is the first state in the nation to enact legislation explicitly recognizing farmer ownership of agricultural data. LB 525 ensures agricultural producers retain ownership of key data generated on their operations, including agronomic, climate, weather, land, livestock, management and sustainability data. The law also prohibits companies from selling that data without the farmer’s written consent.

NeCGA worked closely with lawmakers and agricultural partners throughout the session to help move the legislation forward and ensure it reflected the needs of Nebraska farmers.

NeCGA President Michael Dibbern testified in support of the bill before the Legislature’s Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee as part of those efforts.
