The ACE of Bennington VW SHOP BUILT ON ONE GOLDEN RULE BY DAISY HUTZELL-RODMAN

Volkswagens were once known for being a cheap vehicle to drive. A standard 1963 Volkswagen Beetle (the variety shown in Disney’s “Herbie, the Love Bug”) cost around $1,500 brand new, a number that is equivalent to about $15,500 today. In early July, a resale site known as The Samba showed 1963 Beetles for sale from a running vehicle for $11,000 to a restored convertible for $39,750. “You can spend a lot of money restoring a car for a car show, which might be a $60,000 paint job, a $15,000 engine, and an $8,000 interior,” said Greg Sloma, the retired president of Data Transmission Network. “Or you can restore it in the sense of just fix what you’ve already got.” Those who want to convert their classic Volkswagen (which frequently tops out at 60 mph going south with help from a southern wind) into a racing vehicle can find a specialized engine kit from parts dealer CB Performance, ranging from about $6,000 to $7,000. If they don’t know how to fix it, they may need to travel to find a shop. While there are many places that can tune a VW engine, there aren’t many full-restoration shops in the United States
