Persistence Pays HEATH
MELLO’S
VISION FOR GREATER OMAHA TAKES SHAPE
BY DAISY HUTZELL-RODMAN
Heath Mello doesn’t give up easily. As president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber, he’s built a career on persistence — a quality he traces back to watching “The Shawshank Redemption,” among other favorite films that center on never giving up.
That resilience has shaped Mello’s approach since he took the helm of the chamber in August 2023, inheriting an organization that needed steadying after a tumultuous period. In his first 90 days, he made difficult decisions about internal operations, external stakeholder engagement and the chamber’s financial recalibration. The approach worked, and today he leads an organization of nearly 3,000 members focused on ambitious economic development goals through the chamber’s Omaha COMPETES agenda — a comprehensive strategy to modernize Nebraska’s economic development tools, enhance site readiness and grow the region’s workforce competitiveness.
A key component is the “Back to Omaha” campaign, which targets people from the region to consider restarting their careers locally, capitalizing on the transformation the metro has undergone over the last decade. The chamber’s workforce excellence team has also expanded its work on second-chance hiring, connecting formerly incarcerated individuals with employers facing labor shortages — a priority Mello learned about during his eight years in the Nebraska Legislature, including four as appropriations committee chairman.
Before joining the chamber, Mello also served in roles at Metropolitan Community College and the University of Nebraska system, building expertise in consensus building and innovative financing that now informs his chamber leadership.
MBJ sat down with Mello for a Q&A to give readers a closer look at this leader.

TOP THINGS TO KNOW
OPPD technology, system planning upgrades reported
Omaha Public Power District reported to its board of directors in January that the utility is making good progress with its advanced metering infrastructure initiative and associated technology upgrades. Since summer, OPPD has installed more than 11,300 new meters as part of the AMI pilot program. The devices will provide more information to the utility about power outages as they happen to facilitate faster and more efficient response. Meters will be installed over the next few years and customers will be apprised as their neighborhoods are affected. An upgraded app, MyOPPD, is also expected to launch in the near future.
24 penitentiary inmates recognized SCC program
Starting with the spring 2024 semester, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services partnered with Southeast Community College to expand access to higher education across five NDCS facilities/locations through SCC’s prison education initiative, Unlocking Potential With Academic Resources and Development (UPWARD). The program provides incarcerated students with pathways to college credentials, workforce skills and long - term career opportunities.
Twenty-two students earned a certificate in business after completing a six - course program covering accounting, business fundamentals, management and communication. Two other students, who had begun their studies prior to incarceration, applied SCC classes toward the completion of associate of applied science degrees in integrated technology and welding technology.
In July 2024, SCC became the first institution in Nebraska — and one of the first nationwide — to receive U.S. Department of Education approval for a Pell - eligible Prison Education Program, following the 2023 reinstatement of Pell eligibility for incarcerated students. This approval significantly expands access to postsecondary education for individuals in NDCS custody. Classes are delivered in person and follow a schedule similar to SCC’s other campuses.
Supporters of inmate education programs say it reduces recidivism, improves public safety and saves taxpayers money by equipping incarcerated individuals with skills for successful reentry.
Former state senator announces candidacy
Former Nebraska state senator Lynne Walz has announced she will run for Nebraska governor. She is the only Democrat who has entered the field thus far with the filing deadline for candidacy being March 2 for the May 12 Nebraska primary. The announcement follows a two-month exploratory committee and statewide listening tour. Walz is a Fremont resident who served in the Nebraska Legislature from 2017 to 2025 representing District 15 comprised of Dodge County and a portion of western Douglas County. In addition to the incumbent Jim Pillen, Republicans who have declared candidacy include former Randolph City Administrator Sheila Korth-Focken and York small-business owner Jacy Todd.
Three new retailers join Midtown Crossing
Following the late 2025 opening of Château Vin Wine & Spirit Boutique, in early February Midtown Crossing will welcome two additional new businesses: Genesis Health Club and a coffee, wine and beer establishment called Base Kamp. Midtown Crossing is located along Farnam Street east of 33rd Street, near Turner Park and the Blackstone District.
Department of Labor announces grant recipients
The Nebraska Department of Labor has awarded a total of $250,000 in manufacturing modernization and workforce development grants to five Nebraska businesses. NDOL said in an announcement the pilot program awarded businesses using innovative approaches to increase productivity and build workforce. Each business will receive $50,000 and utilize matching funds to complete their projects. The recipients are Distar Industries LLC of Columbus; Aurora Boardworks in Aurora; Lincoln Tool and Design Co. in Lincoln; FabriPlas Metal in Bennet and Saro Cider in Lincoln.

Habitat ReStore Omaha locations sold
After 25 years of operations, Habitat for Humanity of Omaha has announced its decision to sell both Omaha-area ReStore locations to Thrift World, citing the desire to focus on its core mission of affordable homeownership. In its announcement, the organization said the two stores, located at 10920 Emmet St. and 1003 S. 24th St., will continue operating under the new ownership and that current ReStore employees will have an opportunity for continued employment with the new company.
Health Department launches new program
The Douglas County Health Department has launched a new food handler training program in response to updates to the Omaha Municipal Code approved in August 2025. Under the updated ordinance, employees of food establishments are now required to complete food safety training and pass an exam to obtain a food handler certificate within 30 days of employment.
To support compliance and promote food safety, DCHD partnered with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to develop an online training portal divided into three certification levels. The two-year certification training is initially being offered in English and Spanish, with additional languages to be added as resources allow.
Community Development Assistance Act applications open
The Nebraska Department of Economic Development is now accepting applications for the Community Development Assistance Act projects. CDAA enables the DED to grant a 40% state tax credit to individuals and businesses that make eligible contributions to certified projects or programs. Any county, city, village or nonprofit community betterment organization that provides community assistance or community services in a community development area may apply for CDAA project or program certification. Upon approval of the application, the organization can notify donors to the certified project or program that they are eligible for tax credits.
DED will not authorize more than $50,000 of tax credits for any single project or program during any single fiscal year. Once an applicant enters into agreement with DED, a 12-month period begins during which donations to the certified project or program may be eligible for tax credits. Subject to legislative changes, DED can allocate a total of $350,000 in state tax credits each fiscal year. Applications may be submitted electronically through DED’s grant management system.
MCC announces new scholarship, grant
An initial $1 million pledge from the Rod Rhoden Foundation to Metropolitan Community College for a new scholarship will establish the Rod’s Auto Tech Team Scholarship, which is available to students of all ages pursuing MCC automotive technology certificate or associate degree programs, including MCC Career Academy participants. The scholarship is expected to strengthen pathways into automotive technology careers while addressing the need for more skilled technicians to work on increasingly complex, tech-driven vehicles.
MCC has also received a $770,663 Advanced Technical Education grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the federal government’s independent science agency. The three-year grant will fund the college’s “Building Pathways to Biotechnology Technician Careers” project, which will help MCC develop a new, comprehensive biotechnology training program. Planned to start in fall 2026, the program aims to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to work as an entry-level technician in the biomanufacturing industry.
Omaha Parks and Rec receives grant
The Omaha Parks and Recreation Department received a $300,000 Inflation Reduction Act grant through the Nebraska Forest Service to support hazardous tree removal and replacement efforts at several parks across the city. The grant funding will remove more than 300 hazardous trees and replace them with new plantings to improve safety, enhance the urban canopy and ensure the long-term health of Omaha’s park system. Work is taking place at Hanscom, Adams, Fontenelle, Kountze, Dahlman, Levi Carter and Benson parks.

Persistence Pays HEATH MELLO’S
VISION
FOR GREATER OMAHA TAKES SHAPE
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Outside of leadership, what business ideas and methods did you bring to the chamber from working at places such as the Legislature or working for colleges?
From my time in public service, I think bringing the leadership skills around consensus building and bringing together diverse opinions and diverse stakeholders to help solve problems is something I’ve been able to bring to the chamber.
From my time in the Legislature as chair of the appropriations committee, working with diverse legislators, diverse governors in terms of their political views and priorities, and trying to weave all of them together to build consensus around sometimes difficult issues: the budget being one, tax policy being another, economic development policy being a third.
Consensus building is a lost art. Most folks tend to take a my-way-or-thehighway approach on many things, and I learned at a very early age that you can get more accomplished through putting in the hard work of trying to bring people together around consensus.
From higher education, particularly at Metropolitan Community College and the University of Nebraska system, I learned that you’re in a very competitive environment. You’re always out trying to share and enhance your value proposition.
You came into the chamber at a time when the organization needed steadying. What did you learn in the first few months that have shaped how you approach the role today?
I learned that making tough decisions when you know what the right decision is always the best approach. There were some really tough decisions that I had to make in my first 90 days here at the chamber around internal operations, external stakeholder engagement, just recalibrating the chamber financially. Those really tough decisions had significant impact on a lot of people, and I knew what the right decisions were for the long-term nature of the organization. We’re a healthier, better organization because of it.
We just had a partial government shutdown; but, how did the fall 2025 federal government shutdown and its consequences for thousands employed by the federal government here in Omaha make you rethink economic development in greater Omaha?
If anything, (the fall 2025) government shutdown showed me that we need to be consistently thinking about the impact the federal government has in our greater Omaha footprint. Everything from the Transportation Security Administration at Eppley Airfield to Offutt Air Force Base and the thousands of military and civilian personnel who work at that base, that economic impact is truly something we sometimes lose track of.
I chatted with someone from U.S. Strategic Command who said it (was) a rough six weeks, particularly for the civilian workforce that wasn’t being paid compared to the enlisted workforce. His perspective was, “We need to look out for the civilian workforce and ensure we’re able to keep them.”
The federal government’s presence here in the metro region is more sizable than people realize. The economic impact is tremendous and we need to constantly be mindful of protecting our federal presence when possible.
Looking at 2027, when your current strategic plan concludes, what would make you feel like you’ve succeeded? And what does a transformed greater Omaha look like?
I look at our three-year economic development strategy through multiple lenses.
Perhaps the biggest new focus is talent attraction opportunities around our “Back to Omaha” campaign, which is trying to drive folks from the region to reconsider restarting their career here.
One, through a pure metric lens; every initiative we have outlined has specific metrics. After December 2027, I want to track how many of those metrics we actually met and surpassed.
But the strategy resets a baseline around three key areas: how much strategic business growth occurred, where we moved the needle in attracting talented workers and retaining our brain gain, and redefining the region nationally as a destination for both talent and business attraction.
Were we able to point to three big movements over that three-year period in each one of those priorities? These priorities won’t be going away. While we took a three-year window, we went into this realizing this is probably a five- to eight-year window because they are the driving forces of what we heard from stakeholders.
Are you seeing small indicators of success?
We’re seeing more targeted business growth opportunities from new-to-market companies and existing employers. Perhaps the biggest new focus is talent attraction opportunities around our “Back to Omaha” campaign, which is trying to drive folks from the region to reconsider restarting their career here.
We’re seeing things in housing and child care. For us to grow our economy, expand and attract new companies and create quality jobs requires a skilled workforce and the aspects of your economy you have to be successful are housing availability and childcare availability. This fall we had a housing and child care summit exploring employer-led solutions.
What is one thing you’ve learned while being chamber president that has surprised you?
What has surprised me is the immense appreciation and for some, a general love of what the chamber does. I’ve been a chamber member before, but I never fully realized that out of nearly 3,000 members, there are people who really appreciate and love the work that gets done.
People who may not be on the board, who may not be in leadership roles, there’s a lot of folks who feel such a tremendous connection to the events we put on, the programming we have. I’ve been flabbergasted by how lucky I am to be in this role.
We started a series called “Grounds for Growth,” a small business monthly roundtable I host to talk about barriers they face. Ironically, we heard AI is something folks ask us to lean into more. Folks would like us to help small business members navigate through what is no doubt a lot of turbulence and change right now due to artificial intelligence.
One of your favorite movies is “The Shawshank Redemption.” How does the grit of main character Andy Dufresne resonate with your work building consensus and driving economic development?
Most films I’ve found enjoyment through, “The Shawshank Redemption” being one, all center around persistence. You learn from your failures and you never give up. That’s part of who I am. No matter how dark it may seem, no matter how difficult the task, no matter how high the wall you have to climb over, that persistence and drive to overcome adversity is what separates you from the rest of the pack.
Here at the chamber, there are a lot more losses than wins in this space. You try to go for a lot of projects and opportunities to do bigger, better things, and you’re not always successful. More times than not, you’re on the losing end in terms of the competition. You have to stay persistent. You have to continually push the region, the city, stakeholders, partners, investors and members every day to realize there’s no giving up. There’s always going to be an opportunity to put a new project forward, a new idea forward to accomplish your economic development goals.
Same way with “Rocky,” same thing with “Jerry Maguire,”: characters who had hope, never gave up and consistently tried to focus on the future. That is a synopsis of what I try to do here at the Greater Omaha Chamber. That’s what a lot of our members and volunteers try to do as well, focusing on the future and never giving up on it.

Seeing Clearly
“It’s been a great profession, and I would encourage young people to go into it, although it’s really, really expensive anymore.
Fifteen years of searching for a buyer taught Jacque Young, O.D., that succession planning and succession reality are two very different things.
Several private optometry practice owners in the Omaha metro area are reaching retirement age, but as three second-generation owners are discovering, passing the torch is far more complicated for them than their parents.
The challenge isn’t just finding a successor. It’s navigating an industry transformed by crushing student debt, administrative burdens, insurance pressures and a fundamental shift in how young optometrists view practice ownership.
“In this day and age a lot of people don’t want to be employers, they just want to be an employee,” said Young, who succeeded in selling her Glenwood, Iowa, practice in 2023.
That sentiment echoes across professional services, from law and accounting firms to veterinary and vision clinics.
Three practices, three paths
Kerri Dietz Pillen, O.D., owner of Bellevue Vision Clinic, represents the first path: planning ahead while uncertain about the outcome. Her son, Steven Pillen, once thought about joining the family business but chose research instead.
“It’s common to graduate from optometry school now with $100,000 to $300,000 of debt,” Pillen said. “I just let Steven know that if he were to take on that kind of debt, he’d want to feel that it’s something he really wants to do.”
Two doctors expressed interest in purchasing her practice a couple of years ago, but Pillen’s realistic.
“I try to set my sights low, such that if I don’t have anyone who wants to purchase the practice, that I just close shop and walk away,” she said.
Young’s journey represents the second path: persistence through setback after setback. She worked with four different doctors over eight to 10 years, watching deal after deal fall through. At the end of 2021, a Council Bluffs, Iowa, doctor “pulled the rug out from under me again after that had already happened two or three other

- JACQUE YOUNG, O.D.
times.”
Kyle Klute, O.D., who had worked for Young in 2015, left to open his own practice in Omaha, then called in 2019 when his Omaha practice struggled. Klute finally made an offer in 2022, but couldn’t get enough bank financing for the practice and the building. Young financed the building herself at 4% interest. After 42 years of practice, she finally fully retired in May 2025.
The third path is the one no one wants to take. Laura Armitage, O.D., took over Clarity Eye Care from her mother, who had served the Northwest Omaha community for more than two decades. In December 2024, Armitage announced the practice would close.
“The landscape of private optometry has changed significantly in recent years,” Armitage wrote to patients. “Increasing administrative demands, staffing challenges and the financial pressures of today’s insurance environment have made it increasingly difficult to sustain a small, independent practice.”
The challenges ran deeper than industry trends, however.
“The practice had already been struggling for a few years before I took over the business,” Armitage said. “Insurance reimbursements only remained stagnant or decreased continuously. Our rent increased by nearly 30% about two years ago, pay rates for staff are up over 50% in the last 10 years, and the increased need for updated tech systems like electronic records, patient communication systems and equipment have raised overhead to an insurmountable level.”
The final blow came in September when her office manager gave notice. Armitage’s mother had worked with an office manager who ran most of the logistics for nearly 20 years.
“We brought on a new manager in 2023 and she was fantastic. I had fully expected her to be my right hand for another 20 years,” Armitage said. “The increased administrative load and the difficulty of staff management while I was in the exam room all day long were more than I could handle, and the cost of hiring a new manager was more than I could afford. The job began to eat my entire life and it was totally unsustainable.”

I just let Steven know that if he were to take on that kind of debt, he’d want to feel that it’s something he really wants to do.

- KERRI DIETZ PILLEN, O.D.
She accepted a position at Eye Specialists, a well-established practice with locations in Papillion and Bellevue where she started this past week.
“I’m looking forward to going home at the end of the day and having time for a social life and better work-life balance,” she said.
The economics don’t add up
Pillen and Young each graduated from optometry school in 1983. Pillen graduated with $2,000 of debt, which she paid off in two years. The contrast with today’s huge debt loads illustrates how fundamentally the economics have changed.
One of the most significant concerns is maintaining standards of care. Pillen and Young emphasized their refusal to sell to private equity.
“I do not want to sell to private equity,” Pillen said. “I would rather take a hit money-wise than sell to a practice that would put profits first and patients last and not deliver the standard of care that I feel I have provided to my patients over the years.”
Young’s practice focused heavily on early detection and preventive care. Private equity firms, she said, “just take the practice and kind of dumb it down and they don’t do a lot of specialty stuff like what we did.”
Legacy beyond business
For these optometrists, legacy extends beyond the business to relationships built over decades. Pillen emphasized the multigenerational nature of her patient base. She’s also adjusting her retirement timeline to accommodate a longstanding employee who wants to work two years longer than Pillen initially planned.
Pillen emphasized starting succession planning early.
“The sooner ahead you can start preparing and planning, the better off you will be,” she said.
Armitage, despite her practice closing, still believes in the model.
“Owning this small health care business has been my entire goal and plan since I was 19 years old, and I felt like I had prepared for it in every way that I could,” she said. “I still believe in private practice being the best mode of health care for both doctors and their patients.”
Her advice for others considering similar paths is specific: look into an insurance-free business model.
“The unfortunate truth is that in today’s health care environment, the only party truly benefiting from the doctor-patient-insurance relationship is the insurance company,” she said. “I would also insist on having a strong practice administrator to help with the administrative load. Many people measure a doctor’s success by how full their schedule is but when the clinic schedule is full, the administrative work has to happen after hours if there isn’t someone else to help share the load. That is a very common cause of health care worker burnout.”
The future of small optometry practices in the region remains uncertain. Succession planning alone cannot solve structural challenges requiring broader industry solutions around education costs, insurance reform and support for independent practitioners. Young reflected on her 42 years with gratitude despite the challenges.
“It’s been a great profession, and I would encourage young people to go into it, although it’s really, really expensive anymore,” she said.
As Pillen approaches retirement, she remains hopeful but realistic.
“My legacy will be in people’s memories of the care that they got here,” she said.

My executive benefits are complex and I don’t fully understand them. I want to make informed decisions and have enough set aside to pay college tuition for my boys.
I WORK HARD FOR WHAT I
EARN. HOW CAN I MAKE THE MOST OF MY COMPENSATION?

ELI RIGATUSO ACTIVIST, SPEAKER AND AUTHOR
MBJ’s Fab 50 is a profile series highlighting remarkable individuals shaping our business and nonprofit communities.

Native Language
ELI RIGATUSO SPEAKS EQUALITY FOR ALL
Growing up in Omaha, Eli Rigatuso didn’t see a lot of people who looked like him, didn’t attend school with many who shared his Native American heritage, and didn’t run into anyone who fully understood his essence until college. These elements, among others, not only led him to a life of advocacy but invested in Rigatuso a deep and unique empathy for the differences of others.
“I’ve always known that I was Native American and I’ve always been othered out in life because I was always darker-skinned than everyone, all of my classmates,” he said. “As a kid, my favorite thing in grade school was art but I was always criticized for what I did because I colored outside the lines, so to speak. I kind of suppressed a lot of that artistic expression as a result because I felt like people couldn’t connect with what I was creating.
“I’ve just gotten to the point anymore where I don’t care, and it took me a while to get here, where I’m more concerned about making connections with my inner essence and my creator and the people around me. I have a strong-held belief that we are all interconnected.”
Even within the context of being Native American, Rigatuso’s backstory is complex, as he can trace his lineage back through several Native tribes and nations.
“On my maternal grandmother’s side we’re Menominee,” he said. “My mother’s father was actually born up in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, and he was a mix of Oglala, Dakota and Omaha. So, we have a little bit of variety in regard to Native American lineage.
“We are direct descendants of War Eagle, and there’s actually an image of War Eagle depicted at the Smithsonian Institute. A rather popular image, in fact, and it’s kind of wild because it hung in our house and I knew other family members that had the same image hanging in their homes. So it was a part of the background of my life in a way.”
Assigned female at birth, Rigatuso had an awakening in the 1990s while attending classes at the University of Nebraska Omaha when an instructor pulled him aside.
“He was Native American and I was taking his Native American studies class,” he said. “The first day after class he says, ‘Hey, I want you to stay after class. I want to talk to you.’ I’m thinking, oh my God, I’m already in trouble.
“He said to me, ‘You’re Two-Spirit, aren’t you?’ And I was like, ‘What is that?’ He asked, “Are you part of the LGBTQ+ community?’ I said yes, and he said, ‘Are you Native American?’ I said yes and he goes, “Well, then you’re Two-

Spirit.’ I started to learn a lot about what that meant.”
The term is a contemporary one, used by some indigenous people to describe a person who embodies both masculine and feminine spirits, reflecting gender identities and roles. Rigatuso’s exploration of the term was one step in a longer journey of self-understanding and acceptance.
“I was introduced to a trans man, Ryan Sells, and I did some video interviews with him and had some extensive conversations with him. This was before I came out as trans, and I was still very confronted,” he said. “I never did anything with his interviews, I just set it all aside because I think I was too confronted over it.
“In 2016 or 2015 I ended up watching the 20/20 interview with Kaitlyn Jenner, before she was calling herself Kaitlyn, and it just really hit me. I was like, ‘oh my gosh, I’m trans. That is totally me.’”
Rigatuso, who works at Bellevue University, shares elements of his personal journey as well as tells the stories of others through various artistic projects and labors of love. He spends most of his free time on “Speaking of Happy,” a website he created to share the stories of people living in the Midwest who identify as LGBTQIA2S+. He is also the host of the “Speaking of Happy LIVE!” podcast.
“I came up with ‘Speaking of Happy’ out of a desire to put the word ‘happy’ back into the word ‘gay,’ and a need to tell happy stories instead of just the tragic ones,” he said. “I wanted to localize national stories around the LGBTQIA2S+ community and say, ‘Hey, here are people locally who are of these identities. We are your neighbors and your friends, you know, we’re your sons and daughters and aunts and uncles. Most of all, we’re all good people.’”
He is also widely recognized in the community as an outspoken equal rights activist who was instrumental in raising funds for the campaign against Nebraska Initiative 416, the “Ban Same-Sex Marriage Act,” in 2000. He also helped found and serve on the board of Heartland Pride, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit which hosts the Pride festival in Omaha.
In 2019 Rigatuso was honored with the Heartland Youth Pride Marsha P. Johnson Changemaker Award for his contributions and activism over many years, as well as his visibility as a transgender person. That same year he was honored with the Change Maker Award through the Omaha Chamber of Commerce YP group and also delivered a speech at the 2019 YP Summit.
“I’ve worked at a lot of different nonprofits that have advocated for LGBTQ+ people here in Nebraska,” he said. “To be acknowledged for that work and for what I was doing with ‘Speaking of Happy’ and the advocacy that I was doing specifically for the trans community really meant a lot to me. I felt they were acknowledging that trans folks needed to be heard and that our story had value. It just really meant a lot to me.”

UNMC Expands Nursing Partnership with UNO AGREEMENT
The University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Nursing and the University of Nebraska Omaha’s College of Arts & Sciences will collaborate on an early admission pathway for pre-nursing students at UNO.
In a memorandum of understanding signed Jan. 15, the UNMC College of Nursing will provide information and advisement regarding admission to the college’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program to pre-nursing students at UNO.
Students will receive guaranteed early admission into the BSN program, as long as they meet all nursing pre-requisite requirements and complete the UNMC College of Nursing’s admission process.
“Nebraska continues to experience a significant demand for registered nurses, particularly in rural communities where preventative care and health promotion are essential to the well-being of our residents,” said Lepaine SharpMcHenry, DNP, dean of the UNMC College of Nursing. “With five divisions of the UNMC College of Nursing stretching from Omaha to Scottsbluff, we are excited to create early, accessible pathways that allow students to begin their nursing education sooner. This new collaboration with UNO brings that vision to life. Together, we are opening doors for students, expanding educational opportunities, and strengthening Nebraska’s nursing workforce pipeline to support healthier communities across the state.”
The MOU builds on the ongoing collaboration between UNO and UNMC, while also reinforcing the shared commitment to the state’s nursing workforce, said Melanie Bloom, Ph.D., dean of the UNO College of Arts and Sciences.
“By formalizing advising, admission and progression pathways, we are strengthening a pipeline that helps students move efficiently from undergraduate study into nursing careers where they are urgently needed,” Bloom said.
UNO Chancellor Joanne Li, Ph.D., echoed the importance of collaboration between the two universities.
“UNO is proud to deepen the strong, longstanding ties between our university and UNMC,” Li said. “Our prenursing students aren’t just any students — they are

ASK AN attorney
JON E. BLUMENTHAL, ATTORNEY
How Do I Hire An Attorney?
Our Ask-An-Attorney series has focused on many different aspects of the law. Some people have never hired an attorney before and are afraid of the process. Don’t be. We want to help our clients and make it as simple as possible. The law can be difficult, but good communication between a client and lawyer is critical.
Q: Do I really need an attorney?
If you are a business owner — whether big or small — yes. Your lawyer can help you properly structure your business, make sure you are properly insulated from liability, and help with any number of issues or problems; and better yet, can stop issues from becoming problems. It’s a good idea to establish a relationship with an attorney you trust before you need one.
Q: But won’t I have to pay a retainer?
Not necessarily. A good lawyer will discuss their fee structure with you before accepting your engagement. You should make sure you understand how and when you will be billed. The best lawyers want you to understand your bills and for you to be happy with the value received for their services.
Q: What’s the best way to touch base?
A lawyer’s or law firm’s website is a great way to learn more about a lawyer or lawyers. A good website should provide phone or email information. Feel free to call or email; many lawyers are used to communicating regularly and quickly by email. Zoom is a great way to “meet” your lawyer if you don’t have time to visit the office.

Q: OK, I want to hire a lawyer. What’s next?
A lawyer should check for potential conflicts of interest before accepting your engagement as a client. A lawyer should make sure he or she (and anybody in their firm, if they practice in a law firm) does not represent a client whose interests are or may become adverse to you or your business. Once a lawyer has cleared any potential conflicts of interest, they should set forth the terms of your engagement in a clear engagement letter. When you receive the engagement letter, make sure you understand it. Don’t be afraid to ask questions; most lawyers like to help.
Q: I’ve heard about the attorney-client privilege. How does that work?
With certain exceptions, most things you discuss with your attorney are confidential. Ask your lawyer to explain what communications do and do not remain confidential, and how those exceptions work. You should start with an understanding that you can speak to your attorney with trust.
Q: My lawyer doesn’t communicate with me enough, or promptly enough. What now?
A good lawyer should always communicate as promptly as possible. Sometimes we are busy serving other clients or dealing with regular life emergencies, but a good rule of thumb is that a lawyer should strive to get back to you within 24 hours. If you are not happy with your lawyer’s responsiveness or communication, do not be shy about letting them know! If communication remains a problem, find another lawyer.

Investing in 2026: Why Discipline and Diversification Matter More Than Ever
Markets have rewarded patience in recent years, but the path ahead looks more complex. Elevated valuations, concentrated market leadership and shifting economic conditions are testing traditional assumptions about risk and return.
FNBO Wealth’s 2026 Outlook focuses on three principles designed to help investors navigate this environment: stay invested, stay diversified and stay disciplined. Together, they form a long-term strategy that emphasizes positioning over prediction — thinking several moves ahead rather than reacting to short-term noise.
Staying invested remains essential for the possibility of long-term wealth creation, particularly during periods of volatility when emotional decisions can derail outcomes. At the same time, diversification matters more as market returns are driven by a narrow group of large companies and valuations sit well above long-term averages. Protecting key assets through broader exposure can help manage risk while maintaining opportunity.
The Outlook highlights opportunities across international equities, small- and mid-cap stocks, fixed income and select alternative strategies that may help strengthen portfolio resilience. Discipline brings these elements together. Thoughtful asset allocation and consistent rebalancing help investors avoid reactive decisions and stay aligned with long-term objectives.
In uncertain markets, success rarely comes from guessing the next headline, but from building a strong position and sticking to a deliberate plan.

Doubting the “AI Bubble”
It’s easy to get caught up in the “AI bubble” narrative when looking at the parabolic moves of a few infrastructure giants but a wider lens tells a more nuanced story.
A lot of software stocks have underperformed meaningfully recently, trading far below their alltime highs even as AI dominates the headlines. That divergence is one of the strongest arguments against a bubble.
Bubbles usually look like a rising tide lifting everything, especially adjacent businesses blabbing about AI on every earnings call. What we’re seeing instead is messy, selective and realistic: the market is actively repricing expectations and separating the winning businesses from the losing.
That sorting process accelerated after Anthropic’s Claude began showing off more “agentic” behavior, notaby the “computer use” capability, where Claude can navigate a screen, move a cursor, click buttons and type like a human operating software. The demo brought up a very specific fear: if AI can use software on our behalf do we still need as many traditional apps and point solutions or does more work collapse into the assistant itself?

The market’s reaction makes sense; when the narrative shifts from “AI helps software” to “AI may replace slices of software,” investors don’t wait around, they reprice the risk immediately. But that’s our point: markets are behaving rationally.
This isn’t meant to be a judgement on the “software is dead” thesis. Rather, it is meant to highlight the rationality of the market with respect to AI. During historical moments of exuberance merely mentioning buzzwords can ignite a rally — like when Disney and Nike were rapidly embracing the metaverse and Facebook went as far as changing its name to Meta. This to us seems rational and somewhat boring, exactly
the type of market to stay invested in and be patient.

MIDLANDS LEADERS q&a
KIMBERLY CARROLL STEWARD, PH.D., EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NEBRASKA RECYCLING COUNCIL
Midlands Leaders is a weekly section showcasing individuals who are making an impact in the community through their professional and volunteer endeavors. To nominate someone for this section, email news@mbj. com with the individual’s name, position, company and email.

KIMBERLY
Bio:
A doctoral graduate of the University of NebraskaLincoln, Pennsylvania native Kimberly Carroll Steward has been executive director of the Nebraska Recycling Council for the past 18 months. Formed under its current name in 2017, the Nebraska Recycling Council was created via a merger of the Nebraska State Recycling Association, founded in 1980, and WasteCap Nebraska, founded in 1992. Late last year, the organization was one of several to receive the Sustainability Seal presented by Keep Nebraska Beautiful.
What led you to your chosen field?
I was drawn to this field through a mix of curiosity and responsibility. Early on, I became interested in how environmental issues intersect with everyday decisions: what we consume, what we throw away and how systems either support or undermine sustainability.
Through my work in environmental education and later in recycling and waste reduction, I saw firsthand how policy, infrastructure and public understanding all shape environmental outcomes.
What made you go after the Sustainability Seal designation?
We work closely with Keep Nebraska Beautiful and partner on a number of initiatives. As an organization focused on recycling, waste reduction and environmental education, the seal stood out as a practical framework that moves sustainability from intention to action. What motivated us to pursue the designation was its emphasis on measurable practices and continuous improvement.
What specific practices or initiatives earned NRC the Sustainability Seal?
Nebraska Recycling Council earned the Sustainability Seal through a combination of operational practices, education efforts and continuous improvement initiatives that align with our mission. Key practices include implementing comprehensive waste reduction and recycling procedures within our office and at events; prioritizing responsible procurement and reuse; and tracking materials to reduce contamination and improve diversion outcomes. We also integrate sustainability into our programming by providing education and technical assistance to communities, schools and businesses, helping expand recycling access and improving participation statewide. In addition, NRC emphasizes staff engagement, policy alignment and partnerships that support long-term environmental and economic benefits, demonstrating that sustainability is embedded not only in what we teach but in how we operate.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
What I enjoy most is connecting people, policy and practical action. I like working at the intersection of education, systems and real-world impact; helping communities, organizations and decision makers understand how their choices affect waste, resources and the environment. It’s especially rewarding to see complex or messy issues turn into clearer pathways forward, whether that’s through better programs, stronger partnerships or smarter policy.
What does sustainability mean to you, personally and professionally?
Personally, sustainability means being mindful of how everyday choices affect the people and places around us, recognizing that small, consistent actions add up to meaningful change.

Professionally, it means building systems that are practical, equitable and resilient over the long term. In my work, sustainability is not just about reducing waste or conserving resources but about creating solutions that communities can realistically maintain, that support economic vitality, and that protect environmental health.
What advice would you give other businesses seeking to improve their environmental profile?
My advice to other businesses is to start where you are, focusing on a few meaningful, achievable changes such as improving waste reduction practices, tracking progress and engaging staff, then building from there. If you need assistance, reach out to us at Nebraska Recycling Council; helping businesses identify opportunities and improve sustainability practices is what we do.

Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information
2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment options are cash or check.
3. Deadline is noon on Tuesday for a notice to start publishing that Friday.
4. All costs include fees
