CHÂTEAU DAUZAC ESTATE BOOK

CHÂTEAU DAUZAC
Château Dauzac, a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Médoc classification, is a Margaux estate defined by boldness. Its history reaches back to the 12th century, yet throughout the centuries successive owners have looked forward: Dauzac pioneered the Bordeaux mixture in 1884 to fight mildew, introduced early cellar thermoregulation around World War II, and created transparent double-stave vats for precise vinifications. That inventive spirit now guides the estate’s move toward naturalness and its commitment to agroforestry and biodynamic principles.
The estate sits within a 120-hectare ecosystem that includes a 49-hectare vineyard (45 ha in Margaux, 4 ha in Haut-Médoc) and a surrounding network of woods, meadows, sheep, beehives, a vegetable garden, and an arboretum of rare species. That biodiversity is managed in harmony with the rhythms of the Garonne River, which has helped shape Margaux for millions of years. Dauzac’s ambition clear: to rise among the finest Médoc Grands Crus Classés by elevating the wines’ quality by maximizing the health and resilience of the whole estate.
Since 1924 the estate has worn an emperor-yellow label—a deliberate emblem of light, clarity and sensory exploration. That color signals the same forwardlooking confidence that drives Dauzac’s technical experiments and ecological practices: a vivid marker of vision grounded in the enchantment of the Margaux.

CHÂTEAU DAUZAC GRAND CRU CLASSÉ MARGAUX
FIFTH GROWTH
Château Dauzac’s Grand Cru Classé is a Margaux of poise and perfume: a luminous, florally scented wine dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. Always deep in color, elegance sits alongside its quietly confident structure, offering immediate charm yet enough tannic backbone for age. This wine is the estate’s defining expression of curiosity and refinement that seeks to reveal, rather than dominate, the mysteries of its gravelly soils.

CHÂTEAU DAUZAC “AURORE” MARGAUX AOC
Château Dauzac’s “Aurore” Margaux AOC underscores the estate’s commitment to terroir rather than convention. Rather than dilute or echo its Grand Cru Classé, Dauzac deliberately created Aurore as a distinct Margaux expression drawn from its own privileged territory—made without borrowing fruit from the classified wine. Sourced from a single vineyard on the far eastern edge of the estate, the plot was noted as the “rising sun vines” as early as 1670—apt, since Aurore means “dawn” in French. Aurore reflects Dauzac’s ethos of curiosity and respect for nature: crafted with precise modern techniques but guided by biodiverse farming, it seeks to illuminate the living spirit of the estate’s gravelly Margaux soils.

A view of the Château by night. The estate was first recorded in 1545 as a Bourdieu, a small country house with a vineyard, and has evolved with elegance into the Château we see today.

At Château Dauzac, bees are essential partners in the estate’s holistic approach to viticulture, pollinating cover crops and meadows that enrich the soil and boost biodiversity across their 120-hectare ecosystem.
D DE DAUZAC PRESENTS THE

YELLOW IS MY WORLD
THE EMPEROR YELLOW LABEL AT CHÂTEAU DAUZAC STANDS AS A VIBRANT EMBLEM OF THE ESTATE’S IDENTITY AND HISTORY— INSTANTLY RECOGNIZABLE AND DEEPLY TIED TO ITS HERITAGE.
Its origins trace back to the 19th century, when the Johnston family, then owners of Dauzac, adopted the distinctive shade. Historical accounts note their inspiration from the imperial yellow reserved for Chinese emperors, a color synonymous with prestige and exclusivity. The choice was a bold statement that set Dauzac apart from its Bordeaux peers and signaled a forward-looking mindset rooted in tradition.
Over time, the yellow label came to symbolize far more than visual distinction; it serves as a visual “North Star,” honoring the estate’s storied past while signaling an appetite for innovation. This duality—heritage and progress—aligns with the current stewardship of the Rolleau family and the strategic direction led by CEO Laurent Fortin, who together are modernizing the estate while deepening its connection to place.
EMPEROR YELLOW RADIATES NATURE’S LUMINOUS WONDER AND WHIMSY, A BEACON OF ENCHANTMENT ROOTED
IN TERROIR.
Dauzac’s ethos now interweaves the art of living with biodiversity, treating humans as living members of complex ecosystems and cultivating pleasures that belong within them—gastronomy, wine, and the art of hospitality. There is an element of enchantment to this work: Margaux’s magic, born of its ancient, millions-of-years-old river plateau, infuses the vines, the cellar, and the table with a sense of wonder. Guided by French savoir-faire, the estate translates this wonder into practice—skilled stewardship, refined hospitality, and an aesthetic that honors terroir while inviting delight.
