WELCOME

June is one of our favourite months at Progressive Housewares as it’s time for Exclusively, which this year runs from 9 – 10 June at the Business Design Centre, London.

The show once again sold out in record time, a testament to its value to the industry. Organiser, BHETA, has a range of new and existing features planned for the event to ensure it once again exceeds the expectations of both exhibitors and visitors.

A key focus for the 2026 show is international visitors and BHETA is launching the inaugural London Store Tour to help qualifying international visitors make the most of their time in London, as well as an informal networking evening on Monday 8 June before the show opens, bringing together international visitors and exhibitors.

June also marks the halfway point of the year, so we caught up with some key suppliers from a range of categories to find out how the year has been so far and what their hopes and expectations are for the remainder of 2026.

It’s also time to start getting entries in for this year’s Excellence in Housewares Awards (while we work out how to top that conga), so in this issue, some of the retailer judges have shared their hopes for entries and observations from the year, ahead of the unenviable task of choosing the best products for 2026.

Mop with clean water. Every time. Using a conventional mop means you’re often simply pushing dirty water around your home. Now Joseph Joseph has reimagined the task with UltraClean, the revolutionary new floorcleaning system. Its patented SprayClean technology cleans the mop pad as you rinse, squeezing and scraping dirt fresh water onto the pad. Its two-tank system keeps clean and dirty water separate, with the dirty water channelled to a translucent outer bucket, which lets you see the results of your work for an undeniably satisfying clean. An allaccess, articulated mop head and telescopic handle mean you can reach even the most awkward corners of your floor. By rethinking convention, Joseph Joseph has once again demonstrated its mission to be a disruptive innovator in homeware design. For more information contact info@josephjoseph.com

The awards will be announced at a ceremony on Wednesday 30 September 2026 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London. Make sure you add it to your diaries and get your tickets booked early to avoid disappointment.

The popular Trend Showcase with partner, Scarlet Opus, will return, along with a programme of presentations and guided tours running throughout the space. A dedicated trend presentation for HoReCa buyers is also being introduced, as well as a new downloadable buying guide.

Meanwhile the popular Press and Influencer Event will return to the show, as well as the well-earned drinks reception after the first day of the show in the dining room from 5.30pm.

With all of this on top of exciting new product launches and theatre on stands throughout the two days, the event is set to be a vibrant and exciting show once again.

You’ll also find a deeper dive into this year’s gia Global Honorees in this issue, as well as some insights from gia judge, Denise Foley and independent retailers about visual merchandising and window displays.

It’s just a few weeks until we head to London for Exclusively, so please do get in touch if you’d like to book a meeting with the PH team. We can’t wait to see you there.

Portmeirion names new group ceo

Portmeirion Group has announced the appointment of Michael Scheepers as group chief executive officer.

After nine years with the group, Mike Raybould has decided to step down from his ceo role and as a director of the company.

Michael Scheepers joined Portmeirion as group brand and commercial director in December 2025 as part of the company’s succession plans. He previously worked at Le Creuset, where he was employed for over nine years in senior leadership roles, including six years as regional ceo across a global portfolio of mature and emerging markets.

At Portmeirion Michael has led the global ecommerce, own retail and brand marketing teams with responsibility for the UK sales division, working closely with the board as part of the senior leadership team.

Peter Tracey, non-executive chairman of Portmeirion, commented: “I would like to thank Mike Raybould for the significant contribution he has made to Portmeirion

over the last nine years.

“In Michael Scheepers we have an experienced leader with deep expertise in premium home and lifestyle brand transformation and a strong commercial track record. Under his leadership we will continue to focus on accelerating progress against our strategic transformation goals of returning to growth and improved performance, fortress balance sheet and ultimately elevating Portmeirion’s heritage brands to a wider global consumer.”

Michael commented: “Portmeirion Group has a stable of brands steeped in the rich heritage of British craftmanship and design and I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the business as we launch and execute on our new strategic plans.

“I look forward to working closely with the board and our talented team to leverage the exciting global opportunities ahead and deliver long-term value for our stakeholders.”

Mike Raybould, ceo, commented: “It has

Cole & Mason partners with eco chef

Cole & Mason has announced eco chef, Guild of Food Writer Finalist for 2026 cookery writer of the year and sustainability advocate, Tom Hunt as its brand ambassador.

Launching the partnership will be The Art of Seasoning campaign, a new video series celebrating flavour, confidence and creativity in the kitchen.

Rooted in seasonality and making delicious food more accessible, Tom’s cooking philosophy reflects a shared belief at the heart of the partnership – that flavour is central to memorable cooking.

Tom said: “What I’ve always loved about cooking is that even the most modest ingredients can become something memorable when treated with care. Seasoning is such a fundamental part of that. It gives you control, confidence and the ability to bring balance and depth to a dish without overcomplicating it.”

The partnership also reflects Cole & Mason’s belief that great kitchen tools should combine performance, longevity and timeless design. With its designregistered Precision+ carbon steel mechanism, engineered to slice first before crushing the peppercorn, releasing more aroma and flavour, the brand continues to create products that elevate both cooking and dining, while remaining beautifully considered objects in the home.

been a privilege to lead this group as ceo with its amazing portfolio of heritage ceramic brands. We have been able to transform and modernise our business and operations over the last five years despite the difficult economic backdrop and I’m delighted that I am able to hand over to Michael, who joined us last year.”

Next outlines plans to overcome costs caused by Iran war

Next has issued a trading statement outlining its intentions to increase prices in order to offset cost increases from the US-Israel war with Iran.

Heidi Thomas, head of marketing, DK Household Brands (including Cole & Mason), said: “Tom brings real authority to this partnership because his approach speaks to several of the shifts we’re seeing across the industry. Consumers are increasingly interested in cooking with more confidence, making better use of ingredients and creating greater depth of flavour at home. Tom’s philosophy captures all of that in a way that feels relevant, modern and genuinely engaging.”

Additional costs for Next this year are estimated to be £47m, due to higher fuel prices and disruption to global supply chains caused by the Middle East conflict. The retailer has, therefore, outlined plans to increase prices in some international countries from May, while also implementing cost savings.

The forecasts are based on the assumption that fuel costs remain at the current level and supply chains neither worsen or improve. Costs had initially been anticipated to increase by £15m due to the war, but that figure only covered the first three months of the conflict.

Full price sales for the retailer in Q1 were up 6.2% yearon-year, against a forecast of 4%, due to a particularly strong first five weeks of the year. However weeks six to eight saw a decline in international sales of 8.9% as the war began.

Next is maintaining its guidance for sales for the remainder of the year with total full price sales anticipated to increase 5%.

Bristol Blue Glass announces closure

Glassware company, Bristol Blue Glass will close at the end of the month.

In a statement, the company said: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the permanent closure of Bristol Blue Glass.

“Despite our passion and efforts, the ongoing challenges have simply become insurmountable for a small business like ours.

“After receiving notice last year, on our Bath Road premises, with a scheduled move-out date set for February 2026, a petition was drawn up from our wonderful local councillor Andrew Varney.

“The support from the community, with over 7,000 signatures, was truly humbling. And, thanks to community backing and negotiations with Bristol City Council, we secured a new premises and an extension of our existing lease until the end of May 2026.

“Unfortunately, due to the ill health of our managing directors and the rising costs of fuel, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, a large increase in premises rental and required refurbishment and other essential expenses, the financial strain has become overwhelming.

“We did our best, but the truth is, the circumstances and financial requirements are beyond our control.”

Fackelmann takes on Tupperware distribution

Fackelmann Brands is expanding its international brand portfolio and has secured exclusive distribution rights for the Tupperware brand in nearly 20 European countries.

Fackelmann will distribute the Tupperware brand in countries including Austria, Switzerland, Ireland and the UK. With this move, the company is strengthening its position in the household goods segment, while also partnering with one of the world’s best-known brands for food storage.

In recent years, Tupperware has undergone a profound transformation: The shift from traditional direct sales to initial forays into brick-and-mortar retail proved to be turbulent. This fundamental strategic shift has led the American company to focus more heavily on granting distribution licences.

Fackelmann Brands is capitalising on this strategic realignment and expanding its portfolio, which already includes around 20 of its own brands and licensed products, to include the renowned Tupperware brand.

The planned initial product range will comprise approximately 50 items, including classic food storage containers, stackable storage containers, freezer containers and innovative water bottles.

The launch is scheduled for late summer in Austria – initially at the country’s largest grocery retailer. The market launch will be accompanied by brand-defining and eyecatching POS solutions for shelf and secondary placements, which will underscore the brand’s recognition and appeal at the point of sale.

By integrating Tupperware into its existing portfolio, Fackelmann is sending a clear signal of its commitment to growth, innovation and the consistent advancement of international brand strategies in the home goods sector.

Whitefurze is a manufacturer of consumer durables with a product range extending across food storage and preparation, housewares, storage and gardening sectors.

It operates across three sites including 156,000 sq. ft of warehousing and a 42,000 sq. ft manufacturing facility in Nuneaton, utilising 34 state-of-theart injection moulding machines and robotic handling equipment.

The business has a proud heritage of producing 100% UK manufactured goods for a client base of wholesalers, national retailers and independents.

The acquisition by RDCP marks the next stage of growth for Whitefurze as it seeks to scale up further. RDCP is a London-based family office investment firm. Its deal team of Sameer Rizvi, Iryna Dubylovska, Martin O’Donoghue and Paul Clunn executed the transaction and will work alongside Whitefurze’s managing director, Tracey Stone and finance director, Steve Hockin.

AURELIUS Finance Company provided the debt facility to support the initial acquisition consideration, as well as the business’ post-transaction working capital requirement.

Following this latest acquisition, RDCP operates nine platform companies that collectively employ over 2,000 people, with an enterprise value of approximately $650 million.

Sameer Rizvi, founder and ceo of RDCP, said: “Whitefurze is a business we have admired for quite some time. It combines a long-standing heritage of UK manufacturing with a reputation for quality, reliability and strong customer relationships. Exactly the characteristics we look for in our partners. Businesses like Whitefurze are increasingly rare.”

MPs issue PFAS report

MPs are warning that the government should urgently restrict non-essential uses of chemicals labelled as ‘forever chemicals’.

The warning came in a new report by the cross-party Environmental Audit Committee, on ‘Addressing the risks from Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)’.

The committee also called for the government to take a stronger approach to regulating PFAS, to ensure that those who pollute waterways and soil pay for it to be cleaned up, establish a national fund for remediation and invest in technologies to destroy these chemicals safely.

Chair of the Environmental Audit Committee, Toby Perkins MP, said: “From frying pans to fire extinguishers, PFAS are now central to every day and some lifesaving products, and nearly all of us will have some level of PFAS in our bodies. But evidence we heard throughout our inquiry suggests that our dependence on PFAS has come with a cost to the environment, and perhaps to human health too.

“Our report calls for the government to phase out PFAS uses that are clearly non-essential, such as in kitchen equipment and school uniforms and to take a precautionary approach to approving new PFAS.

“The government has all the information it needs to get PFAS out of the environment and deter future pollution. Waiting will only make the problem worse. Now is the time to act.”

The committee warned that the risk of new PFAS substances emerging faster than they can be assessed, leaves regulators struggling to keep pace with industry and can lead to banned substances being replaced by harmful alternatives.

MPs said the government should adopt an essential-use approach to regulating PFAS and prioritise rapidly restricting the use of PFAS in nonessential applications. It should bring forward restrictions on PFAS in nonessential consumer products such as food packaging, cookware and school uniforms, with a phased restriction from 2027.

They also warned that voluntary action on PFAS or self-regulation by industry are not sufficient to reduce PFAS emissions. They recommended the government take preventative and precautionary action to reduce PFAS exposure.

Gareth Till has been appointed as a director of Dexam.

“Together with our talented team, I am committed to driving our vision forward, continuing to innovate, and enhancing the value we provide to our customers. I look forward to building on our successes.”

Bryony Dyer, managing director, added: “Since joining Dexam, Gareth has made a strong and immediate contribution and his appointment to the board is a natural progression. He brings valuable industry experience, sound commercial judgement and a practical, hands-on approach that aligns closely with how we operate.

“As we look ahead, Gareth will play a key role in driving our next phase of growth – evolving our product ranges, strengthening our customer partnerships and identifying new opportunities across the market. We have a solid platform and a clear sense of direction, and the board is confident that Gareth will help us build on that momentum and continue delivering consistent, long-term success.”

BHETA appoints Claire Smith

BHETA has appointed Claire Smith as its new sector manager for housewares and small domestic electricals, as well as director of sales for Exclusively.

Claire is due to join BHETA on 2 July and will be taking over from Seema Grantham, who will remain with BHETA throughout July to support a smooth handover. Claire arrives with over 20 years’ experience in retail buying across housewares and small electricals, having held senior roles with retailers including Next, Dobbies, Blue Diamond, Beales, TJX, and Voisins.

Steve Richardson, general manager of BHETA, said: “I’m really looking forward to Claire joining BHETA in the summer. She brings a great mix of retail insight, commercial experience and strong relationships across the sector.

“Her perspective as a former buyer, combined with her understanding of the market, puts her in a strong position to support our members and build on the progress we’ve made in housewares and small electricals. I’m looking forward to working with her as we continue to develop both the sector and Exclusively.”

Claire is well known across the industry and brings a strong understanding of both the retail and supplier landscape, along with an established network of contacts. Having attended the Exclusively Show as a buyer over many years, Claire also has a clear view of what matters most to exhibitors and retailers, which will be valuable as BHETA continues to develop the show.

Steve added: “Seema has made a significant contribution to BHETA over the past seven years and she remains with us through July. She is a well-known and trusted figure in the industry and has played an important role in strengthening both member engagement and the development of Exclusively. We are very grateful for everything she continues to do, and I’d like to thank her personally for her commitment and professionalism.”

Claire said: “I’m really pleased to be joining BHETA and taking on this role. Having worked with many suppliers over the years and attended Exclusively as a buyer, I’ve seen the value the association and the show bring to the sector. I’m looking forward to getting started, meeting members and working together to build on that –particularly around strengthening retailer engagement and continuing to develop Exclusively.”

Exclusively Show 2026 expands international reach

Exclusively is cementing its position as an international event with a growing roster of overseas retail buyers, distributors and trade media visiting the show. International engagement at Exclusively Show has grown considerably in recent years, with key retail buyers and distributors travelling from across Europe and beyond to source new products, meet existing suppliers and explore emerging trends in home and lifestyle categories. In 2026, the show will welcome visitors from Germany, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Norway, Switzerland, Poland and Dubai, reinforcing its strong appeal far beyond the UK.

Alongside retail buyers, senior editors from key international trade media attend the show each year, extending the reach of exhibitors' news and product launches.

For 2026, Exclusively Show is launching a new initiative to help qualifying international visitors make the most of their time in London. For the first time, VIP international guests will be offered a guided London store tour,

visiting bricks-and-mortar retail locations across the city.

The tour will showcase products from UK and international suppliers, many of whom will be exhibiting at the show, displayed in real retail environments. These store visits provide buyers and distributors with a valuable opportunity to benchmark competitor ranges, evaluate merchandising solutions firsthand, and gain a clearer understanding of the UK market ahead of the show.

An informal networking evening will be held on Monday 8 June, the night before the show opens, bringing together VIP international visitors and show exhibitors for early introductions and the opportunity to begin conversations that will continue throughout the two-day event. The relaxed format is designed to break the ice and help both buyers and brands make the most of their time at the show. The number of international retail buyers attending the evening event is 44% higher than in 2025.

Steve Richardson, general manager of BHETA, said, “We are very encouraged by the growing number of international visitors who are attending the Exclusively Housewares show each year. The London Store Tour is proving particularly popular. We are excited to bring international retailers together with the 250 brands on show at the exhibition.”

Taking place on 9–10 June 2026 at the Business Design Centre in London, Exclusively Show is organised by BHETA and provides a focused, curated environment where suppliers can connect with quality buyers in a single, highly productive setting.

BHETA appoints marketing assistant

BHETA has expanded its in-house marketing team with the appointment of Gifty Reji as marketing assistant. In her role, Gifty will support the planning and delivery of marketing activity across BHETA’s channels and initiatives, working closely with marketing executive Natalia Ciecierska and contributing to campaigns including the Exclusively Show event promotion.

Gifty studied Business Management with Marketing at Edge Hill University, before progressing into social media roles, where she worked with a diverse range of clients including entrepreneurs and business coaches across multiple industries.

She has gained valuable experience in both in-house marketing teams and agency environments, giving her a strong foundation in delivering effective campaigns, managing multi-channel activity and supporting

BHETA urges suppliers to engage with product safety consultation

The government’s new consultation on the UK product safety framework entitled ‘Product regulation: the UK’s new product safety framework’ is open until 23 June and BHETA is urging all UK housewares and small domestic electricals suppliers to engage.

While it does contain some risks for UK companies in terms of increased administration, the main thrust of the proposed legislation is to require marketplaces to take due care to prevent, identify and remove dangerous products being sold online.

“This proposal is an opportunity for UK suppliers to restore fair competition and operate on a level playing field with distant sellers, offering product on marketplaces that would not be acceptable in high street retail on grounds of safety,” said Steve Richardson, general manager at BHETA.

“It would mean marketplaces having to take greater responsibility for products sold online, verifying seller details, acting against repeat offenders and ensuring safety information is visible before purchase. The message is simple: product safety law must catch up with how consumers now shop.”

While responsible UK suppliers invest in testing, traceability, labelling, standards and recall processes, too often they find themselves competing with overseas sellers which may not meet equivalent obligations, are hard to trace and can re-list quickly when challenged.

Steve continued: “If marketplaces become legally accountable via this legislation some non-compliant overseas sellers may leave the market, while others will have to meet UK requirements. That may reduce the volume of ultra-cheap, questionable listings and increase compliance costs for those remaining. It will not remove competition, but it should make competition more honest: price will be less able to depend on ignoring safety, documentation or accountability.

“There are of course some risks. UK suppliers selling through marketplaces could face more data requests, listing checks, slower onboarding or higher platform fees. Poorly designed rules could duplicate paperwork for businesses already doing the right thing. That is why BHETA members should get involved with the consultation and not sit back.

brand and communications strategies in fast-paced settings.

BHETA’s general manager, Steve Richardson said: “It’s brilliant to welcome Gifty to the team. She’s got a great energy about her, a strong creative side, as well as solid marketing experience. I am convinced she’ll bring real value to BHETA, especially in how we engage with and communicate to our members. We’re excited to have her involved and to see the fresh ideas she’ll bring to our work.”

Government decision on knives legislation likely delayed

The Home Office consultation on licensing for knife sales which closed in February, received over 3,000 responses meaning analysis and policy decisions are likely to take several more months.

Steve Richardson, general manager at BHETA, explained: “Even if government proceeds with legislation, the expectation is that implementation would not occur before mid-to-late 2027.”

The consultation followed proposals linked to Ronan’s Law and tougher controls around age verification, online sales and imports of bladed articles. Since it was first announced, BHETA has maintained an extensive lobbying programme on behalf of members, holding multiple meetings with the Home Office, Metropolitan Police and Border Force to ensure policymakers understand the practical and commercial realities facing legitimate UK businesses.

The proposed licensing regime would extend beyond traditional kitchen knives and could potentially affect suppliers and retailers of cutlery, garden tools, trade blades, scissors and other bladed products. BHETA’s core message has been that any future legislation must be proportionate, risk-based and commercially realistic.

“At BHETA, we believe the industry should support stronger marketplace legislation, but we need to ensure it is fit for purpose. Together we should press for proportionality, clear guidance, effective enforcement and no unnecessary burden on compliant suppliers. A safer, more transparent market is good for consumersand for reputable housewares businesses.”

Steve continued: “BHETA has consistently challenged the fairness of imposing additional costs and licensing burdens on compliant UK retailers and suppliers while vast volumes of small parcels continue entering the UK from overseas sellers with limited practical inspection at the border. If legitimate UK businesses become less competitive because of additional regulation, consumer purchasing may increasingly shift towards overseas online sellers and grey-market channelspotentially weakening both public safety outcomes and UK retail competitiveness.”

Any supplier or retailer wishing to become more involved in BHETA’s lobbying activity on knife licensing and bladed article legislation is encouraged to contact BHETA directly.

Why your membership matters

This month, Andrew talks about the power of collective action and what it delivers for independent retailers.

I'm often asked what the point of joining a trade association is. It's a fair question. Membership costs money and independent retailers are watching every penny. So what do you actually get for it? The answer starts with something simple: buying power.

When you're a single independent shop negotiating with suppliers, you're at a disadvantage. When you're part of a buying group representing thousands of retailers, you're negotiating with the leverage of a national chain. That's what Bira Direct delivers. Better terms, access to specialist suppliers and prices impossible to achieve alone. For many, the savings from Bira Direct alone cover the membership fee several times. Then there are the services that would cost a fortune if you bought them separately. Free legal advice. HR support. Health and safety guidance. Insurance deals negotiated at scale. Card processing at better rates. These aren't nice-to-haves when you're running a small business - they're essentials. Having access to them without needing to employ specialists or pay consultancy fees makes a real difference to your bottom line. But here's what individual buying power and services can't do: change the rules of the game. That requires a collective voice and for that voice to be heard in the right places. These past few weeks have shown what that looks like. I sat in a roundtable discussion with the chancellor, focused on revitalising British high streets. It was a productive meeting and Bira is now part of the government team reviewing high street developments. When policies are being shaped that will affect your business and your high street, we're in the room.

We're also making progress on retail crime. The statistics are still concerning, but crime levels appear to be levelling off and police forces have been more responsive to reports from retailers. This didn't happen by chance. It happened because we've been relentless in pushing this issue with the Home Office and police forces.

member who shares their experience or responds to our calls for evidence makes our case stronger.

Trade associations exist because industries recognised long ago that collective action achieves what individual action cannot. One retailer complaining about unfair competition gets ignored. Thousands of retailers, represented by a professional organisation with evidence and proposals, gets heard.

This isn't about blind loyalty. It's about recognising that some challenges can't be solved alone. You can't negotiate better supplier terms alone. You can't afford a full-time legal team alone. You can't get a meeting with the chancellor alone. But collectively, you can do all these things.

Independent retail faces pressure from every direction. Costs are rising, competition is fierce and the playing field often feels tilted against small businesses. Membership of a trade association won't solve everything, but it levels the playing

There's still much more to be done and we're continuing to work hard to bring more support. Then there's the duty-free loophole for imports valued at less than £135. This gives overseas sellers an enormous advantage over British businesses. Bira is leading the campaign to close this loophole, working with large retailers and online marketplaces to create a coalition that politicians can't ignore. None of this happens without membership. Every retailer who joins adds weight to our voice. Every membership fee funds the staff who research policy, write submissions and meet with MPs. Every

Membership starts at around £205 plus VAT per year. For most retailers, the savings on services and better supplier terms pay for that many times over. But the real value is in knowing you're not facing these challenges alone.

Together, we're stronger. Together, we're heard. Together, we can change things. That's what membership delivers. That's why it matters.

GUEST COLUMNIST Michael Scheepers

SUPPORTING BRITISH

BRANDS

The UK ceramics industry is at a critical juncture. A combination of sustained energy cost pressures, global competition and recent high-profile business struggles has brought the realities of our sector into sharper public focus. For many British manufacturers this is a structural challenge that requires both industry resilience and broader support from policymakers and consumers alike.

Being an established British brand is not simply a point of heritage, but a dedication to quality, accountability and long-term value. At the Portmeirion Group, our ‘made in Stokeon-Trent’ commitment remains central to our philosophy. We continue to invest in local manufacturing, safeguard highly skilled jobs and champion the expertise that has defined this industry for centuries.

Every piece of pottery we produce carries with it not only design integrity, but a deeper story. One defined by the knowledge and care of people who have spent decades refining their craft, centuries-old patterns revitalised and a central narrative of elevating the everyday.

However, the market also plays an important role. If British ceramics is to remain globally competitive, it requires conscious support from retailers and consumers. There is often a strong emotional affinity towards Britishmade products, but that sentiment must increasingly translate into purchasing decisions. It is more than our rich history, it is about backing an excellent standard of production.

Michael Scheepers, ceo at Portmeirion Group makes a call for considered choice, exploring why supporting British brands is a collective responsibility.

purchasing is gaining momentum. This plays directly to our strengths. Our products are designed to endure, not just physically, but stylistically, with patterns and forms that remain relevant across generations.

This evolution also reflects broader changes in how people live and dine. The traditional, formal British table has given way to something more fluid and intentional. Customers are placing greater value on the purpose of a product and its ability to elevate dining occasions, whether that is an ordinary weeknight dinner or an extraordinary weekend gathering.

Encouragingly, we are seeing a shift in consumer behaviour that supports this narrative. The move away from fast, trend-led consumption towards more considered

We are in an age where time has become a premium and the moments people spend together carry greater meaning. As a result, tableware is no longer reserved for display or key calendar dates, it is expected to create special moments in everyday life.

Here, the concept of everyday luxury becomes particularly relevant. Consumers are not buying more, but they are buying better. They want pieces that are purposeful, lasting and elevate daily rituals. British ceramics is uniquely positioned to meet these demands, crafting pieces that consumers can rely on for that desired sense of everyday indulgence. There is a clear opportunity with this evolving mindset, particularly for retailers. By championing British-made products, retailers are not only offering customers an excellent product, but also a compelling story rooted in heritage, craft and responsible production. In an increasingly crowded global market, that differentiation is powerful.

Ultimately, the future of British ceramics will be shaped by a combination of industry action, government support, but also market choice of the consumer. As manufacturers, we will continue to invest, innovate and protect our heritage, but sustained success will depend on a collective commitment to supporting British brands and recognising their true value.

Bottom: At the Portmeirion Group, the ‘made in Stoke-on-Trent’ commitment remains central to its philosophy.

JURY SERVICE

Housewares Awards 2026 (EIHA) are now open, PH catches up with some of the retail judges - Kristin Lohse, buyer, Souschef; Sophie McEwan, owner, Quince & Cook; Liz Lawson, managing director, Lawsons; David Crossley, co-owner, Salamander; Anita Gordon, owner, Old Bakery Cookshop; and Mandy Cohen, director, Etc... - to find out what their expectations are this year.

What new products are you hoping or expecting to see in the EIHA categories this year?

Kristin: “Overall I feel like Ninja has dominated the small appliance market in the past year and would expect to see them on the list of nominees.”

Sophie: “I’d love to see products that genuinely make everyday life easier or nicer, rather than products that just feel like a rework of something we’ve seen before. Customers are thinking harder before buying now, so products need to earn their place a bit more than they used to.

What innovation has there been in the sector over the last year that you would hope to be reflected in the entries?

“I think we’ll continue to see strong interest in products that combine practicality with personality, things that are useful, but still bring warmth, colour or a sense of joy into the home.”

Liz: “A good gadget would be good; something that helps people in the home and with their health is always popular –think spiraliser.”

David: “Products that respond to emerging trends in cooking, inspiring ideas and perhaps the next air fryer.”

Mandy: “I’m hoping to see products that don’t greenwash and products that actually work and that are genuinely new. I don’t want to see another water bottle in the Eco Award category, we’re done with that, that’s a part of daily life now. So I’d like to see products that are actually innovative.”

Anita: “I’m not at all sure what new products I would hope to see, although when I see it, I’ll know if it’s a good idea or not. I suspect that more enamelware will be coming along again.”

Kristin: “Hestan launched the tri-ply bakeware in the autumn. Where we've normally only seen tri-ply in pans and roasting dishes, Hestan has expanded into baking trays, loaf tins and cake tins. These products have quickly become very popular as they don't just perform incredibly well, they are very durable and visually beautiful as well. Truly the whole package.”

Sophie: “A lot of the innovation over the last year has been quieter and more thoughtful, rather than flashy. It’s less about gimmicks and more about products being better designed, longer lasting and easier to live with.

“There’s also been a noticeable move towards refill systems, multifunctional products and better use of materials. Customers are asking more questions about quality, longevity and whether something is actually useful, so I’d hope that’s reflected.”

Liz: “Home baking – we have sold a lot of stand mixers and baking tins this year. I think treating yourself at home is on the rise.”

David: “I’d hope to see the growth of alternatives to nonstick, PFASfree products and sustainability more generally reflected in the entries.”

Inset: Lawsons is seeing growth in bright colours in the kitchen, such as the Mikasa bowls.
Inset: Kristin Lohse, buyer, Souschef.
Inset: Mandy Cohen, director, etc...
Inset: Liz Lawson, md, Lawsons.

Mandy: “More people are using new sustainably sourced materials, so it would be good to see those reflected in the entries.”

What have the main consumer trends been over the last year which are likely to be reflected in the entries?

Anita: “I honestly think that innovation has been sadly lacking. People are just pushing the air fryer and accessories market.”

Are you expecting to see an increase in the sustainable credentials of products being entered?

Kristin: “Simple and high-quality chef's gadgets and innovative cookware that's made to last.”

Sophie: “People still want their homes to feel comforting and personal, but they’re shopping more carefully than they were a few years ago. There’s more of a ‘buy less, buy better’ mindset now.

brilliant peer, supplier and friend in the room without watching the clock!

“But failing that, just sharing the room with such immense talent is a win in itself.”

Kristin: “I would think so. I feel like we all get more and more conscious about sustainability every year, so I'd be surprised if it wasn't reflected in a larger number of the entries as well.”

Sophie: “Yes, definitely. Although customers are much savvier now and can spot greenwashing a mile off.

“The products that seem to connect best are the ones where sustainability feels like a natural part of the design, whether that’s through refillability, durability, recyclable packaging or responsible sourcing, rather than it just being a marketing message added afterwards.”

Liz: “Personally I think this is tough against the backdrop of cost of living. If there was an eco product that helped people save money and helped improve their footprint on the earth, I think it would be a winner.”

“We’ve seen lots of interest in colour, playful design and products with personality, but equally people still want things to be practical and long-lasting. In kitchenware especially, there’s continued interest in cooking from scratch, entertaining at home and products that make everyday routines feel a bit more enjoyable.”

Liz: “Colour – we have sold lots of colour this year, be it Mikasa bowls; Le Creuset mugs; or colourful electrical SDA.”

David: “Uncoated pans and eco alternatives, though there is a case to highlight top quality nonstick. People are also asking where products are made. Methods of cooking on the rise include one pot cooking - hob to oven to table - and outdoor cooking beyond the barbecue.”

Sophie: “I’d love to see genuinely original ideas recognised, including products from smaller brands and independents, not just the biggest launches with the biggest marketing budgets behind them.

“The best products are often the ones that quietly become part of people’s daily lives and are still being used years later. It would be lovely to see that kind of longevity and thoughtful design celebrated more.”

David: “It would be nice to win again - after being a finalist for the last few years!

“More seriously - perhaps being more specific, to ensure that products really do meet the criteria and offer things that capture the imagination of customers, rather than just a new colour or something very similar to what has gone before.

Mandy: “I think we could use more of this. The challenge around it is that with this cost of living situation, it’s hard enough to sell anything, so a product that has something special or smart about it is nice, but that increases the price, which makes it difficult to sell, so it’s a bit of a vicious circle.”

Anita: “I definitely feel that sustainable products will be high on the entriesthe world just cannot keep up with the consumption and consumers are asking for it.”

Mandy: “My customers come in because I have bright colours and well-made products. People want to buy from somebody they can trust, so I need to consistently offer products that work and don’t break, then they will come back. For me it’s about smart buying, really listening and anticipating that what the customer wants will do the job they need done and that you have one that’s going to work.”

Anita: “I have seen people spending more on products that are going to last a lifetime and which are economical to use. Multi-ply stainless steel is an absolute hit here.”

What is your biggest wish for the awards this year? This could be dreamland or reality.

Kristin: “In a dreamland, I’d love for the event to magic up an extra 48 hours in the week so we can actually catch up with every single

“That being said, highlighting products that have stood the test of time is a great thing to do too, perhaps one in each category beside the overall icon.

“There is also something about highlighting value for money and products at different price points.”

Mandy: “My biggest wish is to be surprised and say ‘ooh I’ve never seen that before’.”

Anita: “For my favourite products to be at the top.”

Inset: The Hestan Triply range has become popular quickly with Souschef’s customers.

OUT OF THIS WORLD

At the Inspired Home Show in Chicago, the International Housewares Association announced the winners of the gia Global Honorees for Retail Excellence. PH finds out more about the winning stores.

Established in 2009 in an old milk bar in regional Victoria, Kabinett began as a small vintage furniture store. During Covid lockdowns, the business transitioned into a two-storey heritage pub with a wide veranda, enabling its evolution into the hybrid, experiential department store it is today.

Kabinett has six rooms retained on the ground floor due to original bluestone construction, transforming structural constraints into distinct experiential retail zones. Each room functions as an independent design environment, refreshed regularly and informed by a single vintage hero piece, creating narrative-led merchandising rather than category-based layouts.

The former front bar has been reconfigured as the fragrance and accessories department, repurposing a high-traffic hospitality space into a sensory retail anchor.

Scent and sound are woven into the experience, creating a slow, immersive environment that invites customers to linger, explore and connect emotionally.

Visual merchandising follows instinct rather than rules, pairing objects unexpectedly and revealing stories through room-based displays.

l Innovation

The global gia jury, consisting of four retail/visual merchandising experts and seven editors and publishers of co-sponsoring housewares trade publications from around the world, selected the gia Global Honorees from a pool of 31 national winners that were announced earlier this year.

They also selected winners of two other special awards: The Martin M. Pegler Award for Excellence in Visual Merchandising was awarded to Kabinett of Australia and Casa Cuesta of Dominican Republic. The gia Digital Commerce Award for Excellence in Online Retailing was awarded to Home Centre of Saudi Arabia.

The gia program was created by IHA and The Inspired Home Show to foster innovation and excellence in home and housewares retailing throughout the world. Since the launch of gia in 2000, there have been over 600 gia retail award winners, from 60 countries on six continents.

HALF TIME REACTION

How has 2026 been so far for your company and the industry as a whole?

Mohamed: “We are pleased with how 2026 has started and feel encouraged by our current trading position. We closed Q1 in line with 2025 while continuing to work towards ambitious growth targets built on the strong momentum of previous years.

“Market feedback remains positive, retail partners are reporting resilient consumer demand with clear growth across key product categories. While purchasing behaviour is becoming more considered and value-focused, this is playing to our strengths, reinforcing the appeal of our branded offering and

driving confident, high-quality sales rather than short-term impulsive purchases.”

Duncan: “2026 has continued to be a period of uncertainty for both Ultimate Products and the housewares industry. Trading conditions remain challenging, with consumers still highly value focused and cautious in their spending. While conditions are not worsening, the environment continues to demand careful management and disciplined decision making from suppliers and retailers alike.

communicate these benefits are well positioned.”

Carl: “2026 has been a year of focus and discipline so far. Across the industry, there’s been a clear move away from over complex ranges and towards propositions that earn their place through performance, design and commercial relevance.

“For our business, the focus has been on managing costs carefully, supporting our retail partners and ensuring we are well positioned for sustainable growth as conditions improve. We’ve seen encouraging signs across our core categories, particularly where strong brands and clear value propositions are resonating with consumers.”

“For us, the first half has been about backing innovation that delivers added value. Circulon ScratchDefense continues to perform strongly because it solves a real consumer frustration. At the premium end, Hestan has been an important growth driver. In a more cautious market, innovation must be both tangible and defensible and that’s where we’ve focused investment.”

“For us, 2026 has been a pivotal year of progress and transformation. As a brand,

Rachel: “2026 has begun on a positive note with strong customer engagement and encouraging momentum across our core categories. It’s been particularly pleasing to see continued interest in products that deliver on both functionality and design, reinforcing the strength of our proposition.

“Across the wider industry, there’s a sense of cautious confidence. While consumers are undoubtedly more considered in their spending, demand remains for quality, innovation and products that offer genuine value.

Brands that can clearly

Inset: OXO’s new Brew range sold out immediately on release earlier this year.

“Across the housewares sector, conditions remain challenging, but there is a growing sense of realism and reset. Retailers are making tougher, smarter choices and that plays to the strength of brands that lead with innovation, strong design and clear consumer relevance, rather than simply competing on price.”

What do you expect to be the biggest challenges and opportunities for the rest of the year?

Mohamed: “The primary challenge we anticipate is the potential impact on consumer confidence and spending driven by global events. In response, our focus will be on maintaining a positive outlook, continuing to deliver what we do best and communicating the strengths of our products and brands.

its perceived non-toxic benefits, alongside growing interest in ceramic non-stick.”

Duncan: “Looking ahead, the key challenge will be managing ongoing uncertainty while maintaining momentum in what remains a competitive market. Flexibility and discipline will continue to be important.

“We see a clear opportunity to stimulate demand through well-timed, meaningful promotional activity. We are also observing a shift in consumer preferences, with increasing demand for stainless steel cookware due to

“The opportunity lies in being ready as confidence returns. Retailers are increasingly looking for dependable partners who execute well, support categories with insight and bring clarity to ranges.”

What have been the biggest challenges and opportunities so far this year?

Mohamed: “Global uncertainty has remained a key challenge for us, which I assume is also the case for many. Ongoing shifts in the international political landscape have contributed to a sense of caution, particularly in relation to costs and long-term planning. While these factors are largely beyond our control, we have remained focused on what we can influence, taking a pragmatic and disciplined approach.

“Global uncertainty and ongoing cost pressures are likely to remain key challenges. They’re not issues that will disappear, so maintaining consistency across service, quality and innovation will be essential.

“There is reason for optimism. Consumers still want well-designed, high-performing products, but they are making more considered purchasing decisions. This creates a clear opportunity for brands that are confident in positioning, transparent in approach and focused on delivering value.”

“Periods like these tend to underscore the value of well-established, high-quality brands. In this context, we are well positioned to capitalise and maximise the opportunity to continue delivering reliability, innovation and strong value.”

Duncan: “Cost pressures have continued to be one of the biggest challenges, alongside a cautious retail environment and ongoing pressure on consumer spend. This has meant ranges need to work harder and deliver a clear value proposition, with greater focus on relevance and quality, rather than breadth alone. With that said, it has created opportunities as it has allowed us to sharpen our focus on our strongest platforms, simplify where needed and ensure we are bringing relevant, differentiated products to market.”

Rachel: “Ongoing cost pressures and evolving consumer behaviour have been key challenges. The landscape remains dynamic and it’s important that we stay agile and responsive.

“At the same time, these challenges are creating opportunities. They’ve sharpened our focus, ensuring we remain customer-led. We’re continuing to see potential in innovation and collaboration, as well as in developing products that earn their place.”

Paul: “From a challenge perspective, UK consumers remain highly value conscious, which puts pressure on pricing and margin. Retailers are rationalising ranges, meaning competition is intense. Transformational change requires pace, focus and clear prioritisation. However, those challenges also create opportunities; there is clear white space for innovative, problem solving products. Consumers are willing to invest in better solutions if the value is clear. Retailers increasingly want brands that bring newness, insight and inspiration.”

Carl: “The challenge will be sustaining differentiation through peak trading when competition intensifies and space becomes more contested. The opportunity lies in staying disciplined and backing winners.

“Continuing to build momentum behind established platforms, while selectively growing a premium trade up proposition, allows us to drive both value and margin. Consumers are more selective, but they’re still willing to invest when the performance, quality and brand story are compelling.”

Paul: “The key challenge will be maintaining momentum while navigating ongoing economic and geopolitical uncertainty. The opportunity is significant. Housewares remains a category where innovation matters, products can transform everyday tasks and there’s strong consumer appetite for smarter, more sustainable and better designed solutions.”

How is the conflict in the Middle East affecting trading?

Mohamed: “To date, we have not experienced any significant impact on our trading because of the conflict. Stock availability has remained stable, largely due to our reliance on European stockholding. However, it would be unwise to assume conditions will continue unchanged. We are beginning to see early indications of price increases filtering through and will therefore be planning for some level of impact on trade soon.”

Duncan: “It is still relatively early to fully understand how the situation will affect consumer demand, but ongoing geopolitical uncertainty does have a wider impact on confidence. If the conflict continues, increases in energy costs are likely to put further pressure on budgets. This inevitably leaves less available for spend on categories like housewares.”

opportunity to reconnect with customers. I’m excited to showcase our latest ranges, including some key new launches and to have those in-depth conversations that you just can’t replicate elsewhere.

Rachel: “The conflict continues to add a layer of uncertainty across global markets, particularly in relation to logistics, supply chains and energy costs. While the direct impact can vary by region, it underlines the importance of careful planning and resilience.

“For us, the focus is on maintaining close relationships with partners, communicating transparently and remaining agile.”

NEW AND EXCLUSIVE

A wide variety of exhibitors at this year’s Exclusively are new to the show for 2026, including established industry names and newcomers alike. PH finds out what their hopes and expectations are for the show and what visitors can expect to see on the stands.

“Exclusively is the show to be at”

“An excellent opportunity”

“A key moment in the calendar”

Smeg (EH454) is making its debut at Exclusively as an opportunity to showcase the continued evolution of its SDA range, particularly within the cooking and coffee categories, where the company is seeing strong innovation and momentum.

Niamh Griffiths, senior marketing executive, comments: “It also allows us to strengthen existing retail partnerships, while opening conversations with new stockists in a highly engaged, design-led environment.”

Smeg is hoping to generate conversations with retail partners around how it can support sell-through via strong in-store storytelling and aligned campaign moments. Niamh outlines: “We want to build confidence in our upcoming launches, demonstrate the strength of our roadmap and ultimately secure new listings and incremental opportunities across key categories.”

2026 marks Arovo’s (EH120) first time exhibiting at Exclusively. Hannah Smyth, account manager tells PH: “The show brings together the most relevant retailers, buyers and partners in one focused environment, making it the ideal platform for Arovo to showcase our latest home collections and strengthen relationships within the industry.”

Arovo is looking to gather insight, test new concepts and demonstrate how its brands can drive real value, differentiation and sales at the show.

Visitors can expect to see a curated showcase of Arovo’s latest and upcoming collections across Elle Home, MasterChef, Code Maison and The Great British Bake Off Hannah concludes: “Our stand will highlight trend-led design, strong brand storytelling and commercially focused product ranges across home and kitchen, with plenty of newness and inspiration for the season ahead.”

ESA Sales (EH443 and EH426) views Exclusively as a key exhibition that allows it to showcase and demonstrate its best sellers and introduce new innovations.

Chris Hoyle, managing director, furthers: “We cover a multitude of product categories and the show provides an excellent opportunity to remind our customers of the extent of our portfolio.”

The supplier is looking to expand its UK brand distribution and introduce new partner brands such as Qwetch and Vin Bouquet

ESA Sales is also keen to highlight the range of services it provides for clients, brands and customers. Chris says: “It is our belief that by reinstating old fashioned, often long-lost practices such as in-store demonstrations and staff training, we can create proactive collaborations which create theatre, helping to generate consumer interest and ultimately more sales.”

Visitors can expect a curated showcase of Smeg’s SDA portfolio, with a particular spotlight on its latest cooking innovations as part of its (R)evolutionary Cooking direction. Niamh furthers: “Alongside this, we’ll be presenting newness across coffee, food preparation and our iconic breakfast category, all brought together through Smeg’s signature blend of performance and design.

“The stand will focus on clear product storytelling, highlighting key benefits and creating a cohesive brand experience that translates seamlessly to the retail environment.”

Chris adds: “We wish to sign up new customers but its more than that. Our blend of local and FOB logistics offers a significant advantage, especially during the current geopolitical climate.”

“The perfect platform”

Following the merger of Blue Canyon and Casa and Casa into Blue Casa (EH406), this year marks an important new chapter for the company as it heads to Exclusively for the first time.

Waheed Qadir, director and founder, explains: “The merger represents a significant amount of work behind the scenes, bringing together our bathroom and kitchen collections under one unified brand. This has created a more streamlined offering. With hundreds of new product launches over the past few years, we are eager to showcase our expanded portfolio, grow our customer network and gain valuable feedback.”

As many of its customers are located across the UK and Europe, exhibiting at Exclusively provides a valuable opportunity for face-to-face meetings, particularly as the firm is based in Scotland. Visitors can expect to see the launch of Blue Casa’s new 2026 collections, featuring more than 200 products across both bathroom accessories and a new kitchen accessories range

Waheed concludes: “We are especially enthusiastic about the continued growth of the Casa and Casa kitchen category. One standout addition is our new Highland Cow collection, which celebrates our Scottish roots and reflects the heritage of our company.”

Now under new ownership, Nimbus (EH418) is taking the opportunity of exhibiting at Exclusively to reintroduce the Falcon Housewares enamelware Laura Squire, director, explains: “It provides the perfect platform to showcase our refreshed vision and highlight the benefits of enamelware and our focus on quality, innovation and strong customer relationships.”

Enamelware is all purpose and can be found from retail to catering environments and Nimbus is looking to reach Exclusively’s broad base of visitors with the range. Laura adds: “It’s also a chance for us to talk about the direction of Nimbus, get honest feedback and give people a first look at our new products, new packaging and future developments.”

The stand will show how Falcon Housewares and Nimbus are evolving. Laura says: “We’ll have a mix of new packaging, new products, designs, fresh ideas and recent product developments on display - giving a clear sense of where the business is going next.”

“A natural place for us”

Frank green (EH409) is heading to Exclusively to connect with retailers, buyers and partners who care about beautifully designed products that help people move away from single-use plastic.

Dan Roberts, UK md, says: “For us, it is also a chance to show how far frank green has come. We were founded with a simple mission to reimagine reusable products and make sustainable choices feel effortless, desirable and part of everyday life. Exclusively gives us the right platform to share that story with the trade and introduce more people to the products, campaigns and partnerships that sit behind it.”

The frank green brand already has a strong following among consumers, but Exclusively gives the company the chance to translate that energy into new retail opportunities.

Dan continues: “More broadly, we want people to leave the stand understanding that frank green is not just another reusable bottle or cup brand. It is a design-led business with a clear environmental purpose, a strong community and products people genuinely want to use every day.”

Visitors can expect to see the latest from frank green’s award-winning range of reusable bottles, cups and accessories, including bestsellers and some surprising newer product lines.

At Exclusively, Swan will highlight its kitchen collections spanning SDA and housewares. Established ranges such as Windsor, Retro and Solace will see continued expansion through new colourways and extended housewares lines.

Each piece features a unique tonal finish, creating a handcrafted aesthetic while maintaining durability. The Nattura range also returns, extending across tableware, serveware and cast iron.

Swan introduces a more expressive, trendled direction, with stoneware dinnerware featuring scalloped edges and soft pastel tones. These collections combine decorative appeal with everyday usability.

Tower completes the offering with accessible stoneware, featuring clean matte finishes and versatile colourways such as blue, taupe and sage, designed for modern kitchens.

Across the portfolio, the emphasis is on helping retailers create cohesive displays that support both footfall and basket spend.

New for 2026, Azure and Linea introduce fresh design direction to the SDA category.

These developments position Swan as a comprehensive kitchen brand, supporting retailers in driving linked sales through coordinated merchandising.

Coordinated design with Tower Velora

Tower will also expand its coordinated offer with the introduction of the Velora collection, spanning both SDA and housewares.

Defined by a textured stripe finish, Velora is available in black and stone, both with gold accents to create a cohesive, premium look. The range includes a bread bin, canisters and a knife block, alongside matching kettle and toaster.

The result is a coordinated kitchen solution that combines visual appeal with everyday functionality.

OBeach’s confidence in the air fryer from its professional range.

riginally established in the United States in 1910, Hamilton Beach built its reputation engineering high-performance equipment for demanding commercial kitchens, before evolving its expertise for home cooks seeking professional results without professional-level prices.

Now entering the UK market, Hamilton Beach is introducing a comprehensive range of kitchen appliances designed to bridge the gap between mass-premium convenience

brands and ultra-premium luxury appliance manufacturers.

The professional portfolio includes blender, mixer, bread maker, coffee machine, air fryer and deep fat fryer. The core range includes slow cookers, waffle makers and other premium countertop appliances.

Introducing two new products being launched at Exclusively Show 2026:

DualStackPro 14.5L Air Fryer – Professional range

new for 2026

The air fryer category has matured rapidly and consumer expectations have changed. Consumers are no longer asking if an air fryer works, they are asking whether it can handle a full family meal, across multiple food types.

In answer to this, Hamilton Beach has developed its largest air fryer in the range, the DualStackPro with 14.5L capacity.

At 14.5L, it has two fully independent cooking zones with vision window so users can see while it cooks. Two independent zones with sync finish coordination, match cook automatically or use 12 expert presets.

The professional range is backed by a threeyear warranty which stands by Hamilton

“As the air fryer household penetration reaches saturation point, consumers are starting to upgrade their products. The DualStackPro is the perfect product to cater for any household, no matter the size due to its two-level stacked space saving design. The capacity and specs create a natural trade up story from the rest of the range” says Noel Pamment, ceo of EPE International.

BaristaPro+ Touch

Rated ‘The Best Coffee Machine for Versatility’ by IndyBest 2026, the Hamilton Beach BaristaPro+ Touch delivers hot espresso in only 45 seconds, or in 40 seconds switch to cold brew for your iced coffee. It has an LED screen with seven touchscreen-controlled drinks in a single machine. It has a distinct integrated milk system, a self-clean function and is backed by a two-year warranty.

“The Indy Best Buy recognition matters to us because it’s the credible, editorial endorsement that helps retailers confidently position this machine against the premium names and win,” says Harry Singh, md, Hamilton Beach UK & EMEA.

“The BaristaPro+ sits at a price point that makes it genuinely accessible, backed by premium specs that stand the comparison.”

WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY

“We're showcasing a bold creative for SS26”

In a world where ecommerce is available in all homes and lives inside our phones, window displays and visual merchandising have a tough job to pull in footfall from the high streets. Gia juror and retail expert, Denise Foley outlines some of the latest trends helping windows to create that much sought after wow effect.

Window displays are evolving into immersive, narrative driven and emotionally engaging experiences. When retailers are able to create windows which tell a story and engage customers, they immediately draw in foot traffic, increase dwell time and enhance the shareability of their stores.

Gia Top Window juror and visual merchandising expert, Denise Foley, outlines the main areas she believes retailers should be paying attention to. First of all, colour. Denise comments: “After years of minimalist trends, there’s a resurgence of strong colour, bold contrast, layered textures and oversized props. This deepens visual interest and also helps brands break through visual clutter in busy retail streets and shopping areas.”

Another area receiving attention is the customers’ senses. Denise outlines: “Retailers are employing sound, scent and tactile textures. Immersive environments create a stronger emotional imprint with clients.

“In-store touch points that tie to the digital experience make shopping richer and more memorable. Designing with social media in mind is important: backdrops, photo walls, striking visual moments – displays that are meant to be photographed and shared.” Finally, lighting and motion are key in catching attention. “Kinetic elements – moving parts, fabrics, light effects –capture the consumer’s attention, providing a

The John Lewis team works hard to bring innovative, arresting and captivating window designs to the UK high street that are a step ahead, respected and award-winning.

Sian Roberts, visual merchandising lead, John Lewis, comments: “Every retailer wants to drive commercial benefit, however the fundamental purpose of visual merchandising is to engage and convey your brand message in a way that makes someone stop and take note in a snapshot.”

For 2026, the retailer is showcasing a bold creative. Sian explains: “Our home category is showcasing a ‘modern luxe’ style, which features contemporary, curvaceous shapes, luxurious finishes and a sophisticated take on new luxury, including a gentle nod to Art Deco design.

“A key consideration in design is longevity and flexibility, which allows us to work with sustainable materials and be more commercially successful. This includes actively reusing kit from previous years to align with our efforts to be a more sustainable business. For instance, a Peter Jones floral display used wool from our Leckford Farm sheep instead of traditional materials, and leftover flowers were donated for repurposing.”

John Lewis believes that window displays are where the customer journey begins. Sian comments: “They're the most visible tool we have to entice a customer into our storethey're our moment to shine. Each window allows us to tell a story in an engaging and inspiring way that leaves a lasting impression.”

Inspiration is gathered from a mix of sources of art, fashion, travel, retail and architecture.

Sian concludes: “We regularly organise creative brainstorm sessions with key teams across the business to help us pull together our most visually exciting concepts which then translate across the business and the customer journey. Knowledge is key, we work with a mixture of suppliers across the globe to make sure we're working with the newest materials and practices to bring the best options available to our teams.”

surprise or dynamic factor, blurring the lines between physical and digital retail,” Denise enthuses. Within these three key areas, there are some clear trends emerging. The use of upcycling and craft is becoming more prevalent and can create real interest in a

noticed these trends showing up everywhere from luxury brands to the art and advertising worlds as well.

“Gia contestant, Homestead, utilises this theme well. The hand painted leaves and delicately crafted pottery butterflies add a seasonal touch to its window.”

Scale, rhythm and flow are helping to move windows away from the norm and create visually striking displays. Denise says: “We talk about this in a number of ways – small scale, large scaleproportion play rules here. Proportion matters: contrasting size and weight draws attention from afar. These are important elements of good

composition and a strong way to attract the viewer’s eye.

“Using symmetry and balance really forces your eye, not only onto that large or small element, but it moves your eye directly into the window.”

As mentioned earlier, storytelling and immersive elements are a strong method of seeking customer attention, which is often seen most prolifically in pop-up campaigns where brands are focussing not just on products, but about creating an experience for their customers.

“It

needs to feel fun and inviting”

Harts of Stur refreshes its windows around every four weeks, allowing the retailer to keep up with the seasons, any offers that are running and new stock that arrives. But what makes those windows work for the business?

Gayle Allard, shop floor manager, outlines:

“For me, a great window display is something that grabs you straight away and still makes sense in a couple of seconds.

“It needs to feel fun and inviting, with one clear ‘hero’ area that catches your eye and makes you slow down as you pass. If it also creates a bit of curiosity - so you want to take a closer look - then it’s doing its job. Ultimately, the window should give people a quick feel for what we sell and what we’re like as a store and make it easy to think, ‘right, I’ll pop in’.”

Windows are the ideal way to bring in new customers who don’t know what Harts of Stur offers. Gayle continues: “Window displays matter because, for a lot of people, the window is the first ‘hello’ they get from us. It’s a quick way to show what we sell, what’s new in and the kind of feel we’re going for, before anyone even opens the door. When the window’s strong, it turns people passing by into people coming in.”

Inspiration for the windows comes from what time of year it is as well as what products are coming into the shop. Gayle comments: “We’ll lean into seasonal moments - spring refresh, outdoor living, Christmasand use new ranges as a good excuse to tell a fresh little story in the window.

Denise concludes: “The boundaries between disciplines have dissolved. Visual merchandising, art, architecture, store design and performance now converge, working in unison to create immersive, surprising and collaborative customer experiences.”

“We also like pulling older lines back out and giving them a new look by styling them differently, mixing them with complementary bits, or building a simple theme around them. That way, even products people have seen before can feel new again.”

How long have you been at Captivate Brands?

It’s 14 years – it definitely doesn’t feel that long. A lot has happened.

What was your career history prior to Captivate Brands?

I have always been in the housewares industry and worked on both sides of the fence as it were. I started out as a retail buyer in the department store sector in the London area – for Morley’s Group and Bentalls. Then in 2006, I moved over to the distributor side, joining KitchenCraft to head up its product development team. Six years later I moved to my current role as managing director at Captivate Brands, spending a lot more time in the factories in China.

What is your greatest achievement in your career so far?

Without a doubt it is my current role as md. I started the business in the UK from scratch 14 years ago and the company now turns over £14million and employs 55 staff. When I left KitchenCraft in Feb 2012, I had a lot of industry people telling me that I must be mad to leave what was deemed the best housewares supplier in the industry. People were very vocal about how I had made the wrong decision. I have always followed my gut instinct and I grabbed this new opportunity to build a business and further my career.

Favourite part of your job?

Working with such a talented team. They all have individual talents which collectively make them an awesome team. They share the same company values as me: they are dedicated, have a great work ethic and are a real pleasure to work with.

Least

favourite part of your job?

Last minute manufacturing surprises. When you’re dealing with China or India it can have its challenges. Fortunately it’s not that often. When things do go wrong though it can be a major issue, but I find there is always a solution and often it’s a quick fix. The downside is that it generally costs you, either by letting a customer down (which I hate) or adding extra cost to fly the product in. I take it in my stride as it’s part of the job.

EXECUTIVE PROFILE Kevin

example Lead by

Kevin Mckay, managing director, Captivate Brands, talks about working collectively, manufacturing surprises and following your gut.

Who is the unsung hero of the company?

There are so many in the team that go under the radar. But if I had to choose it would be assistant buyer, Lottie Wood. Nothing is too much trouble for her. She works hard, she’s brilliant in front of customers and has great attention to detail. A strong team player.

What is the biggest change within the housewares industry that you have seen since you have worked in it?

The marked shift towards sustainable living, with consumers increasingly favouring products that are eco-friendly and made from recycled materials, or products designed to reduce energy.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Lead by example. I would never expect any of my team to do anything that I would not do myself.

Biggest lesson you’ve taken away from the last year?

To expect the unexpected and take nothing for granted. Keeping a positive can-do attitude helps me power through the challenges that seem to be increasingly coming my way.

If you could change one thing about the housewares industry, what would it be and why?

Without a doubt I would love to see the industry thrive and

brought more into the 21st century. There is so much that we can do as an industry collectively to support each other, but many companies prefer to work in isolation. I am not talking about anyone giving away trade secrets or sharing sensitive information, but there are some challenges that we all face from time to time. There’s no doubt we could be more effective tackling them together.

If you didn’t work in the housewares industry, what industry would you work in and why?

Having spent over 45 years in the industry, this is such a difficult question for me. I still have so much passion for housewares and I feel there is a lot more that I have to offer. If I had to choose another industry it would still have to be in a creative role, so I love the idea of being an architect.
